Tips To Stay Hydrated During Lockdown

hydrated during lockdownWater is a super nutrient, easily available and the cheapest metabolic booster. Despite all its perks, it is the most neglected. Our body contains up to 60% of water, the heart and brain are composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water and you think having just a few glasses of water is enough to hydrate cells and for optimal functioning of these vital organs of our body? It is not. But before we get to how you can stay hydrated during lockdown, let’s look at the dehydration checklist.

Dehydration Checklist

  • Persistent headache
  • Dry skin and lips
  • Decreased/Increased thirst
  • Muscle cramps
  • Urine is dark yellow in colour

As there are limited resources available due to lockdown, we are blessed to get an adequate supply of water. Take advantage of this and rehydrate yourself now.

Top 5 Ways to Stay Hydrated During Lockdown

  1. Keep a water bottle handy: Always ensure to keep a reusable water bottle by your side at home, on your work desk or while performing any physical activity at home to replenish lost water.
  2. Intensify its taste: If normal water doesn’t work for you, you can add a twist of lemon, pinch of black salt, mint, chat masala and sip it. You can also add fruits or fennel seeds to your water and leave them overnight.
  3. Eat your water: Yes! You can eat your water by consuming foods with high water content like watermelon, cucumber, cabbage, oranges, spinach, strawberries, pineapple etc.
  4. Track your water intake: Set reminders for every one hour to encourage you to drink water. You can also log your water intake and set reminders via the GOQii app.
  5. Drink more of homemade fresh vegetable/fruit juice and soups. This will also add more nutritional benefits along with ensuring optimum water intake.

Benefits of Staying Hydrated

  • Water regulates our body’s temperature.
  • Water acts as natural appetite suppressant so it should be a go to drink for weight watchers.
  • When the body’s cells are dehydrated, the pituitary gland secretes vasopressin, a chemical that causes constriction of the blood vessels which increases blood pressure. So, drinking enough water can maintain and prevent us from hypertension.
  • Water acts as a lubricant and cushions our joints and spinal cord.
  • It removes toxins from our body and boosts energy. So grab a glass of water instead of sugar added juice after an exhausting schedule or day to boost energy levels.
  • Prevents constipation, reduces risk of cancer along with preventing kidney damage.

We hope this article convinces you to watch your water intake and stay hydrated during lockdown! For more lockdown tips, tune in to experts on GOQii Play.

Turn Everyday Chores Into Workouts

chores into workoutsSocial distancing can be really hard and not being able to burn all those calories while lying around at home is just unfair. Many of us don’t have any exercise equipment at home, so it’s all the more difficult to get a good workout. Well, a great way to kill two birds with one stone is to turn your daily chores into workouts.

If you haven’t seen it already, our GOQii Play coaches did a fine job of turning some of their chores into workouts. You can find those videos on our social media pages but for now, let’s see how we can turn household chores into workouts!

  1. Sweeping & Mopping: Tune in to music and turn up the heat! Grab that mop and start dance cleaning like some good ol’ cliché in a movie, yes? NO! Instead throw away that mop, get down on your fours with a washcloth and start scrubbing those tiles. Now, this is where the gut wrenching part comes in. So all done yet? Well, Congratulations! You have successfully burnt 145 calories per 15 minutes. And for sweeping you don’t need a vacuum cleaner! Use a broom for that extra burn!
  2. Cooking: Considering the fact  that you are on a preventive healthcare platform, I assume that you are not on any fast, pre-cooked or any kind of junk food. If you aren’t then it is good for you, especially in this situation it’s good for you 2X times! As working on a good home cooked meal can help you vaporise 75 calories including all the cutting, pounding, whisking, stirring etc.
  3. Dish Washing: Now that we have gone through the gut-wrenching part, let me introduce you to the back-bending section. Washing the dishes is a comparatively peaceful activity and needs to be done with a peaceful mind. Although you wouldn’t notice your stiff back until you are done with your chore. It is completely worth it when you finish your washing and crash on your sofa having burnt a total of 100-120 calories within 30 minutes. But don’t worry about your stiff back; it’s just your lazy muscles bent over the sink continuously.
  4. Laundry: Doing the laundry will never feel the same once you know of its health benefits. You can burn up to 78 calories in one hour by just loading and unloading the washing machine, including hanging up the clothes for drying, which equals to 50 sit-ups. Those who prefer washing clothes by hand, you’ll be surprised to know that you can burn anywhere between 100 to 220 calories in 30 minutes. Besides, your arms will get toned from all that scrubbing, rinsing and twirling. Squat while washing clothes, your quads and calves will get a good workout too.
  5. Ironing: With laundries in lockdown, you’re going to have to iron clothes yourself. There are some perks in it! Apart from burning 60 calories in  20 minutes, it tones your biceps. Also, note that standing rather than sitting while ironing your clothes will help you burn calories as well as wake those core muscles.

Now that you have read how you can turn your household chores into workouts, you’re all set for a healthy lockdown. You can help us a little by sharing these tips to your close ones and also by letting us know your thoughts in the comments below!

If you want an extra burn, you can also try these 5 workouts you can do at home.

Can Regular Exercise Prevent COVID-19?

exerciseApart from all the preventive measures we can take against COVID-19, should exercise be considered one of them? Can regular exercise actually protect us against COVID-19? Some might agree whereas others might not. In 1998, a large study showed that mild to moderate exercise performed about 4-5 times a week reduced the risk of dying during the Hong Kong flu outbreak. Could it be the same for COVID-19? Let’s find out!

Some Points to Consider

  1. Indulging in regular exercise, mild to moderate, for 30-40 minutes, for 4-5 days a week of your own choice whether it is aerobics, dancing, Zumba, push-ups, squats, Pilates, etc. lifts up mood by releasing dopamine and serotonin (happy hormones) which is critical when faced with the challenge of staying inside with limited resources.
  2. Exercising regularly can lower and keep your blood sugar level and blood pressure maintained, as people with these medical conditions are at high risk of getting infected with the coronavirus and other infections.
  3. Research shows that exercise can influence the body’s immune system, which is of utmost importance while fighting against infections and viruses.
  4. Exercise helps you sleep better and manage stress better, which can both be difficult when schedules are disrupted.
  5. It can reduce the risk of other chronic diseases like heart problems, kidney failure, cancer etc.

Bottom Line

Not much research has been done on COVID-19. At this point in time, it is best to follow WHO guidelines and take necessary measures such as eating right, exercising regularly, maintaining proper hygiene, managing stress and getting good quality sleep. Remember that whatever the disease may be, prevention is always better than cure.

Coconut Oil As An Immunity Booster

coconut oilGiven the current situation, the pandemic has gotten most of us to focus on our health. We are in fact taking a step towards eating clean and boosting our immunity to fight the virus. But, boosting immunity is not a temporary need, we should always focus on it. It is our shield against infections and disease. Let’s look at one food which helps us do this – Coconut Oil!

We use butter, ghee or refined oil while cooking our meals. These are not only fattening but they also make us lethargic and weaken our immune system. On the other hand, coconut oil is a well-known superfood which can be used as a supplement for cooking. It has Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFAs) which make it easier to digest. This fantastic oil has antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which help to keep us healthy and immune.

Why Coconut Oil to Boost Immunity?

Coconut oil is blessed with two special ingredients which makes it excellent for immunity. These are lauric acid and caprylic acid – both have antiviral properties. Both the acids are well known for fighting off yeast overgrowth (candida) along with bacterial infections. The composition of coconut oil consists of 50% lauric acid which is converted to monolaurin by the body – which is an antiviral agent that fights off a variety of pathogens and viruses. Though it hasn’t been found to be a proven cure for any disease, the antiviral properties in coconut oil have been through extensive research. Coconut oil also enhances our metabolism in addition to strengthening the immune system which will protect the body against atmospheric impurities.

How Do You Use It Effectively?

If you’re looking to boost your immunity naturally, simply use a teaspoon of coconut oil a day.

  1. As Cooking Oil: Use a teaspoon of coconut oil for cooking purposes which would help to curb fatigue and muscle pain with regular usage. You can stir it in coffee to make bulletproof coffee or you can even use it in any of your dishes like oatmeal, soups, smoothies, stews, or even make dessert and cook your veggies in it. If the taste is an issue, you can also use coconut butter which retains all the fiber naturally found in coconut, along with some of the oil.
  2. For Skincare: We absorb everything we put on our skin directly into the bloodstream, within minutes of contact. Try mixing it in your moisturizer as this shall help you build a shield against viruses and bacteria. This can help you protect your skin just like internal organs when it comes to fighting off immunity invaders. Women can also use it as make up removers to keep the skin glowing and healthy.

Remember, though coconut oil has many benefits, it is not a cure for any illness. One needs to have a balanced diet, exercise well, stay hydrated, sleep well and stay stress-free to live a healthy life. That being said, if you are already taking a healthy balanced diet and want an extra boost, try to add some superfoods in your diet, including coconut oil and garlic, which also has immunity-boosting properties. Avoid refined coconut oils and go with extra-virgin and organic for the best quality.
