Everything You Need to Know about Alzheimer’s

alzheimer's dayIf you’ve read ‘The Notebook’ by Nicholas Parks, later adapted into a film by the same name, you might have a fair idea of what Alzheimer’s really is. The book is centered around Allie and Noah, an all-time romantic couple. There’s a beautiful scene in the film where Noah, who is an old man now, narrates a story to Allie about a couple and how their love blossomed through hardships. Amazed by this story, Allie only realizes later that this story is about them. Noah read this to her as he had promised before the disease set in. The disease was Alzheimer’s!

Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurological disorder which results in memory loss, personality changes, global cognitive dysfunction and functional impairments. It is the leading cause of dementia in the elderly. The disease begins at a slow rate. Initially, it captures the brain and slowly overcomes human thoughts, activities, and language as well. People start having trouble in remembering things and the one evident sign is forgetting the names of people.

What Causes Alzheimer’s?

The exact etiology is unknown, but a few risk factors can be marked out.

  • Age: Incidence and prevalence increases after the age of 60
  • Family History: First-degree relatives at greater risk
  • Genetic: ApoEepsilon 4 gene
  • Lack of Sleep
  • Regular and high consumption of junk food

Clinical Features 

  1. Progressive memory loss and decline of higher mental functions
    Example: problem-solving small issues, confusion in time, date and month, the problem faced in doing family activities of daily routine, misplacing things, poor judgment and problem in speaking and writing as well
  2. Difficulty in naming and understanding what others are speaking
  3. Apraxia: The inability to carry out skilled motor activities, inability to recognize objects, places and people
  4. Behavioral changes: Agitation, aggression, wandering and persecutory delusions, loss of insight, depression
  5. Loss of inhibition leading to inappropriate social behavior
  6. In advanced stages, a person may be mute, inactive and can succumb to different infections
  7. Inability to recognize color and visual picture
  8. In case there is an underlying cause, additional clinical features may be present

Management

The most important management for Alzheimer’s is support – Physical, mental and moral support from family members and caregivers.

  • Antioxidants (Vitamin E) can slow the decline of cognitive function
  • Drugs like anticholinesterase inhibitors (like donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine), memantine, N-methyl-D aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist
  • Ginkgo biloba, a plant extract has been shown to be useful
  • Treatment of the underlying cause, if any

Alzheimer’s and Ayurveda

According to the principles of Ayurveda, Alzheimer’s is caused as a result of the imbalance in vata – this imbalance is quite common as a person begins to grow in age. It affects the vata – in the tissues of the central nervous system of the body – mainly the brain which then slowly becomes imbalanced.

Treatment begins with a Vata balancing diet. Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha) in the powdered form along with either ghee or milk is included in the patient’s daily diet. This helps charge and soothe the Vata. Herbs such as Brahmi and Ashwagandha that serve as nerve tonics are mainly used.

An oil massage daily, prior to a bath is also considered significant in this form of treatment. Ayurveda specialized preparations for Alzheimer’s treatment that are made from rice have proved highly beneficial to the patients besides providing the required nutrients to the old age person.

How Can Turmeric Help?

Turmeric or Haldi, as it’s known in Hindi, is a part of almost every Indian recipe. It is known all over the world for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-spasmodic, anti-allergic properties and hence is used in medicines, cosmetics etc.

Curcumin that is found in turmeric has radical scavenging properties thereby preventing damage that can be caused to the cells of our body by free radicals. Alzheimer’s alleviation could be based upon the ability of curcumin to combat the development of amyloid plaque (accumulation of protein) in the brain leading to inflammation and impairment of cells.

Prevention

There’s no real guarantee when it comes to preventing Alzheimer’s. The only way to minimize your chances is by living a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

  1. Make sure you don’t stop learning new things. Continuous learning like a musical instrument, a new language or any subject that you didn’t have knowledge about keeps the memory intact.
  2. Forget your phone and start memorizing important numbers like bank accounts, mobile numbers, life insurance/investment policy numbers, credit and debit card numbers, passwords and recalling them when needed is an easy way of jogging your memory.
  3. Make sure you get your hands on challenging puzzles like Sudoku, different crosswords, etc.
  4. Consumption of antioxidants via diet/supplements is helpful in preserving memory function.

Cancer Anxiety in India: A Growing Epidemic

– 60% of respondents reported moderate to extreme worry about developing cancer.
– 33% expressed significant concerns over the financial burden of cancer treatment.
– 24% feared death as a result of cancer, underscoring its perception as a terminal illness.
– 70% had not undergone any form of cancer screening in the past five years, despite awareness of its importance.
– 56% worried about environmental factors like pollution and radiation contributing to cancer risks.
– 27.6% expressed anxiety related to poor lifestyle choices such as smoking and unhealthy diets.

Discussing cancer, though difficult, is crucial given the rising anxiety about the disease in India. GOQii’s recent Cancer report titled – “Living in Fear: The Hidden Epidemic of Cancer Anxiety Among the Public” reveals alarming statistics: over 60% of Indians experience significant fear of developing cancer, driven not only by the disease itself but also by the overwhelming treatment costs and feared mortality.

Despite this awareness, an astonishing 70% have not undergone any cancer screenings in the last five years, indicating a serious lag in preventive healthcare. This discrepancy highlights the urgent need for better public health strategies focused on enhancing screening access and educating the public about the benefits of early detection.

Recognizing the deep connection between lifestyle and health outcomes, experts emphasize the need for preventive approaches to mitigate these financial and health burdens.

Dr Anurag Agrawal, Head, of Koita Center for Digital Health, Dean of BioSciences and Health Research, Trivedi School of Biosciences, Ashoka University shared his insights: “As longevity increases, particularly when accompanied by unhealthy living, the risk of cancer, unfortunately, rises as well. It has become imperative that we focus on promoting preventive measures and fostering healthy habits to address this growing concern.”

Luke Coutinho, a Holistic Lifestyle Coach in Integrative Medicine, remind us that the integration of knowledge, science, lifestyle medicine, and epigenetics with traditional treatments can dramatically change our approach to this disease. “Now is the time to awaken and make the change with faith, belief, action, and science,” says Coutinho.

The financial aspect of cancer treatment is another grave concern. With 33% of respondents anxious about the economic burden of cancer treatment, it’s clear that the cost is not just financial but also emotional and psychological. Families fear being pushed to financial ruin, with the extensive costs of diagnostics, surgeries, chemotherapy, and ongoing medication looming large over their heads.

The report highlights the overwhelming fear of cancer as a death sentence among 24% of Indians, exacerbated by late detection and inadequate screening. This perception is often due to delayed diagnosis, making cancer seem incurable. It calls for significant improvements in India’s healthcare system, emphasizing the need for early detection and better access to treatment, especially in under-resourced rural areas.

Stressing the critical need to address this hidden epidemic, Vishal Gondal, Founder & CEO of GOQii says: “Cancer fear and anxiety is for real, and it’s affecting millions of people across India in ways that go beyond physical health. People are living in constant fear of not only the disease but also the potential financial and emotional toll it could take on them and their loved ones. This report serves as a wake-up call. We need to shift our focus to prevention, early detection, and providing people with the right tools and resources to manage both their health and their anxiety.”

Today, most of are used to late night parties – whether it’s an office party, a birthday celebration, a marriage anniversary or similar events. Partying is often seen as a way to relieve stress and enjoy ourselves.

One of the most common beverage at parties is ALCOHOL. Any celebration is often marked by the presence of beer, vodka, champagne, tequila, rum, whisky, etc., flowing like water. Some people enjoy drinking alcohol, whether it’s hard liquor or beer, while others are social drinkers who drink to enjoy and celebrate. Many drink under the guise of being stressed or overworked, which can lead to become an alcoholic.

The harmful effects of alcohol on our body and immune system are well-known, but there is still a constant desire to drink at every opportunity.

The real fact is that many people are not completely aware of the dangerous side effects of alcohol and how it can lead to addiction, which is harmful to one’s immune system and the liver.

A good immune system helps our body fight diseases and virus that enter our body. However, excessive alcohol consumption deprives the body of valuable immune-boosting nutrients, such as Vitamin A, and can impair white blood cells, which are our body’s defense against illness and disease, making them less able to kill germs.

Damage to the immune system increases with the level of alcohol consumed. For those who are addicted to alcohol, there are several immediate issues such as:

  • Slurred speech
  • Drowsiness
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Upset stomach
  • Headaches
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Distorted vision and hearing
  • Impaired judgment
  • Decreased perception and coordination
  • Unconsciousness

  • Blackouts (memory lapses, where the drinker cannot remember events that occurred while under the influence)

LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL

Binge drinking and continued alcohol use in large amounts are associated with numerous health issues and heart problems, including:

  • Unintentional injuries such as car crashes, falls, burns, drowning
  • Intentional injuries such as firearm injuries, domestic violence
  • Increased on-the-job injuries and loss of productivity
  • Increased family problems, broken relationships
  • Alcohol poisoning
  • High blood pressure, stroke, and other heart-related diseases
  • Liver disease
  • Nerve damage
  • Sexual problems
  • Permanent damage to the brain
  • Vitamin B1 deficiency, which can lead to a disorder characterized by amnesia, apathy, and disorientation
  • Ulcers
  • Gastritis (inflammation of stomach walls)
  • Malnutrition
  • Cancer of the mouth and throat

Alcohol is not just harmful to your body and its systems; it can also lead to weight gain. Research shows that calories from alcohol are “empty calories,” meaning they have no nutritional value. Most alcoholic drinks contain traces of vitamins and minerals, but not usually in amounts that significantly contribute to our diet.

Drinking alcohol also reduces the amount of fat your body burns for energy. While we can store nutrients, protein, carbohydrates, and fat in our bodies, we can’t store alcohol. So our systems want to get rid of it, and doing so takes priority. All of the other processes that should be taking place (including absorbing nutrients and burning fat) are thus interrupted due to alcohol.

Here are some common alcoholic beverage and the alcohol content:

  • Beer: 2-6% alcohol
  • Wine: 8-20% alcohol
  • Tequila: 40% alcohol
  • Rum: 40% or more alcohol
  • Brandy: 40% or more alcohol
  • Gin: 40–47% alcohol
  • Whiskey: 40–50% alcohol
  • Vodka: 40–50% alcohol 

These are some calories counts for various drinks:

  1. Beer contains 43 calories per 100 ml
  2. Wine contain 83 calories per 100 ml
  3. Tequila contains 96 calories in one jigger (shot)
  4. Rum contains 231 calories per 100 ml
  5. Brandy contains 104 calories in one jigger (shot)
  6. Gin contains 222 calories per 100grams
  7. Whisky contains 700 calories per 100 ml
  8. Vodka contains 231 calories per 100 ml

7 Foods To Avoid If You Have Asthma

Asthma is an ancient Greek word which means “short drawn breath”. It can be quite troublesome as it causes chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. Patients suffering from asthma have more trouble exhaling carbon dioxide than inhaling oxygen because the air passages of the small bronchi become clogged, making it difficult to breathe. Most asthma patients face more difficulty breathing during the night time. 

Modern medicine has not been able to find a cure for this troublesome respiratory disease. Drugs and vaccines help in reducing symptoms and provide temporary relief. Allergy is a major cause of asthma, but it can be managed with a  proper diet and lifestyle, such as eating foods which are easy to digest and adapting lifestyle methods such as yogic kriya – which helps in proper assimilation of food, strengthening of lungs, digestive and circulatory system. 

Which Foods Should You Avoid If You Have Asthma? 

While there are foods which can help you alleviate the symptoms of asthma, here are some which you must avoid at any cost. 

  1. Sugar: Sweet carbonated drinks, candies, cakes, biscuits, and all the foods which are rich in sugar increase coughing and wheezing in children. Sugar attacks the immune system of the airway, causing narrowing of airways and mucous production. Instead of sweets, include jaggery and coconut sugar.
  2. Junk Foods: Foods like burgers, pizza, red meats, fries, etc., which are loved by a large part of the population, worsens asthma symptoms. These foods make one overweight, and the lungs have to work harder, making it difficult to breathe. Include simple, homemade foods instead of junk foods
  3. Alcohol: Sulphites, one of the allergens present in many alcoholic beverages, worsen asthma symptoms. It increases wheezing and breathing difficulty. Include more natural beverages like lemon water and coconut water instead of beer and wine.
  4. Beans: Beans cause gas in our body, putting pressure on the diaphragm and increasing acid reflux. It is better to avoid beans and other foods like cabbage, onion and garlic which are gas forming.
  5. Tea and Coffee: Another allergen, Salicylates, is found in tea and coffee. Though it is rare, some asthmatic patients are allergic to salicylates and find difficulty in breathing. As an alternative, you can include herbal teas like chamomile tea and passionflower tea instead of regular tea and coffee.
  6. Shrimp: Shrimp contains sulphites, which is an allergen. Yes, SULPHITES again! It can worsen asthma symptoms.
  7. Salt: Salt is one of the worst foods for asthma. It can tighten the airways, cause inflammation, and fluid retention, making it a very serious lung complication. Include natural flavouring ingredients like cumin, turmeric and chilli flakes instead of salt.
