12 Steps To Choose the Right Gym For You

12 Steps to Choose The Right Gym For YouWith 2 weeks in to the new year, it is a good time to gauge how many of us are actually sticking to our New Year’s Resolution of being fit and are regularly visiting the gym. Most people who invest in a gym membership at the start of the year as a part of their resolution are often irregular towards the end of January due to lack of motivation or due to certain issues they may have with the gym and the environment there.

So how do you stay motivated? How do you ensure that you won’t quit the gym by August this year? To ensure that you stick to your gym and achieve your goals, we’ve got some pointers that will help you choose the right gym. But before that, you need to ask yourself one question – Do you really need a gym? Given your work schedule, your habits and your goals, does signing up for a gym membership make sense? If you can achieve your goals working out at home, while maintaining your work-life balance, do you really need a gym? If the answer is yes, then read on!

12 Steps To Choose the Right Gym For You

  1. List Your Must-Haves: Before hunting for a gym that suits your taste, you must know what you’re looking for. You need to make a list of your goals, the kind of equipment you need, the services to best aid you in achieving your health goals, the atmosphere and type of gym you are looking for. Having this list handy makes it easier for you to choose a gym you are most likely to be regular at.
  2. Location: This is of prime importance. Before or after a hectic day at work, would you really brave the erratic traffic in your city to reach a gym that is miles away from your home? Your best bet is to choose a decent gym that’s close by and easily accessible, especially if you’re the kind of person who likes to workout after your shift.
  3. Cost: Let’s face it! Irrespective of which gym you like, Cost is the ultimate factor that will decide where you workout. When it comes to cost, you need to ask yourself if the gym membership is worth it. Are you getting additional services with your gym membership? Are you getting services you don’t want? Does your gym membership cover privileges like massages, sauna, a pool, a daycare for your child while you workout or a snack bar? Will you be charged separately for these services or are they included in your deal? Whatever the cost, ensure that you get your money’s worth.
  4. Hours of Operation: There is nothing better than a gym that is flexible with its timings. If you find a gym that is open 24 hours, there’s nothing like it. You might also want to inquire if they are open during public holidays and about the days when the gym will be closed. It’s best to pick a gym that is open most days of the year.
  5. Visit During Peak Hours: No one likes a crowded gym. So before you choose one, take a tour of the gym but not on a weekend or when the gym is relatively empty. Take a tour during the hours you’re more likely to go once you join. This will give you a good insight into the kind of crowd that’s at the gym and how crowded it is during your preferred time. If the line to use an equipment is 5 people long, make a beeline for the exit and head over to your next option.
  6. Personal Trainer: This is another major deciding factor. A Personal Trainer can be a good guide in helping you achieve your fitness goals the right way. A few things you need to look into before you sign up is if your gym membership covers a personal trainer or if you’ll have to pay for one. The qualification of the personal trainers at your gym is also of prime importance. If you must go for a personal trainer, go for someone with an advanced certification/degree and someone who is in line with your goal.
  7. Cleanliness and Hygiene: It’s no secret that gyms are essentially breeding grounds for sweat, bacteria and germs. While somethings can’t be helped, you need to ensure that the gym you sign up for is regularly maintained with hygiene checks, have clean equipment, washrooms and changing rooms. An unclean environment is very off-putting and may prevent you from visiting the gym as frequently as you would have otherwise.
  8. Check Equipment: The first thing you should do when you’re taking a tour of a gym is to check the equipment. This check is essential to know if the gym has all the equipment you need and if they are in good shape. You won’t get anywhere with shoddy equipment. Also check for the make. A manufacturer that may produce excellent treadmills may not be ideal for rowing machines. Always go for a fine mix that exudes quality! The best gyms often have equipment from different manufacturers.
  9. Culture: Observing gym culture is a pivotal step in deciding whether or not the gym is for you! Do you prefer working out in the presence of the opposite sex? Does the intimidating presence of muscle-heads and heavy lifters bother you? Are you okay with loud, upbeat trance or do you prefer rock? All these questions need to be answered because if you are not comfortable or don’t like the atmosphere in the gym, you are less motivated to visit it regularly. Remember that comfort is of the utmost importance as it will ensure you renew your membership at the end of the year (if you make it :D).
  10. Does the Gym Meet Your Target?: It’s all about the goals! Does the gym have the right equipment, the right trainers, the right facilities and specialization to meet the goals you’ve set for yourself? If you want to lose weight, it makes more sense to choose a gym that specializes in weight loss. If you want to bulk up, go for a gym that specializes in bodybuilding. Don’t join a gym that doesn’t cater to your needs.
  11. Look For Reviews: Sometimes, an advertisement or a single tour cannot give you all the information you need. Take to social media, read reviews and form your opinion. The gym’s social media profile will give you an idea about the gym culture, while multiple reviews can give you a good idea about how the gym ranks in terms of quality and whether or not it meets your standards.
  12. Take a Trial: When all else fails, a little personal touch, like a week-long trial can help you know for sure if this gym is the one! A trial will help you gauge the equipment, the culture and all the other essentials that will become a part of your final decision. It will also help you understand if you’re getting your money’s worth.

In conclusion, choosing a gym is like picking a partner, you need to think it through to ensure that you don’t quit half way and are motivated to such an extent that you continue your membership and workout for a fit and healthy life! 6 Ways To Track & Achieve Your New Year Goals

6 ways to track and achieve your goals We are in the second week of the first month of 2025 and I am sure many of us have already made New Year Resolutions! The most common resolutions often revolve around “Losing weight and getting fit”, “Quitting smoking”, “Learning something new” or “Traveling to new places”.  The question is – are we working on them and what’s our game plan?

The desire to change something about yourself happens year after year. While intentions are good, most of us seldom end up fulfilling the resolutions we set. A recent article by Forbes magazine mentioned that only 8% of people actually achieve their New Year Goals.

Why Is It So Hard To Stick To New Year Goals?

Why do so many people fail at goal setting? What is it about those few who manage to get it right and achieve their goals?

There are many answers to the why’s and how’s. New Year goal setting is often seen as an opportunity to dish out a large bucket lists of all that we wanted to achieve but couldn’t throughout the year. It’s an attempt to tell ourselves that this year will definitely be better than the last.

The enthusiasm usually lasts through the first week of the New Year. Gradually, as days and months pass, interest in achieving these goals fades away. The human mind always finds excuses or loses interest midway, with little room for introspection. But fear not! Here are 6 ways to help you stay on track with your New Year goals.

6 Ways To Track & Achieve Your New Year Goals

  1. Create a Q&A: If you’ve decided to resolve a habit, prepare questions to ask yourself at timely intervals. This helps boost enthusiasm and keeps a check on progress. Analyze your life. Is there anything you want to change or improve? All answers start with questions, so be ready to create your list. Ask yourself: Who do I want to become? What can I improve? How can I change? Give yourself plenty of time—anywhere from a few hours to several days.
  2. The Devil Is In The Details: With your list ready, analyze it thoroughly to stick to your routine and track progress. For example, if your goal is to lose 10kg, track your weight monthly to measure how much progress you’ve made. Detailed data works as a roadmap to success.
  3. Gaze Into The Future: Create an emotional attachment to your New Year goals to make your journey enjoyable. Visualize how you’ll feel after achieving your goals. For instance, if your goal is to lose 10kg, imagine yourself at your ideal weight. This visualization motivates you to keep pushing forward. The more senses you engage, the better!
  4. Eating Elephants: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! Break your goals into smaller, manageable portions. For instance, if you need to run 10km, the thought might feel overwhelming. Instead, break it down into smaller goals, like running 1km 10 times. Achieving these smaller milestones makes the larger goal feel attainable.
  5. Reward Yourself: Rewards are a powerful motivator. Celebrate every milestone you achieve. For instance, after running 1km, reward yourself with a 100-meter walk. This break will recharge you for the next stretch. You can also set a grand reward, like a dream vacation, after achieving your primary goal.
  6. Socializing: When you commit publicly, you’re more likely to stay motivated. Share your goals on social media or with friends, and update them on your progress. The accountability will push you to stick to your routine and achieve your goals.

And that’s it! A simple 6 step process to help you achieve your New Year Goals! We hope this article inspires you to take charge and accomplish your resolutions. Do share your thoughts in the comments below. For more tips on goal setting and achieving them, check out Healthy Reads.

Holiday Health Tip: It’s All In The Chew!

Holiday Health Tip: It's All In The ChewIt’s precisely between this week and January 1st when people tend to put on most of their weight. There are two reasons for this – The crazy festive season filled with weddings and parties followed by Christmas, New Year’s Eve and the tendency to let loose during this time, with the justification that they’ll start fresh with ‘healthy new year resolutions’ in January.

  • What if I told you that you could enjoy this season and it wouldn’t impact your weight?
  • What if I told you snacking on a cookie or dessert occasionally wouldn’t effect your weight goals?
  • What if you could eat rice, roti (Indian flat bread), and bread at lunch and dinner without it impacting your weight or health?
  • What if you could enjoy this festive season, have loads of fun, eat your favorite foods and still maintain your health and weight?

The human body is a miracle, and we are living examples of this miracle. The way our brain and body function, blood flow, smell, feelings, emotions, the ability to recover from the deadliest of diseases and the ability of our cells to heal and repair – is nothing short of extraordinary. Every day, trillions of cells in our body work non-stop to fight off germs and bacteria that could otherwise make us very sick or even threaten our lives. This miracle is called immunity.

Our stomach produces enough acid to dissolve a razor blade. Such is the power of our digestive system. So what’s an ice-cream, chocolate bar, or cookie going to do when it enters our stomachs? Our body is made to digest even the toughest foods. Red meat, for instance, is hard to digest, but the body will break it down. Vegetarians don’t escape either—cellulose in vegetables is extremely difficult to break down, but the body eventually does the job. This is one reason vegetarians may experience more flatulence than non-vegetarians.

The body can break down meats, vegetables and desserts alike! The secret lies in the ‘chew’. Food tastes so good because you’re meant to enjoy it—slow down and savor it, not just rush it to your stomach.

How Does Chewing Thoroughly Help?

Chewing your food thoroughly is actually the first step in the complex process of digestion, and if you compromise this process, a common mistake, it can affect your overall health.

We have teeth not just to smile for a pretty picture but primarily to tear down and break up food into small bits. Saliva mixes with these small bits, further softening them.

Let’s dive into the basics:

Why Should You Chew Your Food Thoroughly?

When you chew, more saliva gets produced and your saliva contains enzymes that break down FATS and CARBS. Yes!!! Digestion starts in the MOUTH! By the time your food reaches your stomach, it’s already processed by enzymes, making it easier for your stomach to complete the digestion process.

  • You feel light
  • You feel full for a longer period of time.
  • You reduce flatulence, gas, indigestion and burping.
  • You learn to savor and enjoy the taste of your food.
  • Your body absorbs all the goodness of your food (vitamins, minerals) better.
  • You eat just the amount your body needs to maintain or achieve a healthy weight.

Imagine all the times you’ve gobbled down your food. You’re left with undigested chunks sitting in your stomach, causing gas, discomfort, and increasing the chances of food converting to fat.

Chew your food. Enjoy a dessert, but eat it slowly and savor it. Over time, you’ll learn not to overindulge. The more you chew your food, the cleaner you keep your intestines, stomach and colon because the body can cleanse itself more effectively when digestion happens correctly. Say goodbye to constipation, fatigue, and migraines.

Try This Exercise Today!

At your next meal, eat slowly. Take a spoonful of food, chew it several times, savor the flavor and taste, then swallow. Put your spoon down before taking the next bite.

You’ll find yourself getting fuller quickly and will naturally eat less. This habit helps you save calories over time. Eventually, you’ll serve yourself smaller portions—fewer calories mean better health, a longer life, and a healthy weight.

Take one serving spoon less at every meal, chew thoroughly, and eat slowly. You’ll find that this is enough. All these saved portions add up to a significant calorie reduction, helping you lose fat and feel healthier.

Most diseases are caused by overeating. Even if you think your portions are appropriate, eating too quickly can lead to overconsumption. Chewing thoroughly ensures you eat mindfully, eliminating the need for restrictive diets.

Meal times are sacred—they’re your personal moments to nourish and care for your body. Respect this time, as it’s essential for keeping you healthy and strong.

This is a lifestyle change and if you master it, you can enjoy all your favorite foods in moderation.

We hope this article helps you make that lifestyle change. For more tips like this, check out Healthy Reads or ask a GOQii Coach by subscribing for Personalised Health Coaching here.

12 Tips For a Healthy Christmas Week

Tips for Healthy Christmas WeekWant to avoid looking like Santa this festive season? You’re sailing on eating right and exercising daily, then boom — the holidays are here, just waiting to put a kink in your routine! Food is everywhere. Spare time is nowhere. Add this to the emotions and stress of the season, and you’re sure to have a recipe for disastrous weight gain. Here are some tips to help you stay on course of your health goals and celebrate a Healthy Christmas Week!

Tips For a Healthy Christmas Week

  1. Quality Over Quantity: Learn to avoid mindlessly accepting whatever is offered and instead hold out for the snack you value the most, and have just a few. If possible, opt for something baked instead of going for something deep-fried.
  2. Eat Slowly. Enjoy. Move away: If your weakness is salted nuts, you can easily eat double the prescribed quantity without noticing. While the fat in nuts is the healthy unsaturated type that doesn’t clog up your arteries, when it comes to your waistline, calories are still calories. Solution? Have a taste, eat it slowly and really enjoy it. “Try to chew your food well, concentrate on the flavour you’re experiencing and appreciate the goodness”. Then, move away from the source so you can’t keep eating more than your fill.
  3. Beware of the Buffet: People often look at a buffet as though it’s their last meal on earth. The smartest thing to do when surrounded by so much temptation is to walk around and eye everything first. Then go back and take a bit of what you really like. Before doing so, ask yourself, “Do I really want this?” Avoid the trap of thinking you have to get your money’s worth. If you don’t let it go to waste, it will end up around your waist.
  4. Watch Your Drinks: Alcohol plays a big part in Christmas weight gain. Sometimes, when surrounded by family and friends, you might not realize when 1 drink turns into 10. Your best bet is to put a cap on the amount of drinks you’ll have. Limit yourself to 3 drinks and space them out. In fact, if you can dilute your drink with water or ice, go for it! Opting to be the nominated driver might just give you the excuse to not drink at all!
  5. Keep Up Some Activity: Did you know that dancing can help you burn off calories. It’s a great way to shake a leg and shake off some extra calories as well. If dancing is not your thing, try brisk walking in the cool early morning breeze. Should work as a good start to the day. Don’t skip a post-dinner stroll with family, friends or your loved one. It can be magical!
  6. Make Sure You Log: Logging food, water intake and exercise can keep you accountable. Don’t look at it as a burden. This will help you stay on track and keep an account of what you’ve been eating and drinking. Be honest and log exactly what you eat!
  7. Earn Your Treats Before You Indulge: Treats aren’t really enjoyable if they leave you feeling guilty afterward. Eat healthy the day before heading out to a holiday party or work up a sweat before sitting down for a big holiday meal. This will help you feel less guilty and enjoy the movement.
  8. Listen to Your Tummy: The human body has an amazing ability to regulate food intake…if we actually listen to it! If you overindulge at a holiday feast, hold off on eating until you truly feel hungry again. Don’t eat just because there’s only one slice of pie left on the table, or because your Christmas Brunch begins at 10 AM. If you’re not hungry, sip on some tea or coffee while everyone else digs in, and make yourself a small plate later. It’ll still be there when your tummy grumbles!
  9. Just Say NO to Food Pushers: Food pushers are the people who seem to believe that their holiday celebration isn’t complete until you give in to their food offerings. You know them — the co-worker with a jar of candies, mom with her apple pie, or the friend who won’t let you leave without a plate of cookies. It’s OK to politely say, “No! Thank you!” It won’t hurt your relationship.
  10. Just Do It: Schedule your exercise time. Not only will you feel better about the indulgences that come with the holidays, but exercise will also will help relieve holiday stress. Take something out of your schedule if you need to, but not exercise. The endorphins from working out will only boost your holiday spirit!
  11. Share the Love: When going to a holiday gathering, bring a healthy dish that everyone can enjoy without feeling guilty.
  12. Snack before the party: Avoid going to holiday parties on an empty stomach. Eat a light and healthy snack, such as one with protein, to keep you feeling full before heading out. This will help you avoid overindulging later. Try a protein bar or some nuts and seeds.

We hope you try these tips and tricks to Level Up your holidays! Here’s to a happy and healthier you!
