GO GREEN this Ganesh Chathurthi

Ganesh Chathurthi The environment is paramount. If we keep our environment clean, it automatically creates a healthy atmosphere for us to live in. The environment encompasses a whole lot but, among all environmental issues, ‘pollution’ is one that is widely talked about as it affects all of us on a daily basis. It is no secret that the city deals with a lot of pollution after Ganesh Chaturthi. Let’s take a look at the various things we can do to compensate for or speed up damage control.

In a year old report published by the World Health Organization (WHO), 13 of the top 20 most polluted cities are from India. In the aftermath of each festival, it goes from bad to worse. It’s not just land and water that are affected, but loud music above acceptable decibels also affect our health and the health of the animals around us. More so, there is an incredible amount of waste generated during this period. So what can we do to restore balance to the environment on an individual level?

The way we take care of an expensive electronic gadget is different from the way we take care of the green tree in our vicinity. The difference is that we are incapable of understanding the loss of rare natural resources. Each time we use any natural resource, it seldom occurs to us how we are going to reproduce the same rare resource.  The day we decide to think about our future generations, is the day when we will put efforts to save the environment.

One of the recent examples set by Mr. Kaustubh Tamhankar, a common man from Thane, Maharashtra, has proved that we can lead an eco-friendly lifestyle. For the past 12 years, he has not generated a single piece of garbage in his house. How has he been able to do this? Very systematically, everyday he segregates wet and dry garbage in his house. With the wet garbage he makes vermin-compost. It is his determination and motivation that has kept him going. Today, he has also encouraged his neighbors to do the same.

Going green is easier than you think. There are little things you can do every day to help reduce greenhouse gases and make a less harmful impact on the environment. Taking care of the Earth is not just a responsibility – it’s a privilege. If you search through the internet you will find thousands of ways on how do we adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle but the real struggle is to adopt.

Some of the simple ways which could become a part of your eco-friendly lifestyle could be:

  1. Reduce, Reuse & Recycle: This helps to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away. They conserve natural resources, landfill space and energy.
  2. Go Solar: Increasing demand for electric power has resulted in many businesses resorting to alternative sources of energy. Solar energy is a sustainable choice and one that can be used in various applications.
  3. Carpooling: Carpooling reduces air pollution and traffic congestion, something that benefits all of us! It saves money and reduces congestion on our roads and highways. For short distances, use a bi-cycle to travel. It is pollution free and healthy.
  4. Plant Trees: The simple act of planting a tree benefits the environment in many ways – from filtering air to reducing soil erosion, providing shade and helping recycle water.
  5. Conserve Water: Water conservation is the most effective and environmentally sound method to fight global warming and help in reducing scarcity of water.

If we all do our part, we can help reverse the effects of global warming.  We owe it to ourselves and each other to help make a difference.

Wish you all a Green and Happy Ganesh Chathurthi!

5 Tips To Maintain A Healthy Gut This Monsoon

5 Tips To Maintain A Healthy Gut This MonsoonThe fresh, dewy weather, the chirping birds and the amazing smell of wet mud! The rainy season has its own charm but along with it, it also brings a host of diseases and infections. One such being a compromised Gut! The symptoms of a compromised gut may include an upset stomach, acidity, bloatedness, flatulence, gas, etc. making it crucial to maintain a healthy gut during this season.

How Can You Maintain A Healthy Gut?

Here are 5 simple yet effective ways in which you can maintain a healthy gut:

  1. Add Ginger/Garlic: These are the most commonly used herbs in our households and they provide us with an array of benefits. Raw Ginger/Garlic acts as a Prebiotic (food) for friendly gut bacteria, thereby improving gut health. Gingerol and Allicin present in them respectively, are found to have antibacterial and antifungal properties which keep infections at bay. Adding fresh herbs to your food/soups or drinking a warm cup of Ginger tea will be a great way to improve gut health.
  2. Eat Cooked Foods Over Raw Foods: Cooking has a bacterio-cidal (Bacteria killing) effect on the food prepared. Humidity provides a conducive environment for bacterial and fungal growth. Raw foods can be a host for bacterial growth. Hence, cooking foods rather than consuming them raw is a better alternative. Eg: Having a veg soup over a raw veg salad will be a better alternative.
  3. Eat Fermented Foods: Probiotics are the beneficial gut bacteria which work as the first line of defense against any infection. They also synthesize Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFA) and Vitamin K in the body, thereby giving energy. Adding Idlis, dosas, homemade curds, Khimchi, Kefir, etc. to your diet will improve the number of probiotics and thereby improve gut health.
  4. Consume Fruits/Vegetables Immediately After Cutting: If vegetables or fruits are cut and left exposed to air, it can attract flies or insects which can infest the food. If this food is consumed, it can cause infections and affect gut health. Hence, eat the fruit/vegetable immediately after cutting/chopping it, or cover it if you wish to consume it later.
  5. Eat Light: Foods such as rice, dal, legumes, soups, vegetables, fruits, Khichdi, etc. are lighter on the stomach and are easily digested and absorbed as opposed to the tempting fried Pakoras, vada pav, etc. which can cause bloatedness, acidity and/or flatulence.

Do keep these tips in mind and maintain a healthy gut for a healthy you! Did these tips help? Want to know more? Check out Healthy Reads or you can ask your GOQii Coach directly by subscribing for personalised health coaching here: https://goqiiapp.page.link/bsr

6 Health Benefits of Playing Sports

health benefits of sports

Do you remember the days when you were active and indulged in sports. Be it a game of football or cricket in your alley or shooting 3 pointers at your college’s basketball court, running all over the place with your friends created cherished memories. If this was an integral part of your childhood, you are familiar with the health benefits of playing sports!

Sports ensures that you are active both mentally and physically. As you grow older, sometimes due to responsibilities, work, family or other reasons, we tend to give up on our favorite hobby. We have seen so many cases where a person who used to play a sport, gave up and gained weight.

In most cases, once they began playing their favorite sport once again, their body accelerated much faster than the others and they lost all the stubborn fat they couldn’t get rid of otherwise. This happens primarily because your cells have the memory of being active. Remember that it is never too late to start again!

Sports as an extracurricular activity in school and college not only gave you a break from your studies but also helped you get healthier. How you ask? Let’s find out!

6 Health Benefits of Playing Sports

  1. It teaches you to be patient, have a fighting spirit, and never settle for less in life.
  2. Studies show that, children who have been into sports or are blessed with super active genes are quick learners, very social, perform better at any given task, are more attentive in class and their grasping powers are much better than the others.
  3. Sports at an early age helps in life-long fitness habits.
  4. Earlier it was believed that any type of physical exertion can make a person feel more tired and less attentive. This belief was nothing more than a myth. Active people are more intellectual and perform better as compared to sedentary people.
  5. Looking at the growing occurrence of Teenage Obesity, sports can be a great and fun way to help them get back into shape.
  6. Any sport or activity will give you a dash of endorphins, reducing any kind of stress and keeping you happy!

So don’t sit back and think you’re too old for this or too old to get back to the sport you love! Wake up your inner child, grab your equipment, play a sport and encourage those around you to as well!
