9 foods to boost brain functioning during exams

education_student_news

Just as the months of February and March draw near, parents and students both start getting jitters with the onset of examinations. Students spend all their energy and attention towards their studies. Exams are on and it is not just children who are under stress but parents alike.

At times like this, what you eat can make a huge difference in how children and parents deal with the stress. A good diet can significantly reduce stress levels, irritability and promote calmness. Thus, it becomes, even more, important for parents to give them a healthy and wholesome diet which in turn will boost their energy as well as their mental capacity.

Here is a list of foods proven to help in relieving exam stress and giving the much needed increased attention span:

  1. Green vegetables:

Boring and usual as it may sound, all green vegetables have a lot of iron, which helps in increasing memory with the help of increased neurotransmitter flow. Also, high levels of antioxidants keep your child’s brain sharper.

  1. Blue-black-red fruits:

Blackberries, black grapes, blueberries, plums, pomegranate and other fruits black-blue-red in color have high concentrations of antioxidants, vitamins and plant compounds called as phytochemicals which control and inhibit the action of various free radicals which can damage the brain.

  1. Dry fruits and seeds:

Walnuts, almonds, cashew nuts, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, peanut butter, and hazelnuts are all super rich in vitamin-E. All these keep brain and eyes healthy and stress-free! So include loads of these in their daily diet in raw form, honey coated nuts, in shakes, and salads.

  1. Green Beans and pulses:

Green beans, broad beans, black beans, whole green lentils in sprouted form, soups or stews help in providing regular glucose supply to the brain. As brain can’t store energy for later use like some other organs, it needs continuous supply from glucose. All green beans, lentils help in providing the same.

  1. Strawberries!

Wow!so this is one berry that all kids love. So why not include this in their diet in the form of fruit salads, shakes, and smoothies! These contain compounds called as polyphenolics which reduce oxidative stress on body and brain, repair cell damage and refreshes at the same time!

  1. Soya

Active compounds like peptides in soybean considerably improve stress hormone unbalance, brain circulation and energy metabolism. A study has found high levels of estrogen in soy, which helps in mental alertness. So do add up good amounts of tofu, and soya products in your kid’s diets.

  1. Dark Chocolate:

Believe it or not, this is 100% true. Eating dark chocolate which is over 70% cocoa fights the stress hormone cortisol and has an overall relaxing effect on the body. Plus chocolate releases endorphins which act as a natural stress fighter. So, kids, this is good news, but remember not to go overboard with this one!

  1. Whole grains:

Choose whole grains such as oats, barley, brown rice, whole wheat and Quinoa, sprouted grains and wheat germ to ensure adequate intake of vitamin B and zinc.  B Vitamins and zinc are needed for the proper functioning of the central nervous system. It improves concentration, memory, balance and relieves irritability.

  1. Probiotics:

Yogurt, fermented foods like rice cakes, rice pancakes, and other probiotic foods and drinks are easy to digest, low in fat and high in beneficial gut bacteria, which help in enhancing brain receptors. Also fermented foods are rich in vitamin B-12, excellent for boosting immunity.

Some more pointers:

  • Outside eating is a strict NO-NO- stress levels are high and immune system is weak, so avoiding outside food is the safest bet to avoid infections.
  • Don’t go overboard on caffeine. Caffeine can make you feel anxious, which can contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety. Have a cup of coffee or tea, but don’t go overboard. Experts recommend getting no more than 400mg of caffeine per day for adults. Kids and teens should limit themselves to about 100mg per day (one cup of coffee). If you have had an excess of coffee or tea, try having lemon water for neutralizing effect.
  • Take frequent breaks. The average human brain can only focus on one task effectively for about 45 minutes. In addition, research in neuroscience suggests that focusing on the same thing for too long diminishes the brain’s ability to accurately process it. So take a break every hour and take a walk, listen to music, stretch and relax.
  • Stay hydrated.Be sure to drink plenty of water. Aim for at least 3 liters of water per day. Not drinking enough water can make you feel sluggish and stressed. Add coconut water, buttermilk, apple-beetroot juice, sweet lime juice, and lemon water for a change.
  • A cup of herbal tea can help you feel more relaxed and stay hydrated. Peppermint, chamomile, and green tea are safest and most effective.
  • Exercise regularly. Aerobic exercise can relieve stress, so if you find yourself a nervous wreck before an exam, go for a run, do some yoga or hit the gym.
  • Get enough sleep. Not getting a full night’s rest can contribute to feelings of fatigue, stress, and anxiety. Rest well, maintain a regular wake up and sleep time, read a book before sleeping and make your sleep environment calm and quiet.
  • Eat a proper exam day breakfast.Without a proper breakfast, your energy levels will quickly crash and may lead to stress, anxiety, and fatigue. Be sure to have a healthy, energy packed breakfast on exam day. Try eating foods that provide long lasting energy, such as eggs or oats. Avoid foods that are high in sugar, which will give temporary energy but may cause you to crash mid-exam
  • Remember to breathe. With your eyes closed, take three large breaths, then pause, exhale, and repeat the process. Large, deliberate breaths not only help relax the body but also increases the flow of oxygen to the brain. Use this technique both before the test and during difficult exams.

5 basic exercises to shed your excess weight –Part 1

walk-or-run

In today’s hectic life – with packed schedules, calendars have no column for relaxation or time for doing anything good. This also translates into “No Time” for eating healthy food which invariably leads one to have all sorts of JUNK food available on the menu.  and is a ready to eat option. Outcome of overeating junk food is ‘excess weight’.

Excess weight slowly and steadily leads to Obesity and to shed this excess weight and get back on track becomes a huge task. Nevertheless it is not impossible if one puts in the effort, had dedication and patience. Exercise is the key to creating a physically, mentally, and emotionally healthier body. However, at the same time, some of the moves may be too painful or nearly impossible for those who are heavy.

Here are some basic exercise which can be done to avoid unhealthy lifestyle, without any harm:

  1. Walking–This is one of the best and basic workouts that can be done by one and all, anywhere without spending a single penny and is a low-impact aerobic exercise. It may still be difficult to work for those who are morbidly corpulent, which is when baby steps need to be implemented with a walker, walking cane, or assistance. Slow walking burns extra calories for those carrying extra weight because they have to exert more energy than a normal-weight person.Friends Power Walking in Park
  1. Exercise Ball Workouts: people on the heavier side often find it difficult to exercise in front of others. The best solution in this case is Exercise Ball, which is really a great help to do different workouts at home. An exercise ball will help them to do the variety of strengthening, toning, stretching and balancing exercises with support. Exercise balls can be used for abdominal crunches by lying on your back, setting your ankles onto the ball, and lifting upward with your core and both arms behind your head.

You can do:

# “Bouncing On the Ball Workout” targets: core, quads, glutes, and hamstrings

# “Inner-Thigh Squeeze Workout”, targets – Strengthens inner thighs and core

# “Half Squat” with the help of Exercise Ball and wall”, which targets: Strengthens abs, glutes, and hamstrings

Once you get comfortable with the ball, try incorporating it into your everyday activities, such as sitting on it while you are on the computer, eating at the dinner table, or reading a book.

  1. Aqua Aerobics: You can perform your exercise under water because water makes you feel lighter by helping to support your body weight. It also lessens the impact on your joints. You can do swimming if you know.

  1. Seated Stationary Bike: The seated or recumbent stationary bike is different than a normal upright exercise bike. It provides a backrest optimal for heavier or obese people who haven’t developed a strong enough abdominal core to hold them upright long enough. It also places less stress on your lower spine, which is a frequent problem for those who are heavy. Biking also engages different muscles than walking or running do. Alternating exercise days between biking and brisk walking will also give the body a dynamic bonus aerobic workout.

  1. Group Exercise Classes:  There are chances that you will get bored and demotivated if you are working out alone. The best way then to motivate yourself is by joining a group exercise class that has people who all have similar goals such as yours. Each of them then motivates the other to achieve the respective goals. Initially, it will be difficult to achieve your goal, but with the continuous motivation and effort, you will achieve your goal.

Get up set your goal and start working towards it.

Look forward to the second part of my blog where I will take you through some more exercises.

Note: Please consult your Doctor before including the above exercises into your routine, as an individual’s body and medical conditions vary.

We Can I Can

WCD-messages

“We can I Can” is the theme for this year’s World Cancer Day and this theme will continue through 2018. The idea of ‘We Can I Can’ is to explore how everyone –together and individually- can do their part to reduce the global burden of Cancer.

Today is World Cancer Day and experts say that one of the best ways to reduce the risk of Cancer is by adopting a healthy lifestyle. It is said that you can reduce the risk of many common cancers such as bowel, breast, uterine, ovarian, Oesophagus, kidney and liver by maintaining a healthy weight, eating right and making physical activity part of your daily routine.

As individuals ‘I Can’:

  • Make healthy lifestyle choices that include avoiding tobacco, getting plenty of physical activity, eating a healthy diet
  • Learn to detect signs and symptoms of cancer it only makes it easier to treat
  • Support Cancer patients and survivors with physical and emotional impacts of cancer after treatment
  • Share stories of own cancer experiences, communicate with decision makers and join support groups to help make positive changes for all people affected by cancer
  • When possible return to work after cancer treatment to restore normality, routine, stability, social contact and income.

As community ‘We can’:

  • Educate people about the link between lifestyle behaviors – including smoking, poor diet, and lack of physical activity – and cancer risk.
  • Dispel myths that lead to stigma and discrimination against people with cancer in some communities.
  • Encourage schools and workplaces to implement nutrition and physical activity policies that can help people to adopt healthy habits for life.
  • Improve access to affordable cancer health care for all populations.

We all can do our bit. I remember there is an organization in Mumbai called Ugam, a voluntary support group formed by Childhood Cancer survivors. UGAM means “To Rise” underscoring their determination to rise above all obstacles in life & be VICTORS. UGAM, based in Mumbai is the youngest unit of the oldest & most prominent NGO, The Indian Cancer Society( ICS) under its survivorship programme.

Ugam’s vision is to ensure that every childhood cancer survivor finds his/ her way to celebrate life after winning the battle with cancer. Ugam helps in self-empowerment of the survivors. It helps in fulfilling their dreams that were put on hold while they were battling this tormenting disease and the hardships of the treatments. Helping in overcoming social fears and hindrances, overcoming their physical and mental disabilities and moving ahead despite them, Educational and career related assistance and guidance.

Ugam provides a platform for them to talk about their experience and problems and help in building their confidence and self-esteem. Ugam tries and gives them a reason to lead a social and personal life in the future.

Why is GOQii the best startup to work at?

Values-600x480

Two years ago when I first walked into the 7th-floor office of GOQii to meet Vishal Gondal, the first sight was that of some youngsters playing loud music and doing Zumba. I was told it’s a regular routine at the office. If it’s not Zumba then its Tabata or skipping or indulging in some physical activity while at office. Then I saw some weights, exercise ball, kettle bell lying around. My first thought was it was a small startup, few people so it’s just one way to probably relax at work. But, the best part is this fun atmosphere continues even after 2 years of being in operation and with close to 100 odd employees.

No wonder that it is rated among the top 10 best startups that one should be looking at to work for in 2016 by a leading news website. The website rated it based on the new exciting business in the wearable space that GOQii is operating in. But, GOQii apart from the business that it operates is a cool startup to work at for varied reasons.

GOQii founded by gaming geek Vishal Gondal in 2013 with the basic premise to get people to follow a healthy lifestyle by making small changes in their life. GOQii which operates in the wearable space combines a fitness band with personalized coaching to help people lead a healthy lifestyle. This ideology was not meant only for their ‘Players’(customers) but, also to be practiced within the company. One of the values of the company is ‘Practice what we Preach’.

Being a startup there is pressure to perform and deliver but not at the cost of a bad work life balance. The company provides a work atmosphere that is lively and not monotonous. For all here at GOQii, the two main aspects that have attracted them or have kept them back is because it is a great learning place for one’s career and secondly, you can just be the person you are and do not have to change yourself to prove your abilities. It is one company that does not hire basis your degrees but hires basis your attitude and persona.

Says Gondal, CEO of GOQii “We hire people not for their degrees but for their passion. We want people to be themselves at work and have the same persona as their personal life.”

The coaches who are responsible for motivating and changing people’s lifestyle for the better say that they are motivated within the office and therefore are able to motivate their players. The one thing that strikes a chord with all coaches is the ethical practice followed by the company and that they are not focusing on weight loss but on leading a healthy and holistic lifestyle.

The learning curve at GOQii is fabulous, there are great mentors within the company who are approachable including Vishal who is the CEO. These Mentors may work in a completely different department but, you get unlimited, time with him/her to talk and understand any issue. The work culture is open and there is a lot of freedom for you to work your way while you bear in mind the ethical values of the company.

As one employee from the tech department says: “Two years at GOQii has been enriching for me. I being an IT professional have got an opportunity to learn beyond just technology. I have had the opportunity to work with various departments and in the process learned people management. GOQii has not limited me from doing anything.”

Apart from the work culture and the cool people working for the company, GOQii also takes care of its people. Being in the health industry, the company has been instrumental in getting its employees to lead a healthy lifestyle as well without imposing any rules or regulations on them.

“I had a bad work life balance but, I can vouch and say now that I am a much healthier person now. I eat well and sleep well. I am not stressed at work and I do not wake up thinking ‘Oh shit’ I need to get to work. But more eager to get to work daily,” says one woman employee who works in the HR department.

It’s not only about an open work culture, flexibility or ethical values at work, but also the fun things that happen within office- the regular workout sessions, Zumba session for fitness, work from wherever you want to as no specific desk space is allotted, work sitting on a beanbag or on an exercise ball so long as work is getting done.

I would be doing injustice if I do not talk of the healthy food that is served for lunch. Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays the employees get healthy organic food and Tuesday and Thursday is Vegan organic all free of cost. There are also regular outdoor activities such as runs, walks, hikes or treks conducted across India where players and coaches meet. Last but not the least, the karma culture is a part of GOQii Life where employees along with coaches and players are invited to volunteer with a social organization and do good for the society.
