GOQii Doctor Consultations: All You Need to Know!

GOQii DoctorWouldn’t it be great to have a doctor assess your health or medical conditions online? Imagine having an online consultation with a doctor who is familiar with your issues, knows your medical history and is proficient enough to tackle the issues with simple lifestyle changes. You don’t have to look far! All you need to do is download the GOQii app and subscribe to get your own GOQii Doctor!

How Does It Work?

With the GOQii Doctor, users can have an online consultation. Before you begin with the consultation, an appointment is scheduled. GOQii Doctors acquaint themselves with the patient’s history, medical conditions and current lifestyle. Patients can also share their blood reports.

With this info, the consult with patients becomes thorough, which further promotes follow-ups and new appointments. After detailed research, if the issue is in the patient’s lifestyle, the GOQii Doctor can suggest lifestyle changes that will help. A GOQii Doctor will not prescribe medicines online.

What Can the GOQii Doctor Help With?

A GOQii Doctor can help you with a myriad of disorders. The issues handled by a GOQii Doctor fall in the following categories:

  • General Medicine: fever, cough, cold, weakness, fatigue, headache, anaemia, etc.
  • Lifestyle Medicine: weight management, stamina and immunity building, sleep issues, etc.
  • Endocrinology: Diabetes, thyroid, PCOD, vitamin D deficiency, osteoporosis, etc.
  • Orthopaedics: Joint pains, knee/back pain, exercise-induced injuries, spondylitis, etc.
  • Mental Health: Depression, anxiety, anger management, OCD, etc.
  • Cardiovascular: Heart care, high cholesterol, hypertension, etc.
  • Gastroenterology: Gut care, acidity, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, GERD, etc.
  • Dermatology: Skincare, acne, hair fall, rashes, psoriasis, eczema, etc.
  • Gynaecology: Women’s health, pregnancy, fibroids, menses, menopause, etc.
  • Ophthalmology: Eye health, blurring of vision, retinopathy, etc.
  • Other cases like piles, kidney stones, prostatomegaly, oral care, etc.

According to the IndiaFit Report, there has been an increase in the number of consultations for sexual health. As consults happen over a call, it is much easier for people to clarify their doubts on an issue considered a taboo otherwise.

Chronic disorders such as diabetes, high cholesterol, thyroid and gut issues like acidity, constipation are the most sought after in the list of appointments. Poor and unhealthy lifestyle is the reason for these disorders and closely inspecting and making small alterations in the patient’s routine helps in providing long term benefits.

Do you agree that online consultation is the need of the hour? Want to know what else a GOQii Doctor can do for you? Drop us a message in the comments below!

Walk with a Doc – Reimagining Healthcare between doctors and their communities

Walk with a DocWalking is considered one of the best and simplest forms of exercise which can be done by all. Patients with chronic ailments such as heart disease, diabetes, cholesterol, hypertension etc., are recommended to walk as a form of exercise daily. Keeping in line with this, GOQii, the Health and Lifestyle start-up is launching a 10-year-old international movement called ‘Walk with a Doc’ (WWAD), a unique physician-led walking program focusing on encouraging physical activity among patients.

Dr Aashish Contractor, widely recognised as the pioneer of cardiac rehabilitation is kick-starting the first edition of WWAD in Mumbai on June 18, 2017, from NCPA at 7 am. Apart from GOQii, Dr Contractor is also supported in this initiative by his hospital Sir H N Reliance Foundation Hospital where he is currently, the head of Department of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine. He is also the author of the book ‘The Heart Truth’.

The 40-minute long walk will start at 7 am from NCPA and cover a distance of 5 KMs on Marine Drive and end at NCPA at 8 am. This walk will be followed by a summation by Dr Contractor.

Each local walk will be hosted by a doctor, in addition to the health benefits that everyone enjoys just by walking, the doctors also get a chance to talk their patients while they walk. The movement first started in the United States 10- years ago by Dr David Sabgir, a Mount Carmel Cardiologist from Ohio.

In the US Dr Sabgir started this movement based on his own learnings from observing patients in his clinic for over a decade. As a cardiologist, he thought he was doing everything he could to help his patients. He spent extra time during appointments, listening to their issues and giving advice on how to live a healthier life. But in his own words “In the end, I just wasn’t successful at encouraging them to get out there and get physically active.”

WWAD Standee

Heart disease is the number one killer in America and India is no different. Recently, in an interview with GOQii, Dr Contarctor says, “Heart Disease is the leading cause of death among men and women worldwide and even in India”. Both Dr Sabgir and Dr Contractor believe that 80% of cardiovascular disease is preventable with more exercise and simple lifestyle changes.

Yet, Sabgir found that only five percent of his patients were getting the recommended 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity. He was frustrated, so one day he asked a few patients to meet him and his family in the park to take a walk. That was the first Walk in 2005 where 101 people showed up. After ten years, there are 301 WWAD chapters spread across 44 states in the USA averaging 25 walkers per walk; which are done weekly / bi-weekly/ monthly by doctors.

“We are ecstatic that you are starting Walk with a Doc in India. We have been thrilled and humbled to see WWAD transform hundreds of new communities in the United States. The opportunity to collaborate with the great physicians of India is a tremendous honour that we will never take for granted,” says Dr Sabgir.

Talking about kick-starting the first walk in Mumbai, India, Dr Contractor says, “I advise my patients to instil the habit of healthy living, however, very few get motivated on their own. WWAD is a good concept and removes that barrier and makes healthy living a routine and fun. Therefore, when GOQii & WWAD- India chapter approached me to host the first edition of WWAD, I agreed. I have been regularly walking and running with my patients, WWAD is a new platform to do the same. I hope that through this program we will be able to inculcate healthy living as part of daily routine of the people.”

From GOQii’s perspective, the health start-up has been advocating healthy living and preventive healthcare. “We felt that this collaboration will compliment us in our vision to create a healthier society. I am thankful to Dr Contractor who agreed to spearhead the first edition in India,” says Vishal Gondal, Founder and CEO, GOQii Technologies Inc.

Walk with a Doc has already helped thousands commit to a healthy lifestyle in the USA and today the movement has reached 6 countries and India being the 7th.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away

apple-a-aday

One of the most popular adages is “An apple a day keeps the Doctor away”. But, on second thoughts I have always wondered why is it said so? Do we really know what makes an apple so special? Why is it that we never hear an orange or a banana a day keeps the doctor away? Does apple really have any value? Could an apple honestly help a person to maintain perfect health?

In the 19th century, a publication printed this adage saying: “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” Nearly, 150 years later, variations of this adage is still quoted. It’s unlikely that the saying would have maintained such popularity if there wasn’t some truth to it, right? With that in mind, let’s consider some of the apple’s components and their effects on our health.

Apples have properties that no other fruits have and its benefits have been proven overtime. We will be able to get the benefits of these properties individually with other fruits, but an apple combines everything and makes it simpler. It has been shown over and over that if it’s not simple, easy and fast, people won’t take care of their health.

Apples have a good claim to promote health. They contain Vitamin C, which aids the immune system. A lot of people who lack Vitamin C in their diet have poor healing, bruise easily and have bleeding gums. It can prevent both coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease because apples are rich in flavonoid. Flavonoids are also known for their antioxidant effects. Apples contain phenols, which have a double effect on cholesterol. It reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol. They prevent LDL cholesterol from turning into oxidized LDL, a very dangerous form of bad cholesterol which can be deadly.

Apple protects your brain from brain disease. This is something that many people don’t know, and when you consider that your brain makes the person you are, it gives a whole new perspective. Apple has substances called phytonutrients, and these phytonutrients prevents neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons.

We are all aware that cancer comes in several forms and in different places. Apples target multiple cancers such as colon cancer, prostate cancer and breast cancer in women. A research at the University of Nottingham Research shows that people who eat 5 apples or more per week have lower respiratory problems, including asthma.

The best thing about apples are that they are low in calories. A regular size apple has between 70-100 calories. Eating an apple when craving for candy or chocolate can make the desire disappear since Apple in itself contains sugar, but gives you only ¼ of the calories. They taste great too! Not only that, they also come in many flavours and colours. Not in a mood for a red apple? Why not get a green one. Their taste can vary greatly, but still give you all the apple benefits. Variety is an important element to maintain your health.

An Apple can also prevent tooth decay. Tooth decay is an infection that seriously damages the structure of your teeth, which is caused primarily because of bacteria. The juice of the apples has properties that can kill up to 80% of bacteria. So there you go, ‘an apple a day also keeps the dentist away too’!

With all these benefits that Apples bring with it I would say an Apple a day does not just keep the doctor away but does a Lot More Than That!
