Lifestyle Diseases On The Rise In India | IndiaFit Report 2022 – 2023

Lifestyle diseases on the rise

Lifestyle diseases are chronic health conditions that are caused by the way people live their lives. These illnesses develop over time and are largely caused due to leading an unhealthy lifestyle which consists of a poor diet, lack of exercise, etc. Diabetes, High Cholesterol , High Blood Pressure and Thyroid disorders  are the four most common lifestyle problems among people in 2022 according to the IndiaFit Report 2022 – 2023.

The World Health Organization estimates that these lifestyle diseases are responsible for 80% of all deaths worldwide. They are the leading cause of death in the developed world, and the numbers are increasing. Poor lifestyle choices are the main reason for these lifestyle illnesses which in turn result in the majority of these deaths.

High Blood Pressure Is Still A Major Lifestyle Concern

The report indicates that high blood pressure is still a cause for concern as it is still the most common ailment, which affects 24% of those polled.  This might be attributed to factors such as unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity and stress. Additionally, there is a lack of awareness regarding the risk factors associated with high blood pressure and the importance of regular monitoring.

High Cholesterol is in second place affecting 18% of the population. This might be due to poor eating habits, lack of exercise, being overweight, smoking, consuming alcohol or family history.

Diabetes is the third most common disease, affecting 17% of the population. Diabetes can be caused by excess weight, inactivity, sedentary lifestyle, junk food consumption, lack of sleep or a family history of the disease. When compared to its rivals, Thyroid disorders have a lower proportion of 7%. Iodine deficiency or any autoimmune illness might cause this sickness.

Lifestyle Diseases On The Rise

The GOQii IndiaFit Report 2022 – 2023 indicates that Lifestyle Illnesses over the last 3 years are consistently on the rise. The percentage of people with high blood pressure has increased from 23% in 2020 to 24% in 2022. High Blood Pressure still tops the chart.

Lifestyle diseases on the rise

High Cholesterol is another silent killer which has seen an increase. People with high cholesterol have increased from 16% in 2020 to 18% in 2022. People with Diabetes have increased from 15% in 2020 to 17% in 2022. The report indicates that 7% of people are suffering from Thyroid-related issues, out of which women are more affected by it than men. This has not changed over the years.

Some Good Carbohydrates For Diabetics

good carbohydratesAlthough it’s a complicated disorder, diabetes can be managed and, in some cases, even reversed. Choosing healthy foods and drinks, in essence, managing nutrition, is the key to manage diabetes. Carbohydrates are among the foods that we start avoiding in case we see high sugar levels. We start considering carbs as an enemy, which is definitely not the case.

Ideally, when we eat carbohydrates, the body converts it into glucose which further increases sugar levels. It is due to this that we consider avoiding carbohydrates. They are an integral part of a healthy diet and before we begin to avoid them, we need to understand them.

There are 2 types of Carbohydrates

  • Simple carbs: which are easily broken down in the body, they lead to a sudden increase in the sugar levels.
  • Complex carbs: which are absorbed slowly in the body and due to this, there isn’t a sudden increase in the sugar levels.

So complete elimination of carbohydrates is not recommended, rather we can shift to a diet which provides a good amount of complex carbs. Starch and fibers are the types of complex carbs, and as we all know, there are lots of health benefits of including fibers in the diet.

Good Carbs You Can Include

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Whole Grain products
  • Beans
  • Pulses
  • Nuts

How To Incorporate Complex Carbs In Your Diet

  1. Replace wheat rotis (flat breads) with multigrain or oats rotis (flat breads)
  2. Replace the white rice with brown rice
  3. You can also replace the brown rice with Dalia (Bulgar Wheat) or Quinoa, if or whenever possible
  4. Include more vegetables in your meals
  5. Have at least 1 portion of fruits a day – preferably apple, papaya, guava, pears, cherries or berries
  6. Include salads in at least 1 meal a day
  7. Add boiled beans, sprouts, boiled pulses, nuts or mixed seeds to the salads

With these tips, do remember that it is not just reducing the carbs but an overall lifestyle modification that is really important. With the diet, it is really important to follow an exercise routine, to manage stress and to cut down any unwanted habits of smoking or alcohol. If you are a diabetic and have stopped having carbs, do start including complex carbs in a limited portion in your daily routines.

Please note that before you begin with any of the aforementioned foods, kindly check with your doctor, dietitian or nutritionist. We hope this article on Good Carbohydrates for Diabetics helps you – do share it with your friends and family. Stroke: Warning Signs, Causes & Prevention

stroke“Doctor please help! Half of my body does not move anymore” came a slurry cry from a helpless Vinod Agrawal, a businessman. His wife stood next to him in the emergency department weeping profusely and their 16 year old son watched his parents helplessly.

When examined thoroughly, Agrawal was diagnosed with STROKE. Thanks to the lifestyles that most people lead these days, this is a common site in hospitals.

A stroke strikes when the blood supply to the brain is affected either due to blockage leading to ischemia or rupturing of vessels. Due to this the brain does not receive enough oxygen and nutrition causing cell death, which is the ideal condition for stroke.

How Does a Stroke Happen?

  1. Ischemia: Occurs due to narrowing or blockage of blood vessels due to blood clots formed either in arteries connecting brains or other vessels or due to dislodgment of fatty deposits called plaques (atherosclerosis).
  2. Haemorrhagic: Bursting or leaking of blood vessels which compresses the brain cells. This leakage of blood puts pressure on brain cells which is accumulated in brain due to trauma, hypertension or some blood thinning medication.
  3. TIA – Transient Ischemic Attack (Mini Stoke): Brief episodes of stroke which is self-limiting. Blood flow is briefly interrupted and these are the warning signs of future stroke. It is like an alarm from the body.

Common Presentation of Stroke

  • Weakness or tingling in half or full body depending on the involved artery
  • Deviation of face with difficulty in speech and closure of one eye
  • Mental Confusion, severe headache, loss of power in the limbs

When any of the above symptoms are seen, the patient must be rushed to the hospital.

Stroke

After thoroughly understanding the history and general examination, few specific tests and examination like CT scan are done to find out the cause of the stroke. The treatment is very complicated and management is done in ICU and Neuro-physician may be required.

As there are two major causes of stroke – ischemia and haemorrhage – both have different management.

  • If ischemic– the focus is to restore adequate blood flow-clot is broken or dissolved.
  • If haemorrhagic – stop bleeding or leakage of blood, to reduce the pressure of brain cells. Surgical intervention may be required if there is any arterial malformation or rupture of vessels.

Rehabilitation activities like physiotherapy, speech therapy, etc. help to restore physical activities gradually.

Prevent It!

All the above symptoms and complications can be prevented if a healthy lifestyle is followed.

  • Eat a healthy – diet which includes fresh fruits, vegetables, avoiding processed meat and avoid junk food.
  • Yoga, especially Pranayama, ensures that every cell of the body receives adequate oxygen for appropriate functioning. Pranayama rejuvenates the body cells which ensures the ideal functioning of the body.
  • Stress kills! Accept what life offers happily and keep working towards your goal without killing yourself.
  • Remember Smoking Kills – all advertisements shown are true. STOP smoking.
  • Avoid alcohol, if you do consume it, make it minimal.
  • If you are hypertensive, keep an absolute check on blood pressure and follow all dietary and physical discipline so that blood pressure is controlled.
  • If one is diabetic, regular check of sugar is important.

Listen to your body. It always warns you before the disease sets in.

Stroke is an acute emergency but the root cause lies in chronic habits and patterns of life. Every moment, even at this moment of reading the blog, we can choose health or disease. Either you choose to pick up alarming signals of body and employ the necessary preventive measures to live a healthy life or be undisciplined and get hospitalized. THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

We hope this article helps you. For more on stroke and prevention, check out Healthy Reads or ask a GOQii Coach for guidance by subscribing for Personalised Health Coaching here.

GOQii to Introduce Reiki Booster Pills!

Reiki PillsThe Reiki Revolution has taken the world by a storm and everyone is turning to this form of alternative medicine. Although some people disagree and term it as pseudoscience, there is enough evidence to conclude that universal energy is real and can be harnessed to heal a person from emotional and physical ailments.

What is Reiki?

Developed by Mikao Usui in 1922, Reiki is etymologically derived from the Japanese words rei which means soul or spirit, and ki which means vital energy. Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing through which the universal energy is transferred through the palms of a master to the patient in order to encourage physical, emotional or mental healing.

How Do Reiki Pills Work?

With no master or practitioner to guide or heal you without touch, how exactly do these pills help you harness energy from the universe? After thorough research on the effects of certain elements on the brain and a lot of trials and tribulations later, we found that when certain natural compounds are introduced in the human body, they create a reaction that enables your body to directly harness energy from the universe.

Since ancient times, well-known Rishis and Gurus from India have meditated in nature and have attained profound wisdom and nirvana. Why so? Why is it that in today’s times, with all our technology, we find it so difficult to find the peace or wisdom they did? We believe that the environment they were in had a crucial role to play in their enlightenment. The answer was in nature itself!

After much research, we were able to detect the elements and their effects on different brainwaves, namely, Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta and Gamma. We found that certain elements can trigger a reaction and influence these brainwaves to form a higher connection with universal energy for a certain period of time. This led to improved motor skills, reflexes and a burst of energy that lasted throughout the day. Other changes included an increase in focus, attention to detail, and the ability to learn new skills quickly.

Apart from the aforementioned positive outcomes, there were no notable side-effects on brain function or the body. With all the universal energy pouring directly into you, the possibilities are endless! You could heal from all your physical ailments. By connecting with a higher conscience, you need not worry about mental or emotional illnesses. You might even be able to live longer!

Thanks to the positive results of our testing, we will be launching the one-of-a-kind, never-seen-before ‘Reiki Booster’ on the GOQii Health Store soon. You can purchase the same for a huge discount with GOQii Cash. Stay tuned to the app, use this miracle product and make yourself healthier with the power of Reiki!
