Acidity – Its Symptoms and Prevention

Acidity is one of the most common problems that most individuals face. This is largely due to wrong eating habits and sometimes even stress. Bad eating, stress in a way is all connected. One leads to another and that, in turn, leads to unhealthy living and problems such as acidity.

But, to find a solution to the problem it is first important to understand what is Acidity?

Acidity is a term used for a set of symptoms caused by excess production of acid by the gastric glands of the stomach. The stomach normally secretes hydrochloric acid which is required for the breakdown and digestion of food that we eat. Acidity causes symptoms like dyspepsia, heartburn gastric inflammation, and ulcers in the stomach.

Now, there are some factors which cause acidity such as eating habits, fad diets, stress, smoking and alcohol consumption, lack of physical activity, irregularity in eating pattern, consumption of oily and spicy foods. Apart from these certain medicines are too responsible for the cause of acidity.

Some of the symptoms which can be felt as a result of acidity can be:

  1. Burning session in the stomach
  2. Burning session in the throat
  3. Restlessness
  4. Belching
  5. Nausea
  6. Sour taste
  7. Indigestion
  8. Constipation

As correctly said, “Prevention is better than cure”

So let us look at some of the parameters to prevent acidity.

  1. Don’t consume spicy food or fried foods too often.
  2. Eat more fruits and vegetables. One should be taking at least 2 servings of fruits and 3-4 servings of vegetables. Green leafy vegetables would be a really good choice to go for.
  3. Eat small, regular meals. Try to reduce the gap between meals to not more than 3 hours.
  4. Consume your last meal at least a few hours before sleeping.
  5. Chew tulsi leaves, cloves, saunf (Aniseed), etc.
  6. Avoid medications like NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and steroids
  7. Reduce stress. Deep breathing, going for a walk and being in nature are some of the activities which can help in reducing stress.

However, if you are already suffering from acidity, I am discussing below some of the home remedies of acidity which really work. So before you start with antacids for the treatment, do try these home remedies and you may get rid of the problem.

  1. Basil leaves: Eat basil leaves thoroughly at first sign of acidity. Can also boil 4-5 leaves in a cup of water for 15 minutes.
  2. Cinnamon: Add half spoon of cinnamon powder in a cup of water, boil for few minutes and drink this 2-3 times a day.
  3. Buttermilk:
  • Grind half to one teaspoon of methi (fenugreek) seeds with little water to make a paste. Mix it in a glass of buttermilk and have it.
  • Add a tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of buttermilk and keep it for 5 minutes before drinking.
  • Mix a pinch of black pepper in a glass of buttermilk.
  • Mix a tablespoon of coriander leaf juice in a glass of buttermilk.
  1. Apple Cider vinegar:
  • Mix 1-2 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in half a cup of water and drink.
  • Mix 2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 1 teaspoon of organic honey and drink before eating a spicy meal.
  1. Cloves: Chew 2-3 cloves thoroughly
  2. Jaggery: Jaggery is high in potassium. After each meal, take a small piece.
  3. Ginger:
  • Can take 2-3 teaspoon of ginger juice in a day for combating acidity.
  • Can boil ginger in water and drink the water twice a day.
  1. Cumin seeds:
  • Crush roasted cumin seeds and stir in a glass of water. Drink after each meal.
  • Boil seeds in water, strain and drink.
  • Mix 1 teaspoon of coriander seed powder, a teaspoon of cumin seed powder and a teaspoon of fennel seed powder and some sugar in half cup of water and drink empty stomach.
  1. Aniseed: Soak a teaspoon of aniseed in a cup of boiled water overnight. In the morning, strain the water add a teaspoon of organic honey and sip it at least 3 times during the day.
  2. Cold milk: After a meal, drink a glass of cold milk, not iced milk.
  3. Lemon and ginger juice 15 minutes post meal, zaps acidity quickly.

If eating right and proper preventive measures are adhered to, Acidity can be averted.

Menstrual Cramps & Ways To Combat It

menstrual crampsMenstrual cramps are also called as Dysmenorrhea, like its name says ‘dys’ meaning difficult, ‘meno’ meaning month and ‘rrhea’ meaning flow i.e. difficult or painful monthly flow, and often a nightmare for most women. Its usual onset occurs around the time that menstruation begins. The pain is usually in the pelvis or lower abdomen.

Apart from this, there are certain other manifestations which women put up with during menstruation:

  • Nausea
  • Acidity
  • Acne
  • Bloating
  • Dizziness
  • Mood swings

Why Do We Get Menstrual Cramps?

Menstrual cramps are caused by an excess of “prostaglandins” hormones that are released from the endometrium (inner lining) of the uterus as it prepares to shed off. This is a necessary part of the process but in excess, it causes pain. If the uterus contracts strongly, blood flow is reduced and the supply of oxygen to the uterus muscle tissue decreases, causing severe pain.

Why Do Some Women Experience More Cramps Than Others?

This could be possibly due to inflammation. As a more inflamed tissue tends to produce more prostaglandins, it causes more severe pain. Other factors that contribute to menstrual cramps include:

  • Poor eating habits
  • Not having adequate amount of potassium and magnesium in diet
  • Lack of Exercise
  • Smoking
  • Drinking Alcohol

How Do You Combat It?

Women have to go through a lot in general, so there is no chance these creepy cramps would spare us but we know how to fight it! So, let’s find out some easy and effective ways to combat menstrual cramps.

  1. Putting a heating pad on your belly or lower back.
  2. Rubbing Lavender oil on your belly helps relieve period pain.
  3. Ginger tea: Boil a piece of ginger in 250 ml water, simmer for 4-5 minutes and drink whenever required.
  4. Carom seeds: Having 1 tbsp. of carom seeds by boiling them in a glass of water may ease menstrual cramps.
  5. Eat potassium and magnesium rich foods like Bananas, oranges, grapefruit, raisins, dates, mushrooms, cucumbers, potatoes, sweet potatoes and dark chocolate (70% or more), nuts, legumes, tofu, seeds, wholegrains, green leafy vegetables respectively.
  6. Use yoga: Some simple yoga poses to try out are Head to Knee forward bend, bound angle pose, Child’s pose and inverted leg pose.
  7. Listen to good music that changes your mood or take a walk in nature or talk to your friends and family members. This will keep you engaged and diverted so you may not feel too much pain.

Gopalkala Recipe – A Perfect Evening Snack

Gopalkala RecipeWe always learn a lot from our traditions. It’s not only stories, but also practical implementations that we can do in our day to day life. There’s so much to learn from mythology and history alike. For instance, we have grown up listening to stories of Lord Krishna. We all know that Lord Krishna was brought up in Gokul, where there was plenty of milk & milk products. He was considered notorious for stealing milk, butter, and curd in his childhood. In one of the folklores, it’s mentioned that Lord Krishna used to gather all the food stuff brought by his fellows and mix it up. This gave birth to the dish – Gopalkala (Dahikala) which has different foods mixed up with curd.

We celebrate Janmashtami –Lord Krishna’s birthday, the way Lord Krishna celebrated it; With all the goodies that he liked, prepared at home. Gopalkala or Dahikala is made and given in offering to him on this occasion and then served to the rest of the people.

On the occasion of Janmashtami, let’s look at a Gopalkala Recipe. It’s easy to prepare and doesn’t involve cooking. At the same time, it’s nutritious & healthy. One can have it as an evening snack, mid meal or even as a pre-workout meal! You can even give this dish to your kids in their school tiffin box as well.

What You Will Need

  • Thick Poha or rice flakes – 1 bowl
  • Fresh curd – 1 bowl
  • Chopped Cucumber- ½ bowl
  • Groundnuts – ¼ bowl
  • Roasted chick pea – ¼ bowl
  • Pomegranate – ¼ bowl
  • Grated coconut/ Coconut pieces – ¼ bowl
  • Grated ginger – 1 tsp
  • Chopped Green Chillies – 1-2 tsp
  • Chopped coriander – 1-2 tsp
  • Sugar – 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste

How To Prepare

  1. Wash the rice flakes in a sieve and keep it aside for 5 mins. Let it get soaked
  2. In 1 big bowl, beat the curd with sugar, salt, ginger, green chillies & coconut pieces
  3. Add rice flakes in this bowl. Let it soak for another 5 mins
  4. Add cucumber, groundnuts, roasted chick pea and pomegranate seeds
  5. Mix well & top it with coriander

Nutritional Value

It’s a healthy filling snack, nutritionally well balanced.

  • Poha or rice flakes contribute to the carbohydrate content
  • Curd, groundnuts and roasted chick pea make up for the protein content
  • Curd is an excellent probiotic that is extremely good for gut health and digestion
  • While the Gopalkala recipe doesn’t require oil or ghee, it has healthy fats from groundnut (MUFA) & coconut.
  • It completes your salads & fruits quota too through cucumber & pomegranate. So don’t worry about the fiber, vitamins and antioxidants!

Worried about Poha being a rice product and its GI (Glycemic Index)? Please don’t! The protein, fats and fiber in it will bring down the GI. So what are you waiting for? Don’t just eat it as an offering to God but include it in your daily meals.

Healthy Eating: Hariyali Soya Tikka

hariyali soya tikkaIdeally, tikkas are made with paneer or potatoes but in this alternate recipe, we’ll be using soya chunks. This Hariyali Soya Tikka recipe is low-fat and packs quite the protein punch! You can enjoy it as an evening snack or a main meal! 

What You Will Need 

  • Soya chunks- 1 cup
  • Hung curd – 1 cup
  • Onion (diced into cubes) – 1 cup
  • Tomato (diced into cubes) – 1 cup
  • Capsicum (diced into cubes) – 1 cup
  • Besan (gram flour) – 1 tbsp
  • Ginger garlic paste- 1 tbsp
  • Oil- 1 tsp
  • Coriander – ½ cup
  • Mint – ½ cup
  • Lemon juice – 1 tsp
  • Green chilli – 2
  • Salt as per taste
  • Turmeric – 1 tsp
  • Red chilli powder – 1 tbsp
  • Chat masala – ½ tsp
  • Jeera powder – 1tsp
  • Garam masala powder – 1 tsp
  • Kasuri methi – ½ tsp

How To Prepare:

  1. Heat a pan and dry roast 2 tsp of gram flour for 1-2 min. Once the color changes a bit, slide the flour into a small bowl and allow it to cool.
  2. In a pan add oil and salt, once the water starts boiling add the soya chunks and cook for 10 min. Once done strain the chunks. After it cools press them between 2 palms and remove all the excess water. Keep the pressed chunks aside.
  3. Now for the green paste, take a mixer jar, add in coriander, mint and green chillies. Make a fine paste of it.
  4. Take a mixing bowl, and let us prepare the marinade. Add hung curd, gram flour, salt, green paste and all other spices. Give it a nice stir and enjoy the lovely green color.
  5. Time to add in our soya chunks, capsicum, tomato and onions. Give this a gentle mix.
  6. Once done, keep the bowl in the fridge to rest for 30-40 min, so the masalas can stick well to soya chunks and veggies.
  7. Keep a tawa on medium flame. Take a skewer and add soya chunks, capsicum, onion and tomatoes one by one, and repeat the process for all skewers.
  8. Grease the tawa with some oil, and put the skewers on tawa. After it is golden brown on one side, flip it over to cook on all sides.
  9. Our delicious hariyali soya tikkas are ready on a tawa without the grill or BBQ. Serve it hot with salad and green chutney.

Note: If you do not have skewers you can use toothpicks or just roast this on tawa directly. You can also use paneer or tofu instead of soya.
