5 Foods That Will Help You Avoid Acidity

avoid acidityDay in and day out, most of us experience acidity due to an erratic lifestyle, wrong postures, no time to have meals, eating junk or spicy food outside. Acidity is also known as heartburn. Do you know why? Because it actually feels like your chest is on fire! Acidity can be a serious mood killer in any circumstance and it can happen to anybody irrespective of age. So exactly can you avoid acidity? Before we answer that, let’s look at some common triggers:

  • Staying on empty stomach for too long
  • Having too many cups of tea or coffee a day
  • Spicy street food
  • Deep fried oily food
  • Junk food consumption containing refined flour
  • Frequent restaurant visits

What Can You Do To Avoid Acidity?

To avoid acidity, you need to first avoid the above triggers. You can also try these 5 foods below which help in relieving acidity.

  1. Bananas: This fruit is easily available throughout the year. Its high fiber content strengthens the digestive system. Pectin, found in bananas, moves the residues through the digestive tract which actually helps one avoid acidity.
  2. Ginger: is a natural treatment for acidity due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger juice can be extracted and 2-3 drops or 1tsp of ginger juice can be consumed as ginger shot post meals to relieve acidity. Another way to consume ginger is by making ginger tea.
  3. Yogurt: also has a soothing effect on our digestive system as it helps coating the lining of the digestive tract. Also it contains probiotics which are healthy gut bacteria that aid digestion. Consuming curd/yogurt is a proven remedy for acid reflux.
  4. Aloe Vera: not only soothes the skin but our gut as well. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it helps you avoid acidity. Drink 5-10ml of aloe vera juice everyday on an empty stomach for good results.
  5. Fennel Seeds (Saunf): are loaded with anti-inflammatory properties and they also aid good digestion, reducing the symptoms of acidity easily. Consume about 1tsp of fennel seeds post meals. It will not only improve digestion, but also help you fight against acidity. It works great as a good mouth freshener too.

So keep these easily available foods ready with you to avoid acidity. Do remember to avoid the triggers as well, as prevention is always better than cure. We hope this article helps you. If you’re suffering from acidity, try them out and let us know your experience in the comments below.

Devesh Srivastava Lowers His HbA1c from 6.7 to 5.8 With GOQii

Devesh SrivastavaHave you ever suffered from a cold or fever and thought to yourself that you can manage this? In fact, there’s a good chance that with some medication and rest, the symptoms of a cold or fever have subsided. But, when you deal with issues such as Diabetes and Hypertension, trying to manage the issue on your own might not be such a good idea. Our Player Devesh Srivastava came to realize that personalized health coaching is the best way forward!

Life Before Joining GOQii

Devesh Srivastava is a 52 year old investment banker residing in the city of Ahmedabad. He was always keen on joining an app-based fitness solution. Back in 2014, he heard our Founder & CEO Vishal Gondal speak at an event. He says, “What he said connected well with me and I was looking forward to joining something like GOQii, but it never happened”.

While he did have a normal routine, he wanted someone to look over him and guide him towards a healthy lifestyle. He says, “Before the pandemic, things were manageable but during the pandemic, the situation was difficult as you were at home the whole time. Earlier I would walk with my friends and colleagues but then it all stopped during the lockdown. I did not have a proper routine and that created a weight issue”.

During this time, Devesh Srivastava tried creating his own regime and restricted his diet to reduce weight. “I’ve seen other people reduce weight by doing their own things. So I decided to try as well. But, my sugar levels were not reducing,” he said. He was also on Diabetes and Hypertension medication.

Joining GOQii and Making Lifestyle Changes

After several trials and errors of trying to manage his health by himself, Devesh Srivastava said that he needed someone to keep a watch on his health and guide him properly. So, he came to the decision to subscribe for GOQii’s Personalised Health Coaching in November 2021.

“The coach’s guidance worked well for me. She made simple and doable changes,” he says. Some of these changes included:

  • Have soaked Methi seeds in the morning
  • Increase salad portion before lunch and consume fruits as mid-meal snacks
  • Eat healthy evening snacks which include dry fruits, fruits or roasted snacks.
  • Eating an early dinner
  • Reduce carbs from dinner and replace them with fiber and protein
  • Drink green tea in the evening
  • Begin the day with Surya Namaskar
  • Increase steps count gradually

Apart from the above changes, his GOQii Coach kept a close watch on his food consumption, water intake, sleep and exercise, making timely corrections as per requirements.

What Changes Did Devesh Srivastava Experience?

Within 4 months, Devesh could experience changes in his health. As his journey continued, within 7 months he was able to lose approximately 7kg. From 80kg, he came down to 74.6kg. His waist size had reduced from 36 inches to 34 inches.

In his current report, he found that his blood sugar and cholesterol levels had lowered down. “With Coaching, I feel better,” he says. “My stress levels are better managed. I am also able to sleep well for at least 6.5 hours daily,” he added.

What Does Coach Sakshi Agarwal Have To Say About Her Player?

When he came onboard, he was overweight. His height is 170cm and weight was 80kg. His waist size was 36 inches and his BMI was 27.7. He was suffering from Diabetes and High Blood Pressure. His Triglyceride was also high at about 180.

Fortunately, Devesh Srivastava is a very sincere player and was always enthusiastic about taking on all the challenges I threw at him. He tried his absolute best to complete them. Within 4 months, he has made remarkable progress.

Apart from reducing his weight and waist size, his blood sugar and cholesterol levels have also reduced. His HbA1c reduced from 6.7 to 5.8. His Triglyceride levels reduced from 180 to 148. His Blood Pressure reduced from 97fbs – 135pp to 85fbs – 119pp.

He is quite happy with these transformations and I appreciate his positive response to my suggestions as well as his  dedicated approach to improving his lifestyle!

Easy and Effective Tabata Routine For Beginners

effective tabata routineWhen it comes to getting active and losing weight, people generally get confused about where to start. So, let’s look at this effective Tabata routine which is simple and easy. TABATA (also called Tabata protocol) is a type of HIIT (high intensity interval training). It originated when a Japanese Scientist Dr. Izumi Tabata and his team from The National Institute of Fitness and Sports at Kagoshima, Japan were working on the fact that shorter high intensity workouts followed by a shorter period of rest can impact the body better rather than longer periods of continuous workout.

The structure of program is like:

  • Exercise hard for 20 seconds
  • Rest for 10 seconds
  • Complete 8 rounds

A combination of any exercise can be used in Tabata. It targets a wider range of muscles and helps in burning fat during and after workouts.

Three major health benefits of this Effective Tabata routine are:

  1. Helps in burning more fat in a shorter period of time
  2. Helps in increasing endurance
  3. As it is high intensity training, it needs to be focused & attentive, thus, increases efficiency.

Before You Begin, Keep in Mind:

  • A beginner has to first check his/her flexibility, efficiency and endurance before picking up the sets of exercises
  • Make sure to complete a dynamic warm up before you begin this easy and effective Tabata routine.
  • You can choose a group of 3-4 exercises for a week and then add some other exercises one by one depending upon your stamina.
  • Don’t do exercises in a hurry. Rather do it in proper posture and manner.
  • Always keep a stopwatch with you.

Exercise To Include In Your Tabata Routine

There are basic 10 exercises which you can include in your Tabata protocol when you are planning to start. These are:

  1. Burpees: Toughest among all exercises and increases endurance, strength & power. It is most effective but for a beginner can be placed at last.
  2. Lunges: Can be included in beginners protocol & difficulty level can be increased once you are comfortable in traditional lunges.
  3. Jump Rope: It is an effective and portable form of exercise and can be included in the beginners list.
  4. Squat Jack: It combines two bodyweight exercises which are squats and jumping jacks. Can be safely included in the list.
  5. Tabata Sprints: It starts with 20 seconds of sprints followed by 10 seconds of walking, jogging or rest.
  6. Push Ups: One of the most simple and familiar exercises which can be included in the list.
  7. Super man: This will strengthen the back and core muscles and can be included in the list.
  8. Plank jack: These are simple. The difficulty level can be increased at one’s comfort ability.
  9. Mountain Climbers: Very effective for legs and most suitable for beginners.
  10. Windshield Wipers: Easy to do and can be included in the list and variations can be done later.

From the list above, you can choose any 4-5 exercises and start practicing according to the Tabata protocol and always start with high energy and not in a hurry.

Stress and You: A Comprehensive Guide to Managing Life’s Challenges-Part-1

India is still stressedPicture yourself about to deliver a crucial presentation at work. Standing before your colleagues, you feel your heart racing, your hands slightly sweaty, and your mind zeroing in on every word you’re about to say. That surge you feel? It’s stress at work—a natural response gearing you up to perform at your best. In this moment, stress isn’t a barrier; it’s a boost, keeping you sharp, focused, and ready to engage.

Stress plays a crucial role in many areas of our lives, whether it’s the drive to excel in an exam, perform well in a major game, or stay alert in a risky situation. However, like a double-edged sword, while stress can provide a helpful boost, excessive stress can start to hold us back. By understanding what stress is and how it impacts us, we can learn to harness it when it’s useful and manage it when it starts to feel overwhelming.

Let us understand what is Stress?

Stress is the body’s natural reaction to any demand or threat. When we sense danger—whether it’s real or perceived—the body triggers an automatic “stress response” designed to protect us, keeping us focused, energized, and alert. In emergencies, stress can even be life-saving, providing extra strength and heightened awareness to face the challenge.

However, stress isn’t always a negative force. It can serve as a motivator, helping us rise to challenges. For example, stress can keep us sharp during a work presentation, boost our focus in a game, or push us to study for an exam rather than indulge in distractions. In this way, stress can empower us to exceed our limits and achieve our goals. But when stress becomes chronic, it can start to affect our health, making it essential to manage it well.

What happens when you’re stressed?

When you experience stress, your nervous system releases a surge of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol, priming your body for action. Your heart beats faster, muscles tense, blood pressure rises, breathing quickens, and your senses sharpen. However, after a certain point, stress ceases to be helpful and can begin to harm your health, mood, productivity, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Common symptoms of stress-

Cognitive symptoms

  1. Memory problems- Inability to concentrate
  2. Constant worrying
  3. Mood swings, irritability, anger

Physical symptoms

  1. Chest pain, rapid heart rate
  2. Frequent colds or flu
  3. Aches and pains
  4. Dark circles, skin pigmentation

Behavioral symptoms

  1. Eating more or less
  2. Sleeping too much or too little
  1. Withdrawing from others
  2. Procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities
  3. consuming alcohol, smoking, or drugs to relax, Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting)

Health Problems Related to Stress:

Diabetes

Stress can worsen diabetes in two ways. Hormones like cortisol, cortisone, and hydrocortisone play a major role in the body’s response to stress. Under the influence of cortisol, blood sugar levels are maintained and can even rise during stressful times. These hormones are responsible for converting glycogen into glucose. Any type of stress increases cortisol levels in the blood. Additionally, stress raises the likelihood of unhealthy behaviours, such as poor eating habits and excessive drinking.

Hypertension and Heart Disease

People who are stressed have a higher risk of high blood pressure and heart problems. Stress can directly increase heart rate and blood flow, causing the release of cholesterol and triglycerides into the bloodstream. It’s also possible that stress is linked to other issues—like an increased likelihood of smoking or obesity—that indirectly elevate heart risks.

Things to do to effectively manage stress:

  1. Eat a well-balanced diet, food rich in important vitamins and minerals that help in managing stress (we will discuss the food helping in managing stress in PART 2)
  2. Yoga is a popular physical and mental health enhancer
  3. Exercise can be a great stress reliever. It changes one’s outlook and the day will seem far less tense.
  4. Massage is a form of enforced physical relaxation and mental relaxation to reduce stress.
  5. Being assertive. Assertive people tend to have less conflicts, and are understanding.
  6. Cultivate the power of patience, it will do you a lot of good.
  7. Keep yourself occupied so that your mind doesn’t think of those matter that hurt you. (example if watching news that make you sad .. try not to watch it and watch something funny and light.).
  8. Read books that motivate you.
  9. Try doing things that make you happy. For instance playing your favourite sport, going on a long drive, hanging out with friends or calling them home.

This concludes Part 1 of our comprehensive guide to stress management. We hope this article provided valuable insights into understanding and managing stress effectively. Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll delve into the role of nutrition and advanced strategies in stress management.
