Home Remedies For Women’s Health Issues

Women's Health IssuesBalancing your work and your personal life as a working woman can be quite tiresome especially when piled up over women’s health issues such as menstrual problems and PCOS.

As per the GOQii Women’s Health Matters survey, we found that 51% of women in India continue to struggle with ongoing health issues such as menstrual irregularities, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hypothyroidism, UTI and fibroids, diabetes, and infertility. Around 63.3% of women suffer irregular periods or infrequent menstrual cycles due to PCOS.

Prolonged psychological stress can lead to the release of excessive prolactin and cortisol hormones which can interfere with natural estrogen-progesterone cycle – which is responsible for regulating periods.

Balancing Hormones For Women’s Health Issues

Some issues can be solved by balancing the hormones progesterone and estrogen. This can be done through seed cycling, walking, weight management, cutting down on refined products and managing stress. In terms of diet, women can focus on Vitamin E rich foods, raw and sprouted seeds, nuts and salads. Homemade cottage cheese, fresh raw vegetable juice and cold pressed coconut oil also help! Vitamin C, B6 and pantothenic acid rich foods have properties of stimulating the body’s production of estrogen.

Remedies To Reduce Menstrual Pain

  1. A Gentle Massage: over the abdomen, back, legs and feet for 15-20 minutes will ease the pain and relax the body. You can use oils like sesame, mustard and coconut for better results.
  2. Hot Fermentation: Applying heat to the abdomen and lower back is also a very effective remedy to reduce the pain and cramps. You can use a hot bottle, heating pad, warm towel or even have a warm bath.
  3. Good Sleep: for 7-8 hours (undisturbed) helps to relax your body and mind, both.
  4. Natural Herbs: like fennel seeds, chamomile tea, cinnamon and ginger have antiinflammatory and antispasmodic properties, that are very beneficial in reducing the menstrual pain.
  5. Avoid Certain Food Items: that increase the uneasiness by inducing gas and bloating issues, for instance, sugary soda drinks, alcohol, caffeine, salty foods, fried food, junk food items, etc.
  6. Caffeine free teas like ginger tea, lemon tea, lavender tea, decaffeinated green tea can help in relieving pain associated with menstrual cramps.

Remedies For Bloating and Heavy Period Flow

  1. Jaggery and carom seeds drink: Boil 1 glass water and add ½ tsp carom seeds followed by 2 tsp jaggery powder. Boil till jaggery dissolves, strain and drink. This drink can instantly relax tensed uterus muscles and provide relief from pain and bloating associated with periods.
  2. Soaked methi seed water: Soak some methi seeds overnight, warm the water in the morning and drink on an empty stomach. The major bioactive compounds ‘polyphenols’ in fenugreek seeds are believed to help reduce abdominal pain.
  3. Turmeric and nutmeg milk: Adding a ½ tsp of turmeric and a pinch of nutmeg in warm milk and drinking this before bed helps in menstrual pains. This combination of 2 spices acts as an antispasmodic agent.

Certain Yoga poses to ease menstrual pain include:

  • Child’s pose or Balasana
  • Knees to chest pose or Apanasana
  • Camel pose or Ustrasana
  • Forward fold or Padangusthasana
  • Resting corpse pose or Shavasana

Ways To Maintain Feminine Hygiene

  • Keep the vagina clean by washing regularly with a gentle, mild soap and warm
    water
  • Never use scented soaps and feminine products or douche. Also avoid
    feminine sprays and bubble baths
  • After going to the bathroom, always wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria from getting into the vagina and causing an infection
  • Wear 100% cotton underpants, and avoid overly tight clothing

Tips To Reduce Bloating During Pregnancy

  • Eat small proportions: Splitting your food into six small meals rather than three heavy meals will avoid overloading your digestive system.
  • Eat slowly to improve the digestion. Take a few deep breaths before and during the meal to relax. Also, do not eat when stressed
  • Consume fiber rich foods like carrots, whole wheat toast, oatmeal, apples, and pears. These are some of the best sources of fiber.
  • Foods such as onions, cabbage, broccoli, and beans are gas-inducing. Fried foods may not release gas in the stomach, but they can slow down your digestion process, leading to bloating. Hence, avoiding fried and gas inducing food is important.
  • Carbonated beverages and sweetened fruit juices contain high levels of fructose corn syrup, which contributes to bloating. Choose fresh fruit juices over carbonated beverages.
  • Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. Start your day with a glass of water and then keep sipping water throughout the day. Include fresh fruit juices in your diet, water helps in flushing out toxins from your body. Also, helps in preventing bloating and constipation.

Remedies For Increased White Vaginal Discharge

White discharge is caused mainly due to hormonal imbalance, increased secretion of estrogen, improper hygiene habits, loss of iron, and sometimes due to indigestion and constipation. Remedies can include:

  1. Foods that are gut-friendly such as yogurt, kefir, kombucha, etc. for better digestion.
  2. Optimum water and fiber intake to avoid constipation
  3. Water residue which is used for white rice preparation. This will reduce the heat in the body.
  4. Concoction of fenugreek seeds: Boil fenugreek seeds in water till it reduced to half, cool it and drink.
  5. Guava leaves can be boiled in water, cool down, and drink – this also helps relieve vaginal itching.
  6. Proper vaginal hygiene
  7. Include iron-rich food such as black raisins, dried apricots and green leafy vegetables, etc.

Keep Summer Cool With The Right Foods

keep your summer cool It’s summer—that amazing time of year where the fresh produce brings in lots of nutrient-rich, healthy choices. But, what about the scorching heat and associated dehydration, perspiration, rashes, itchiness and tiredness we experience? Well, of course – drink more water! Now apart from the lemon juice and watermelons, have you tried any other natural coolant? Let me remind you of these food products our grandma used every summer to keep the heat at bay.

Foods To Help You Keep Your Summer Cool!

  1. Kokam: Kokam juice is a very refreshing drink with a cooling effect on the body. It not only quenches thirst, but also prevents dehydration and sunstroke due to summer heat. Kokam has other health benefits too like the garcinol present in kokam has excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help prevent the growth of cancer cells. The hydroxyl acetic acid helps reducing the conversion of carbohydrates to fats, preventing fat deposition.
  2. Dried Black Currants: Dried Black Currants are an excellent source of nutrients that are essential for health, including dietary fiber, copper, manganese and potassium. Potassium allows electrochemical balance which allows muscle contraction and nerve cell impulse transmission to occur properly. Because of water loss, potassium becomes quite important.
  3. Fennel Seeds: Fennel is an aromatic and flavorful herb that has several culinary as well as medicinal uses. In addition to its popular use as a breath freshener, it helps relieve a number of ailments and facilitates better health due to its anti inflammatory, antimicrobial, expectorant, diuretic, anticarcinogenic and antioxidant properties. It contains vitamin C, potassium, manganese, iron, folate, and fiber as well. It is also rich in phytonutrients and has a high concentration of volatile oils. It cools the body off by increasing perspiration and maintaining body temperature.
  4. Rock sugar candy or Mishri or khadishaker (in Hindi): Mishri or Rock Sugar is a crystallized sugar, sweet candy that is packed with numerous health benefits. Mishri is widely used as a refreshing drink during summers, Fennel seed powder with ground Mishri makes a refreshing drink to fight the harsh summer heat. It exerts a soothing effect on the mind and body and relaxes you from stress.
  5. Sattu: Sattu is extremely beneficial for your health. It is extracted from barely, wheat or gram. Mix sattu, little lemon juice drops, salt and roasted cumin powder to get a very healthy drink!

With these food one can also use:

  • Curd or buttermilk.
  • Raw mango
  • Watermelon
  • Coconut water
  • Bottle gourd
  • Salad leaves (especially mint leaves)

During summer, it’s always best to go for a light meal which can be easily digested. Oily and junk food should be avoided. Avoid too much of tea and coffee as it contains caffeine which results in dehydration. Limit your tea and coffee intake to two cups a day. You can switch to green tea as it contains antioxidants which can help you during summer.

Do not eat spicy, hot and extremely salty food as they are hard to digest and will have ill effects on the skin and digestion. Also avoid consuming foods that are not in season as they may come with the risk of chemicals and preservatives that are applied to fruits and veggies to keep them fresh.

We hope these tips help you keep your summer cool! For more tips on managing your diet and nutrition during summer, click here or get expert advice from a GOQii Coach by subscribing for Personalised Health Coaching here.

Tips to Help You Sleep Better!

sleep better

Sleep! You might have already read so many articles about this especially when you’ve not been getting quality sleep. Before we go deeper into how you can sleep better, let us first understand how we define sleep! As per the world’s sleep research, William Dement (Author of promise of sleep) defines sleep as the ‘Moment when the brain starts producing theta waves’.

Too technical! What exactly are theta waves? I don’t want to get too technical, so I will talk about medical jargon in the most simplest way possible.

The Brain Produces ‘Waves’ All The Time!

While you are awake (concentrating), your brain produces beta waves. When you are daydreaming, relaxing or lying around, your brain produces alpha waves. While your body is in the transition from relaxing to sleeping, that’s when your brain starts producing theta waves. When your body is in deep sleep, your body produces delta waves. sleep better

During this period, your body starts producing growth hormones. I always tell this to my patients. Your body undergoes repairs when you enter deep sleep which is very crucial for overall well being. When I was learning more about sleep, the one question that often came to mind was, “How and when do we get dreams?”

After theta waves, there is one interesting thing which happens. It is called as REM Sleep or Rapid Eye Movement Sleep. This is when your eyes are moving with closed eyelids. You might be dreaming but you will not remember your dreams completely the next day. According to me, these are just basic things about sleep which everyone should be aware of (and with good reason).

Do you ever get a feeling of waking up tired after sleeping for almost 9 hours? When I ask this question to my patients, they say, “I am tired all the time!” This is called as Sleep Deprivation.

How Do You Know That You Are Sleep Deprived?

I read a lot! One of the books that I read on sleep is the Promise of Sleep. The book spoke about a very cool way of figuring out if we are sleep deprived or not. Check out the steps below:

  • Go to bed with a spoon in your hand
  • Your hand should be in a position where the spoon is over the floor and not over the bed
  • Note the time when you plan to sleep
  • As soon as you fall asleep, your hand muscles will relax. Once this happens, the spoon will fall on the floor and the noise will wake you up.
  • Note the time when you wake up. That’s your own sleep latency.

There are many other sleep tests which are done as well to figure sleep deprivation out.

Now that we understand what happens when we sleep,

Follow These Tips to Sleep Better

As always, we go back to our basics: Sleep Hygiene

  • Restrict Tea/Coffee/Green Tea and other caffeinated drinks. Caffeine circulates in the system for at least 7.5 hours. Taking caffeinated drinks close to bedtime can mess your sleep schedule.
  • Make sure you create a sunset kind of environment post sunset with yellow dim lights so your body realizes that it’s the time for you to relax, rest and sleep. Same thing goes for the gadgets! Blue light from your devices block the sleep hormone production. If you have long screen hours, try using blue blocking glasses post sunset.
  • Make sure that your room temperature is around 19-20. Usually, our body temperature tends to fall when we sleep. This will help you in maintaining an ideal body temperature when you wake up.
  • Try to avoid exercising, watching exciting/horror movies which will keep your mind active for a long period of time.

Apart from the basics,

Try the Sleep Restriction State Method

  • If you think you sleep 4 hours per night, then sleep for 4 hours only
  • Go to bed at 1 AM and set your alarm clock for 6AM. You’re not allowed to go to bed earlier than 1AM, or wake up later than 6AM.
  • You will be tired the following day. Extremely tired! That’s a good thing. You will be wondering, what is good in being tired but this will drive you to sleep earlier the next day
  • The next day, you add ½ hour to the sleep time. You go to bed at 12:30AM instead of 1 AM and wake up at 6AM.
  • Keep increasing your sleep window by ½ hour per day till you feel the sleep debt is paid off.

Why are we doing this? It’s because during this time of the sleep window, you won’t be allowed to use stimulants to keep yourself up. No coffee or any kind of caffeinated beverages. We are doing this so that your body starts building up the fatigue, drowsiness and eventually you will end up sleeping. This will help in recovering your sleep debt.

Sometimes, stiff neck muscles will decrease the blood supply to the brain, which results into fragmented sleep. Getting a physio evaluation for the same will also help in improving sleep quality.

We hope these tips help you sleep better! Do type your thoughts and queries in the comments below!
