12 Tips For a Healthy Christmas Week

Tips for Healthy Christmas WeekWant to avoid looking like Santa this festive season? You’re sailing on eating right and exercising daily, then boom — the holidays are here, just waiting to put a kink in your routine! Food is everywhere. Spare time is nowhere. Add this to the emotions and stress of the season, and you’re sure to have a recipe for disastrous weight gain. Here are some tips to help you stay on course of your health goals and celebrate a Healthy Christmas Week!

Tips For a Healthy Christmas Week

  1. Quality Over Quantity: Learn to avoid mindlessly accepting whatever is offered and instead hold out for the snack you value the most, and have just a few. If possible, opt for something baked instead of going for something deep-fried.
  2. Eat Slowly. Enjoy. Move away: If your weakness is salted nuts, you can easily eat double the prescribed quantity without noticing. While the fat in nuts is the healthy unsaturated type that doesn’t clog up your arteries, when it comes to your waistline, calories are still calories. Solution? Have a taste, eat it slowly and really enjoy it. “Try to chew your food well, concentrate on the flavour you’re experiencing and appreciate the goodness”. Then, move away from the source so you can’t keep eating more than your fill.
  3. Beware of the Buffet: People often look at a buffet as though it’s their last meal on earth. The smartest thing to do when surrounded by so much temptation is to walk around and eye everything first. Then go back and take a bit of what you really like. Before doing so, ask yourself, “Do I really want this?” Avoid the trap of thinking you have to get your money’s worth. If you don’t let it go to waste, it will end up around your waist.
  4. Watch Your Drinks: Alcohol plays a big part in Christmas weight gain. Sometimes, when surrounded by family and friends, you might not realize when 1 drink turns into 10. Your best bet is to put a cap on the amount of drinks you’ll have. Limit yourself to 3 drinks and space them out. In fact, if you can dilute your drink with water or ice, go for it! Opting to be the nominated driver might just give you the excuse to not drink at all!
  5. Keep Up Some Activity: Did you know that dancing can help you burn off calories. It’s a great way to shake a leg and shake off some extra calories as well. If dancing is not your thing, try brisk walking in the cool early morning breeze. Should work as a good start to the day. Don’t skip a post-dinner stroll with family, friends or your loved one. It can be magical!
  6. Make Sure You Log: Logging food, water intake and exercise can keep you accountable. Don’t look at it as a burden. This will help you stay on track and keep an account of what you’ve been eating and drinking. Be honest and log exactly what you eat!
  7. Earn Your Treats Before You Indulge: Treats aren’t really enjoyable if they leave you feeling guilty afterward. Eat healthy the day before heading out to a holiday party or work up a sweat before sitting down for a big holiday meal. This will help you feel less guilty and enjoy the movement.
  8. Listen to Your Tummy: The human body has an amazing ability to regulate food intake…if we actually listen to it! If you overindulge at a holiday feast, hold off on eating until you truly feel hungry again. Don’t eat just because there’s only one slice of pie left on the table, or because your Christmas Brunch begins at 10 AM. If you’re not hungry, sip on some tea or coffee while everyone else digs in, and make yourself a small plate later. It’ll still be there when your tummy grumbles!
  9. Just Say NO to Food Pushers: Food pushers are the people who seem to believe that their holiday celebration isn’t complete until you give in to their food offerings. You know them — the co-worker with a jar of candies, mom with her apple pie, or the friend who won’t let you leave without a plate of cookies. It’s OK to politely say, “No! Thank you!” It won’t hurt your relationship.
  10. Just Do It: Schedule your exercise time. Not only will you feel better about the indulgences that come with the holidays, but exercise will also will help relieve holiday stress. Take something out of your schedule if you need to, but not exercise. The endorphins from working out will only boost your holiday spirit!
  11. Share the Love: When going to a holiday gathering, bring a healthy dish that everyone can enjoy without feeling guilty.
  12. Snack before the party: Avoid going to holiday parties on an empty stomach. Eat a light and healthy snack, such as one with protein, to keep you feeling full before heading out. This will help you avoid overindulging later. Try a protein bar or some nuts and seeds.

7 Healthy, Nutritious SWEETS

sugarfree dryfuit barfi 1

When you hear the word “sweets,” one expects loads of sugar and fatty foods. But who ever said that sweets cannot be nutritious and healthy?

There are some healthy and nutritious sweets which will not only satisfy your sugar cravings but are also sure to help you improve your health and immunity. Let’s have a look at these 7 recipes I have in store for you.

1. Date Rolls

date-rolls

Ingredients Amount
Dates 1 cup
Almonds 8-10 nos
Dry ginger powder 1 tbsp
Gum (gond/ dink) 1 tsp
Cow’s Ghee 1 tbsp

Note on Gum (Gond): This edible gum, also known as gond katira or Tragacanth gum, is a natural plant exudate. It is known for being a coolant and is rich in soluble fibre. It is easily available where grains and dry fruits are sold.

METHOD:

  1. Warm the ghee in a pan. Once it heats up, add the gum and stir until it swells. Remove to a plate.
  2. In the remaining ghee in the pan, sauté the dates for a few minutes.
  3. Turn off the heat and add the chopped almonds, dry ginger powder, and the fried gum.
  4. Mix it well and form into rolls. Garnish with almond slivers.
  5. Serve at room temperature.

P.S: You can add a little cocoa powder to give it a chocolaty taste. You can also use walnuts instead of almonds.

BENEFITS: Dates are a rich source of iron, ginger powder is anti-inflammatory, almonds are a rich source of Omega-3 fats, and gum is good for bones. All in all, this is a super immunity and health-booster sweet.

2. Sesame Chikki or Blocks

Sesame Chikki

Ingredients Amount
Roasted Sesame seeds/ Unsalted peanuts 1 cup
Jaggery ½ cup
Oil For greasing

METHOD:

  1. Take ½ cup of jaggery pieces in a pan. Over low heat, melt the jaggery, stirring continuously.
  2. Keep stirring until it attains a hard-ball consistency (check by dropping some jaggery syrup into cold water; it should harden like candy).
  3. Once the hard-ball consistency is achieved, add the roasted sesame seeds (or peanuts) to the jaggery syrup. Mix well.
  4. Remove the mixture from the heat and pour it onto a greased platform. Roll the mixture into a thin film (you must roll this while it is hot).
  5. It will harden as it cools, after which you can break it into small pieces.

P.S: You can use almonds, walnuts, dalia (roasted unsalted gram dal), or rajgira (amaranth seeds) instead.

BENEFITS: Jaggery is a rich source of iron, and til (sesame seed) is a super source of calcium. Jaggery-til chikki is excellent for women during their menses, as it can help ease menstrual pain. When peanuts or other nuts are used, it serves as an excellent, preservative-free energy bar.

3. Makhana (Foxnut) Kheer

Ingredients Amount
Makahana/ foxnut 1 cup
Low-fat milk 500 ml
Cardamom powder 1 tsp
Almonds 6-8 nos
Ghee 1 tsp
Jaggery Approx. 3-4 tbsp
Saffron Optional

METHOD:

  1. In a pan, take a tablespoon of ghee and roast the foxnuts. You can powder some of the foxnuts if you want a thicker consistency.
  2. In another pan, heat the milk. When it comes to a boil, add the foxnuts, stir well, and simmer for 5-10 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add the cardamom powder, a pinch of saffron, and almond slivers.
  4. Add jaggery and stir well until dissolved.
  5. If you want a thicker consistency, simmer for a few minutes more, stirring occasionally.

P.S: You can replace Foxnuts with brown rice, grated carrot, grated bottle gourd, Haleem seeds, or Ragi.

BENEFITS: Foxnut is a rich source of calcium, high in fibre, antioxidants, and protein. When combined with milk, its nutritional value increases further. Almonds add Omega-3s and fibre. It serves as an excellent food for toddlers and infants, as well as for pregnant and lactating females.

4. Mango Yoghurt Candies

Mango Yogurt

Ingredients Amount
Low fat fresh yoghurt 1 cup
Ripe Mango puree 1 cup

METHOD:

  1. In a blender, mix the low-fat fresh yoghurt and the ripe mango puree well. Do not add any sugar, as the fruit has natural sweetness. If needed, add a stevia-based sweetener.
  2. Pour this blended puree into moulds. Freeze for 6-8 hours. You can add wooden sticks to give an ice lolly/popsicle effect.
  3. Unmould and serve immediately.
  4. Choose fruits that are fresh and ripe, as they are sweet and do not require sugar substitutes. You can use fruits like strawberries, litchi, kiwi, blueberry, or custard apple.

BENEFITS: Yoghurt is a great source of probiotics, which maintain gut health. This recipe is also a great source of vitamins and minerals from the fruit. It makes for an excellent sugarless, low-fat ice cream with no added preservatives.

5. Lapsi

lapsi

Ingredients Amount
Broken Wheat / Dalia/ fada 1 cup
Jaggery 1 cup
Cardamom powder ½   tsp
Almonds 6-8 nos
Ghee 2 tbsp
Raisins Optional

METHOD:

  1. Heat a tablespoon of ghee in a wide pan over medium heat. Stir in the broken wheat and roast until it gets a nutty aroma and the colour changes to golden orange.
  2. In another pan, dissolve the jaggery in 2 cups of warm water. Strain if you see any impurities.
  3. Pour the jaggery water and cardamom powder into the broken wheat, stirring continuously until well combined. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the wheat is tender.
  4. Allow the Lapsi to rest (covered) for five minutes.
  5. Stir in some of the almond slivers and raisins. Garnish with the remaining almond slivers and serve hot.

P.S: You can also use oats / coarsely ground Moong Dal Flour instead of broken wheat

BENEFITS: Broken wheat is rich in fibre, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorus. It contains all the nutrients present in whole wheat. When combined with jaggery, it becomes a nutrient-dense sweet.

6. Puran Poli

oetsVSiigjfbh_bigger

Ingredients Amount
Whole wheat flour 1 cup
Tur dal/ Chana dal / lentil 1 cup
Jaggery 1/2 cup
Cardamom powder ½   tsp
Nutmeg powder ¼ tsp
Ghee 1 tbsp
Oil 1 tsp
Saffron Optional
Salt To taste

METHOD:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the wheat flour with salt. Knead with water to form a firm dough. Add 1 teaspoon of oil, coat the dough, and knead for a couple more minutes until smooth. Cover and keep aside for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Cook the dal with 1.5 cups of water until soft. You can also pressure cook the dal for one whistle and simmer on low heat for a few minutes. Drain any excess water.
  3. Heat ghee in another pan over medium heat. Add the jaggery and stir until it dissolves completely.
  4. Stir in the cooked dal, saffron, cardamom, and nutmeg. Continue stirring the mixture until it thickens and leaves the sides of the pan. Turn off the heat and let the puran (filling) cool completely.
  5. Divide the dough and puran mixture into 6-7 equal portions. Roll out a roti (flatbread) with the help of dry wheat flour. Place a portion of the puran in the centre, bring the edges of the roti together, and fold over to cover the filling completely, sealing it.
  6. Flatten the stuffed dough, dust with a little flour, and gently roll it into a medium-sized poli. Do not put too much pressure, or the puran will come out.
  7. Preheat a skillet (tava) on medium-high. Place the Puran Poli onto the skillet and cook until golden brown on both sides, applying a minimal amount of ghee to give it a crispier texture.
  8. Repeat for all remaining portions.

BENEFITS: This is an excellent cereal-pulse combination, providing good quality proteins. It is also a good source of iron from the jaggery and has a high satiety value since it’s high in protein and fibre.

Indulge and yet stay in shape

Sounds surprising that you can indulge and yet stay in shape? It feels almost impossible? Believe me, it’s possible to achieve, only of course if you have the will to do so. No, we are not going to tell you to skip eating sweets and savouries altogether and indulge in salads alone. Festivals and family functions would not be half as much fun if they were devoid of those yummy goodies- sweets, snack platters, dry fruits and so on.

There is absolutely no need to feel deprived and skip them altogether. All you need to do is change your cooking habits and recipes a tad bit to make stuff that is low in fat, calories, salt and even sugar.

Here are a few simple tips that will help you eat the food you want and you won’t feel guilty binging on:

  • Use the god’s favourite sweetening agent- jaggery – to make sweets. Gurpaare (Shakkarpaare with a coating of jaggery) is one of the sweet snacks you can make easily. Gurkeladdoo is another option- mix any dal (pulses)  with jaggery to make these yummy laddoos.
  • Use sugar-free along with skimmed milk to prepare delicious sweets such as Phirni, kalakand, Kheer, various Bengali sweets, Carrot halwa, Sooji halwa etc. The rest of the recipes remain the same; just use less oil and no sugar.
  • When guests come, don’t serve only sweets but, also serve some homemade chatpate snacks such as BhelPuri, Chaklis, MethiMathris, etc. Make it a point to add some pulses, spinach, chopped mint leaves and coriander to your snacks to give them the required nutritional value.
  • Get innovative with snacks. Who says you have to stick to the routine menu? Dare to do something different and instead of serving cutlets and chips each time, serve roasted Masala Papad, Dahi puri with sprout filling, Sprout Chaat, MoongDaal Chaat with onions, coriander, tomatoes and tamarind chutney and so on.
  • Make dry fruits and nuts a regular item in your menu for guests as well as for yourself but of course eat these in moderation. Consume them in their natural form instead of frying them or adding extra salt or sugar to them.
  • While making snacks that need to be made with maize flour (Maida), mix in some high fibre flour such as bajra or ragi or soy flour.
  • Roast the salted snacks in the oven with just a few drops of olive oil so that they do not stick to the baking dish, instead of frying them.
  • Again, grill kebabs and bake cutlets in the oven or even the microwave instead of frying them.
  • Some guests may even like a portion of garlic bread with cutlets instead of binging on heavy sweets. Do go ahead and ask them. And if they do want it, just peel and crush some garlic pods quickly and add them in butter melted in the microwave and spread on the bread slices evenly. Now grill in the oven for a minute or two and your garlic bread is ready to serve.
  • For sweets such as Rabdi and Phirni, use condensed milk for a richer taste instead of adding fattening and full of calories khoya or mava.

Embracing a healthier approach to festive indulgence opens the door to guilt-free enjoyment. By making simple tweaks to your recipes and embracing nutritious alternatives, you can savor the flavors of celebration without compromising your well-being. So go ahead, delight in the festivities, create your health-conscious culinary masterpieces, and keep discovering more about mindful eating through our Healthy Reads. 10 Ways to Add Vegetables to Your Breakfast

vegetables to your breakfastYou’ve come across the saying “Eat breakfast like a king and dinner like a pauper”… being a nutritionist, I strongly believe in this. Yes, one should definitely eat a nutritionally lavish meal in the morning. Breakfast needs to be a combination of simple and complex carbs along with some high biological value sources of protein. But is it enough? Does it make a complete meal?

We often tend to forget to add fibres and other micronutrients in the first meal of the day, keeping it for later meals, and we miss on achieving the daily requirement.  Adding vegetables to your breakfast can help you improve your health in numerous ways and make it a complete meal. Let’s see how we can do that.

Ideas to Add Vegetables to Your Breakfast

  1. Try adding sautéed spinach to an open-faced egg or paneer sandwich. Spinach is a rich source of Vitamin A, C and K.
  2. Replace other root vegetables besides potatoes in your basic recipes. Try sweet potatoes, turnips, and even beetroot to get some extra vitamin boosts from these colourful root veggies.
  3. Cook a quinoa, veggie and egg scramble. A perfectly balanced breakfast for lazy mornings.
  4. Add spinach to your savoury oatmeal. Fibres in all together.
  5. Try shifting your salad to breakfast and add some grain along. Try Pizza crust waffle with a breakfast salad. A great way to indulge guilt-free.
  6. Avocado can be used as a spread on breads. To enhance the nutritional value, chopped veggies, salt and pepper can be added as a treat to your taste buds.
  7. Try skipping the toast along with omelette or scrambled eggs. Instead, replace it with Sauté greens. Whether you can add cream or simply cook them with garlic, is up to you.
  8. Add sautéed vegetables and mashed paneer/eggs to the pancakes/cheela you make at home. This would make it more filling and add an extra boost of protein as well.
  9. Busy enough to cook every morning? Drink it up then! Just blend up greens or vegetables into your morning smoothie and sip it on the way to the office.
  10. And the Easiest: Add vegetables in everything you cook, be it poha, vermicelli, and even upma!

We hope this article helps you add more vegetables to your breakfast for a power-packed start to your day! Do try them all out and let us know in the comments below.
