GHEE – For a healthier and beautiful life!

GHEE-For-a-healthier-and-beautiful-life

I am not sure how many of you understand what’s ghee? Its homemade pure butter made from milk, preferably cows

Reading the title of this article you must be thinking Have I lost it?. How can Ghee give you a healthy and beautiful life? But, it’s true it can.

Ever since my childhood days I have enjoyed my meals with Ghee and the trend continues even today. Having said that let me clarify that despite having Ghee I have always been lean. Many would attribute this to my genes. Well, no it’s not because of my genes but, largely due to the lifestyle and the food I eat. However, I have come to realise this only now, as a nutritionist. And, a major contributor to my lean and mean body is GHEE.

You would wonder how could that be possible? Believe me it’s no rocket science. Ghee has been an essential part of our cooking and food from ancient days. Our grandparents ate loads of Ghee and yet had no health issues or any kind of blockage in their heart etc. and the best part is they were healthy in every which way- physically and mentally.

Cut to the present times: When I as a nutritionist recommend people to have ghee with their food on a daily basis they are pretty shocked. Some even give me dirty looks as though I have said something that I shouldn’t be saying. Most are worried and ask questions such as how will ghee make me healthy? Ghee is so unhealthy, your cholesterol levels can go up, it can give us heart ailments like a blockage, and certainly it cannot reduce my weight and make me thin. These questions are natural because in the last one decade, we have been told to avoid foods full of saturated fats including ghee because they would cause heart attacks.

Well, you will be surprised to know that this is not true. In fact, research has indicated that the frequency of heart attacks, high cholesterol levels, joint pain, etc, occur more due to the exclusion of ghee or cutting down on it on a daily basis. A 2010 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition meta-analysis that looks at many studies and was done by researchers at Harvard concludes, the evidence linking saturated fats to a higher risk of heart attacks is not convincing.

Let me clarify your doubts and explain to you the properties of ghee, so you understand why it is good to have ghee for your health. Ghee comprises of short, medium and long chain fatty acids, both saturated and unsaturated. It also contains the most healthy and popular fats-Omega 3 and Omega 9 which are also known as essential fatty acids. Ghee also contains Vitamins A, D, E and K. Ghee when prepared from cow milk provides us with the highest natural sources of CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) which helps you to mobilize the stubborn fat in your body to energize you.

Ghee helps one in many ways. It is known to give longevity. Its elemental qualities balance the aging characteristics by enriching the living body.

For centuries now, Ghee has been used as a digestive and an elimination aid to rejuvenate one’s life. It gives one energy, sexual vitality, healthy skin and eyes. Can be used as a lubricant or joints and for alkali sing the blood.

The purity of ghee allows it to penetrate deep in the membrane (protective covering) of cells and nourish when it passes through it.

This is one of the reason that vitamins and minerals from food cooked in Ghee are considered much healthy. The assimilation of the nutrients in the body increases when suspended in a ghee matrix. Due to these inherent properties that ghee possesses, many herbal preparations use ghee as their main carrier oil.

SO all those who have kept ghee aside due to the fear of heart ailments and other health issues, get it back into your daily food routine and see the difference. Believe me you will only feel healthier and beautiful. Find high-quality Ghee at the GOQii Health Store here. Get children active and keep them healthy

GET CHILDREN ACTIVE AND KEEP THEM HEALTHY

Being physically fit has many benefits. This is not true of adults alone but also true for children. I remember as a child I would love to play in the outdoors. Every day my friends and I would spend at least an hour playing all kinds of games from football to cricket to various other physically taxing games. But, today its sad that we hardly see kids playing in the outdoors.

Children of today’s generation are born with technology gadgets around them and by the time they are 5-6 years of age they are so hooked to these gadgets such as Ipads or laptop or mobile phone etc. Most are gaming addicts and are interested in indoor and cyber games than playing in the outdoors.

But, sitting at home in front of the computer or playing on the Ipad or mobile phone is not good for children. These have a bad effect on the child’s physical strength, growth and fitness. Children should play in the outdoors and exert themselves in physical activities for at least an hour (60 minutes) daily. This is the minimum that a parent should see to it that the child follows. And, you’ll soon discover all the easy and enjoyable ways to help your child meet this regime. Encourage your child to participate in activities that are age-appropriate, enjoyable and offer variety!

Three types of physical activities are very important that every child must follow

1. Aerobic Activity
Aerobic activity should make up for most of your child’s 60 or more minutes of physical activity each day. This can include either moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, or vigorous-intensity activity, such as running. Be sure to include vigorous-intensity aerobic activity at least 3 days per week.

2. Muscle Strengthening
Include muscle strengthening activities, such as gymnastics or push-ups, at least 3 days a week as part of your child’s 60 or more minutes.

3. Bone Strengthening
Bone-strengthening activities include jumping rope or running, at least 3 days a week as part of your child’s 60 or more minutes activities in the outdoors.

Tips to help kids get active

** Encourage walking to school and getting active as a family

** Get them to cycle or run instead of getting a ride

** Ask them to walk the dog with you

** Have them carry the groceries from the market

** Encourage them to dance to their favourite music

** Replace computer and TV time with something active

** Build active opportunities into daily classroom routines and encourage students to join a school sport team

** Take kids to the playground or to the park to play

** Reduce screen time

This will help them to achieve the physical fitness and stay fit which will help them throughout their life.

We hope these tips on promoting physical activity and health among children prove valuable for both you and your child. If you found this information helpful, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. Why You Shouldn’t Throw Away The Egg Yolk

benefits of egg yolkEggs are the easiest and fastest to cook. Not to mention, they’re one of the most favorite meals! Almost all of us savor eggs in various preparations such as an omelette, boiled eggs, poached eggs, fried eggs, scrambled eggs, egg curry, egg sandwich, and many more.

Eggs basically have three parts- the outer shell, the inner 2 parts, namely the white albumin and the yolk. Among these three, the outer shell is what we discard and the inner white and yolk is what we consume. But, many of us are still not open to consuming egg yolks. We believe that it is very high in fat and cholesterol and hence, bad for health. But, what we fail to understand is, its immense nutritional power.

Nutritional Benefits Of The Egg Yolk

From the above table, it is evident that the egg yolk has higher amount of nutrients compared to the egg white. Egg yolks contain vitamins like A, D, E, K, B6, Folate, B12. Among these, vitamins A, D, E, K are found only in egg yolks and not in egg whites. Egg yolks are among those very few foods that naturally contain good vitamin D content.

Egg yolks have good amount of carotenoids; lutein and zeaxanthin. Carotenoids are colourful pigments that give the egg yolk its yellow colour. These carotenoids are known to act as antioxidants that protect different parts of the eyes from free radicals, thus preventing age-related macular degeneration to set in.

Egg yolks and egg whites, respectively, contain 13 types of minerals. These minerals include calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, sodium and selenium. The proportion of all these minerals is more in the egg yolks compared to the egg whites.

Nutrients in egg yolks, such as Choline, help in regulating cardiovascular function. Now, coming to the most dreaded feature of the egg yolk-fats and cholesterol! But, it’s not at all as bad as we think.

Egg yolks contain what we call as Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) in the form of DHA and Arachidonic acid. Omega 3 fatty acids like DHA are required in the body for the proper functioning of the brain and retina of the eyes. Omega 6 fatty acids like Arachidonic acid, are needed for healthy skin, hair, libido, reproduction, growth and response to injury. These Essential fats are also needed in the body for protecting the functioning of the nervous system.

The Cholesterol Issue

We confuse dietary cholesterol with cholesterol in the blood stream. In fact, high levels of LDL (the major carrier of cholesterol), can be the cause of certain heart diseases. Bottom line is that it is perfectly safe to have your favorite egg yolks without thinking about suffering a heart attack. It is found that, low-carbohydrate diet filled with saturated fats is actually more responsible for increasing blood cholesterol and causing cardiovascular problems. But, yes. Egg yolks are high on fats and cholesterol so, they are better had in a limit in daily diet. 1-2 whole eggs per day are the safe limit to have eggs on a daily basis, without worrying about heart diseases.

We hope that this article on egg yolks helps you enjoy your eggs whole, and any way you like it. For more on nutrition, check out Healthy Reads. Know your Artificial Sweetners

What comes to your mind when you talk about artificial sweeteners? Some say it has zero calories, some say it has lesser calories than table sugar. One day one gentleman came to me for his first consultation and while going through his diet recall, I realized he has been surviving on artificial sweeteners for almost 3 years and he had a complaint saying that despite cutting down on sugar, he is not losing weight!

Diabetic people also feel that their blood sugar levels would get under control if they stop eating normal sugar. People have a common misconception that if they stop consuming sugar, they would lose weight. But, as a nutritionist, I can guarantee that this is not possible. An individual’s lifestyle, BMR, daily activity, stress all of these factors contribute to the weight loss process.

If you ask me, I would say that sweeteners are not safe in the long run. Artificial sweetener is a substitute for refined sugar which has very few calories.

‘Food and Drug Administration’ regulations permit any food product that has 5 or fewer calories per serving to be labelled as containing “zero″ calories. Personally, being a nutritionist, I feel that anything which is artificial acts as a foreign substance which can have adverse effects on the body in the long run. In fact, there are many scientific studies which have proven that using sweeteners especially aspartame leads to neurological disorders like Alzheimer, dizziness, depression in the long term which can be fatal.

Sweeteners however should be used in moderation. If consumed on a daily basis it can get addictive. Today artificial sweeteners and other sugar substitutes are found in a variety of food and beverages marketed as “sugar-free” or “diet,” including soft drinks, chewing gum, jellies, baked goods, candy, fruit juice, and ice cream and yogurt misleading the consumers because even though the label on the pack would show zero calories, it would have good amount of carbohydrates and free saturated fats which is not good for the body.

Today, people easily get influenced by these gimmicks without knowing the pros and cons of the product. Just because a well-known celebrity is endorsing the product it does not mean you blindly go for it. It is in no way a ‘wow factor’ nor is it very healthy. There are many leading companies which promote their products as being the healthiest because it has no calories!! There are several types of artificial sweeteners:

  • Acesulfame- K
  • Aspartame
  • Sucralose
  • Saccharin
  • Stevia

Acesulfame K: Acesulfame K, also known as acesulfame potassium or ace K, is approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. It is marketed under the brand name of Sunett, Sweet One, and Sweet & Safe. It is commercially used in hard and soft candies, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, chewing gums, baked goods.

Aspartame: Aspartame is approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. Aspartame is marketed under the NutraSweet, Equal and Sugar Twin brands. It is commercially used in baked goods and pre-dessert mixes.

Sucralose: Sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar. It is marketed under the brand name of Splenda. It is also used in soft drinks, candies, baked goods, and ice creams

Saccharin: Saccharin is 200-700 times sweeter than sugar. It is marketed under the brand name of sweet n low, nectar sweet, sweet twin.

Stevia: Stevia is a new product gaining importance in today’s world. It is a natural-sourced sweetener. (it originates from Stevia leaves). It is 400 times sweeter than sugar. Stevia can be found in thousands of food and beverage products around the world, including teas, soft drinks, juices, waters, flavoured milk, yoghurts, baked goods, cereals, salad dressings, sauces, confectionaries, and as a tabletop sweetener.

To sum it up, use Artificial Sweeteners in moderation. As it is rightly said, moderation is the key. Rather choose for healthier ones like Honey, Jaggery watching out the portion size for each!!
