5 Ways to Improve Immunity Naturally

improve immunity naturallyWith the Omicron variant looming over our heads, there’s one very important thing to realize – the virus attacks people with a compromised or low immune system. A strong and properly functioning immune system helps by protecting you in your daily life as you come into contact with germs and bugs from other people, pets and the environment around you. Without a healthy immune system, you could pick up infections and infectious diseases more easily, and the effects could be serious – even fatal. So let’s look at ways in which we can improve immunity naturally! 

Tips to Improve Immunity Naturally

1. Healthy Diet
Following a HEALTHY DIET rich in ANTIOXIDANTS is essential to supporting your immune system. Include more fruits and vegetables, as they are rich in antioxidants. They help combat free radicals—chemicals by products known to damage DNA and suppress the immune system. A few examples of immunity building food items includes – Citrus fruits, Lemon, Amla, Kiwi, Papaya, Bell peppers, Broccoli, Mushrooms, Spinach, Garlic, Ginger, Turmeric, Yogurt, Nuts and Seeds, Seafood and Green Tea. 

Choose healthy fats (such as the omega-3 fatty acids available in oily fish, flaxseed, and canola/soya bean oil) over saturated fats (found in meat and dairy products). Also, healthy fats may help increase your body’s production of compounds involved in regulating immunity. Drinking plenty of water helps our cells operate efficiently and allows the body to process food and eliminate waste. Reduce your intake of Alcohol and avoid smoking as well. 

2. Regular Exercise
Incorporating a regular workout regime, in your daily routine, has been scientifically proven to boost our immune system. Research continues to support a link between moderate, regular exercise and a healthy immune system. Regular exercise mobilises the T cells, a type of white blood cell which guards the body against infection. However, Intense exercise seems to cause a temporary decrease in immune system function. Research has found that during intense physical exertion, the body produces certain hormones (Stress hormones) that temporarily lower immunity. If you are training for ultra-endurance events, a key component of your training should be including enough rest and recovery days to allow your body (immune system) to recover. 

3. Reduce Stress
Chronic stress can leave you with a low immunity by suppressing the immune response of your body as it releases the hormone cortisol, when in a stressful situation. Cortisol interferes with the T-cells to reproduce and receive signals from the body. Cortisol also reduces the antibody secretory IgA, which lines the gut and respiratory tract, which are our first line of defense against various pathogens. To keep your stress levels in check, you should follow the practice of Yoga, meditation or deep breathing in your regular routine. Take up a hobby or involve yourself in some recreational activity.  Talk to friends/ family about your concerns and seek professional help, if required.

4. Sleep Well
Another healthy habit vital to preventing sickness is getting a full eight hours of sleep each night. Sound and sufficient sleep help regulate the immune function. Several studies have shown that those who sleep less than six hours per night or who have a sleep disorder were more likely to have colds and other respiratory infections. Try to sleep for 7–8 hours and avoid having a late-night too often.

5. Good Hygiene
The first line of defence against germs is following good personal hygiene! It lowers your risk for diseases and illnesses commonly spread through viruses and bacteria. Your hands come into contact with bacteria/virus every time you cough, use the restroom, touch your pet, or touch surfaces such as stair railings used frequently by others. Failing to wash your hands and body regularly can cause the bacteria/virus to multiply, increasing the risk for infection and other health problems. You can stop an infection before it begins and avoids spreading it to others with these easy measures: 

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before preparing food and after using the restroom, after coming back home from or whenever you feel they are dirty. 
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze or cough, or cough into your elbow rather than your hand.

Are There Any Winter Superfoods?

winter superfoods“Superfoods” are foods that have a substantial amount of nutrients and very few calories. They contain a high volume of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. But, do winter superfoods really exist? 

Do Winter Superfoods Really Exist? 

Some winter foods do have a powerful impact but it’s your overall diet that really matters. Enriching your diet with nutrient-rich foods may help deal with issues such as joint problems, weight gain, constipation, dry skin and hair fall in winter and let you enjoy good immunity, good skin and overall good health. Let’s look at a few foods which may be considered as Winter Superfoods. 

  • Pearl Millet /Bajra: is a versatile food rich in fibre, magnesium, potassium and vitamin B. It promotes heart health, controls BP, muscle gain and helps you get dense, frizz-free hair with great volume. The high iron content plays a vital role in curing anaemia and can help to strengthen your bones as well. It is a heating grain, so it should be had in winters only. You can use Bajra to make malt, bhakri, ladoo, khichdi, cookies, uttapam, idli and dosa. 
  • Green Vegetables: Add green leafy vegetables to your meals to fight infections and boost immunity. These are excellent sources of fibre, folate and carotenoids, antioxidants, vitamins C and K and the minerals iron and calcium. Include palak, methi, sarson, pudina, moringa and green lasun to your diet. Green lasun boosts immunity and alleviates the burning sensation in hands and feet due to its anti-inflammatory properties. You can add them in rotis, dals, juices, soups and chutneys. 
  • Root Vegetables: Include all kinds of root vegetables in your diet, especially during the winter season. Sweet potatoes, broccoli, brussels sprouts, turnip and its leaves have antioxidant properties, vitamin C, are rich in beta carotene, fibre, vitamin A, and potassium. Regular consumption can help in curing constipation, improving immunity and reducing inflammation. Beets are also sources of anthocyanins, that have been linked to lower instances of heart disease, and nitrate – which improves the dilation of blood vessels. You can make soups, tikkis, sabzis or simply roast them. 
  • Seasonal Fruits: Citrus fruits are bursting with Vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants, making them ideal during winter. Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, pomegranates, kiwi, guava, amla and lemons are also high in minerals and phytochemicals that help protect the body from infections and pathogens. They help in enhancing your immunity, reducing hair fall, improving skin and digestive health. Eat a fruit in the morning and the evening as a snack. If you find Amla too sour, consume it with a dash of salt and black pepper or in the form of instant powders.
  • Ghee: is an invaluable source of vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. It helps with joint lubrication, skin hydration and keeps the digestive system functioning well. It can help you boost immunity and prevent yourself from falling sick. Cook your meals in ghee or top your dal, rice, roti, etc. with it. 
  • Til/Sesame Seeds: are a good source of calcium, essential fatty acids, vitamin E and are good for bones, skin and hair. It helps you maintain body temperature and keeps you warm and energetic during winter. Add sesame seeds to your roti, chikki, gajak, ladoo and chutney.
  • Nuts: Peanuts have more protein than any nut (7g per serving), containing more than 30 essential vitamins and minerals, and are a good source of polyphenols, fibre and good fats. Daily intake of almonds and walnuts lower bad cholesterol, control blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation. They are packed with antioxidants, vitamin E and magnesium. They’re also rich in omega 3 and have anti-inflammatory properties. We can have soaked nuts, add them in ladoos, chikkis, granola bars or simply have them as snacks. 
  • Turmeric: is known as a therapeutic superfood due to its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties.Turmeric can help reduce inflammation and fight infections. Make the famous “Haldi Doodh” or a pickle with fresh turmeric.
  • Honey: is another energetic superfood to look upon for winters. You can use it as a substitute for sugar. Mix honey with your tea and sip it every morning to fight cold, sore throat and other infections.
  • Gond: keeps the body warm, protects against the cold, treats cardiovascular, chronic kidney diseases, lubricates the joints and strengthens the bones. It also helps one manage menstrual problems and combat gas issues. You can turn gond into ladoo or panjiri mixture i.e. a mix of gond, wheat flour, jaggery, ghee, nuts and cardamom.
  • Garlic: is a tasty herb that has high amounts of calcium, potassium as well as certain sulphuric compounds that are good for getting rid of infections. You can make chutneys, add it to soups and dals. You can also have crushed garlic with honey in the morning.

How To Stick To Your New Year Resolutions!

new year resolutionsA new year has begun and with it, its once again time to make new resolutions. We’re sure a lot of you have already penned down your new year resolutions but what are these new year resolutions? More often than not, it’s a promise that we make to ourselves or with our near and dear ones to kick one bad habit and imbibe a good change for a better future.

New Year Resolutions Could Be:

  • Weight loss
  • Get fit and regular exercise
  • Eating healthy
  • Joining yoga class
  • Giving up smoking
  • Quitting excessive alcohol consumption
  • Playing a sport

Largely, I have noticed that most resolutions are around health and lifestyle. What is difficult though is to stick to the resolution made. It’s not easy to keep the enthusiasm going week after week. Especially when you have never played a sport or been active in the past. It’s not easy to maintain the same motivation levels throughout the year. Discipline is hard to come by. Most people don’t feel motivated enough and they give up within few days. It takes focus, planning and determination to stick to resolutions made. It takes the same amount of time to change a particular habit.

Tips To Stick To Your New Year Resolutions 

Golden Rule:  Make your goal achievable and do not aim for goals which are too difficult to achieve

  • Once you have decided on your achievable resolution, write it down. Writing it down makes a greater connection between your thinking self and doing self. This makes the resolution more real than it is only in your head.
  • Change one behaviour at a time. Replacing unhealthy behaviours with healthier ones requires time.
  • Fitness cannot be your short-term goal.
  • If you want to eat junk food, think what are the benefits you will derive from it. It’s the same as thinking before making any financial investments. Occasionally you can include a piece of Pizza or a burger but not daily.
  • If you are looking to reduce 20kg then achieve the target by reducing 2-3kg a month. It is not practical to lose 20kg in 2 months because it took years to accumulate all that fat and it will only go away slowly.
  • If you want to quit smoking and you are smoking 20 sticks a day, then reduce it gradually. You cannot stop immediately because it will take some time for your body and mind to adapt to the change.
  • If you intend to start working out, yoga or any other activity in the morning then begin with 3 days a week instead of 7 days a week.
  • For working out, most have the issue of waking up early. Try to start at a time comfortable to you. If you wake up daily at 8am but plan to start working out at 5am then it will seldom happen because your circadian system will take time to adjust. Instead try to wake up at 7 am which is practical and you will continue for a long time.
  • Be positive while thinking about your achievable goal. Instead of saying I cannot do something, say I feel much better doing this.
  • Always tell your near and dear ones about your resolution and seek their support in order to successfully achieve your goal.
  • Review your progress and reward yourself on the first target achieved

Lastly, we would say do not wait for anything. Every day is a new day. Start working on your resolution immediately. There is the famous saying, “Whatever you want to do tomorrow, do it today and whatever you want to do today, do it now!”

Celebrating the New Year? Read This Before You Head Out!

happy new yearIt’s that time of the year again! The Christmas bells ring and the New Year sweeps us yet again! For many, it sweeps with a lot booze & puke! And for many, this happens every week. So here it is guys, the gyaan of what you should and should not do this New Year (or even weekends for that matter).

I am a firm believer of ‘Health First’, be it New Years or Diwali. While the New Year comes once, the ‘dump’ you put inside it wrecks your system in and out. Trust me, if I was the body, I would hate New Years every year of my life!

Let’s Talk About Alcohol

The body can safely process around one unit of pure alcohol per hour. If you drink more than this, your body isn’t able to break it down fast enough and it accumulates in your body. It takes a lot of time to flush it out and the pressure on the liver and the body as a whole is immense.

Binge drinking increases the risk of blackouts, especially on an empty stomach. During this time, a person may do things that they do not remember later. So in case you are planning to drink, know your limits and of course listen to your body. Booze might be free but the body is priceless. Take a call on what you should prioritize. 

Our body is designed to ensure that the nutrients reach the organs. All the food goes through the liver which processes the food and passes it on. Same is the case with alcohol. The liver metabolizes the alcohol, but it can only break down so much at one time. What the liver can’t break down is redirected throughout the rest of the body.

Drugs

Please know that consuming, passing on or giving drugs is illegal. Consuming high quantities of drugs can lead to poisoning and eventual death. Worse, if one is addicted, it is extremely difficult to bounce back to normal. Drugs can leave one in semiconscious/ unconscious conditions leaving the person vulnerable to literally ‘anything’. So if you are partying, or are attending a rave, please be safe! Best, don’t attend!

Too Much of Anything

Be it food, drinks, dancing or loud music – anything in excess is bad for your system just as alcohol, smoking or drugs. Too loud music hits the eardrums. That buzz you get in your head after the loud music is your body telling you that it has had enough! 

Sex is beneficial and super for health, if done safely and with a known partner. So if you know you are going to get high, have a few friends who will protect you from the unwanted attention. Be safe. Else, just plan it with your partner!

Tips for a Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year

  1. In case of excess of alcohol consumption, the person might pass out or vomit. If you are in your senses, be with the person. Ensure they don’t choke on their vomit and that their breathing is normal. If not, rush to the hospital.
  2. If you are hell bent on drinking, ensure you do not have more than a peg in an hour. It will give your body enough time to process it.
  3. Listen to your body! If on any drink, you start feeling uncomfortable, or breathless, stop drinking immediately. Drink a lot of water which will help you flush out the drink. If you still feel uncomfortable, rush to the hospital
  4. If you have done all of what should NOT be done, ensure that you give your body some rest in the coming 2 days. Flush it out by drinking lots of fluids and eating salads. Detox it should be!
  5. Imagine a car loader which is overloaded with stuff. If one keeps overloading it, it will break down eventually. Compare this to your body and load it with only as much as it can take. If you do not know how much the body can take, consider the tips above.
  6. Hire a driver or take the car rentals if you’re going to get high.

I know I sound like an oldie here with no life but I am a firm believer of protecting and befriending the body. If a party has to happen, I personally suggest people to chill with friends at home and order from your favourite food joint. Apart from saving money, I end up playing board games, eating my favorite food, catching up with friends & family and ending with a good night meditation. But everyone is not me!
