Probiotics & Atopic Dermatitis

Are bacteria and microbes always bad and harmful

Bacteria and microbes often get a bad rap, but the truth is, they are not always harmful. In fact, many bacteria and microbes play essential roles in maintaining our health and the environment. While some can cause diseases and infections, the vast majority are considered good and helpful for our body. These good ones are living microbes that are part of our intestine’s normal microbial flora, commonly known as probiotics.

Did you know that our gut is home to millions of microbes that play a crucial role in regulating inflammation and promoting good gut health? These beneficial microbes, or probiotics, aid in timely digestion and excretion, facilitate the intestinal absorption of nutrients, and protect our gut from harmful microbes. Regular intake of probiotics, whether through natural foods like curd or yogurt or as oral supplements, supports healthy skin and gut health.

But are probiotics related to AD? Can they help treat AD?

It is important to understand that probiotics help control the body’s immune response and inflammation, thereby regulating the release of inflammatory factors that aggravate AD. By managing inflammation, probiotics can help reduce the redness and inflammation associated with the disease. Moreover, probiotics not only limit inflammation but also help prevent flares in AD. Therefore, it can be concluded that probiotics promote good gut health, which in turn helps keep inflammation at bay, making them beneficial for managing AD.

So inclusion of probiotics in our daily routine can indeed be life changing!

Top 5 Foods To Fight Wrinkles And Premature Aging

We all want healthy and glowing skin but do you know that your skin reflects what you eat? Healthy skin needs nutrients, a healthy diet, enough water and good sleep. When these aspects are balanced, it shows on our skin. Wrinkles are a sign of ageing. We can’t stop or avoid it but with healthy food and lifestyle, we can delay it. When it comes to premature aging or wrinkles, it happens due to Sun damage and loss of collagen and elastin. These two proteins take care of our skin and keep it healthy, young and firm.

When UV rays hit our skin, it reduces the production of collagen and elastin. It increases the production of free radicals and premature aging. As we age, the skin starts losing its firmness and elasticity. Other factors that contribute to the process are pollution, smoking, stress, dehydration, lack of sleep and unhealthy food habits.

Which Foods Help Fight Wrinkles and Premature Aging?

  1. Avocado: is a fruit with healthy fats. It has fiber and many nutrients like Folate, Magnesium, Potassium, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Niacin (Vitamin B3), Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6), Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Vitamin K. Vitamin E aids skin nourishment, reduces scars and fights free radicals. Avocado is high in the antioxidant glutathione, which helps the body to detoxify and keeps skin clear of acne and wrinkles.
  2. Berries: All the berries are extremely rich in antioxidants, are a good source of Fiber, Vitamin C, Manganese, Vitamin K1, Copper and Folate. Those are rich in Flavonoids, Vitamins and Polyphenol. So berries are perfect food to fight wrinkles and fine lines. Berries not only help in reducing wrinkles but also help in the regeneration of new skin cells. Add berries to your breakfast or morning smoothies.
  3. Buckwheat: It is gluten free, rich in fiber, Iron, provides B1, is a rich source of Magnesium and Calcium, Folate, helps in heart health and controls blood sugar levels and also reduces the signs of premature aging. It has Bioflavonoid Rutin which helps to maintain the production of collagen in the skin and encourage the body’s utilization of Vitamin C.
  4. Papaya: is rich in a variety of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals like Vitamin A, C, K and E, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Vitamin B. These help to improve skin elasticity and minimize the fine lines and wrinkles. Papaya is rich in the enzyme papain and chymopapain which helps to reduce inflammation. It helps to reduce acne by removing dead skin cells, and remove damaged keratin which can build up on the skin and form small bumps.
  5. Sweet Potatoes: are rich in Vitamin A, B, C, D, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Thiamine, Zinc. It has the antioxidant beta-carotene which is converted into Vitamin A and helps in restoring skin elasticity, prompts skin cell turnover, which means healthy glowing skin. The Vitamin C and E in it helps in protection of skin from free radicals and keeps complexion radiant. Both the Vitamins are crucial to keep skin healthy, glowing and supple. Vitamin C boosts collagen and promotes tightening of skin.

Above are the few foods which help protect our skin from wrinkles and premature aging. In addition to including these foods to your diet, make sure that you have healthy fats, a variety of veggies and fruits, especially different colour veggies and fruits. Keep yourself well hydrated, do regular exercise, learn to manage stress and sleep well.

Reduce the consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee, preserved canned food and processed food. Our body does not have a voice but it talks to us through signs and symptoms, so pay attention to the health of the skin to be healthy and fit. With good food habits, healthy lifestyle, proper hydration, good sleep and stress management we can turn the clock on our skin to look 10 years younger.

6 Lifestyle Changes For Acne-Free Skin

acne-free skinWe all yearn for clear, glowing, blemish-free skin! There’s no denying that smooth skin has mass appeal. If smooth skin were the protagonist of your story, acne would certainly be the formidable foe!

Acne is basically a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes spots and pimples. It can lead to redness and dull skin. Risk factors include genetics, menstrual cycle, stress, anxiety, humid climate, using oil-based makeup, out of home foods, etc.

Once developed, acne requires a lot of patience to fade away. Hence, you need to be religious towards the efforts.

Make smooth skin a reality with these 5 lifestyle changes which can help you reduce or prevent acne!

No Refined Carbs & Sugar

Bid alcohol, soft drinks, desserts, bread, ice-cream, sugar, maida, etc. a good farewell! As they have a high glycemic index, it can lead to high blood sugar and high insulin levels. This might result in inflammation, which is one of the prime causes of acne. High sugar intake along with acne can lead to dark circles, loose skin, and wrinkles, etc. So go low on sugar.

Drink More Water

Skin cells require water to function properly. According to research, acne is more likely to develop when your system has more toxins. Water helps flush these toxins out. Though water is not a miracle cure but it definitely helps in fighting acne.

Physical Activity

Exercise boosts blood circulation and promotes sweating, which helps the body push impurities out of the pores, reducing acne. Physical activity helps us reduce stress levels, which inturn aids acne prevention. Just make sure you clean up before and after a workout.

Get Quality Sleep

Do you wake up fresh and energetic in the morning? If you don’t get good, restorative sleep, your body might not feel rested. This could start the cortisol surge, which can put you at risk for more acne. Make sleep your priority and give your body the rest it needs and your acne a chance to heal.

Eat Your Colors

Yes! Eat all the colourful fruits and vegetables. They help us improve vitamin levels and antioxidant intake which keeps the skin clear. Eat dark leafy greens, pumpkin, carrots, beetroot, berries, papaya, etc. on a daily basis.

Eat Healthy Fats

Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are required to keep your skin healthy. They help prevent skin dryness and help you maintain healthy and hydrated skin. Healthy fats are the building blocks of cell membranes. Hence, add walnuts, fish oil, flax seeds, avocado, sunflower seeds, etc. to your diet.

Some handy tips for good skin:

  • Wash your hands once you wake up before touching the face
  • Use fresh towels and handkerchiefs daily
  • Always remove your makeup completely
  • Clean your phone on a regular basis
  • Do not sleep without washing your face

Know Your Fats – Oils Benefits

All that we are aware of fats and oils is their weight gain ability. But, did you know that these fats and oils have many benefits too? Recommended dietary allowance (RDA) also says 20-30% of the whole diet should come from fat. Many oils have great taste due to their fortification. For instance Olive oil pairs very well with salads.

Let’s read more benefits:

  • Brain development: Fat provides the structural components not only of cell membranes in the brain but also of myelin, the fatty insulating sheath that surrounds each nerve fiber, enabling it to carry messages faster. Many pregnant women are asked to consume oil on a slightly higher side for the brain development of the child.
  • Vitamins absorptions: Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K are absorbed by the intestines to provide vitamins to the body.
  • Healthier skin: Right amount of fat intake decreases the chances of skin deficiencies like dry, flaky skin etc. It gives the skin a shining and rounded appeal. The layer of fat below the first layer of the skin provides insulation to help regulate body temperature.
  • Healthy cells: Fats acts as a vital part of all the membrane. Fat surrounds each cell of the body. Without a healthy fat, cell membrane will not be able to function the right way.
  • Taste: Besides being a nutritious energy source, fat adds to the appealing taste, texture, and appearance of food.
  • Cushion for organs: Many of the vital organs, especially the kidneys, heart, and intestines are cushioned by fat that helps protect them from injury and hold them in place.
  • Hormone manufacture: Fat helps in the secretion of hormones like prostaglandins, hormone-like substances that regulate many of the body’s functions. Fats also regulates the production of sex hormones. But, fat more than RDA if present will also hinder secretion of sex hormones. One should be in their ideal body weight and consume just the right amount of oil and match their ideal body weight (IBW).  Teenage girls who look lean before their puberty will put on weight from the assistance of fat cell to sex hormones.

At GOQii we advise on healthy eating and leading a healthy lifestyle.
