Simple Tips to Keep Your Holidays Healthy and Fun

keep holidays healthy

The holiday season is upon us! These next few months have festivals after festivals and are also a time when most people choose to get married. With multiple weddings, get-togethers, picnics, outings or even vacations, how does one resist eating and not skip a workout? You don’t essentially need to be a monk. You can still enjoy and keep your holidays healthy!

Here are some simple tips to help you keep your holidays healthy as well as have some fun at the same time!

On a Road Trip

  • Pack some homemade stuff to eat on the way. Have sandwiches made with multi-grain breads or whole wheat breads, plain or vegetable Idlis, homemade cookies, cupcakes for kids, veg upma, boiled sprouts salad, chickpeas and so on.
  • Take a variety of seasonal or your favorite fruits. Carry nuts as well to curb hunger pangs that usually arise out of boredom.
  • Avoid roadside high-calorie, unhealthy foods! They are unhealthy and sometimes even unhygienic depending on where you eat from. Eating these in moderation also won’t help!
  • Keep yourself well hydrated. Keep drinking plain water. Carry juicy fruits such as watermelon, litchi or even better – coconut water or lemon juice.
  • Avoid aerated, sugary drinks and caffeinated energy drinks as they are high in calories and provide zero nutritional value. They will dehydrate your body making you feel thirstier.

On a Long Vacation Away From Home

Again, with a few careful steps, you will be able to keep your holidays healthy and indulge as much as you want!

  • Moderation is key! While in a new city, you definitely want to try the new and unique delicacies the place has to offer you. Eat them all! Just choose wisely and maintain portion control. You can achieve this by leaving the hotel with a filling and healthy breakfast.
  • Eat fruits and healthy drinks which will keep you full when you travel/explore. Avoid overstuffing yourself.
  • While sightseeing, prefer walking or cycling wherever you can. It is a fun way to burn calories and cover more ground.

 While Attending Parties

  • As a rule of thumb, don’t go too hungry or too full! Too hungry will make you overeat and too full will not allow you to savour the taste of all the delicacies that might be there!
  • Just eat some healthy snacks before leaving. Something like a salad, sandwich or fruit.
  • Don’t eat while meeting and talking to other guests. You will lose track of the food you’re eating. Finish your conversations and then eat carefully and mindfully!
  • Opt for healthier alternatives like green salad over a Russian salad or grilled items over fried items or fruit desserts over rich, creamy desserts.

Remember not to skip exercising. You can do a light workout when you wake up or when you get the time. Keep a resistance band handy as there are many exercises you can perform using one. To know workout routines that don’t need equipment or for resistance band workouts, check out videos by expert coaches on GOQii Play within the GOQii App. You can even reach out to your personal GOQii Coach for tips!

Play it safe and play it wisely! If you keep everything in moderation and stick to healthy alternatives and exercise, you can keep your holidays healthy and be in for an amusing, guilt-free holiday!

Minimalist Living – Why Less is More!

minimalist living

“If you don’t know what you want, you end up with a lot you don’t,” – Well, if you have read Chuck Palahniuk’s masterpiece Fight Club, you’ll be familiar with this quote. It is funny how a work of fiction can hold so much relevance in the world we live in and maybe Tyler Durden, the film’s protagonist, was right when he said, “The things you own, end up owning you.”

How many times have you browsed through an online shopping portal and thought, “Oh! I might need a new phone”, “Wow! This is on discount. I should get this,” or just bought something that you don’t really need and it just sits on a shelf till you forget about it? No one would blame you. We’re living in the peak of consumerism where everything you need and don’t need is just a finger tap away.

Does happiness really exist in a big home with perfect flooring and matching drapes? Does it exist it a fancy car, smart electronic devices, furniture, fashionable clothes, jewellery, footwear et al? What if the answer was in the opposite direction?

When it comes to living a wholesome, healthy and holistic lifestyle, anything which is in excess is bad! Be it food, exercise, thoughts and even the things we surround ourselves with. One of the best ways to achieve good mental health is to declutter and take up minimalist living.

What is Minimalism?

Minimalism, in essence, is living with less. The whole idea is to live a life based on experiences rather than worldly possessions. This includes decluttering or minimum usage of things such as furniture, clothes, accessories, etc. It is a personal change one makes to add value to their life. You can choose what is important to you and throw away things which are not.

What are the Benefits of Minimalist Living?

Minimalist Living does involve sacrificing things you think you might need. Not necessarily the best life choice for hoarders and might seem a bit unnecessary but it needs to be done! Trust me, the pros most definitely outweigh the cons!

For instance, decluttering and reducing the number of things you own helps you focus only on the important things in life. With less distractions, you can pay attention to things that require it. This does not mean you throw out things important to you. Keep the things you really need and thrown away the things you don’t.

More space and less junk will definitely help you be more productive. A clean and organized house definitely reduces a lot of stress! More so, you have a lot less financial burdens and avoid unnecessary expenses.

 How Do You Do It?

Let’s get started! Observe your home and your belongings. Make a list of things which you have not used in a year or two. There are less chances you will need it again so get rid of it.

Here, I am sharing a sample list to help you out:

  • Unused and worn out clothes, shoes, socks, etc.
  • Excess clutter in wallet
  • Unwanted receipts, bills, papers, books, manuals, etc.
  • Old electronics/ wires/ chargers/ batteries
  • Unused and expired beauty products and medication
  • Unused stationery that doesn’t work
  • Unused cleaning products
  • Broken or unused furniture
  • Damaged plastic containers
  • Kitchen gadgets and appliances you don’t use
  • Extra towel/ cushions/ scarf/ gloves
  • Junk drawer
  • Extra bags
  • Anything that you don’t know the purpose of

Remove all of it from your home. You can donate the things you don’t need to somebody who might have use for it or just resell, recycle or repurpose it.

You’re all done! Does it feel good?

Furthermore, you can also make additional changes to keep this habit going by thinking before you buy. Don’t purchase it just because you might need it in the future or because it is on sale. Buy only when you need. Regularly keep a check and see if you’re cluttering again.

In the next article, we will explore the wonderful benefits that minimalism offers and how it can help your health and life!

Stay tuned and #BeTheForce!

8 Home Remedies For Dry Cough

remedies for dry coughWith the increasing pollution levels, exposure to chemicals, or the unpleasant viral & flu, we wouldn’t be particularly surprised if you were looking for home remedies for dry cough. A dry cough is a nonproductive cough that doesn’t produce phlegm or mucus.

Dry cough is generally caused by viral infections and allergies. It is very necessary to consult a doctor to find the underlying cause of cough. Along with prescribed medications and treatment, you can also try a couple of home remedies to find relief.

1. Turmeric Milk

Turmeric Milk or Haldi ka Doodh, as it is popularly known in India, is one of the oldest and most trusted home remedies for dry cough. Turmeric is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, which helps in treating infections. Also known as Golden Milk in the west, it is easy to prepare and highly effective. Drink a cup before going to bed to see the best results!

2. Honey Tea

Honey is an important ingredient for many different home remedies. It is well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties that help ease the throat. You can use honey in various ways, like adding a teaspoon in warm milk or water. You can also just have a spoonful before going to bed.

3. Masala Chai

Masala Chai or Spiced Tea is one of the easily available home remedies for dry cough especially in Indian house setups. Apart from soothing the irritation in the throat, the antioxidant quality of cardamom and cloves also help release the toxic and cough-triggering effects of pollution and dust particles. Just add black pepper, cinnamon powder, cardamom and cloves while preparing tea and sip while hot!

4. Ginger

Ginger eases a dry or asthmatic cough, as it has anti-inflammatory properties. It also relieves nausea and pain. Prepare a soothing ginger tea by adding 20–40g of fresh ginger slices to a cup of boiling water. Allow to steep for a few minutes before sipping. Add honey or lemon juice to improve the taste and further soothe a cough.

5. Lukewarm Salt-Water Gargle

Gargling is the most common home remedy for dry cough. For relief from dry cough, try gargling with lukewarm salt-water. This soothes the throat by adding moisture to it. Add half a teaspoon of salt to a cup of lukewarm water till it dissolves completely. Let the mixture sit at the back of the throat for a few seconds before spitting it out. Gargle with salt-water three times a day until the cough improves.

6. Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil has natural healing energy which makes it helpful in relieving dry coughs. Use eucalyptus oil to decongest your throat. This oil not only promotes vitality but also helps in treating the infection. Add eucalyptus oil to a cotton cloth piece and keep it near your nose and mouth. The other way to inhale this is to add 2-3 drops to hot water and inhale the steam.

7. Bromelain

Bromelain is an enzyme that comes from pineapples. Bromelain has anti-inflammatory properties and may also have mucolytic properties. This means that it can break down mucus and remove it from the body. Drink pineapple juice daily to reduce mucus in the throat and suppress coughing.

8. Warm liquids to Find Relief from Dry Cough

Staying hydrated is important when you’re down with dry cough. Warm liquids reduce the symptoms of a sore throat and cough and thus, provide immediate relief from dry cough.

Hot beverages that may be helpful include:

  • Clear broths
  • Herbal teas
  • Decaffeinated black tea
  • Warm water

If you haven’t noticed any improvement in your dry cough even after 7 days, it is necessary that you consult your doctor. Home remedies for dry cough can be an added measure but not a permanent solution for a persistent cough.

We hope these home remedies for dry cough help you find relief! Is there a personal home remedy that works for you? Share it with us in the comments below!
