“It’s My Duty To Give It Back!” – Paramdeep Singh Ghuman

user journeyDoes health really need to take a backseat when you chase your professional goals? And if you do recover, work on your health, get active and fitter, how do you take it to the next level? Do you train harder or do you influence those around you to be better? Our GOQii Player and Champion of Chandigarh Paramdeep Singh Ghuman found the answers to these questions!

Life Before GOQii

As with every high profile working professional, Paramdeep Singh Ghuman was unable to focus on his health. He used to actively participate in sports during his college days but once he began working, everything else took a backseat.

He became a workaholic and immersed himself into work without thinking about his health, diet or sleep. As a result of neglecting his health, he was diagnosed with high blood pressure (140/100) and cholesterol (250). To add to this, he suffered from constipation and disturbed sleep.

His doctor advised him to start with some physical activity and lifestyle changes. Taking his doctor’s advice, he started walking for 20 minutes a day at a nearby park. After a while, he became inconsistent and fell back to his old habits. As soon as that happened, the fear of heart-related ailments crept in. He began exploring other options to track his activity, steps and someone who could monitor his eating habits.

He was determined to change!

Enter GOQii

Paramdeep Singh Ghuman’s friend, who was employed with Axis Bank, introduced him to GOQii in February 2017. This proved to be a turning point for him. His journey began with a little bit of myth-busting and a lot of hard work! Paramdeep believed that a heavy breakfast like paratha with ghee and curd was ideal to keep him going throughout the day. This, along with his other perceptions on nutrition was corrected by his coach.

He was asked to drink lemon with warm water in the morning and eat nuts that were soaked overnight. After his morning exercise, he ate muesli with milk. Once he reaches office, he had to eat either raw paneer or boiled eggs. He began including salads in his lunch and dinner, fruits for mid-morning snacks and an apple or banana milkshake in the evening.

On the exercise front, he was advised to start walking again. Initially, he did complain of pain but his coach reassured him that it was because his body is still getting used to being active. After 3-4 months, he began running for a kilometre which gradually increased to 5km and further to 10km. He improved his stamina with strength training and HIIT.

Changes and Champion of Good Health!

As of today, Paramdeep’s blood pressure, as well as cholesterol, are both under control. He is completely off medication. His sleep has improved and his constipation issues are now a thing of the past!

His weight has reduced from 90kg to 83kg. He feels stress-free, happy and content with his life and the changes introduced by his GOQii Coach. He regularly attends Dr. Paramjeet, Coach Parwage Alam and other nutrition classes on GOQii Play.

After seeing the impact of the changes that he made to his lifestyle, Paramdeep wanted to do the same for others. He now encourages community members and office colleagues to be physically fit – with many of them joining GOQii.

He says, “I feel it is my duty to give back to society, prep young guns to participate in some or the other activity, stay fit and healthy. I want to emphasize the importance of physical exercise and mindful eating to them.”

He is currently a GOQii Champion and heads the Chandigarh Chapter and thoroughly enjoys his assignments.

Tips to protect yourself from allergic conjunctivitis this monsoon

conjunctivitis this monsoon

I guess I am late! Rains are already here and we can’t just ignore getting drenched in heavy rains. But, getting drenched in the rains might not be a good thing for your body. Monsoon not only brings with it rains but it brings along with it an army of infections. Viral infections are the most common ones. They are at its peak during monsoon season because of the sudden increase in the moisture levels in the climate. Among all infection, eyes are the worst affected part of the human body.

You might have suffered from itchy eyes which turns red the moment you rub it? Do not ignore it as it could be conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis in literal terms means inflammation of conjunctiva (thin protective membrane of the eyes) Conjunctivitis is of two types: – acute allergic conjunctivitis and chronic acute conjunctivitis. Acute allergic conjunctivitis includes the seasonal allergy which turns up during monsoons. Conjunctivitis spreads through direct contact. Hand to eye touch can cause conjunctivitis, as this disease is highly contagious. It can last for minimum 3 days up to 7 days.

Redness always doesn’t mean conjunctivitis, there are various other reasons that can cause redness or itchy eyes. It might be dust or too much strain on the eyes or insomnia which might cause redness of the eyes. Do not confuse yourself between these reasons and conjunctivitis. It is always advisable that if you face redness, itchiness, watery eyes, swelling, difficulty in blinking, dry eyes for more than 2 days then visit your ophthalmologists as soon as possible. It might be allergic conjunctivitis or some other disease, it is always better to get it checked from the expert.

Here are few tips to protect yourself from conjunctivitis this monsoon!

  • Maintaining personal hygiene is most important precaution which one needs to take.
  • Avoid touching your eyes without washing your hands properly.
  • Wash your eyes with cold water whenever you come from outside.
  • If you feel that there is slightest pain in your eyes or you have been in contact with the person who has conjunctivitis, give your eyes cold compressions immediately after you come home. It is always better if you visit a doctor before the diseases aggravate.
  • If someone at home is down with conjunctivitis make sure that whenever you are putting drops in their eyes or giving them cold water compressions, you wash your hands thoroughly before and after you get in contact with the person.
  • Put 2 drops of rose water every time before you go to bed.
  • If you wear contact lenses, avoid using them during monsoons as the chances of infection is higher with lenses.
  • Do not share cosmetics. Risk of infection doubles when you share them.
  • Avoid swimming, visiting water parks during monsoon, not only conjunctivitis, body gets prone to other diseases too!
  • Avoid touching public taps, handles and if you get in contact with them, always keep a sanitizer and use them frequently.
  • Wear glasses to keep your eyes protected.
  • Avoid self-medication. You do not know about the action of drugs.
  • Never use steroid eye drops. Always consult your doctor.
  • If in case doctor is not available, choose antibiotic drops over steroid eye drops.

Conjunctivitis is not a one-time disease, chances of getting conjunctivitis is endless. So as it is rightly said, Prevention is better than cure!

Change Begins With a Single Step – Aniruddha Bhave User Journey

Motivation is always the key to achieving your health goals but what happens when you don’t have a health goal to begin with? What happens when there is nothing there to push you towards a healthier lifestyle? Where do you begin? For Aniruddha Bhave, the push came from the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle.

“It’s true that motivation has to come from within. However, you always need someone to lend a helping hand. This was fulfilled exceptionally well by GOQii,” says Aniruddha Bhave after his transformation with GOQii.

Sedentary Lifestyle and the Desire to Change

Before joining GOQii, Aniruddha Bhave, a banker from Mumbai, led a very sedentary lifestyle. His day included long hours of sitting in the office and extensive travelling for work. He travelled by car wherever he went and his eating timings were quite off.

His weight had increased to 79kg, he had been smoking for almost 10 years and drank alcohol occasionally. All of these habits took a steep toll on his health. He had suffered from spondylitis at the age of 32 and was diagnosed as pre-diabetic at the age of 40.

Around this time, he had no idea of what constitutes a healthy lifestyle. He was oblivious about fitness, about what comprises of a healthy and an unhealthy diet. His doctor had asked him to either start with medication or healthy lifestyle modification. As exercise seemed liked a far cry to him back then, he chose medication.

He was on medication for 2 years before joining GOQii.

Making the Change!

In September 2017, one of Anirudhha Bhave’s friends introduced him to GOQii. Initially, he was extremely sceptical whether it will help or not or if it was going to be worth the time and effort. He decided to go ahead because he was looking for a tracker to track his activities.

When Aniruddha Bhave began his journey with GOQii, his primary goal was weight loss. The initial habits that his GOQii Coach set was basic walking as exercise, mindful eating and better sleep – all of which were missing from his life. He was asked to consume raw garlic on an empty stomach in the morning along with a concoction made of lemon, honey and cinnamon with warm water.

As he progressed, Aniruddha slowly switched from walking to jogging and later, he began running. His GOQii Coach was very persistent and ensured that he followed all the habits given to him diligently. When he began running in December 2017, he knew there was no turning back now!

Complete Change, Weight Loss and More

“Running has become my passion,” is what Aniruddha Bhave told GOQii. In fact, he had suffered muscle loss because he was running too much. His GOQii Coach then asked him to perform strength training and increase his protein intake. He began consuming Whey Protein and even tried protein bars, both of which he bought from the GOQii Health Store.

He stopped with medication 3 months after joining GOQii. Aniruddha Bhave even took the 21 Days Challenge and completed it. His current habits include running for two days – one for 15km and the other for 7-8km. On other days, he performs strength training. He has even set up a  mini gym at his home for weight training as suggested by his GOQii Coach.

Within 8 months of joining GOQii, Aniruddha lost 12kg. He further reduced his weight to 64.5kg. His HbA1c level has come down from 6.5 to a normal 5.5. Whereas walking even half a km used to be a task, he can now run 10km easily.

Aniruddha now is quite active on GOQii Play. He attributes his increased motivation to coach Aliya Imran. Apart from Aliya’s classes, he also attends Marathon Expert Parwage Alam’s classes for tips on running, Mayuri Dongre’s classes for reviews on products available in the GOQii Health Store as well as Fitness Expert Shweta Kariya’s classes functional training and fitness. He even attends Medical Classes conducted by doctors for medical awareness.

Being the Force

Looking at his amazing transformation, a lot of his friends have taken a keen interest in health and fitness. His wife has also lost weight and brought her thyroid under control with help from GOQii. Aniruddha Bhave is their source of constant motivation and inspiration.

Overall, he considers GOQii to be a blessing for him. He has proven that although the first step is often difficult, but once you take it, with the right guidance and motivation, it can transform your life in unimaginable ways. Any and all change begins with a single step and when you do, there’s no turning back!

Pleasuring Yourself: Is it Good and Healthy? Part II

masturbation benefits and myths

In this article, I am addressing Kanika’s queries on myths of masturbation, how it affects relationships and sex life.

Kanika: My friend seems to be addicted to masturbation. How do I know if I am addicted or if it is chronic? How much masturbation is good or bad?

Me:

  1. Do you feel distressed by doing it? If you think masturbation is causing any kind of discomfort or distress it is best to visit your doctor.
  2. If you feel some kind of pain during the act, it could mean you have hurt yourself accidentally, or you are not doing something right. Correct it!
  3. While there is no benchmark, stating one can masturbate ‘a particular’ number of times in a day or week. However, till the time, the act does not disrupt your life in any particular way, it is ok.
  4. If it is adversely impacting your relationships, stop it! Speak with a doctor and your partner (if he/she is understanding).

The Best Thing is to Talk it Out With Your Healthcare Professional

Kanika:  My friend does not get the urge to masturbate.  Is that normal?

Me: Of course! Everybody is made differently, and has different needs. It is fine if you have never masturbated and do not want to!

Kanika: Well that is good for her, but she also told me that masturbation causes blindness and a low libido? Im worried!

Me: Kanika, let me tell you some weird myths which float around masturbation. These are silly because there are no biological connections. I have explained in the earlier article, as to what happens when one masturbates.

Masturbation will NOT cause:

  • Decreased libido,  impotence or erectile dysfunction
  • Penis shrinkage or curvature
  • Blindness
  • Hairy palms
  • Low sperm count
  • Infertility
  • Mental illness

Kanika: Tell me, is it the same for women and men?

Me: Logically, yes! It is the stimulation of erogenous zones of the body. It is pleasurable for both and both can masturbate for their partners too!

However, a Few Might Experience

  • Chafing or tender skin if they are too rough, but this will usually heal in a few days. In men, there might be a slight swelling of the penis, if  done too frequently.
  • At times, people feel guilt but like I said, it’s just the physical urge of the body combined with the fireworks of the brain. It’s just fun! Nothing to be ashamed about.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

  • Aggressive masturbation is unhealthy for men and women both. You might hurt yourself! In men, too tight a grip can result in decreased sensation for some time. This can be solved through change of technique. In women, it might lead to pain in the  vagina, if the area is not lubricated, or rashes.
  • It is a myth that people in relationships do not masturbate. It’s a common behaviour to masturbate for the partner as well and it is normal!

Kanika: Does masturbation affect sex?

Me: Yes it does. Like I said, many people observe an increase in urge with the partner. Also, it makes you aware about your own body. You can share with your partner what you like and don’t.

In fact you can tell him/her what makes you orgasm. However, if you feel masturbation is overtaking the role of sex with your partner, then I will be concerned! It is time to speak with your partner about what you like and don’t. Sex in a relationship is extremely essential.

Kanika, it is appreciated that you have asked these questions. It is best to clarify doubts than to be in doubt. I hope your doubts are cleared now. Tell your friends to read up and ask questions in the comment section below!
