Simple Ways to Overcome Depression

Overcome DepressionMost of us tend to feel low when things don’t work in our favor. At times, we give a 100% to a task expecting something good in return. When these expectations aren’t met, we succumb to negative thoughts and depression.

Depression drains you of energy and hope. At times, it makes you feel helpless. It makes any task all the more difficult. Depression becomes a problem when it fails to pass and we don’t fight back. Feeling low is a part and parcel of life and is completely natural. But if this feeling intensifies and stretches over weeks or months, it could become problematic.

Are You Really Depressed?

It is important to identify whether we are really depressed or we are just upset. It is easy to work on it once you know for sure. If we are upset, it is just a matter of time and everything is normal. If we are in depression, the sinking feeling of helplessness, loneliness and other negative feelings can go on for weeks or months with no end in sight. Depression is unhealthy for your mind and body but you can fight it!

Simple Ways To Overcome Depression

  • Get Into a Routine: If you feel depressed, have a routine and follow it regularly
  • Start Small & Stay Focused: If you feel the work you are doing is too much, break it into small tasks. For instance, if you are unable to walk 10km at a stretch, start with 1 km and gradually increase it. Eventually, you will be able to complete 10km at a stretch
  • Talk to Your Friends: Talk to a friend you trust. You will feel relaxed and your thought process will change
  • Sleep: Depression leads to issues with sleep. We should aim for at least 8 hours of sound sleep
  • Eat Healthy: There is no diet that can fix depression. It is better to keep an eye on what we eat. If Depression makes you feel like overeating, then keep portion control in mind
  • Challenge Negative Thoughts: To overcome depression, a lot of work is mental. Change the way you think. We tend to leap to the worst possible conclusions when depressed. The next time you are feeling terrible about yourself, use logic as a natural depression treatment. Ask yourself why you are feeling this way? Is this really true? Can you do anything about it? Is it possible to let go? It takes practice to clear your mind, but in time, you can beat back those negative thoughts before they get out of control
  • Exercise: It temporarily boosts endorphins and makes you feel good. It may also have long-term benefits for people with depression. Regular exercise seems to encourage the brain to rewire itself in positive ways

The solution to a depression-free life is to use all the tools you can to get better. If you feel that your depression is getting worse, seek professional help. Needing additional help doesn’t mean you are weak, it is the most practical solution. It is completely possible to get lost in negative thoughts. Just remember that depression can be treated and you can feel better!

SWEET POTATO – Best Workout Meal

sweet-potato

You must have heard of protein shakes and eggs as good work out meals. But, have you heard of Sweet Potatoes as a workout meal?

Well, the Sweet potato is a large, starchy, sweet tasting tuberous root vegetable which is usually consumed by people only during fast.  But, apart from having it as a fasting food, the other best time to consume sweet potato is either before or after your regular ‘moderate to intense’ workouts.

Referring to my previous blog on “Pre and Post Workout meals” where I mentioned the importance of having carbohydrates before your workout to keep you energetic throughout the exercise regime and post workout to replenish the depleted stores and to help the recovery process faster, SWEET POTATO is one of the best choices. One should have approximately 100 gms of boiled sweet potatoes.

How does it work?

Sweet potatoes have natural sugar and complex carbohydrates which are slowly released into the bloodstream, helping to ensure a balanced and regular source of energy without sudden blood sugar spikes. When you consume them before a workout, it gives you a slow and steady form of energy and hence keep’s you energetic throughout the workout. Post workout sweet Potatoes help to replenish the glycogen stores which are lost during the workout.

Also, there are lots of water-soluble nutrients and electrolytes which are lost during your workouts. To replenish them, SWEET POTATO is the best choice once again. It is a treasure trove of vitamins and minerals. Let us have a look at all of them:

Magnesium:  It is called a relaxation and anti-stress mineral. This clearly says that grab on the sweet potato to relieve stress (mental or physical).

Potassium: Helps in relaxing muscle contractions, reducing swellings and controlling kidney activities.

Vitamin B 6: Helps maintain healthy brain and normal nerve function. It also helps in forming red blood cell.

Vitamin C (powerful healer): This vitamin not only helps to ward off cold and flu viruses but also plays a crucial role in bone and tooth formation, digestion and blood cell formation. Helps wound healing, produces collagen which helps maintain skin’s elasticity thus keeping you young and beautiful.

Vitamin A (a powerful antioxidant): Keep’s your eyesight perfect and keeps your immune system boosted to fight against any diseases.

Vitamin D: It is crucial to maintaining your overall health as it is critical for the immune system. It plays an important role in keeping our energy levels boosted, controls mood swings and helps to build healthy bones, heart, nerves, skin and teeth and also it supports the thyroid gland to function effectively.

Iron: Necessary for red and white blood cell production

Apart from using it as the best workout food, sweet potato serves as a great choice for people who are trying to lose weight. Isn’t that great? Let’s look into it.

  • Sweet potato is high on fibre. Fibre is bulky and hence will occupy a lot of space in your stomach making you feel full for a long period of time, thus preventing one from overeating. i.e. You won’t feel hungry for a long time.
  • Sweet potato has high water content so just like fibre; water takes up a lot of room in your stomach making you feel full and will prevent overeating and snacking between meals. This will help both in your weight loss goals and will also help you prevent the weight from coming back on.
  • Lastly, it is low on calories, so people keeping a watch on calories can just go for it.

To conclude, include sweet potatoes in your routine and not only during the fast as it is one of the best workout meals and also helps with weight loss.  If sweet potato is eaten along with its skin, which is an excellent source of insoluble fibre, it may prevent constipation and diverticulitis. It also contains soluble fibre which may help control cholesterol.

Why Resistance Training Matters More Than Ever on GLP-1 Therapy

Starting GLP-1 therapy can feel like a breakthrough. After years of battling weight, countless diets, and the exhausting cycle of losing and regaining weight, medications like semaglutide and liraglutide often offer something many people have never experienced before: a sense of control. Hunger fades, cravings quieten, and for once, weight starts to come down steadily. It’s not an exaggeration to say it can feel life-changing.

But here’s something most people aren’t told when they start: while the kilos may be dropping, not all that weight loss is necessarily fat. You could also be losing something your body desperately needs muscle. And this is where resistance training becomes a game-changer.

So, What’s Happening When You’re on GLP-1 Medications?

These drugs work by slowing digestion and helping you feel fuller for longer, which naturally leads to eating less. This calorie deficit drives the weight loss. But here’s the catch: when your body receives fewer calories, it doesn’t always discriminate. Yes, it burns fat but unless you’re actively working to protect it, your body may also start breaking down lean muscle for energy.

And that’s a problem worth paying attention to. Losing muscle is bad news for your metabolism, your strength, and your long-term health.

Why You Must Focus on Muscle While Losing Fat

Muscle is metabolically active tissue. Simply put:

  • It helps you burn more calories, even at rest
  • It supports posture, mobility, and everyday function
  • It protects against injury as you age
  • It’s essential for healthy ageing and longevity

When you lose weight with GLP-1 medications without strength training, your body may sacrifice muscle as well as fat. Over time, this can slow your metabolism making further weight loss harder and weight maintenance even tougher.

What Is Resistance Training?

Resistance training is all about giving your muscles a reason to stay. Every time you challenge them with weights, bands, or just your bodyweight your body gets the message: muscle matters. It says, “Don’t burn this muscle. I need it.”

That’s why resistance training is so important, especially when you’re eating less. It helps your body burn fat while preserving lean mass. Think of it as the ideal partner to your GLP-1 medication.

But What If the Gym Isn’t Your Thing?

No worries. You don’t need fancy equipment or a gym membership to start building strength. Here’s how to integrate resistance training into your week:

  • Use your bodyweight

Squats, lunges, push-ups, and glute bridges are effective — and require no equipment.

  • Grab a resistance band

Lightweight, portable, and surprisingly powerful for full-body workouts.

  • Get creative

Use water bottles, backpacks, or heavy books in place of weights. Try bicep curls, shoulder presses, or loaded squats.

  • Keep it short
Two to three sessions a week, just 15–20 minutes each, is enough to signal your body to retain muscle.

You don’t need to train like a bodybuilder. You just need to move your muscles regularly.

Benefits of Resistance Training on GLP-1 Therapy

Here’s why strength training even at home matters during your GLP-1 journey:

  • Preserves lean muscle mass
  • Prevents metabolic slowdown
  • Improves body composition (think firm and toned, not just smaller)
  • Boosts insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control
  • Enhances mood, energy, and mental clarity

Start small. Stay consistent. Focus on progress, not perfection. With resistance training, you’re not just losing weight — you’re gaining strength and long-term resilience.

Move to Protect Your Muscles

GLP-1 medications can help you lose weight but resistance training ensures you lose fat, not strength.

So if you’re on GLP-1 therapy, remember:

  • Prioritise protein
  • Move your muscles
  • Celebrate non-scale victories

Because in the long run, preserving muscle is what will keep your metabolism strong, your body capable, and your health thriving.

More Common Reasons For Not Losing Belly Fat

More Common Reasons For Not Losing Belly FatIn a previous article, we looked at some common mistakes people make when trying to lose belly fat. Here, we’ll explore some more reasons which can make it difficult for an individual to lose that stubborn fat. As mentioned before, losing belly fat that has built up over the years is no easy feat, and certain habits can make the journey even more challenging. Let’s look at them!

Reasons Why You’re Not Losing Belly Fat

  1. Lack of Sleep: Sleep deprivation or disturbed sleep not only adds to physical and mental stress but also affects your food choices. For instance, you might end up reaching for junk food or simple carbs when you are unable to sleep well. Crucial processes for fat loss, muscle growth and recovery actually happen while you’re in a deep sleep. Now you can likely relate to why people with high-stress levels tend to gain weight over time, even when their portions are controlled. Aiming for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night is very important.
  2. Extreme Calorie Restriction or Starvation: In my practice as a dietitian, I have come across many people who starve themselves to lose weight, especially belly fat. This is one of the worst things you can do to your body. When your body finally gets food after a long period of restriction, its first instinct is to store as many calories as possible in the form of fat, conserving energy instead of burning it. Eating small, frequent meals and avoiding long periods without food can help keep your metabolism active.
  3. Consuming Fruits at Night or Directly After Meals: Most people think that eating fruit at night is healthy and light on the stomach. However, fruits are a source of natural sugars (carbohydrates) that provide energy. At night, our bodies are typically less active and our metabolism naturally slows down. Thus, unused calories are more likely to get stored as fat. Similarly, having fruit immediately after a main meal increases the overall carbohydrate load of that meal and any excess carbs can be converted into fat. It’s better to enjoy fruit as a mid-meal snack, ideally before the evening, or as a great way to start your day and kick-start your metabolism.
  4. Sweets/Desserts Straight After Meals: Sweets such as ice cream, pudding, cake or chocolates are laden with sugar. Eating them right after a meal is a bad idea, as it can contribute to more fat deposition. That doesn’t mean you should not enjoy sweets and desserts. You can enjoy them as a mid-meal snack. If you can, it’s even better to enjoy these treats during the first half of the day. If you are a person who cannot do without a sweet treat after meals, opt for a small square of dark chocolate (over 70% cocoa) or other naturally sweetened options like a date or a small nut-and-seed bar.
  5. Dehydration: Consuming too little water or having an increased intake of diuretics like coffee, some teas and fizzy drinks can contribute to dehydration. In a state of dehydration, your cells and organs cannot function at their optimal level, and your metabolism can slow down. This results in the body using less energy and unused calories are more likely to be converted into fat, often stored around the midsection. When you drink less water, toxins are not flushed out of the system efficiently, which can affect organ function and further reduce your body’s metabolic rate. Aim to drink at least 2.5–3 litres (around 85–100 fl oz) of water daily. Choosing hydrating fluids like lemon water, vegetable juices, buttermilk and coconut water over sugary, caffeinated drinks will help you hydrate and rejuvenate your cells.

While you might be making these common mistakes without realising their impact, you now have a better idea of what needs to be done! By making these small changes to your lifestyle, you can make a significant difference and work towards your health goals.
