Healthy Eating Tips To Detox The Body

detox the body

Are you looking to detox your body before the Navratri festivities begin? If you’re planning to indulge or go off your healthy routine for a while, it would be great to take these few days to detox the body. It is a good opportunity to give your body a break. Take these steps to detox the body, clean out your GI tract and provide your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive. You can also follow these steps post festivities.

What is Detoxification?

Detoxification is the process of cleansing our body from chemicals, waste, toxins, and harmful substances. Our body has its own internal detoxification system through our liver, kidneys, colon, skin, lungs and lymph glands. However, when our body becomes overloaded with toxic substances, such as from pollution, a poor diet of fast food, alcohol, medications, illness and stress, it needs help in rebooting so it can function optimally again.

In essence, detox is all about eating a diet that supports and improves the functioning of our liver. Unlike popular belief, detoxification is not about weight loss alone. It’s mainly about helping and supporting your body to get rid of all the waste through proper dietary choices. It is beneficial for one and all.

Who Needs To Detox The Body?

Anyone who is suffering from unexplained fatigue, dull skin and hair, allergies, tired and puffy eyes, menstrual irregularities, and feelings of anxiety and depression. This also includes people suffering from constipation as it’s likely to be a result of harmful toxins lingering in your body, preventing the absorption of essential nutrients – and when this happens your immune system will not fight bacteria efficiently resulting in colds and flu most often.

Benefits of Detox

  • Removes toxins from the body
  • Improves digestive health: The digestive system is one of the most critical areas of the body. It’s where nutrients from the food you consume are absorbed, keeping your body functioning as it should.
  • Mindfulness
  • Increase in energy
  • Control food cravings
  • Micronutrient bonus

What To Consume To Detox the Body?

1. Natural Detox Waters

  • Lemon water consumed with black salt immediately improves digestion, cleanses your liver and maintains PH levels of the body.
  • Coconut water has composition that mimics our plasma and helps clear out impurities from blood.
  • Water infused with cinnamon sticks overnight and having it the next day.
  • Water infused with cumin seeds, coriander seeds, ajwain and fennel seeds overnight and having it next day
  • Water infused with 1 inch ginger, slices of orange, mint/tulsi leaves overnight or you can simply use any sliced fruit and sliced vegetable and herbs.

2. Smoothies

  • Green Smoothie: Grind cucumber, parsely, celery, pineapple and chia seeds together and have it replacing your breakfast
  • Green Juice: Grind kale, spinach, broccoli, mint leaves, apple/pineapple and have it in your mid meals
  • Mango Smoothie: Grind 1 mango with almonds and have it replacng your breakfast
  • Apple Date Smoothie: Grind 1 apple, 2-3 dates, water and mint leaves and replace it with your breakfast.
  • Orange Banana Smoothie: Grind banana and orange or strawberry and banana with 1 tbsp of yogurt and ice cubes and replace it with breakfast.

3. Soups

  • Lemon and Coriander Soup (you can add chicken if you’re a non-vegetarian)
  • Beetroot and carrot soup
  • Tomato and carrot soup
  • Zucchini and broccoli soup
  • Green moong soup
  • Spinach and carrot soup
  • Egg soup
  • Corn soup

4. Salads

  • Sprouts salad
  • Moong salad
  • Green salad

Replace your aloo paratha with moong chilla and your maida pancakes with oats pancakes. Avoid milk and milk products, refined flours and oils, breads, pasta, sugar, fried foods, packaged foods, pickles, papad and junk food. Once a month try doing a complete detox by replacing your meals with smoothies, soups, salads, chillas and infused water. Make the most of this precious time by cleansing your body.

How Garlic Can Help Boost Your Immunity

garlic

At some point you might have observed how some people rarely fall ill and even if they do fall ill, they recover in no time. Whereas, some people belonging to the same gender, age, and sometimes even same family, fall sick frequently and take time to recover. Ever wondered why? The answer is simple – immunity! We’re well aware that the immune system defends our body against infections and a compromised immune system can’t protect us! Hence, we must focus on building good immunity! This can easily be achieved with the food we eat and one of the foods that can help us is Garlic!

Garlic is loaded with nutrients, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, antifungal and antioxidant properties. Studies have shown that it can enhance immune cell function which reduces the severity of an infection.

Benefits of Garlic

  • It contains allicin, which acts as an immunity booster and an antioxidant that helps stop infections, and the spread of bacteria and air-borne viruses.
  • It is beneficial to your digestive health. A healthy gut enhances our immune system and reduces the risk of infection.
  • It supports your liver to effectively carry out detoxification.
  • It contains vitamin B & C, that fights off cold and cough.
  • It has proteins, minerals, the sulfur-containing compounds alliin, ajoene, daily sulfide and dithiin, and different enzymes, which makes garlic a “Healing Powerhouse”.

How Do You Use It In Your Diet?

You can enjoy garlic’s nutrients by slicing or crushing a whole clove and eating it raw, immediately, as allicin is unstable and loses its medicinal properties quickly.

You may also try adding raw crushed or chopped garlic, to:

  • Salad dressings
  • Soups as a garnish
  • Vegetable smoothies with other herbs
  • Peanut butter and apply on roti
  • Curd or vegetable raita
  • Coriander/mint chutney

Please note that cooking may cause loss of health benefits due to high temperatures. However, it was noted that crushing it and allowing it to stand for 10 minutes before cooking and by increasing the amount of garlic used in a recipe, one can compensate for the loss of its medicinal properties.

One can also go for garlic supplements like powdered garlic, aged garlic extract and/or garlic oil. However, one needs to be cautious, since there are no regulated standards for its supplements. You can also go for 2-3 raw garlic cloves a day.

A word of caution here is that garlic might reduce your platelet aggregation. People with serious bacterial/viral infections or taking anticoagulant medication/blood thinners need to be cautioned about consuming it. So consult your doctor, nutritionist or dietitian before adding it to your meals.

How To Fight Junk Food Cravings While Working From Home

Fight Junk Food cravings

While working from home, it’s quite easy to get swayed by all the delivery options we have around home. That favorite fast food chain, greasy burgers at the corner of the road and pizzas with extra cheese! Sounds breathtakingly delicious but gorging on all this junk food can be detrimental to your health. When we indulge in junk food, especially at home where we get little to no physical activity, our body gets a sense of pleasure, often due to the salty or sweet nature of these foods. The neurotransmitters of our brain make us want to keep coming back for more. So how can you fight junk food cravings?

Simple Tips To Fight Junk Food Cravings

Whether you’re working from home or you’re back at the office, here are some simple tricks to help you avoid these cravings.

  • No skipping meals: The work from home scenario has led to irregular eating habits. When the stomach growls with hunger, we automatically reach out for our phones and end up ordering for food. Sticking to preparing and eating food at the same time every day can help you manage these cravings effectively.
  • Stock healthy food: like fruits and dry fruits. Have dates and anjeer if you have a sweet craving and popcorn and makhana for salty cravings. When healthy food is available , you will eat healthy. In fact, try this Ultimate Healthy Chivda recipe!
  • Soups: Soup is a perfect blend of health and taste. Since it contains a good amount of stock, it helps to bring satiety. A hot cup of soup in the evening is a good way to curb hunger and avoid junk food. You can try some of these Healthy Soup Recipes!
  • Protein rich food: One of the lesser known reasons for that unsatisfied hunger pangs is lack of protein in the diet. Most junk food is made up of simple carbs which fills as well as empties the stomach quickly. Protein on the other hand, provides fullness and as a result, we can easily ride over that wave of junk food craving. Cottage cheese, Greek yogurt and eggs are protein rich snacks.
  • Hydration: There’s a difference between hunger and thirst. Majority of the time when hunger strikes, it could just be thirst.
  • Stress: can be a major underlying factor for faulty eating habits. If we fix the stress part first, junk food cravings will be easy to manage.
  • Sleep: When we are deprived of sleep, the craving for junk food increases. So catching up with 6-7 hours of sleep on a daily basis, and not just weekends, can go a long way in controlling these unwanted urges to eat and overeat.

Try these tips to fight junk food cravings and we’re sure you will see visible changes to your health and lifestyle. Small, consistent efforts go a long way. Do let us know if this helped in the comments below!

How To Build Immunity To Safeguard Against COVID & Other Monsoon Illnesses

monsoon illnessesCOVID-19 should not be considered as the only disease that will attack our body during monsoon. You can be susceptible to other monsoon illnesses such as vector borne ones like dengue, malaria, seasonal influenza (H1N1) and Chikungunya. You need to understand that not all fever is COVID-related. It could also be Typhoid, Jaundice, Malaria or Common Cold. While these deadly diseases are all around us, the only best measure to safeguard ourselves is “Immunity”.

Tips To Build Immunity & Safeguard Against COVID & Other Monsoon Illnesses

We are well aware of the symptoms of common diseases and everything should not be related to COVID-19. This constant fear will not let us differentiate between other diseases. Here are some points you can look at to manage monsoon illnesses.

  1. Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face. Any infection, be it viral, bacterial or fungal, might be contagious. Maintaining self-hygiene is important.
  2. Take enough morning sunlight: Between 7am to 11am suits the best as UV rays are not very harsh at this time.
  3. Avoid oily and greasy food: We tend to eat stuff like pakodas and fried items during monsoon. Instead, choose healthy options like hot soup, green tea, ginger tea with popcorn and roasted lotus seeds.
  4. Good sleep: At least 7-8 hours of undisturbed sleep to rejuvenate our body.
  5. Exercise regularly: Minimum of 15 mins of exercise and daily walks to be incorporated in routine.
  6. Load up on antioxidants: Eat well washed bright coloured yellow and orange fruits and green leafy vegetables, as they are rich in antioxidants.
  7. Flush your system well with water: A minimum of 2.5-3L of water is a must. Be it in any form like coconut, lime, infused with fruits or spices, green tea and concoctions.
  8. Strengthen your gut: With pre and probiotics, like curd, pickles, fermented foods and kimchi.
  9. Increase protein intake: To prepare your body and avoid weaknesses.
  10. Respect Indian spices: Spices are rich in minerals and antioxidant properties. They help flush sinus infections too!
  11. Detox your body: With fasting, which gives rest to our digestive system to improve the performance of other organs. This should be under supervision if diabetic or indicative of other comorbidities.

You should be fine as long as you follow the above 11 pointers. If you show any symptoms, it’s best to consult with your doctor before panicking. Certain illnesses like cold, fever and diarrhoea are common during the monsoon. Check with an expert and avoid self-medication. It would be wise to check your blood oxygen levels (SpO2) from time to time as well. You can use the GOQii Smart Vital that has sensors to detect body temperature, SpO2, blood pressure and heart rate.

We hope this article helps you. If you find these tips useful, let us know in the comments below! For more on managing COVID, you can check out Healthy Reads or tune in to classes by experts on GOQii Play.
