Melons: More Than Just Summer Coolers

MelonsThe first fruit that comes to my mind when thinking of summer is Melons. I guess it is because they are quite juicy and nutritious! Melons are a part of the Gourd family that also includes cucumber, squash and pumpkins. There are different types of melons that we find locally. There are a hundred different varieties of them as well. The most common being Watermelon (red and yellow), Cantaloupes (muskmelons), Honeydew and Casaba.

Different Types of Melons & Their Benefits 

Melons are consumed as cool, refreshing, healthy snacks on hot summer days. But, it does not end here as they are also packed with nutrients that give us many health benefits. Let’s explore them!

  • Watermelon: Most commonly consumed, 92% of  this melon is water. They have significant amounts of Vitamins A, C and B6. It is also rich in antioxidants and amino acids. They have good levels of potassium but are low on sodium. Watermelons are known for their high Lycopene content. Lycopene is a phytonutrient found in fruits and vegetables. It is the red pigment that gives red color to tomatoes, guava, etc. Lycopene has been found to be a powerful antioxidant and is anti-inflammatory in nature. Studies have linked Lycopene to heart health, bone health and prostate cancer prevention.
  • Cantaloupes (Muskmelon): It’s a summer fruit that’s an excellent source of vitamin A which helps in maintaining healthy vision and prevents lung and oral cavity cancers. It also has good levels of antioxidant flavonoids like beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin. Antioxidants protect our body from free radical attacks, in turn, protecting our body from diseases like prostate, colon, endometrial, breast, lung and pancreatic cancers. Zea-xanthin protects the eyes from ARMD (Age related macular degeneration), a disease among the geriatric population. Cantaloupes also contain moderate amounts of Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins like niacin and pantothenic acid.
  • Honeydew: This fruit is a refreshing treat during hot summers. They are the sweetest among all the melons. Honeydew melons have 90% water content and this makes it a natural diuretic. While they may not be as rich in nutrients as cantaloupes but, they provide us with substantial amounts of vitamins and minerals. Honeydew melons are an excellent source of vitamin C, A and Potassium. They also contain good amounts of B-complex vitamins like B6, niacin and pantothenic acid. Minerals such as copper, calcium and manganese are also present.
  • Casaba: Casaba is a mild-sweet melon and tastes like cucumber. It is very low on sugar. Casaba melons are an excellent source of vitamin C. They also contain good amounts of vitamin B6. They have fairly good levels of potassium.

All the melons are high volume, low-calorie fruits that provide good satiety due to their fiber and water content, without adding on too many calories in the body. They are a healthy option to satisfy sugar cravings.

As they are mostly made up of water, they are really low on calories:

  • 1 cup of watermelon- 46 calories
  • 1 cup of cantaloupe- 53 calories
  • 1 cup of honeydew- 61 calories
  • 1 cup of casaba-  48 calories

There are many interesting ways in which melons can be consumed. They can be had on their own, cut into cubes or they can be consumed in the form of refreshing cold soups, in fruit yogurts, fruit salads and can be juiced as well. Watermelon seeds are seasoned and eaten as snacks. Watermelon rind is chopped and cooked as vegetable, marinated, pickled or candied.

But, one has to be careful with Melons as they grow in the ground and there are chances of them getting contaminated with waste water. Hence precautions must be taken before cutting them. They must be thoroughly cleansed from the outside and only then cut or else, there are high chances of contaminating the flesh of the melons with pathogens like Salmonella.

Should You Eat Eggs During Summer?

If you are wondering, should you have eggs during summer, then the answer is YES! It is absolutely fine to have eggs during summer, but moderation is the key. There are a lot of misconceptions on this topic and you must have definitely heard that eating eggs during summer may increase the body heat.

When you eat a protein-rich diet, your body will produce more heat to digest food and thus, burn more calories. So, having too many eggs can affect the digestive system. Although there are many theories about egg consumption. Let us look at some facts that can explain all the questions about eggs.

Nutrients in Eggs and their Benefits

  1. Good source of complete protein which helps in strong muscles and also for weight management by keeping you full for longer.
  2. Rich in iron content which increases energy and boosts your immunity.
  3. Vitamin D which helps in strengthening bones, prevents the risk of osteoporosis and helps in regulating your insulin levels.
  4. It promotes healthy eyesight. Antioxidants in eggs, lutein and zeaxanthin, helps in preventing cataract and macular degeneration.

  6. Rich in Vitamin E  which is good for skin and hair.
  7. Selenium helps prevent free radical damage, keeps your immune system healthy.
  8. Rich in Vitamin A, which you all know, is good for eye health.
  9. Rich in Choline, a nutrient for brain development and function.

So many nutrients in one food, no doubt why they are called ‘Superfood’. 

How Many Eggs Can You Eat During Summer?

For a healthy person, having a maximum of 2 eggs a day is absolutely fine. If you are a person who eats non-veg daily, then keep the intake to one per day. As said above, eating more eggs during summer can lead to stomach discomfort. People who are sensitive, and have digestive issues have to be careful and reduce it further, maybe an egg twice a week, as per their body capacity. So, have it in moderation, and get the most benefits from eggs during summer!

Refreshing Low Calorie & Nutritious Summer Drinks

There is nothing in the world that spells summer better than an afternoon spent lounging by the pool with an icy cold beverage in hand! Like me, how many of you have been craving something chilled throughout the day? While the idea of consuming a refreshing summer drink is plagued with thoughts of weight gain and the fact that most of these drinks are loaded with sugar, we thought of a few drinks that are low on calories and high on health. Try these refreshing summer drinks to beat the heat!

Coconut Water

Coconut Water is a beautifying beverage worth sipping all year long! It’s slightly sweet taste is particularly refreshing during summer. In addition to guzzling coconut water post-hot yoga flow or mixing it in to your A.M. smoothies, there are many other ways to enjoy it. Think on a popsicle stick, in a pudding and what not. Try adding some crushed mint leaves and lime juice to usual coconut water to make it more interesting.

Peppermint Teapeppermint tea recipe

Peppermint Tea is a delicious and relaxing beverage that has numerous health benefits. Whether you are preparing it from a tea bag or using fresh leaves, peppermint tea can be made in a matter of minutes. Introducing a batch of iced peppermint tea to a summer party is an invigorating experience! All you’ll need is:

  • 3-5 mint tea bags (or 30 fresh peppermint leaves)
  • 4 cups (32 ounces) water
  • Lemon or honey to taste (optional)

Watermelon Lime Juice Coolerwatermelon lime cooler recipe

This super refreshing Watermelon Lime Cooler is a great way to beat the heat on hot summer days. Best of all, it takes a few minutes to prepare.

What you need is:

  • 2 cups chilled Watermelon chunks
  • 1 tbsp Lime Juice
  • Ice Cubes
  • Few Basil or Mint Leaves
  • 2 cups Seltzer or Club Soda (240ml)

Blend Watermelon chunks and Lime juice in a blender. Serve chilled.

Cucumber Mint Squashcucumber mint squash recipe

Another tangy yet delicious drink loaded with detox properties. It is a perfect blend for a hot afternoon!

What you need is:

  • Mint leaves – 1 cup
  • Cucumber – 1/2 cup
  • Lemon juice – 1 1/2 tbsp
  • Water – 2 cup
  • Honey – 1 tbsp to taste
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp (to taste)

Blend everything in a blender. Add lemon juice after blending and mix it well. Filter the juice through a sieve and check the seasoning. Add if required. Serve chilled with ice cubes.

Strawberry Lemonadestrawberry lemonade recipe

There’s nothing that beats homemade lemonade, except adding strawberries to the mix!

What you need is:

  • 2 cups fresh strawberries
  • 3/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice, about 5 lemons
  • Chilled Water
  • 1 extra lemon, thinly sliced

Add strawberries and lemon juice to a blender and pulse until strawberries are liquid. Pour juice into a 1/2 gallon pitcher, add slices of lemon, and fill with chilled water. Don’t over fill pitcher with water, add just enough to make 1/2 gallon.

Top 5 Foods To Fight Wrinkles And Premature Aging

We all want healthy and glowing skin but do you know that your skin reflects what you eat? Healthy skin needs nutrients, a healthy diet, enough water and good sleep. When these aspects are balanced, it shows on our skin. Wrinkles are a sign of ageing. We can’t stop or avoid it but with healthy food and lifestyle, we can delay it. When it comes to premature aging or wrinkles, it happens due to Sun damage and loss of collagen and elastin. These two proteins take care of our skin and keep it healthy, young and firm. 

When UV rays hit our skin, it reduces the production of collagen and elastin. It increases the production of free radicals and premature aging. As we age, the skin starts losing its firmness and elasticity. Other factors that contribute to the process are pollution, smoking, stress, dehydration, lack of sleep and unhealthy food habits.

  1. Avocado: is a fruit with healthy fats. It has fiber and many nutrients like folate, magnesium, Potassium, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Niacin (Vitamin B3), Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6), Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Vitamin K. Vitamin E aids skin nourishment, reduces scars and fights free radicals. Avocado is high in the antioxidant glutathione, which helps the body to detoxify and keeps skin clear of acne and wrinkles.
  2. Berries: All the berries are extremely rich in antioxidants, are a good source of fiber, Vitamin c, Manganese, Vitamin K1, copper and folate. Those are rich in flavonoids, vitamins and polyphenol. So berries are perfect food to fight wrinkles and fine lines. Berries not only help in reducing wrinkles but also help in the regeneration of new skin cells. Add berries to your breakfast or morning smoothies.
  3. Buckwheat: It is gluten free, rich in fiber, Iron, provides B1, is a rich source of magnesium and calcium, folate, helps in heart health and controls blood sugar levels and also reduces the signs of premature aging. It has Bioflavonoid rutin which helps to maintain the production of collagen in the skin and encourage the body’s utilization of Vitamin C.
  4. Papaya: is rich in a variety of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals like Vitamin A, C, K and E, Calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and Vitamin B. These help to improve skin elasticity and minimize the fine lines and wrinkles. Papaya is rich in the enzyme papain and chymopapain which helps to reduce inflammation. It helps to reduce acne by removing dead skin cells, and remove damaged keratin which can build up on the skin and form small bumps.
  5. Sweet Potatoes: are rich in Vitamin A, B,C, D, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, thiamine, zinc. It has the antioxidant beta-carotene which is converted into Vitamin A and helps in restoring skin elasticity, prompts skin cell turnover, which means healthy glowing skin. The Vitamin C and E in it helps in protection of skin from free radicals and keeps complexion radiant. Both the Vitamins are crucial to keep skin healthy, glowing and supple. Vitamin C boosts collagen and promotes tightening of skin. 

Above are the few foods which help protect our skin from wrinkles and premature aging. In addition to including these foods to your diet, make sure that you have healthy fats, a variety of veggies and fruits, especially different colour veggies and fruits. Keep yourself well hydrated, do regular exercise, learn to manage stress and sleep well.

Reduce the consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee, preserved canned food and processed food. Our body does not have a voice but it talks to us through signs and symptoms, so pay attention to the health of the skin to be healthy and fit. With good food habits, healthy lifestyle, proper hydration, good sleep and stress management we can turn the clock on our skin to look 10 years younger.
