While it is difficult to find single foods that completely prevent diabetes complications like heart disease, kidney issues, or sudden sugar spikes, there are powerful, nutrient-dense foods that can help you reduce your overall carbohydrate intake and keep your blood sugar in check.

Let’s take a look at the top 10 dietary additions that can make a massive difference in your daily diabetes management.

Top 10 Foods For Diabetics 

  1. Cinnamon
    This fragrant golden spice helps in controlling sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in Type 2 Diabetes. It adds a natural, warm flavour to food and can easily be sprinkled on tea, coffee, oatmeal, and smoothies. Studies have shown that just ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon daily can improve fasting blood sugar and boost insulin sensitivity.
  2. Extra Virgin Olive OilExtra-virgin olive oil contains antioxidants called polyphenols which are extremely beneficial for heart health. Olive oil is one of the best sources of MUFA (Monounsaturated Fatty Acids) when it comes to managing diabetes. Several studies have shown that MUFAs help keep blood sugar in check by lowering insulin resistance. It also keeps you full, minimizes spikes, and aids in the absorption of vital nutrients. A healthy daily intake is about 1-2 tsp (5ml-10 ml).
  3. Nuts
    Nuts are the ultimate snacking food for managing diabetes because they are delicious, satisfying, and highly nutritious. Nuts like walnuts, almonds, cashews, and pistachios are a boon because they are low in digestible carbohydrates but high in protein and healthy fats. This unique macronutrient profile helps stabilize blood sugar and reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol. Aim for a small handful (approx. 20-30 gm) daily, but be sure to avoid heavily salted or roasted-in-oil varieties.
  4. Beans
    Beans are complex carbohydrates loaded with fiber and rich in protein, which gives you a prolonged feeling of satiety. They are inexpensive, easily available, and incredibly versatile. Having beans in your diet regularly can control blood sugar and lower blood pressure. You can add approximately one bowl (25-30 gm raw) daily to your salads, soups, or vegetable curries to help regulate your levels.
  5. Quinoa
    Quinoa is considered a complete protein because it contains all nine essential amino acids needed to build muscle, and it is rich in minerals such as iron and magnesium. This protein-rich whole grain is a fantastic substitute for white rice. Because it is rich in fiber, it digests slowly, preventing sudden blood sugar spikes. Taking 20-30 gm of quinoa daily whether in a salad or mixed with vegetables is highly effective for both sugar control and weight loss.
  6. Fenugreek Seeds
    Fenugreek seeds are widely known for their effectiveness in traditional diabetes management. They are incredibly rich in soluble fiber, which lowers blood sugar levels by slowing down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates. Studies suggest a daily dose of about 10 gm of fenugreek seeds, soaked overnight in water, helps significantly in controlling Type 2 Diabetes.

It is also known to reduce blood pressure and boost overall immunity. You can crush 1-2 cloves of raw garlic and consume them with water early in the morning, or simply use them generously in your daily cooking.

    Turmeric is a powerful spice with numerous health benefits. It contains an active compound called curcumin, which lowers inflammation, reduces blood sugar, and specifically benefits kidney and heart health in diabetics. As a staple in Indian cuisine, it is easy to include. Adding ¼ to ½ tsp in warm water or milk can boost immunity and help regulate your levels.

Why Your Body Needs Curcumin or Turmeric Extract!

CurcuminMany mails, white papers and journals have been written on the power of turmeric extract, now termed as ‘Yellow Gold’ in the west. The fascinating part is that the consumption of Curcumin has been linked to positive benefits in almost every possible disease or ailment one can think of. From cancer to arthritis, to the possible prevention of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

How Curcumin Eases Disease

Cardiovascular Disease
Numerous studies show that it may have a protective role in cardiovascular diseases. Since cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death, one can argue that everyone should include turmeric in their diet, or perhaps take a turmeric supplement. One study discusses how the antioxidant effects of Curcumin may prevent diabetic cardiovascular complications.

The same study shows that the anti-thrombotic, anti-proliferative, and anti-inflammatory effects of Curcumin and the effect of it decreasing the serum cholesterol level may protect against the pathological changes occurring with atherosclerosis.

Another study demonstrates how dietary Curcumin is effective at inhibiting maladaptive cardiac repair and preserving cardiac function after ischemia and reperfusion. It also goes on to say that it has potential as a treatment for patients who have had a heart attack.

Diabetes
This, of course, also ties into cardiovascular health but there have been separate studies which show how Curcumin can help with diabetes. One study involved people in a pre-diabetic population who were taking Curcumin (or a placebo) for 9 months. The study concluded by showing that it significantly lowered the number of pre-diabetic individuals who eventually developed Type-2 diabetes. The same study also showed that it appeared to improve overall function of beta cells. Another study concluded that Curcumin supplementation could improve diabetes-induced endothelial dysfunction significantly. Yet, another study demonstrated how it attenuates diabetic neuropathic pain.

Asthma and Allergies
A few studies have shown that it might be beneficial for people with asthma and allergies. One study showed that Curcumin treatments markedly attenuated the inflammation in asthma by regulating T regulatory/Th17 balance. The findings supported the possible use of Curcumin as a therapeutic drug for patients with allergic asthma. Another study showed that it alleviates the pathological changes of chronic asthma, and might be a promising therapy for asthma in the future

Skin Diseases
It can even help with certain skin conditions! One study discusses how it protects the skin by quenching free radicals and reducing inflammation. The same study also mentioned how it reduces wound-healing time, improved collagen deposition and increased fibroblast and vascular density in wounds, thereby enhancing both normal and impaired wound-healing. The study concluded by suggesting that Curcumin might be a potent nontoxic agent for treating skin diseases. Another study suggests that Oral Curcumin might be beneficial in the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis, although it concluded by stating that large placebo-controlled studies are necessary before recommending Oral Curcumin as a psoriasis treatment.

Autoimmunity
To no surprise, because it can help greatly with inflammation, this herb can be extremely valuable in the treatment of certain autoimmune conditions, including Graves’ Disease and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Thyroid cancer is the most common type of cancer when it comes to the endocrine system. A recent study reported that Curcumin inhibits multiple metastasis steps of K1 papillary thyroid cancer cells. These findings showed that it might be effective for the treatment of aggressive papillary thyroid carcinomas.

Other Benefits
There are even more potential benefits of taking Curcumin. One study discussed how dietary Curcumin is a strong candidate for use in the prevention or treatment of major disabling age-related neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and stroke. Another study suggested that it has enormous potential in the prevention and therapy of cancer. It might also be useful as a treatment for ulcerative colitis as well as benefit people with osteoarthritis.

10 Inflammation Fighting Winter Foods You Must Include In Your Diet

inflammation remedyInflammation is linked with so many serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart diseases, asthma, arthritis, etc. The use of anti-inflammatory drugs is very common and sometimes with no alternative as well. As they say, prevention is always better than cure! Eating anti-inflammatory food is a natural solution without any side effects.  During winter, there’s less flow of blood which makes the joints colder and stiffer – leading to inflammation. The pain receptors become more sensitive in winters which result in pain, swelling in joints and other parts of the body.

Fight Inflammation with a Healthy Diet

Here’s a list of foods that should be included in your diet during winter to prevent inflammation.

  1. Turmeric: This spice is also known as “Yellow Gold” in western countries. The Indian cuisine is incomplete without this spice.  It’s a food enhancer with great health values. It has curcumin which is a very powerful anti-inflammatory substance. Turmeric works great in treating rheumatoid arthritis and fighting inflammation.
  2. Ginger: is a great valuable cooking spice in our kitchen. It has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. It helps in lessen inflammation as well in treating allergic infections, especially during the winter season.  We normally use this spice while making tea, soup, curries, etc.
  3. Walnuts: are always my favourite healthy snacking option during winter. It contains phytonutrients which reduce the risk of heart diseases and diabetes. It has omega 3 fatty acids which reduce inflammation in the body.
  4. Beets: are highly rich in antioxidants and they do a good job in reducing inflammation. It’s a valuable vegetable loaded with magnesium. We should not forget beets in our daily diet (in salads, curd, smoothies) during winter.
  5. Green Leafy Vegetables: like spinach, kale, mustard and fenugreek grow best in winter. Due to the richness of antioxidants, omega3 fatty acids, Vit-C, etc. we should include them regularly in winter months.
  6. Pineapple: It contains a substance called bromelain that reduces the infections during winter and lessens the risk of strokes and even heart diseases. It works as a great remedy for people who have high uric acid (Gout). Bromelain also helps reduce inflammation.
  7. Blueberries: are my favorite! It has an antioxidant substance named quercetin which is generally found in citrus fruits. Quercetin is very effective in decreasing many types of infections and fighting cancer.
  8. Broccoli: is a very nutritious cruciferous vegetable that is rich in antioxidants. It has high amounts of potassium and magnesium with anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces stress and the risk of cancer. A disclaimer here: If you have thyroid, avoid eating cruciferous vegetables 
  9. Tomatoes: are a nutritional powerhouse. It’s packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Tomatoes are an excellent source of lycopene which reduces inflammation in the body and helps protect the body against cancer as well.  
  10. Salmon: As we have already discussed so many anti-inflammatory fruits and vegetables, Salmon is a non-vegetarian option. It’s great anti-inflammatory food with essential omega 3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid. Omega 3 gives relief in inflammation and can reduce the need for anti-inflammatory drugs. 

Apart from above you can:

  • Dress warmly depending on the weather
  • Stay hydrated and active
  • Exercise regularly to strengthen your muscles
  • Get out under the sun to maintain vitamin D levels
  • Eat a balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight

Wonder Herbs That Can Reduce Blood Sugar

reduce blood sugarAn epidemic worldwide, Diabetes is a disorder which alters blood sugar levels and the production of insulin that can cause various complications if left untreated. Although, it can be managed through lifestyle modifications and exercises. A few spices and herbs along with dietary changes can reduce blood sugar. These remedies are not only economic but can help in reducing dependency on medicines too. 

Herbs That Can Reduce Blood Sugar

1. Fenugreek: seeds are rich in minerals, vitamins, calcium, iron and proteins. It helps in controlling sugar and releasing insulin. The seeds have a high content of dietary soluble fibre which helps in slowing down the absorption of carbs and sugar.
How to Consume:

  • You can soak 1–2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water overnight. Chew the seeds and drink the water the next morning on an empty stomach.
  • Fenugreek leaves can be added in dough for chapatis or in vegetables.
  • Seeds can be dry roasted to add them in food preparations.
  • Seeds can be sprouted for salads.

2. Oregano: Due to high content of glycosides, flavonoids and polyphenols, Oregano helps reduce blood sugar levels. It helps in increasing the level of insulin in the body too.
How to Consume:

  • In dried form, oregano can be added in salads, soups, or other dishes.
  • Fresh herbs can be added in boiling water, let it steep for 5mins, strain and drink as tea in the morning.
  • You can chew 5-6 oregano leaves regularly.

3. Curry Leaves: are the aromatic leaves widely used in culinary preparations. It helps in decreasing blood sugar levels and also promotes carbohydrate metabolism.
How to Consume: Curry leaves can be chewed every day on an empty stomach or can be used in preparation of food in kitchen

4. Aloe Vera: is a magical herb that not only controls diabetes but has proven beneficial in other ailments too.
How to Consume: You can prepare Aloe Vera juice by adding 2 teaspoons of Aloe Vera gel in a glass of water and drink it twice a day.

5. Turmeric: Curcumin, an active component in turmeric, helps reduce blood sugar, improve beta cell function and fatty acid oxidation, thereby proving to be a miracle ingredient to combat the disease.
How to Consume:

  • Turmeric powder can be used in cooking food or blend in smoothies.
  • Curcumin capsules can be taken twice a day before meals.

6. Clove: in ayurveda, are used as a main ingredient to cure various ailments. This spice also helps in stabilising blood sugar levels.
How to Consume:

  • Cloves can be used in culinary dishes.
  • Coarsely grind the cloves and add them to a mug of boiling water. Let it boil for about 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink it warm.

7. Ginger: Gingerol is an active component present in ginger and is a common sugar control medicine in Ayurveda. It increases the secretion of insulin in the pancreas.
How to Consume: Ginger can be used to prepare ginger tea or can be chewed in raw form daily.

8. Sadabahar: is a common plant found in India. Its flowers are the main component to help reduce blood sugar levels.
How to Consume:

  • Sadabahar flowers can be boiled in water for a few minutes, strain and drink as tea in the morning.
  • 3-4 leaves can be chewed daily on an empty stomach.

9. Neem: Since time immemorial, neem is used for various ailments. Not only leaves, all parts of this plant are used in ayurveda medicines. Neem is also known to reduce blood sugar levels.
How to Consume: Boil about 10 neem leaves in a glass of water for 5 minutes till the leaves become soft and the water turns green. Strain and drink twice a day.
