Pedaling Towards Better Health

cycling

Embracing the pedal, cycling emerges as an unmatched ally in our quest for fitness and environmental stewardship. Ideal for the daily grind, it’s the perfect choice for those fortunate to work within a few kilometers from home.

However, finding a cycle-friendly zone can be challenging in the city’s bustling streets. Yet, cycling is an unrivalled option for maintaining fitness while contributing to a greener environment. Even if the city’s pace doesn’t always accommodate cyclists, there’s always a way to weave a 30-minute ride into your daily routine. Be it the serenity of park circuits or the quieter stretches away from the thrum of traffic, these pockets of peace offer a perfect backdrop for a daily pedal. This World Bicycle Day, let’s pledge to carve out time for cycling, ensuring we stay fit and do our bit for the planet, one ride at a time, despite the urban hustle.

Remember these essential tips for a safe ride:

  • Wear appropriate clothing, such as a t-shirt and padded shorts, and invest in a well-fitted helmet, bike reflectors, headlights, gloves, sturdy shoes, and eye protection.
  • Always wear a helmet for safety.
  • Keep to the left side of the road to allow traffic to pass.
  • Stick to well-lit paved roads, and if available, use bike paths, otherwise opt for service roads or park circuits where cycling is allowed
  • Make yourself visible with reflective clothing and use front and back lights on your bike
  • Signal your turns using arm and hand gestures
  • Keep your bike in good condition

Health Benefits of Pedaling:

Understanding the right way to sit on a bicycle is crucial before exploring its myriad health advantages. The right posture isn’t just about pedaling efficiently; it’s about keeping your body free from injury and discomfort.

Thanks to the bicycle’s design, which supports your sitting bones – the ischial tuberosities in your pelvis – cycling offers a joint-friendly exercise alternative. Unlike walking, which puts a burden on your legs, cycling spares your joints and is especially beneficial for those dealing with joint pain or the natural stiffness that comes with ageing.

Making cycling a regular part of your routine can help in warding off chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. It’s a mood enhancer and an effective way to manage weight. Aim for an hour of cycling each day to not only reduce stress but also to build muscle strength and flexibility. Plus, cycling bolsters your immune system and releases endorphins – those feel-good hormones that keep you feeling youthful and vibrant. And as a bonus, it significantly boosts your stamina.

We hope this article inspires you to embrace cycling and experience its numerous health benefits. How do you incorporate cycling into your daily routine? Share your experiences in the comments below!

11 Real Reasons Why Tobacco is Bad!

no smoking

LUNG CANCER! MOUTH CANCER! THROAT CANCER!

When we talk about smoking or chewing tobacco, the only thing that pops up is cancer. Apart from all of this, we have also heard about tobacco use causing COPD, heart disease, strokes and what not! Yet, smokers and tobacco chewers seem almost immune, if not indestructible as they continue to use tobacco day after day.

Maybe these conditions are extremes that arise after addictive, prolonged use of the substance. After all, we have all heard of that one grandpa who lived his entire life disease-free despite burning through a packet a day or that one aunt who is healthy despite smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Just because the effects aren’t immediate, doesn’t mean they are nonexistent.

While no amount of reasoning will help a tobacco user quit unless they choose to, here are some very real reasons why quitting tobacco today will be the best health move you can make!

1. Problems with Immunity

Consuming tobacco makes you more prone to infections by reducing immunity and depressing antibodies that fight infections. This results in body aches, pains and in severe cases, may result in rheumatoid arthritis.

2. Digestive Disorders

The digestive system converts food into nutrients which are supplied to various parts of your body. This ability is hindered upon tobacco consumption. A person may experience digestive issues such as heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, crohn’s disease (inflammation of the intestines) and may even form gallstones. Quitting will improve digestive health drastically!

3. Disturbed Sleep

Consuming tobacco products affects one’s sleep cycle causing sleeping disorders such as sleep apnea or wakefulness. Quitting will improve your sleep quality and reduce sleeping disorders.

4. Fertility Issues

This is a big one! Both men and women who consume tobacco may face fertility issues. Men’s sperm and Women’s egg get damaged due to the harmful chemicals present in tobacco. The DNA present in the sperm and the egg also get affected, resulting in an unhealthy baby or a baby with cleft lips or cleft palate. If you are trying to conceive, quitting 3 months prior will help a lot!

5. Eye Problems and Blindness

Did you know that tobacco consumption can cause blindness? The nicotine present in tobacco causes AMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration) where a person loses central vision making it difficult to see and read things. Cataract is also common in people who consume tobacco. The retina is also affected which results in blindness.

6. Buerger’s Disease

This disease is common in people using tobacco products. In the beginning, the arms and legs tend to become cold followed by pain in the legs, ankles and feet due to the thickening of blood vessels. In severe cases, ulcers are also noticed on the hands and feet. If infection due to the ulcers spread inside the arms and feet, doctors may advise amputation. There is no cure for this disease, and the only way to prevent this is by quitting tobacco products. Ouch!

7. It Cripples Your Sense of Smell and Taste

Tobacco consumption damages the sense of smell and the taste buds. Smell and Taste are connected to each other by a channel present at the roof of the throat to the nose. Without the sense of Smell, your food may turn tasteless. Blood vessels of Taste buds are also affected making your food less palatable. Quitting may help you enjoy your meals more!

8. Effect on Skin, Nails and Teeth

The harmful chemicals present in tobacco stain fingernails and the teeth of a user making them look yellowish. It is also an enemy of the skin as it makes you look older than your age. Quitting may help you look younger and retain the brighter side of your teeth and nails.

9. Loss of Hearing

Tobacco consumers are more likely to face hearing problems like tinnitus (ringing in ears) as nicotine results in narrowing of blood vessels present in the body. It also affects nerves  present in the inner ear and also the neurotransmitter responsible for identifying noises. This makes you more sensitive to loud noises and more prone to noise related hearing loss.

10. Baldness

Toxins present in tobacco harm hair follicles, causing hair loss. It may also damage melanin, resulting in premature greying. Quitting tobacco reduces hair damage or hair loss to a very large extent.

11. Wound Healing

Nicotine causes constriction of blood vessels. As a result, blood supply to body parts decrease and makes it difficult for a wound to heal.

Apart from these reasons, your social life can get affected too as many people find the smell of chewing tobacco and cigarette smoke very repulsive! Clear the smoke and wipe the stains of an unhealthy lifestyle to breathe the freshness of a healthy one!

TULSI – Solution to all ailments

tulsi-leavesTulsi or Basil leaves is a small light green to dark purple coloured plant, which is often seen to be grown in front off or near houses in a special pot or special small masonry structures in almost every Indian home. Whether you like keeping plants at home or not, this sacred and medicinal plant is seen in every house. It is considered sacred in India and a manifestation of goddess Tulsi, a consort of God Vishnu.

Talking about its medicinal properties, Tulsi is classified as an adaptogen: It adapts itself to whatever ailment the body is experiencing. Name any body part, beginning from your head, eyes, mouth, throat, stomach, or kidney, Tulsi has a cure for it.

Its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties make it a much talked about the herbal plant in medicine.

Let’s quickly go through some of them:

  • Head: In heating summer, by applying the paste of crushed Tulsi and Chandan will give you immediate cooling and relief from headaches.
  • Eyes:  Dark Tulsi is known to be rich in Vitamin A and hence no doubt that it helps in curing eye soreness and night blindness.
  • Mouth: Soaking Tulsi seeds in water at night and consuming it in the morning along with milk will surely give you relief from mouth ulcers. I have tried this and it has benefited me by giving immediate relief.
  • Teeth: A paste made by sun drying the tulsi leaves and mixing them with mustard oil is known to maintain dental health and gives you relief from bad mouth odour.
  •  Nose, throat, and chest: Water boiled with basil leaves and a pinch of salt should be used to gargle to get relief from a sore throat. Almost all the ayurvedic cough syrups and expectorants have tulsi as their main component, as it is known to melt the mucus giving relief to bronchitis and asthma patients.
  • Fever: A hot and tasty tulsi decoction made by adding cardamom, clove, coriander seeds, Jeshthamadh or Jashthamadh or Mulethi with a small amount of jaggery helps to bring down fever after one has drunk the decoction in small portions.
  •  Kidney: In case of renal stone the juice of basil leaves and honey, if taken regularly for 6 months will flush them via the urinary tract.

The flavonoids in tulsi leaves are believed to reduce the risk of platelets forming clots on the arterial wall, preventing coronary heart disease and heart attacks.

Tulsi juice is also beneficial in treating many of the skin infections like ringworm and other skin diseases.

Note: These are only general guidelines as a first aid. It is always better to see a doctor depending upon the intensity of the case.

Mindful Eating: Slow down and enjoy your meal – 2

Untitled-1

In my previous blog, I talked about the concept of Mindful Eating and how often we instead of being mindful become mindless. (https://goqii.com/blog/mindful-eating-the-best-habit-ever/). Mindless eating is when we overeat, eat fast, do some emotional eating while we are not really hungry and disconnect with food. The first blog summarised the fact that it is extremely important to make the ‘connect’ with your food choices. Attempt to learn or acknowledge the ingredients of the dish you are eating, which food group it belongs to, combining it in ways you can enhance (or deplete) it’s nutritional quotient, and most importantly how you truly feel having it.

Today, I am going to talk about the art of eating slow. Eating is a biologically natural and pleasurable act of nourishment.

More often than not, most of us may not even recall everything that we ate in last few hours, let alone-the sensation associated with it. That is largely because we indulge in other things most times along with eating – working, driving, reading, watching television, surfing the net, social networking or simultaneously feeding a child, a pet or an emotion.

This act of mindless eating –lack of awareness of the food we are consuming- may becontributing to the national obesity epidemic and the lifestyle diseases and disorders prevalent around.

Mindful eating is nothing but, an act of eating our food with attention. Sensing the flavours, recognizing the ingredients and enjoying the dish and thus feeling gratitude towards the meal. Following mindful eating pattern you will not only reverse your weight issues, but also fix them up for life.

chew-slowly

Eating fast is a habit in disorder. If you eat fast, you are just one step away from digestive troubles, weight gain and other metabolic dysfunctions. Here is what happens when you eat fast?

One is you skip the first step of digestion of the food, which happens when enzymes in the saliva break down the morsels when you are chewing them. This Bolus which is softened food morsel is much easier to get digested by the acids of the stomach.

Second – since you are rushing through – large chunks of undigested food is filling up your stomach – too much and too quickly. The stretch receptors of your stomach are slow acting fibres (can’t help -that is how they are made!) so when they can’t match up with the speed, the spill over happens, leading to acid reflux, burn in the chest, food regurgitation, and acid after taste in mouth.

What is supposed to be an act of pleasure turns out to be a painful experience!

Third – The delicate hormonal cross talk which happens between hunger, satiety and fullness hormones doesn’t happen that smoothly when you are gobbling down your meal, leaving one having more food but yet not satisfied.

That is why adopting slow eating as a good habit for life is necessary, to eliminate the digestive disorders, fix up weight struggles and feel satisfied with our meals, with our life.

In this article, I’ll share ways to build up your innate capability to eat slowly. As you’ll go down the pointers, pick up only one or two that you can follow easily and when you return back to this article, gradually learn more ways to practice slow eating as way of life.

Here are some tips to help you eat slowly

  • Chew well: Digestion of your food begins from the mouth. Gulping down your food will prevent your stomach to match up with your tongue. And, do you also know that you can’t taste your food until its mixed with saliva. Hence chewing your food thoroughly not only improves digestion but enhances perceptibility of the flavor of your food as well.

To practice chewing well and long, take smaller bites and designate number of chew per bite. Anything more than your current number till you reach over 20 is perfect. 20 seconds to every chew is also a wise idea.

  • Engage all your sense while eating: Sniffing the food morsel before putting it in your mouth and appreciating its taste brings in more satisfaction from the food. Also notice colours in your food and feel its texture in your mouth. Chew well then and you’ll find yourself turning into a slow eater automatically.
  • Deep breathe after every few bites: By following this tip, you’ll buy some more time for your tummy to assimilate all the previous morsels. The excess O2 taken in by extra breathing will also aid in better oxidation of the fats in the food.
  • Add fibers to your meal: They take a long time to chew. Crunching salads after every few bites will additionally supply raw enzymes to digest cooked portions of your meals.
  • Take intermission break: Put down your spoon and fork once your done with half your meal. This break can last till you have finished a mini conversation or taken 24-30 breaths.

# Or push away from table, get up for the second helping, take some sips of water in between, to take a break.

  • Pace with a slow eater: Rather than a ferocious one. We unconsciously imitate people we are close to. So eating with a slow eater will also slow you down.
  • Use non dominant hand to eat or use chopsticks for a week: If you make the task difficult it automatically forces you to pace down.
  • Eat with a baby spoon/fork: By law of volume metrics, eating with a baby spoon will put a speed breaker on your food ride.
  • Work up your food: Shell your pistachios or peanuts or seeds and peel your oranges yourself. Shelling, peeling or individual unwrapping of your snack will also help slow you down and reduce the tendency to over consume any snack.
  • Refuel-every 3-4 hours: Keeping long gaps between meals will prevent you from following slow eating, as mind is weak in the knees when we are famished. Hence, eat frequently to prevent over eating and practice slow eating at any meal time.

Practicing slow eating takes time. If you are a super fast eater, and you are trying these methods to change your habit for good, don’t punish yourself if you don’t succeed in the first few weeks. Try and try till you succeed. And, if you still fail, take help of your coach, to make you practice and push towards rewiring your old habit into a new one of slow mindful eating.

In my next blog in this five part series, I will be talking about Portion Control. I shall share some good tricks and hacks which will help you prevent over eating and the need to diet ever.

To be continued …………..
