Stress Management Techniques to Complement Any Medical Condition

Managing a medical condition such as diabetes or hypertension can be both mentally and physically taxing. Whether you’re navigating daily health challenges, recovering post-surgery, or simply feeling overwhelmed by stress, it’s essential to find ways to support your overall well-being. Incorporating relaxation techniques into your daily routine can significantly enhance your quality of life and empower you to manage your health more effectively. Here are some practical and effective strategies to help you feel stronger, healthier, and more in control, regardless of your medical condition:

 1. Tailor Your Diet to Your Mood

When you’re feeling low, it’s tempting to reach for sugary snacks. Instead, opt for protein-rich foods like lean meats, eggs, cheese, and seeds. These not only have a minimal impact on blood sugar and energy levels but also aid in the production of dopamine and serotonin—chemicals in the brain that promote feelings of well-being.

2. Embrace ‘Good Enough’

Striving for perfection in every task can lead to burnout. Recognise that doing your best is sufficient. Allowing yourself to accept ‘good enough’ frees up mental energy, enabling you to focus more on self-care.

3. Prioritise Quality Sleep

Restorative sleep is crucial for healing and overall health. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to help your body repair, reduce inflammation, and strengthen your immune system.

4. Soak Up Some Sunlight

Exposure to natural light, especially in the morning, can boost your mood and provide a healthy dose of vitamin D. A gentle stroll in the sunlight can also help regulate your body clock, leading to better sleep patterns.

5. Incorporate Physical Activity

Engaging in activities like yoga or deep-breathing exercises can reduce stress hormones and increase endorphins, enhancing both physical healing and mental well-being.

6. Dedicate Time to Relaxation Daily

Set aside moments each day for activities that relax you, such as listening to music, practising mindfulness, or meditating. These practices can alleviate anxiety and improve concentration.

7. Combine Music with Movement

Dancing or moving to your favourite tunes can make exercise enjoyable and uplifting. Whether it’s stretching at home or walking to a lively playlist, combining music with movement can enhance your exercise experience.

8. Plan Enjoyable Activities

Having events or tasks to look forward to can provide motivation and positivity. Arrange coffee catch-ups with friends or plan a movie night to break the routine and uplift your spirits.

9. Laugh Often

Laughter is a natural stress reliever. It reduces stress hormones, strengthens the immune system, and fosters connections with others. Share a joke, watch a comedy, or reminisce about joyful memories.

10. Explore New Hobbies

Trying something new can stimulate your mind, boost confidence, and break the monotony. Whether it’s learning a skill, experimenting with a new recipe, or picking up a hobby, novelty can elevate your mood.

11. Consider Pet Companionship

If circumstances allow, having a pet can offer companionship, structure, and unconditional love—all of which can reduce stress and enhance emotional well-being.

12. Practise Gratitude

Each day, reflect on three things you’re grateful for. This simple exercise can shift your focus from challenges to positives, fostering a more balanced and hopeful outlook.

No matter the medical condition you’re facing, managing stress can profoundly impact your health and quality of life. These strategies are not just about coping—they’re about thriving, finding joy, and empowering yourself to live fully, even amidst health challenges. Take small steps, cultivate supportive habits, and remember: you’re not alone on this journey.

9 Tips For Self-Motivation

9 Tips for Self-MotivationAs part of my regular conversation, I asked one of my players about exercise.

“I don’t feel like it!” He replied swiftly.

Seeing his lack of motivation, I nudged him a little gently to give it a try. He sulkily replied with an “Okay!”

The same episode unfolded the next day with him being unenthusiastic about exercising. It didn’t matter how hard I tried to motivate him day after day. After a while, I realised that the player completely lacked intrinsic or self-motivation i.e the motivation that comes from within.

Self-Motivation emanates from one’s own sheer willingness to achieve a goal that has been set for oneself. Many times, we promise ourselves that from next week or next month we will start exercising, leave sugar or work towards a healthier lifestyle, but how many times do we sincerely stick to these goals? Of course, the desire to change our lifestyle for our own good has to be self-motivated, but seldom are we able to maintain the interest levels to achieve a goal.

Self-Motivation is quite important when it comes to being fit. We start well by following a routine of waking up early and going for walk, a run or to the gym. The first few days of the week go by as per routine but suddenly there is a radical dip in the levels of our motivation. In most cases, the loss of motivation occurs when we step on a weighing scale and see no change. Another reason could be negative, self-criticising thought patterns where we compare ourselves to skinny models  or chiselled athletes, thinking we’ll never be like them, instantly hammering our motivation into a million pieces.

If you’ve been seeking self-motivation and aren’t able to find it, here are 9 surefire ways to stay motivated!

1. Do It Only If You Want To
If you are exercising for the sake of it, let’s embrace the truth, it won’t work. Motivation levels will drop easily when you do something you don’t want to. To keep going and feel motivated from within, you need to enjoy your workout. To stay fit, experiment and find out what activity you like the most.

2. Stop Criticising Yourself
If you start comparing yourself with someone you think is perfect, then your motivation will bite the dust. Realise that the person next to you who is in perfectly good shape took the time and effort to look like that. Instead of dwelling in self-degrading thoughts and criticising yourself, put in a fair effort.

3. Picture Yourself a Few Years From Now
Picture a healthier you, a slimmer or better-looking you. How would you like to see yourself a year from today? This thought itself can motivate you from within.

4. Get Over Your Laziness
“Not now”, “Maybe tomorrow”, “I will start from Monday”, “Maybe next month”… Do you recognise these statements? They are evident signs of procrastination and laziness. Very soon, the “not now” becomes “never” and we hardly try to achieve any pending health goals we may have. What should we do? Get over it and start moving! Try playing some energetic music around you, change your lazy-looking, comfort-filled environment and get yourself going.

5. Focus on the Goal
This is the most important thing you need to do. Focus on your goals, whether it is to achieve balance in your lifestyle, eat healthy or lose your weight, start focusing on your goal. More than often, we divert from our original goals and start overthinking. For instance, if your goal is to lose weight, stop thinking about the clothes that you are not fitting in right now, or what will happen if you do and do not lose weight. Just tame your mind and focus on your ultimate goal!

6. Set Small Targets and Give Yourself a Reward
Reward plays a very important role in self-motivation. Start with small goals, or what we like to call S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely) goals and reward yourself every time you achieve one of them. For example, if your ultimate goal is to lose 25kg, have a “S.M.A.R.T” goal to lose 4 to 5 kg per month and when you manage to achieve it successfully, reward yourself with something you like. Be it new clothes or even a new mobile phone.

7. Set Penalties
If Rewards work then penalties work as well. By penalties, I don’t actually mean punishing yourself to the extent of starvation when you eat junk food or excessively working out every time you skip exercise. Instead, do it in a positive way. Like every time you miss exercise or eat something unhealthy, put a certain amount of money in a penalty box, which will ultimately go to your friend/ spouse/ kids or colleagues. That will motivate you enough to not skip exercise the next time.

8. Pen It Down
If you write your goals and dreams on a regular basis, you are 42% more likely to achieve those goals, says a study conducted by Dr. Gail Matthews – a psychology professor at the Dominican University of California. Try maintaining a journal and write your goals as well as achievements down on a daily basis.

9. Do It For the Selfies!
It may sound funny but if you like to take pictures and post them on social media, you might actually likes this idea. Going for a workout? Take a selfie! Bought yourself new gym clothes? Take a selfie! Lost two inches? Take a selfie! Apart from the shares and likes, you will also be able to map your progress through pictures. So give it a try. It definitely worked for me!

In closing, remember that being self-motivated takes a lot of willpower. You need to feel good about yourself as well as better yourself on a daily basis. No amount of external motivation is enough if you don’t have the inclination to accomplish your own goals.

We hope these motivational tips will ignite the self-motivated fire within you. If you found these strategies valuable and have your own motivational techniques to share, please do so in the comments section below.

Remember, your path to self-motivation and a healthier you starts with the first step.

Transforming Health and Life: Dhiren Matani’s Inspirational Journey to Wellness

Dhiren Matani - Healthy lifestyleIn the face of persistent health challenges, Dhiren Matani, (43), an entrepreneur from Mumbai, embarked on a journey of resilience and transformation. Battling weight issues and a heart condition for some years, he refused to succumb to the daunting odds. Through sheer determination, he took control of his health at the right time by adopting a disciplined lifestyle that nurtured positive change. With unwavering commitment, Dhiren not only managed to conquer these obstacles but also embraced a life of balanced well-being. His story is an inspiring testament to the incredible power of self-care, offering hope and motivation to all those on their path to vitality and wellness.

The Starting Point

So how did it start for Dhiren? In 2017, Dhiren weighed over 90 kg. He was walking 6 km daily and doing some exercises, but none of that reflected in weight loss. Then in 2018, he had a heart attack. That was the turning point for him.

“Post my heart attack, everything changed. I had to take care of my health. The doctor had recommended no running. Basically, I was restricted from doing any activity that would increase my heart rate. I was on medication for my heart issue,” says Dhiren. Dhiren continued with simple exercises like walking and yoga. However, he wanted to get healthy. And was looking for smart watch to help him align his lifestyle.

The Journey with GOQii

Dhiren’s search for a smartwatch eventually led him to GOQii. On reading about GOQii he realised the device came with 3 months personalised coaching. “I liked the fact that GOQii offered three months of personal coaching as well. I joined GOQii in February 2022,” says Dhiren.

On joining GOQii – His health goal was to reduce weight, maintain it, and also control his heart condition and blood pressure.

Dhiren’s initial coach, Gaurav, focused on exercises for weight loss and a reduced-carb diet. “I used to watch Jeet Selal’s video on Play and Exercise,” says Dhiren. Dhiren lost around 6 kg within the first 3 months of joining GOQii. Thereafter, his coach changed, and Meenal Khandelwal was his new coach.

With coach Meenal, the focus changed. Coach Meenal took a holistic approach. She explained the right diet and how to eat right. She focused on maintaining Dhiren’s weight.

Meenal says: “I had to introduce a few habits for Dhiren”, such as Reducing fat intake and adding healthy snack options. For a healthy, balanced diet, fruits and proteins were also added.

Take probiotics for better digestion and green tea with a pinch of cinnamon to control his Blood pressure.

The Challenges and Triumphs

It has not been easy for Dhiren. Maintaining a healthy routine is challenging due to busy schedules, temptations, and a lack of immediate results.

“Initially, it was difficult for Dhiren to change his routine due to his work schedule. But, slowly and steadily he worked towards it and was able to make the changes,” says coach Meenal.

Overcoming inertia, consistency, and adapting to setbacks require mental resilience. Yet, the rewards of enhanced well-being make the effort worthwhile, turning dedication into a catalyst for positive change.

Dhiren’s efforts to follow a routine and be disciplined and consistent helped him achieve his weight loss (his current weight is 78 kgs). However, nine months ago, borderline blood sugar levels were detected, prompting a precautionary course of medication due to a family history of diabetes.

The medication was continued for a period of 4-5 months. Following this, regular blood sugar monitoring revealed normal levels, leading to the discontinuation of medication. His blood sugar is now under control and is focused on maintaining it.

A Journey Towards Wellness

In Dhiren’s inspiring journey, we witness the transformative power of discipline and dedication. He not only shed excess weight but has taken control of his health. With his blood sugar now under control and medications halted, he stands as a testament to what one can achieve with resilience.

As he continues to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle with all his vital parameters under control, Dhiren’s story reminds us that every small step towards health is a giant leap towards a brighter, medication-free future. The journey is ongoing, and Dhiren’s determination keeps him on the path to lasting well-being.

24 things to do in 2024

As the dawn of 2024 approaches, it’s time to embrace a year of transformation with open arms and an open heart. This is not just another lap around the sun but a fresh canvas awaiting our colorful strokes of change. It’s a call to action, a challenge to ourselves to make the most of every moment with 24 enriching activities that promise to enhance our well-being, expand our horizons, and enrich our lives. From the simplicity of saving a few rupees to the grandeur of exploring uncharted territories, each task is a step towards a more fulfilling year. So, let’s embark on this journey of self-improvement and make 2024 a testament to growth, health, and happiness.

  1. Save money – even if it is just Rs. 50 daily but get a piggy bank, start saving from 1st day of 2024.
  2. Try different foods – there are so many varieties – Indian as well as exotic that we haven’t even heard or seen before. Do give them a try!
  3. Leave 1 bad habit – Changing unhygienic habits, Shouting / yelling at anyone or something more challenging.
  4. Plant a seed – Lazy ones should try, as it makes you responsible, you learn something new and are a part of making an ecofriendly surrounding.
  5. Feed any animal – If you can’t pet an animal, try doing this. Get a packet of biscuits every evening to feed the stray dogs outside your colony. Feeding milk to cat or water and grains to the birds also can be done.
  6. Gift your self – treat yourself with something you have been wanting since weeks.
  7. Self-Health Care – we don’t even bother to go for a checkup unless and until we have a problem. This year we are going to make a difference.
  8. 1 hour no phone – this 1 hour is your “me time” in this hour you can revise your whole day / meditate / prepare yourself for the upcoming day / do whatever you like.
  9. Start reading again – And I mean paper back books, not a Kindle.
  10. Some healthy intake – chamomile / green tea / moringa powder / ACV / 1 tsp ghee – trust me you will not regret this decision !
  11. Do what you have not done before – I am going to try aerial yoga this year. You can do anything that you have never done before.
  12. Walk – I don’t have to brief the benefits here, you do it and you will see a change in your overall health !
  13. Weekend activity – I am going to learn driving this year on weekends, why don’t you try swimming, cooking or dancing ??
  14. Go on a vacation – 2024 demands growth, so lets decide to explore a new city or country this year !
  15. Develop 1 spiritual habit – This way you are going to sync your health and energy with the universe.
  16. Family Time – try to have atleast 1 meal with your family daily with talks and no electronics around.
  17. Call that long lost friend or cousin of yours and bond again over a cup of Chai and Charcha!!
  18. Learn a new language/ word daily – send your brain to the gym.
  19. Keep yourself well hydrated – I mean by water, not caffeine or alcohol!
  20. Revise your diet before you enter 2024 – see where you are going wrong and do not repeat that mistake again in 2024. take baby steps to correct your plate and palate
  21. Do nothing for the whole day!
  22. Do not buy this – Check your list of things you’ve bought frequently this year and avoid buying them next year completely.
  23. Get sunlight – Investing 10 mins daily to get a sun bath.
  24. If you are procrastinating something – 2024 is the right time to do it!

As we bid adieu to a year spent well, committing to 24 life-affirming activities, we reflect on the progress we’ve made. Each small change, from the coins clinking in our piggy banks to the new languages that now dance on our tongues, has contributed to a larger metamorphosis. Our endeavors in 2024 have not just been tasks ticked off a list but milestones on a journey of personal evolution.

We stand at the threshold of the future, not as the people we were, but as the sum of our experiences, our learned habits, and our savored moments. Let’s carry forward this spirit of proactive living and make every year better than the last. Here’s to a 2024 well-lived, and to the many more years that will echo the positive changes we’ve embraced!
