Natural Antibiotics That Can Help You Fight Infections

natural antibioticsAntibiotics are the medicines prescribed to treat bacterial infections. Invention of antibiotics has been a boon to medical science with which we can treat a number of bacterial infections that can be fatal. But the fact that overusing antibiotics can lead to ill-effects and lower natural immunity cannot be denied. There are certain infections which can be easily taken care of by the “Natural Antibiotics” commonly found in our kitchen cabinets. In this article, I am going to share a few most important natural antibiotics. These “Natural Antibiotics” boost your immune system and we all know, only good nutrition and a well-balanced diet can help our body fight against infective agents.

Natural Antibiotics That Fight Infections

1. Onion, Garlic and Ginger
Let’s begin with the frequently used food items used in preparation of gravy i.e. Onions, Garlic and Ginger. Onions and garlic do more than just add flavor to food. They are packed with immune-boosting nutrients which inhibit the growth of potentially harmful bacteria. Ginger extract reduces inflammation in those with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory gut disease, gastric ulcers, asthma, and certain cancers. One point to be remembered here is, we can get most of the benefits of garlic only when it is crushed or chewed. Very few of us know when sulphur compounds (from onion and garlic) are combined with Zinc, the outcome is strong immunity. Sulphur compounds help to boost absorption of the zinc that’s found in whole-grain foods. Good Sources of Zinc include: All whole grains, including brown rice and whole-grain breads; legumes. An excellent combo idea you can use: Brown (or wild) rice with caramelized onions.

2. Add Some Spice
Now, coming to the spices which we add to get flavour. But honestly, more than flavor, they all serve a very useful purpose. First, comes Turmeric! Many of us are already drinking turmeric milk daily knowing its magical powers. Turmeric contains curcumin which is highly anti-inflammatory in nature. It not only boosts immunity but is an effective pain-killer too. Another useful medicine in our kitchen pharmacy is Cinnamon, which is loaded with powerful antioxidants! In addition to improving immunity, it also helps in improving heart health, blood sugar levels and brain health. Only a pinch of cinnamon should be used at a time and not more than half a teaspoon a day. You can add cinnamon to your milk, tea or sprinkle over the salad. Next, comes Black pepper, which may help increase the good bacteria in your gut – which eventually helps improve your immunity.  Try this combo for a sore throat: Mash 1 inch piece of ginger, 2 peppercorns, cinnamon and 1 star anise. Boil and sip hot with 1/4 tsp organic honey. Works like magic!

3. The Kitchen Garden
Now let’s move to our kitchen garden’s grace, Tulsi/Holy Basil. It protects against nearly all infections from viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Another way to help a sore throat heal: boil tulsi seeds and ginger in water and drink this after straining.

4. Don’t Forget Vitamin C
Believe me, if you include vitamin rich foods daily in your diet, you will not require Vitamin C in the concentrated form. Sources include amla, green, yellow and red peppers (red bell peppers contain twice as much vitamin C as citrus. They’re also a rich source of beta carotene which helps keep your eyes and skin healthy), sweet potatoes, mangoes, melons, oranges, strawberries, tomatoes, papaya, broccoli and citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit. Vitamin C helps combat anemia too. Combining vegetarian sources of iron like chickpeas, sprouts, etc. with vitamin C–rich foods like lemon helps to enhance the uptake of iron. So, next time, you have chickpeas/sprouts, don’t forget to squeeze some lemon juice on them.

5. Fermented Foods
Foods like Yogurt, Curd, Buttermilk (plain kind), Fermented rice, Apple cider vinegar, Miso, Sauerkraut (chopped pickled cabbage), Kimchi (spicy pickled cabbage), Kefir and Kombucha tea have live microorganisms and when taken in sufficient amounts, they can help restore the natural balance of gut bacteria by improving gut flora and prevent, as well as treat multiple gastrointestinal infections.

Other antibacterial foods we can store in our kitchen are green tea, whole oats (rolled or steel cut), cold pressed coconut oil, cardamom, cloves, honey, thyme (ajwain) and rye. Honestly, the list is very long. Just remember, “Let food be your medicine and the kitchen, your pharmacy!” They are not the substitutes of any medicine but deserve a fair trial and if taken when the very first sign of an inflammation appears or along with prescribed medicines, all these could be really effective in either stopping the progress of a disease or cutting short the duration of illness. Moreover, if you are consuming them on a regular basis, your immunity is good enough to fight any infection.

NOTE: People on blood-thinning drugs should seek advice from their physician before having garlic and cucurmin because they have some blood thinning properties.

We hope this article on Natural Antibiotics helps you include them in your daily routine. Do let us know your thoughts in the comments below! For more on nutrition and immunity, check out Healthy Reads.

5 Ways to Improve Immunity Naturally

improve immunity naturallyWith the Omicron variant looming over our heads, there’s one very important thing to realize – the virus attacks people with a compromised or low immune system. A strong and properly functioning immune system helps by protecting you in your daily life as you come into contact with germs and bugs from other people, pets and the environment around you. Without a healthy immune system, you could pick up infections and infectious diseases more easily, and the effects could be serious – even fatal. So let’s look at ways in which we can improve immunity naturally!

Tips to Improve Immunity Naturally

1. Healthy Diet
Following a HEALTHY DIET rich in ANTIOXIDANTS is essential to supporting your immune system. Include more fruits and vegetables, as they are rich in antioxidants. They help combat free radicals—chemicals by products known to damage DNA and suppress the immune system. A few examples of immunity building food items includes – Citrus fruits, Lemon, Amla, Kiwi, Papaya, Bell peppers, Broccoli, Mushrooms, Spinach, Garlic, Ginger, Turmeric, Yogurt, Nuts and Seeds, Seafood and Green Tea.

Choose healthy fats (such as the omega-3 fatty acids available in oily fish, flaxseed, and canola/soya bean oil) over saturated fats (found in meat and dairy products). Also, healthy fats may help increase your body’s production of compounds involved in regulating immunity. Drinking plenty of water helps our cells operate efficiently and allows the body to process food and eliminate waste. Reduce your intake of Alcohol and avoid smoking as well.

2. Regular Exercise
Incorporating a regular workout regime, in your daily routine, has been scientifically proven to boost our immune system. Research continues to support a link between moderate, regular exercise and a healthy immune system. Regular exercise mobilises the T cells, a type of white blood cell which guards the body against infection. However, Intense exercise seems to cause a temporary decrease in immune system function. Research has found that during intense physical exertion, the body produces certain hormones (Stress hormones) that temporarily lower immunity. If you are training for ultra-endurance events, a key component of your training should be including enough rest and recovery days to allow your body (immune system) to recover.

3. Reduce Stress
Chronic stress can leave you with a low immunity by suppressing the immune response of your body as it releases the hormone cortisol, when in a stressful situation. Cortisol interferes with the T-cells to reproduce and receive signals from the body. Cortisol also reduces the antibody secretory IgA, which lines the gut and respiratory tract, which are our first line of defense against various pathogens. To keep your stress levels in check, you should follow the practice of Yoga, meditation or deep breathing in your regular routine. Take up a hobby or involve yourself in some recreational activity.  Talk to friends/ family about your concerns and seek professional help, if required.

4. Sleep Well
Another healthy habit vital to preventing sickness is getting a full eight hours of sleep each night. Sound and sufficient sleep help regulate the immune function. Several studies have shown that those who sleep less than six hours per night or who have a sleep disorder were more likely to have colds and other respiratory infections. Try to sleep for 7–8 hours and avoid having a late-night too often.

5. Good Hygiene
The first line of defence against germs is following good personal hygiene! It lowers your risk for diseases and illnesses commonly spread through viruses and bacteria. Your hands come into contact with bacteria/virus every time you cough, use the restroom, touch your pet, or touch surfaces such as stair railings used frequently by others. Failing to wash your hands and body regularly can cause the bacteria/virus to multiply, increasing the risk for infection and other health problems. Here’s the right way to use a hand sanitizer: https://goqii.com/blog/the-correct-way-to-use-hand-sanitizer-to-kill-99-9-germs/

You can stop an infection before it begins and avoids spreading it to others with these easy measures:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before preparing food and after using the restroom, after coming back home from or whenever you feel they are dirty.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze or cough, or cough into your elbow rather than your hand.

With little change in your diet and routine, you can ensure that your immune system is strong enough to protect you against the virus infection. Eat as little or no junk food at all! Hope these tips help you witness the change in your body’s strength to fight illness.

6 Magical Foods That Could Help Boost Your Immunity

boost your immunity

The winter flu coupled with the ongoing pandemic isn’t a very desirable combination. If you’re too worried about that cough or cold being a symptom of COVID-19, you need to boost your immunity this season! Being we get to the foods which can boost your immunity, let’s understand what immunity is all about!

What Is Immunity?

It is a condition of being able to resist a particular disease, especially by preventing the development of pathogenic microorganisms or by counteracting the effects of its products. The Immune system consists of organs, cells, tissues and proteins – together they carry out bodily processes that fight off pathogens (viruses, bacteria and foreign bodies that cause infection or disease). When our immune system comes into contact with a pathogen, it triggers an immune response. The immune system releases antibodies which attach to the antigen or pathogen and kill them.

In simple terms, immunity is the strength to fight and ward off viruses and bacteria which make us weak and ill. It’s the 1st line of defence. To build immunity, we have to choose a healthy lifestyle with:

  • Regular exercise
  • Healthy and nutritious food
  • Staying well hydrated
  • Good quality sleep
  • Stress management
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol
  • Avoid processed, canned, preserved and refined food

Magical Foods That Can Help Boost Your Immunity

While the above certainly help you boost your immunity, here are a few magical foods that can help you as well.

  1. Fruits: are packed with vitamins and minerals. They are a rich source of Vitamin C and Vitamin A which play a very important role in building immunity. They are packed with antioxidants. Citrus fruits like Orange, grapefruit, Sweet Lime, lemon as well as kiwi, papaya and all types of berries are the best. To get the best of fruits, we should always consume seasonal and locally grown fruits. 2-3 serving of fruits are recommended per day if there is no restriction.
  2. Vegetables: like green leafy veg, broccoli, red bell pepper are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Green leafy vegetables are packed with fiber and water. They are loaded with Vitamin A, C and K. Calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium are the minerals which we can get from them. They are also good sources of phytochemicals like litein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene which revitalize our health. In fact, Broccoli is supercharged with vitamins A, C and E. It has sulforaphane which is an antioxidant. It has good amounts of fiber which supports the immune system. Red bell pepper has good amounts of Vitamin C which can be compared to Citrus fruits. If anyone wants a good amount of Vitamin C with fruit sugar (Fructose), bell peppers are the best option. It is also a good source of Beta carotene (which gets converted into Vitamin A). Along with helping boost your immunity, it also improves your skin and eye health.
  3. Nuts and Seeds: are good sources of good fat/omega 3 fatty acids and have protein and antioxidants in it along with Vitamin E minerals. In nuts and seeds, almonds and sunflower seeds help you boost your immunity. Vitamin E is fat soluble and almonds have plenty of it! Sunflower seeds are great sources of phosphorus, magnesium, selenium, Vitamin B-6 and E. Vitamin E is very important in regulating and maintaining the immune system.
  4. Roots like Ginger and Garlic: Ginger is anti-inflammatory and antioxidative in nature, hence it helps in preventing illnesses. Certain chemical compounds in ginger helps our body ward off germs. Both fresh and dried ginger are good to build immunity. Garlic is used in home remedies for common cough and cold and other illnesses. It has allicin in it which helps to lower down the blood pressure, cholesterol and helps in heart health.
  5. Green Tea: is packed with flavonoids and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which are antioxidants. In studies, it’s shown that ECGC helps boost your immunity. Green tea also contains L-theanine which is an amino acid that helps in the production of germ fighting compounds called T-cells, which reduce inflammation in the body and helps fight infections.
  6. Dark Chocolate: The Cocoa found in dark chocolate can strengthen the defence of our immune system. Dark chocolate may help fight a stubborn cough. It contains an antioxidant called theobromine, which may help boost your immunity by protecting the body’s cells from free radicals. But dark chocolate is high in calories and saturated fat, so it is important to maintain portion control.

These are the few foods which help boost your immunity. With these, there are many more foods that help us, such as amla, haridra, neem, tulsi and ashwagandha. They are known to strengthen the immune function. As with all foods, you need to maintain portion control. Before you try any of the above foods, check with your doctor, dietitian or nutritionist.

Diet & Exercise: How Timanna Gudi Battled Diabetes

Timanna GudiAccess to medication is easy! We live in a day and age where even a sneeze can be seen as a good enough reason to swallow a pill. The number of those pills only increase with time as health deteriorates. The more pills you swallow, the more you realize that they aren’t working. Without intervention, without data or without trying, you never realize that a pill is not the answer, it is your lifestyle! In the face of adversity, change is imperative. Here’s how 49 yr old Timanna Gudi made a positive U-turn!

Hailing from Hubli, Karnataka, this mechanical engineer by qualification worked with an MNC as a managing director. His job responsibilities and efforts placed immense stress on his wellbeing. Realizing this, he knew he had to quit. He did so 5 years back and started his own business. However, this did not change anything and his health problems continued.

Battling Diabetes

In 2008, Timanna Gudi was diagnosed with Diabetes. This was just one part of his struggle. Along with diabetes, he had to face hypertension and high cholesterol as well! He was immediately put on medication and with every visit to the doctor, his dosage only seemed to increase. He would have to get tests and visit the doctor every 3 months while his doctor only increased the number of medicines. With no concrete solution in sight, Timanna was only confused.

Making Lifestyle Modifications to Fight Diabetes

He happened to come across a talk by B M Hedge, Dean of Manipal Medical College and a renowned doctor. He said that people shouldn’t be visiting doctors for lifestyle diseases like diabetes and cholesterol. The medicines they need are available in their kitchens. Of course, medical assistance is required in case of an emergency but it must be supplemented by a healthy lifestyle. This got Timanna thinking…

He had lost his Dad and his elder sister to diabetes in spite of them being on heavy medications like him. He told himself that if his condition is a disorder, there should be a way to bring it in order! This very thought became the turning point which would pivot his life to balance and wellbeing.

He came to Pune  in 2011 and joined a therapy called Freedom from Diabetes. He managed to get rid of all his medicines in a matter of 40 days through diet control and some light exercise. From then on, he began advocating his approach to everyone who was affected by the same medical condition as his. He gave them hope that they too could change!

Joining GOQii and Being the Force

In 2018, he bought some equipment to perform exercises at home. He followed YouTube channels and performed his routine accordingly. However, he ended up with a frozen shoulder due to an incorrect position. This kept him from exercising for about 8-9 months.

In March 2019, a friend introduced him to GOQii. He was intrigued with the idea of coaches demonstrating exercises LIVE on the app. The GOQii app solved two of his needs i.e. exercise and nutrition. He was getting expert advice from topics relating to a healthy diet, lifestyle, meditation and so on. He saw GOQii as an opportunity to get back into routine!

He joined during the India Steps Challenge and began competing, clocking in 6000 steps a day. He initially started with basic walking and increased his target to 12,000 steps after he invited a few of his friends. Due to walking too much, he began losing a lot of weight and was underweight by 7kg. He was asked to stop walking and jogging completely. To keep the momentum of his physical activity going, he began strength training in order to build muscle mass.

He is a regular on GOQii Play. He watches Coach Tufail Qureshi, Coach Alistrair Fernandes and Coach Shweta Kariya, following the workout routines demonstrated by them on a daily basis. As his work requires him to travel often, he carries a resistance band in his luggage as suggested by Play Coaches. He feels that a resistance band is a handy equipment that can be used to target any body part!

Being lactose intolerant, he shifted to a vegan diet. This essentially means that he avoids milk, curd and cheese. He avoids processed foods like bread, biscuits, etc. He begins his day with a glass of green smoothie which is a wholesome blend of raw Spinach (Palak) or any other leafy vegetable coupled with Betel leaf, Pudina (Mint), Tulsi (Holy Basil), Curry Leaves, Cinnamon Powder, Black Pepper and one fruit along with soaked nuts and seeds.

He follows this up with 45mins to an hour of exercise. His breakfast is more protein-based which includes a dal-based Cheela or sprouts and salad. In between meals, he grabs a spoonful of any seeds or a cup of green tea. His Lunch includes a Roti, one bowl each of dal, vegetable and raw salad. He also drinks Apple Cider Vinegar, which he believes has helped in keeping his body more alkaline. His family mostly uses cold pressed virgin coconut oil instead of refined oil.

Opting For Natural Methods Instead of Medicines

Timanna Gudi reiterates that commitment is absolutely necessary. There is no way you can cheat or give in to temptations. He strongly believes that Diabetes is a medical condition which should be eradicated from India.

He says, “The medicines never stop and you just keep losing your vital organs to it slowly. However, everybody is different and not all solutions suit everyone. You need to go test and try before settling down with what suits you.”

He in fact, also got rid of his Acute Bronchitis, something which he suffered from since childhood which required him to use inhalers. He did so by practicing Pranayama (You too can reap the benefits of this wonderful practice. Here are 6 Variations of Pranayama and their Benefits)

In the course of his time fighting diabetes, he has also helped his younger brother reduce his sugar levels. He feels it is his duty to share the knowledge he has gained from his experience combating lifestyle disorders.

Timanna feels GOQii is a fantastic platform with lot of resources that can benefit anyone and everyone. He regularly shops on the GOQii Health Store and advocates the fact that you get good options at competitive rates.

We wish Timanna Gudi the best for his journey. If this story inspired you or if you are fighting your own uphill battle against a lifestyle disease, share your thoughts in the comments below!
