Your Guide To Organic Food

Your Guide To Organic FoodWith fitness and healthy lifestyle taking the world by a storm, Organic Food has become a common phrase associated with this storm. Everyone is talking about buying and consuming organic food over processed food but what exactly constitutes organic food?

Basically, organic food is the usual edible food but is produced, processed and packaged in a different way without using chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, non-organic fertilizers, antibiotics or any artificial hormones which are used otherwise. Organic food meets strict standards and is thus, safe to eat.

Advantages of Organic Food:

  • Retains at least 50% more natural nutrients like vitamins and minerals than artificially grown food
  • Not hazardous for health as they contain no chemicals
  • Tastes more natural and delicious as there are no added sweeteners, coloring, flavors and preservatives
  • Organic food protects one from cancer and other diseases
  • Organic agriculture keeps our oceans, lakes, rivers and water supplies clean

Disadvantages of Organic Food:

  • It is an expensive proposition
  • Not easily available everywhere
  • Lack in variety
  • Short shelf life because of no added preservatives

What Types of Foods Are Available as Organic?
Most consumers think of fruits and vegetables when they think of organic food but there are many other organic foods which include pastas, sauces, frozen juices, cereals, soups, chocolate, cookies, meat, poultry, dairy and even wine.

Not only the vegetarian food items but even poultry and meat have gone organic. Isn’t that interesting for non-vegetarians? But how does it work? It is because poultry and animals are fed only organic feeds and that puts them in the category of organic non-vegetarian food. Also, the animal and birds are not given any growth hormones for their mass production.

Tips to Buy Organic Food:

  • Look for the label or logo that has approved the production of the food as “organic”
  • Remain informed about the organization that is an authorized seller of organic food
  • Pay attention on the expiry date. As no preservatives are added to the food, their natural shelf life is less

People may mistake Natural Food as Organic Food as it has not reached many areas in the world due to support from the government, proper authentication, etc. So there is a difference between Natural Food and Organic Food

What is the Difference Between “Organic” and “Natural”?

“Natural” is often misrepresented in product labeling as “healthy” but “natural” only means that the product has undergone minimal processing, no certification or inspection system. Also, “natural” does not necessarily relate to growing methods or the use of preservatives.

As we all know, eating unhealthy creates health issues whereas eating healthy and organic not only helps you get healthier and live better but most importantly, it develops the good habit of eating right.

How to Deal With Body Shaming

How to Deal With Body Shaming
Society is not making it easy to accept our bodies as they are. Body-shaming (criticizing yourself or others because of some aspect of physical appearance) can lead to a vicious cycle of judgment and criticism. The insensitivity has risen to a level where people don’t even mind making fun of someone’s body type!

Today’s generation does not see anything wrong in ‘voicing their opinions’, regardless of the fact that these opinions can actually hurt someone. Most of the young girls and boys today are scared of becoming ‘fat,’ and therefore do crash dieting, eat a low-carb diet – failing to understand that their bodies are in the growth phase, need more carbs-proteins for growth and dieting means a completely different thing! It has also been seen that kids as young as 10-12 years are now worried about the way they look and their ‘size’!

Shockingly, some people believe that making a person feel ashamed of their bodies is a good way of motivating them to transform themselves, and that they will work even harder to achieve it and the sad part is that some people will sham you just for fun!

If someone is unhealthy, telling them how to change that, showing them how they can become fit, and encouraging them to achieve what they desire is the right way, rather than just criticizing them or making fun of them. Discrimination, singling out, and shaming only causes stress and makes any person feel bad. If someone is already overweight/underweight, this attitude can actually stress them out!

Body shaming can cause depression, eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa or binge eating and reduced self-esteem. Here are some tips to avoid body shaming and to silence body shamers as well!

  • Ignore Negativity
Stay away from negative influences or people who make you feel uncomfortable entirely. People like these usually thrive on your discomfort and misery. Trying to correct them or make them see your journey/life situation is absolutely futile.
  • Stand Up For Yourself
Next time when someone makes fun of your looks or mocks you, don’t just withdraw into a shell, speak out against it. Express what is going on inside your mind. Stand up against body shaming. Remember, your motive isn’t to humiliate them, but to make them aware of the negativity of their attitude and the implications of their ‘shaming’ on those affected.
  • Find The Real Issues
Sit down and take some time to think about the real issues that are bothering you. Why are you in this situation? What is it that you want to change and why is that change not happening? Many a times, there may be factors beyond your control that are affecting your efforts. Accept and admit the reality of the situation. If it’s something that is beyond your control, don’t stress on it but move on in life.
  • Share It – Talk About It
Don’t just bottle it up inside! Express the emotion to move through it. Speaking with someone you trust will help you tide over an unpleasant situation. Talking is nature’s antidote to stress. Keeping it inside you will only weaken you further, and destroy your inner motivation.
  • Do Something That Makes You Happy
Go for a walk, talk to a friend, have a healthy dinner! Controlling food with good dietary habits, living a better lifestyle and regular exercise are better coping mechanisms that have helped people over decades to feel good, and ultimately bring the changes they wish to see in themselves. Always divert yourself to something more useful.

The way to end body shaming is not a difficult task, it is simply just keeping your opinion to yourself and letting everyone live in peace. Love yourself for who you are and let others do the same thing. Do remember this is your own journey, and you need to be your own well-wisher and guide.

Hair Loss & Foods To Prevent It

Hair Loss & Foods To Prevent It
After a long and tiring day when I reached home late at night, I had this good idea to get a head massage to be able to sleep well. I started massaging my head gently with oil. After a while I was shocked to see a mop of hair in my hand. I was losing a lot of hair…

More often than not, we are unaware of hair loss. We are so busy with our daily routine and hectic work schedules that we do not pay attention to these matters. However, let me tell you that it is very important to be aware of everything that is happening within us. We need to understand the reason for hair loss. Anybody can experience hair loss. It is not peculiar to men alone. Women and children can also go through hair loss.

Everyone loses hair. It is normal to lose about 50-100 hair every day. But, if you see bald patches or lots of thinning, you may be experiencing hair loss. There are many causes of hair loss. Women may notice hair loss after giving birth. People under lot of stress can see noticeable hair loss. Some diseases and medical treatments can cause hair loss. Even how you style and care for your hair can cause hair loss.

It may be temporary or permanent, and the most common cause of hair loss is a medical condition called hereditary hair loss. Hair loss can happen in many different ways, depending on the problem that’s causing it. It can come suddenly or gradually and affect your scalp.

Let us take a detailed look at the some of the reasons that cause hair loss:

  • Hormonal Changes: The most common hair loss is a hereditary condition called male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. Genetically susceptible people and certain sex hormones trigger a particular pattern of permanent hair loss. Most common in men, this type of hair thinning can begin as early as puberty. Hormonal changes and imbalance can also cause temporary hair loss. This could be found in women due to child birth or the onset of menopause.
  • Medical Conditions that can lead to hair loss are thyroid problems, skin infections or other skin disorders. Hair loss can also be caused by Alopecia Areata, which is a condition that starts suddenly and causes patchy hair loss in children and young adults. This condition may result in complete baldness (Alopecia Totalis) but in about 90% of people with the condition, the hair returns within a few years.
  • Medications can also cause hair loss. Drugs used to treat cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems and blood pressure are some of them.
  • Physical or Mental Shock: Many people experience a general thinning of hair several months after a physical or emotional shock.
  • Hair Pulling Disorder: Mental illness causes people to have an irresistible urge to pull out their hair whether it’s from the scalp, eyebrows or other areas of the body. Hair pulling from scalp often leaves patchy bald spots on the head.
  • Certain Hair Styles: Traction hair loss can occur if the hair is pulled too tightly into hairstyles such as pigtails and cornrows.

For some types of hair loss, hair may grow without any treatment while for other types of hair loss treatment may help the hair grow back.

It is very important to understand the causes of hair loss. You should make a note of all the possible changes that happen in your day to day life. Understand the cause and work towards it. Few tips such as eating healthy, nutritional and balanced food may help. Avoid tight hairstyles and avoid compulsive twisting, rubbing or pulling of your hair.

Here are a few tips that I have chalked out that will help you maintain healthy hair. Certain foods in our diet will keep your scalp healthy. Foods that contain proteins, iron, silica and zinc help preventing hair loss.

  • Protein: Hair is primarily made of protein and therefore, it makes sense to eat a protein rich diet. Stick to leaner proteins such as fish, chicken, calf’s liver, low fat cheese, eggs, almonds, beans and yogurt. Soy milk and tofu are also smart options to add to your diet as they are high in protein and low in bad fats.
  • Iron: Iron plays a key role in manufacturing hemoglobin, the part of blood that carries oxygen to your body‘s organs and tissues. Adding more iron to your diet doesn’t mean you have to feast on liver, day in and day out, but when you are craving for something sweet, remember that dried fruits and cherry juice are packed with iron. Try eggs, dates, raisins, dark green leafy vegetables such as Kale and whole grain cereals. Vitamin C improves the absorption of iron, so fruits such as orange, strawberries and lemons should be in your grocery list of foods that prevent hair loss.
  • Silica: Add silica to your daily menu and see the difference because body uses silica to help it absorb vitamins and minerals. If you are not consuming silica, eating vitamins might not help much. Silica can be found in bean, sprouts and skin of cucumber. You will also find it in red and green peppers and potatoes.
  • Zinc: Many men who suffer from hair loss are found to have zinc deficiencies. Zinc plays a key role in many of the body’s functions, from cell reproduction to hormonal balance, which in turn affects hair growth. Zinc manages the glands that attach to your hair follicles. Eat Zinc-heavy foods such as red meats, poultry, mussels, shrimp, nuts, and oysters.

Just as your overall health will improve from eating a balanced diet, so should the health of your hair. Do not eat things that speed up hair loss. You may be experiencing a thinning on top already, but you can counteract this problem (or at least slow it down) by eating from every food group daily — concentrating on foods that are rich in protein, iron, silica, and zinc.

Time Management Can Change Your Life

How Time Management Can Help You
Time is a precious commodity.  We all chase it but never have enough, given our busy schedules. Ever stopped to ask yourself why you keep running out of time? Ever wondered if you’re working in a systematic manner?

My father always said that there are two kinds of people:

(i) Those who work hard
(ii) Those who work smart

Those who work hard do their work without giving it a thought and work monotonously. The smart workers are those who do their work in a systematic and planned manner, adhere to time management and also enjoy what they are doing.

Which brings us to the question, what exactly constitutes Time Management? Time management is the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity.

To be successful is to manage your time well. It helps utilize the available time in an optimum manner to achieve one’s personal and professional goals. Without time management you will not steer your life and you’ll eventually end up doing exactly what other people want you to do. Time management helps you to take control of your life in the right manner. You decide what you want to do and where you want to go. Practicing time management has lots of benefits. Once you get a hang of it, you can work more, learn faster and play more.

How Does Time Management Affect Your Health?
Today, work pressure has everyone stressed to the bone. More than often, people stay awake till morning trying to complete their work. During the day, they are seated with eyes glued to a machine. All these negatively impact the body and the mind. No physical activity means lack of movement in your joints, muscles and hence one is prone to joint pains and other lifestyle diseases.

If you practice time management, you can complete your work and still have time to take care of your health. Believe me, you will start feeling positive. This in turn will help you be more stress-free. For most adults, sleep is the main factor that is compromised due to busy schedules. For students and professionals, moving about without sleep is a regular affair under the garb of wanting to achieve their targets. They may complete all their tasks, but do not realize that their mental and physical health is getting affected. Proper time management may prevent this.

Benefits of Time Management

1. Increase in Productivity: Practicing time management can increase your productivity by helping you finish your work in the shortest possible time.

2. Chances of Moving up the Ladder: In corporate sectors, the better you perform, the higher your chances of growth are. With proper time management, you could end up becoming a star performer in your organization

3. Reduced Stress: If you manage your time well, you do not have to panic or push yourself to finish your work. You will get your work done at the said time, thus relieving you of stress and unnecessary work pressure.

4. Higher Income: It is a well-known fact that in today’s world, time reciprocates money. Managing your time helps you accommodate more time to take up new assignments, opening up many more doors of opportunities.

5. Boost in Self-Confidence: If you are completing your work within a given time frame and delivering quality as well, it will certainly boost your self-confidence and be fruitful for your career advancements.

6. Stronger Family Bonds: Time management will help you spend quality time with your family and friends, which seems next to impossible these days. Time management helps you maintain a fine balance between your professional and personal life. Your family bonding will be much better.

7. Better for Health: For better health, you need at least 7 to 8 hours of sound sleep. If you spend the whole night finishing your pending tasks, then you are certainly evoking great health hazards. There are many health related irregularities which are caused by lack of sleep.

All of my above explanations prove that the benefits of time management are irrefutable. Life is all about accomplishments and enjoyments and efficient time management is the only instrument which helps you to find both. You can’t allow yourself to sink under the files of pending tasks and persistently overlook your family responsibilities or personal necessities. Adopt a proficient time management technique to lead a balanced and prosperous life.
