Pranayama To Detoxify The Body, Mind And Vital Organs

detox your body with pranayama

Pranayama is the yogic practice of breath control. It means the ability to expand our health by controlling the breath. There are various ways and positions to practice yogic breathing.

The combination of pranayama and meditation has positive effects in curing various problems like acidity, stress, anxiety, skin diseases, improved blood circulation, and managing lifestyle disorders such as thyroid, PCOS, controlling blood sugar and blood pressure.

We breathe daily, right? So what is pranayama? Why Pranayama?

Pranayama is slow, deep breathing, in a rhythm. The breathing that we do normally is not in rhythm and is non-harmonic. It is in pranayama that gets our mind and organs in sync. There are various pranayama practices which you can do daily.

1. Kapalbhati Pranayama
This is a famous pranayama practice also known as The Skull Shining Breathing Technique. Kapalbhati has  physiological effects on cardiovascular, digestive and nervous systems.

Benefits of Kapalbhati Pranayama:

  • It Generates heat in the system to help dissolve toxins and waste matter.
  • Daily practice helps in adding luster to your face and you get glowing skin
  • Improves digestion and can help alleviate gastrointestinal problems like acidity, indigestion and flatulence.
  • Improves the function of kidneys and liver as it provides a gentle massage to the organs.
  • If practiced daily helps in reducing belly fat.
  • Kapalbhati helps reduce stress in the eyes, thus reduces dark circles around the eyes.
  • It triggers your abdominal region, so it’s beneficial for diabetic patients.
  • It improves the blood circulation problem in whole body parts.

2. Anulom Vilom
Also known as Alternate nostril breathing, it has various benefits for the body internally and externally. Oxygen is pure and required by the body for every single process to take place and therefore, it is vital for us to breath right and Anulom Vilom serves the purpose. It is the best way of balancing the Tri Dosas (Tri means “three” and the meaning of dosas is impurities) in our body i.e. Vaat, Pitta and Kaffa. All three are the cause of all diseases. So, it is important to balance them. Our body gets ill when Tri Dosas are not in harmony.

Benefits of Anulom vilom Pranayama

  • It can provide some relief from mental health problems like Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Tension, etc.
  • Improves the working of the lungs, beneficial for  most respiratory problems like (Bronchitis, Asthma), etc.
  • Best breathing technique for boosting your memory – makes your brain sharper, increases concentration and gathers focus.
  • Improves your immune system, so it can cure general issues like cough & cold.
  • Alternate nostril breathing is an ideal breathing technique for maintaining your heart healthy.

3. Sheetali Pranayama
The meaning of the word “Sheetali” is cooling down. This pranayama practice is a process to cool your body down. It gives the feeling of coldness by decreasing the body temperature, thereby having a positive impact on our nervous system and endocrine glands. Extremely helpful during the summer season.

Benefits of Sheetali Pranayama

  • It is useful in managing disorders related to tongue, mouth and throat.
  • It is very beneficial in treating diseases of the spleen.
  • Helpful in fever by cooling the system down.
  • Controls and manages high blood pressure.
  • It purifies the blood.
  • Improves sleep quality and is best for fighting Insomnia.
  • It calms the mind, as it is an effective stress buster. Once our mind is calm, we can easily deal with negative emotions like  anger and anxiety.
  • Effective in hyperacidity. Excellent for people who have GERD and face issues with acidity and indigestion.

There is another breathing practice similar to Sheetali, known as Sheetkari pranayama.

Both are similar, the only difference is the way of breathing. In Sheetali, we breathe in by folding the tongue and breathe out from the nose. In Sheetkari, we inhale through the teeth and exhale from the nose.

Benefits of Sheetkari Pranayama

  • Effective against dental problems like bad breath, bleeding gums and pyorrhea.
  • Balances body temperature.
  • Calms the mind, reduces emotional excitation and mental tension.
  • Can help you manage depression, anxiety and panic attacks.

As a yoga instructor, I get these questions a lot of time: What is the best time to do pranayama? Generally, morning is the best time for a breathing exercise as it helps us activate our organs. Plus, on an empty stomach, we achieve optimum benefits. To know why morning yoga is beneficial, you can have a look at my previous article: https://goqii.com/blog/benefits-of-practicing-morning-yoga-at-home.

5 Simple Activities To Maintain Good Health

Maintain good health

What really comprises good health? A textbook definition would be that it is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. So by this definition, is there a sound strategy to maintain good health? Well, thankfully, it is not as difficult as it sounds like.

5 Simple Activities To Help You Maintain Good Health

1. 10k Steps A Day
All of us know that being active and exercising regulates our hormones, immune system, mental health and increases our life span. We’re also aware that the 21st century lifestyle is becoming increasingly sedentary. Hitting the gym or getting a good workout every day is close to impossible. Here’s where trying to clock in 10k steps a day can do a lot for your life. There is no magic beyond this number. It is just enough to get a need to be active throughout the day. It will keep a target in front of your eyes and can be performed any time during the day. Basically, it helps you with your progress and consistency. Moreover, most people enjoy walking and also they stick to it long term and they can benefit from this activity every single day. One more special thing it offers is it makes you sort of active throughout the day in addition to whatever workout you do. Plus, it can be done in installments throughout the day, for instance post meal walks (walking at least 10-15mins after each meal), walking while attending calls, using stairs instead of lift and not using vehicles for short distances.

2. Sleep
A good night’s sleep of 7-8 hours is extremely important for the body (especially when you are training). Sleep maintains your mental and physical health and helps your body recover. Hormones like prolactin, luteinizing hormones and growth hormones increase during sleep and secretion of cortisol (stress hormone) is inhibited. Your body uses tryptophan and turns it into a B vitamin called niacin which plays a key role in creating serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is associated with sleep and melatonin levels (a hormone that controls your sleep-wake cycle). Foods like sweet potato, turmeric powder, chicken, eggs and milk etc. are high in tryptophan and help you sleep.

3. Nutrition
It’s an important aspect for living organisms. The beauty of mother nature is it can nourish all kinds of living organisms, no matter vegetarians or non-vegetarians and nutritional requirements vary from individual to individual, sports to sports and competition to competition. To have a healthy life, make water as your drink of choice (first priority), and include eating plant-based foods more often and choose highly-processed or ultra-processed foods, less often. Choose recipes with plenty of vegetables and fruit. Your goal is to fill half your plate with vegetables and fruits at every meal. Choose bright, coloured fruits and vegetables each day, especially orange and dark green vegetables.

4. NEAT(Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis)
NEAT is any activity you do, which doesn’t count as exercise because it is not as intense as exercise but counts as moments that burn calories. Walking to the kitchen or the bathroom or moving your hands around, all come under NEAT. So, the more you move throughout the day, the higher your NEAT. NEAT expenditure can vary massively, that’s why some people seem to burn more calories. Just because generally, they move a lot more. Even when they are sitting, they are not just sitting, they continuously move their legs and hands and that burns calories.

5. Monitor Progress
Always monitor your progress, that will help you to know where exactly you are in your journey. How can you monitor your progress? If you’re a person who runs or jogs, time yourself and see if you get quicker each time you do it. And when it comes to food, at the end of the day, just write down everything you have consumed and figure out what and all unnecessary foods you are consuming and start avoiding those. You can do your food and activity logging via the GOQii App as well. Monitoring your progress will help you stay disciplined and consistent.

These 5 simple steps will definitely help you maintain good health. Just ensure that initially your goal is realistic and doable. So, according to your time, schedule, fix a goal and go after it! We hope this article helps you. Do leave your thoughts in the comments below. For more on healthy living, check out Healthy Reads or tune in to LIVE sessions by experts on GOQii Play.

Curious case of my ‘Bullet Proof Coffee’

bulletproof-coffee

I have been having ‘Bullet Proof Coffee’ and guess what? every time I post a picture of my cuppa coffee on social media, it has raised immense curiosity and next I know, I am flooded with messages asking me what is this ‘Bullet Proof Coffee’?

It all started with me undertaking ‘Intermittent fasting’ (IF). This is an age old concept and has been a secret to health. However, for many decades this concept was forgotten. But, now many nutrition and lifestyle experts are once again bringing back this concept of fasting and recommending it to people as it comes with huge benefits if done in the right manner. The benefits are weight loss through fat burning, increased energy through the day, improve over health, simplify lifestyle among many others.

What is Intermittent Fasting? It is a concept where you fast for almost 12-14 hours. One can choose to fast how they want. IF is not about which foods you eat but more about when you eat. It’s all about following an ‘eating pattern’. In definition, IF is a term for an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating.

I chose to fast between dinner and lunch the next day a period of approximately 12-14 hours and this is part of my everyday routine. I have my dinner between 7.30 pm and 8 pm and only have water in between. Next morning around 8.30 am, I have a ‘Bullet Proof Coffee’ which is quite heavy and keeps me full and not crave for food till lunch at around 1 pm. After my lunch, I eat enough for a period of 8 hours and end with dinner at 8 pm.

Coming to your curiosity on what is ‘Bullet Proof Coffee’ and how I make it?

BPC was invented in the US by David Asprey, an entrepreneur, businessman and author from Albuquerque. Bullet Proof Coffee is nothing but Coffee with butter and oil.

My Bullet Proof Coffee is however Indianised and is very easy to prepare.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ tablespoon Blue Tokai organic Coffee or any other single origin organic coffee
  • 1  tablespoon 100% Pure MCT Oil ( This is available on Amazon.in)
  • 1-2 tablespoons Parsi Dairy Farm’s White Butter (unsalted) or use Ghee

Method:

1. Brew 1 cup of coffee using filtered water, just off the boil, using 2 1/2 heaping tablespoons freshly ground Blue Tokai Coffee beans

  1. Add in 1 tablespoons of MCT Oil to the hot coffee (It’s STRONG – start with 1 tsp. and work up over several days).
  2. Add 1-2 tablespoons white butter
  3. Mix it all in a blender for 20-30 seconds until it is nice and frothy like a latte

Benefits of Bullet Proof Coffee:

  • It is rich in taste
  • Bulletproof coffee can help prevent diabetes and also protect the liver, lower the risk of stroke, and help the brain fight depression.
  • It reduces cravings
  • It is a high-performance drink that has a large impact on your energy levels and cognitive functions. Reduces anxiety and improves mood.
  • This coffee keeps you energized for a long time.
