10 Ways To Eliminate Bad Habits & Embrace Good Ones This Diwali

eliminate bad habits this DiwaliIt’s that month of the year when festivities start. We have just finished with Dusshera, an important Hindu festival, and now we are gearing ourselves for the Festival of Lights. Deepawali is celebrated on the occasion of gaining success over the bad (Ravana) and the returning of goodness. Bad Qualities could be the 10 heads of Ravana namely:

  1. Kama vasana (Lust)
  2. Krodha (Anger)
  3. Moha (Attachment)
  4. Lobha (Greed)
  5. Mada (Pride)
  6. Matsara (Jealousy)
  7. Swartha (Selfishness)
  8. Anyaaya (Injustice)
  9. Amanavta (Cruelty)
  10. Ahankara (Ego)

If we can eliminate the above bad qualities within ourselves, then we, in all likelihood, would end up being better human beings. Today, we have modern day demons in our life, which are making it unhealthy and lead us towards a bad and shorter life. This Diwali, let’s get rid of the modern day and olden days demons together!

10 Modern Day Bad Habits We Need To Eliminate This Diwali

1. Smoking
I do not think I need to explain what smoking is? Smoking is responsible for several diseases, such as cancer, long-term (chronic) respiratory diseases, and heart disease, as well as premature death. You can read how smoking affects your health in the following articles:

  • Smoking is Injurious to health – http://goqii.com/blog/caution-smoking-is-injurious-to-health/
  • Effects of Smoking on your Muscles – http://goqii.com/blog/effects-of-smoking-on-your-muscles/

2. Alcohol and drugs
Today, most of us are used to late night parties-  be it an office party, a birthday party, a marriage anniversary or the likes. One of the most common beverage in parties is ALCOHOL! In any celebration, you’ll find a number of alcoholic beverages that flow like water and we tend to consume them without much thought. This leads to a number of health complications. These complications have been talked about at length in this article on the Effects of Alcohol on your Health.

3. Stress
Stress is one of the most understated evils of our time hiding under the veils of office work, relationships and other everyday affairs. You can name any lifestyle diseases and one of the reasons behind it, in most cases, is stress. Stress can also lead to weight gain! Keeping stress under control will not only help you stay calm and relaxed but also helps you keep your weight under control and lifestyle diseases at bay! So manage your stress well!

4. Unhealthy Eating Habits
We are well aware that we need to form good eating habits to stay healthy but do we really follow them? Its only after we have put on excess weight that we try to manage our diet or follow some sort of diet plan to reduce weight. Instead of doing that, isn’t it better to eat healthy before things go wrong? While you’re forming healthy eating habits, make sure that you are also aware of the habits that are destroying your health and correct them.

5. Laziness
There is no dearth of excuses to avoid exercises and make ourselves lazy. One does not realize that laziness leads us to a sedentary lifestyle and eventually to a shorter life. You don’t even need to do any strenuous exercises or hit the gym daily. Just basic walking, taking the elevator instead of stairs and moving as much as you can will help you stay healthy. The core idea is to keep yourself active and off the couch. If you still think you’re bogged down by chores and do not have time, you can turn your daily chores into workouts!

6. Denial (about our health – physical or mental)
Another dangerous demon is denial. People will go to any extent to not find out about their health. Most are generally ok not getting a health check up done. This can be quite dangerous. Getting regular health check-ups is imperative because many health conditions can be resolved if detected early.

7. Sleep
For a better health, you need sound sleep of about 6 to 8 hours. If you spend the whole night finishing your pending tasks or binge watching a show, then you are certainly walking into a health hazard waiting to happen. There are too many health related irregularities which are caused by lack of sleep. But, if you have a proper sleep, you can get rid of all your issues. If you find it difficult to fall asleep, try these breathing techniques or follow these tips for better sleep.

8. Environment
While celebrating Diwali, we all try to burst crackers that pollute the environment. If you breathe in such an environment, it will only affect your health. After Diwali, the pollution still persists and can affect the heart and brain. People with existing heart or lung diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart disease, or ischemic heart disease are at increased risk of admission to hospitals based on the severity of an already existing problem. Given these issues, it would be nice if we use eco friendly ways of celebrating Diwali.

9. Sweets and Immunity
Most sweets contain refined sugar, which directly impacts our immunity. Sweets are quite pleasurable to eat, but eating too many can negatively impact your health. Sweets often lack beneficial nutrients and are full of detrimental ones, including saturated fat, sugars and artificial sugars. Excessive sweet consumption can increase the risk of Diabetes, Crohn’s Disease and lead to tooth decay. Additionally, it can also reduce HDL cholesterol and bone strength. While you might not be able to avoid sweets, eat them in moderation and be smart about it!

10. Unsafe Sex
And the last demon on our list is unsafe sex! We are a nation that’s very uncomfortable talking about sex and this has led to the state where a lot of people are ignorant about safe sex. Unsafe sex can lead to Sexual Transmitted Diseases like HIV/AIDS or unwanted pregnancies. Always remember that you must use a condom. If you don’t have one at that particular time, use other forms of contraceptives, but remember that other forms of contraceptives do not guard against STDs. Prevention is better than cure!

So we hope you take stock of these modern day demons and eliminate bad habits this Diwali! When Not Eating Becomes a Disease: What Anorexia Really Does to You or Someone You Love

Anorexia Nervosa

Following healthy habits is good. It’s always nice to have a plan for healthy eating and follow it steadily with discipline. But what happens when you overindulge in a dieting plan? As we all know, anything in excess is bad and the same goes for dieting or having an unhealthy obsession with losing weight which may make one do things that can cause more damage than good. Having said that, I’d like to highlight an eating disorder that I recently came across called Anorexia Nervosa.

What is Anorexia Nervosa?

Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder which is characterized by low body weight, fear of gaining weight, and a distorted perception of weight. This means that despite having normal body weight, these people feel that they are overweight, or even if they will eat a bite extra, they feel that they will suddenly gain weight. So they prefer being on a very low calorie diet, prefer restricted foods, focusing excessively on the portion they eat. They also try to control their weight by vomiting after eating, or misusing laxatives, diet aids, diuretics or even enemas. At times, they also try to lose weight by excessive exercising just post consuming meals.

Nervosa is not about calorie counting, it is more about one’s psychological aspect which can be extremely dangerous or even life threatening to try to cope up with emotional distress. Anorexic people often tend to equate thinness with self worth.

What Are The Symptoms?

The most evident physical symptom of Nervosa is Starvation, and let us not confuse it with conscious eating. Apart from it, it also includes some emotional and behavioural issues which include unrealistic perception of one’s own body in terms of being fat or fear of gaining weight.

It is difficult to notice the signs and symptoms among the people, but there are few alarming signs which can be noticed by near and dear ones like low body weight, or thin appearance, abnormal blood counts, fatigue, dizziness, and insomnia, thinning of hair, blue discoloration of fingers, irregular bowel movements, irregular heart rhythms, and dehydration.

Also some emotional and behavioural symptoms would include:

  • Skipping meals or refusing to eat
  • Making excuses like denial for hunger, or unwell
  • Avoiding to eat in public
  • Social withdrawal
  • Irritability and Insomnia

Diagnosis

Though it is difficult to diagnose Anorexia Nervosa at an early stage, the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA’s) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders has set diagnosis criteria for people prone to being Anorexic.

  1. Restricted calorie intake as per the requirement of the body in terms of age, height, gender and physical health.
  2. Misconception of being overweight, despite being actually underweight.
  3. A full medical history can also help to reach the outcome

Treatment and Recovery

Treatment includes some medications, nutritional counseling, psychotherapy and family counseling as well which would depend on one’s level of being anorexic. Generally people refuse to accept that they fall in the category but a proper counseling session can help one recover soon.

There is no harm in Being Picky about putting food in your mouth, but this should be done in certain limits by working on calorie counting, or choosing the healthiest option and not in excessive fear to gain weight. The body needs fuel as well to work its system out. The correct way to lose weight is by eating healthy and exercising regularly, and not “DIETING”. Long term anorexia nervosa can lead to serious medical issues like low bone density, anemia, or some gastrointestinal issues as well.

So, if you feel any such symptoms, or you know someone prone to it, do share the article with them, and we at GOQii are always there to help you recover in whatever best way possible.

7 Reasons Why Pulses Are Good For You!

pulses As we celebrate World Food Day this year, focusing on the theme of “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future,” it’s important to highlight the crucial role that pulses can play in achieving food security and promoting better health. Pulses have always been a significant part of the Indian diet, valued for their rich nutritional content, affordability, and availability. They are an excellent source of plant-based protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, making them a vital tool in nourishing populations globally.

There are hundreds of varieties of pulses grown worldwide—like Lentils, Dry Beans (Common Beans), Black eyed peas (Cowpeas), Chickpeas, Pigeon peas (Toor Dal), and Kidney Beans—that are not only nutritious but also sustainable and accessible to all. This makes pulses a key to ensuring the right to food and building a better future for everyone.

If “Pulses” was an abbreviation, it could easily stand for:

P – Protein Rich

U – Universally Distributed

L – Low Cost

S – Source of Dietary Fiber

E – Easily Available

Despite being seen as a “poor man’s food” due to their low cost, pulses are a nutritional powerhouse that shouldn’t be ignored. Here’s why pulses are essential for a healthier life and a sustainable future:

7 Reasons to Include Pulses in Your Diet:

  1. Good for all age groups: From infants to the elderly, pulses provide essential nutrients that promote growth, development, and tissue repair, supporting a better quality of life for all.
  2. Affordable and Accessible: Pulses are widely available and affordable for all income groups. This makes them a vital food for ensuring the right to nutritious food, aligning perfectly with the theme of World Food Day.
  3. Heart-Healthy: Low in saturated and trans fat, pulses can help lower cholesterol levels, reduce blood pressure, and maintain a healthy weight. Their heart-healthy benefits contribute to a better life for millions globally.
  4. Reduce Risk of Chronic Illness: Regular consumption of pulses may reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Cancer, and Heart disease, making them a powerful ally in promoting long-term health.
  5. Long Shelf Life: Pulses, being dried seeds, can be stored for long periods, reducing food waste and loss. This supports global efforts toward food security and sustainability, a core focus of World Food Day.
  6. Rich in Antioxidants: Pulses like Red Kidney Beans are packed with antioxidants that help fight inflammation and boost metabolism, ensuring a healthy body and mind.
  7. Improves Protein Quality When Paired with Cereals: Pulses improve the protein quality of meals when combined with cereals, making them an excellent source of balanced nutrition, especially for those who rely on plant-based diets.

Pulses: A Path to a Better Future

Pulses are not just nutritious and affordable—they also play a significant role in sustainable agriculture. They require fewer resources like water and fertilizers, making them eco-friendly and vital in reducing our environmental footprint. By embracing pulses, we support a sustainable food system that helps ensure everyone’s right to food, paving the way for a better future.

This World Food Day, let’s recognize the value of pulses as a versatile, nutritious, and sustainable food source for all. These reasons should inspire you to stock your kitchen with a variety of pulses and embrace their benefits!

9 Hidden Benefits of Coffee You May Not Know

hidden benefits of coffeeWhat makes your morning better? Is it the bright morning sun, ushering in a new day with its warm rays? Or the melodious chirping of birds? Is it the fresh aromas of flowers or morning dew? If you thought of a freshly brewed cup of coffee, a newspaper and sitting under a blue sky, then we have a lot in common!

Yes, I orchestrate my mornings with Coffee! If coffee is considered bad and me being a nutritionist, you might wonder why I am starting my day with it? Well, today I am writing to make you believe that, “A bad day with coffee is better than a good day without it!”

Surprisingly, coffee has some amazing hidden benefits which we don’t often address. Apart from the warmth, the energy boost, and freshness, there are a lot more benefits that coffee beans offer.

Let’s Brew the Hidden Benefits of Coffee

  1. Keeps the Body Cells Healthy: Sipping coffee every morning is like flooding our body with antioxidants that help eliminate free radicals. Not every antioxidant has this power. Only Coffee antioxidants are blessed with the ability to fight and delay the death of cells, so keep sipping!
  2. Digestion of Carbs Gets Easier: Coffee and carbohydrates work really well together. A few chemicals in coffee beans help the body turn those wonderful bread nutrients into energy. Antioxidants such as chlorogenic acid, quinic acid found in coffee help the body process and utilize carbs effectively. Isn’t that wonderful! Now we know why coffee and sandwiches makes the best pair! It’s all scientific.
  3. Sip to Kick Stress & Depression Away: Caffeine impacts neurotransmitters in the brain, including the “feel good” hormones serotonin and dopamine. The mental boost we get after the first sip of coffee isn’t all due to caffeine.
  4. Aids Hair Growth: Growth-promoting effects of caffeine on human hair follicles encourage hair growth in both men and women. Caffeine helps to block the effects of DHT, the chemical hormone responsible for hair loss.
  5. Improves Performance on Tracks: Sipping coffee as a pre-workout allows muscles to better convert fat to fuel, making you more energized. Try this amazing bulletproof coffee recipe, made popular by our Founder and CEO Vishal Gondal! Trust me, it does wonders!
  6. Coffee-licious Daily Scrub: What else to ask for? Coffee does wonders as an exfoliant! Mix fresh or ground coffee beans with olive oil or coconut oil, and scrub to get clean, softer skin.
  7. Good for the Liver: A cup of coffee a day, keeps cirrhosis away. Yes! That is true! Researchers say that coffee protects the liver and reduces the chances for cirrhosis by 80%.
  8. Green Coffee is a Multitasker: Green coffee is unroasted coffee beans that grow on the coffee plant, called Coffea Arabica. It is rich in antioxidant, increases metabolic rate by 3% to 11%, encouraging weight loss. It is also a natural detox, controls unnecessary food cravings and stops us from overeating.
  9. White Coffee is NEW in Town: White Coffee comes from the same hard green coffee beans as regular coffee. Not to be confused with the creamy coffee we get in coffee shops, this one is different.  The main differences between the two are in the roasting process, roasting time, and the resulting flavor. White Coffee has up to 50% more caffeine, but is less acidic making it easy on the stomach and retaining more antioxidants.

Do these awesome hidden benefits of coffee make you feel like brewing a cup? Just remember that having anything in excess is bad for your health. Drinking too much coffee may do more harm than good. So, limit your coffee intake to only 2 cups a day and avoid sipping on coffee after 7 PM, or it may end up hampering your sleep.

We wish you all a Happy International Coffee Day! How do you enjoy your coffee? Tell us in the comments below.
