However, with a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition, in the absence of disease, one can still manage to have a plump skin. If you feed your body with the right kind of food, it radiates right on the skin. Let’s look at some foods to get that younger looking skin you’ve always wanted!  

Foods For Younger Looking Skin

  1. Water: As simple and feeble as it may sound, water is the most important component of a skincare regime. In all forms, whether luke warm, chilled or infused, water is the most effective tool for younger looking skin and to fight any skin abnormalities. It cleanses the excess metabolites and harmful substances that may accumulate beneath the layers of skin. Water helps keep the skin moisturised and flush out infectious agents.
  2. Berries, Melons and Citrus Fruits: Berries are natural chemical exfoliators. They contain salicylic acid which is a popular ingredient in beauty products known for anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Berries are also rich in Vitamin C and ellagic acid that can help reduce acne. Rich in Vitamin A, C and B, melons can prove to be effective in maintaining good skin health. They can also improve your digestive system and prevent constipation. This, in turn, aids in clearing up the skin. Melons are also effective in treating psoriasis, a dry skin condition that causes itchy, flaky and red patches of skin. The rich Vitamin C content of citrus fruits can effectively fight free radical action, which prevents skin ageing. Citric acid helps curb the bacterial action and pathogens present under the skin. As we age, our body’s ability to produce collagen decreases and the elasticity of the skin too. Vitamin C helps repair and rejuvenate the skin, helping in wound healing and building connective tissue, leading to younger looking skin.
  3. Turmeric (Curcuma Longa): Being the most potent spice, Turmeric helps fight cell damage, chronic disease and aging, helping maintain younger looking skin. All this due to the powerful pigment, curcumin.
  4. Nuts and Seeds: Nuts are densely packed with a variety of skin healthy nutrients such as proteins, vitamin E, essential oils, minerals, and antioxidants. Soaked almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds and sesame seeds are the richest sources of vitamin E – which are very helpful to protect the skin from the UV rays of the sun. Vitamin E also helps strengthen your skin, avoid skin infections and give it a radiant glow.
  5. Dark Chocolate: contains cocoa flavanols. These are very potent antioxidants that protect the skin from the oxidative damage caused by pollution or sunlight. It also protects the skin by enhancing blood flow, which helps by nourishing and moisturizing it. Make sure to choose only dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa in it.
  6. Tomatoes: Tomato and tomato juice are high in lycopene, a natural carotenoid that fights pigmentation and darkening due to ageing or stress.
  7. Virgin Coconut Oil: Used in cooking, it slows down the aging process by lowering oxidative stress and relieving pressure on the liver, it nourishes the skin and hair to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and clears dark patches and cellulite.
  8. Avocados: are high in monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fats that are essential to nourish the skin and prevent dryness. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory to keep the immune system effectively functioning. The lutein and zeaxanthin in this fruit may help to protect the skin from UV damage. It is also full of Vitamins A, B, C, E, and K which helps you get the glow of younger looking skin.
  9. Leafy Greens: Spinach, Collard greens, Radish greens and Kale are excellent for replenishing tired skin and dark under-eye shadows due to their high iron and magnesium content. These leafy greens are rich in Vitamin K that improve skin cell regrowth for a better complexion.
  10. Cucumbers: are more water than anything else. Oh so hydrating! Thus, they possess an extraordinary cooling effect. The peel of a cucumber contains antioxidants, Vitamin C and K, which can aid in skin whitening and can also reduce the appearance of fine lines. Sleep Deprivation Linked To High Calorie Food ChoicesThere is more science supporting the fact that getting a good night’s rest is best for your health. A new study published in the journal Food Product Design, by Author Colin Chapman, MSc, of Uppsala University says that people who were deprived of one night’s sleep purchased more calories and grams of food in a mock supermarket the following day. Sleep deprivation leads to increased blood levels of ghrelin, a hormone that increases hunger. However, there was no correlation between individual ghrelin levels and food purchasing, suggesting that other mechanisms such as impulsive decision making may be more responsible for increased purchasing.

What Did The Study Find?

The Uppsala University of Sweden is the oldest university of the Nordic countries and offers courses in Science and Technology, Medicine, Humanity and Social Sciences. Researchers at Uppsala University investigated whether sleep deprivation may impair or alter an individual’s food purchasing choices based on its established tendency to impair higher-level thinking and to increase hunger.

They hypothesised that sleep deprivation’s impact on hunger and decision making would make for the ‘perfect storm’ with regard to shopping and food purchasing – leaving individuals hungrier and less capable of employing self-control and higher level decision making processes to avoid making impulsive, calorie-driven purchases.

On the morning after one night of total sleep deprivation, as well as after one night of sleep, the researchers gave 14 normal-weight men a fixed budget (approximately $50). The men were instructed to purchase as much as they could out of a possible 40 items, including 20 high-caloric foods and 20 low-caloric foods. The prices of the high-caloric foods were then varied to determine if total sleep deprivation affects the flexibility of food purchasing. Before the task, participants received a standardised breakfast to minimise the effect of Hunger on their purchases.

Sleep-deprived men purchased significantly more calories (+9%) and grams (+18%) of food than they did after one night of sleep. The researchers also measured blood levels of ghrelin, finding that the hormone’s concentration was higher after total sleep deprivation; however, this increase did not correlate with food purchasing behavior.

Their finding provides a strong rationale for suggesting that patients with concerns regarding caloric intake and weight gain should maintain a healthy and normal sleep schedule.

Is There A Link Between Sleep Deprivation and Weight Gain? 

Findings from a study published in the journal Nature Communications found that losing sleep can make you more likely to crave junk food rather than healthy food. Other studies have linked poor sleeping habits to increased appetites.

Results from the study show that sleep deprivation significantly decreased activity in appetitive evaluation regions within the brain during food desirability choices, combined with increased activity in the amygdala. This change in brain activity is further associated with an increase in the desire for weight gain promoting high-calorie foods following sleep deprivation.

Foods To Eat During Navratri For Better Immunity

navratri fastingNavratri is one of the most celebrated festivals in India and the ways of celebrating it are different in each part. In North and Western India, 9 days of fasting is kept. In Southern India, fasting is not strictly followed but food is made omitting onion and garlic. In Bengal and other parts of Eastern India, along with fasting, Durga Puja is celebrated on a large scale. Also, the much awaited Gujarati special Dandiya and Garba is celebrated during Navratri. Navratri fasting rules vary in all the communities.

Along with fasting, it’s important to keep an eye on our immunity to ensure we stay healthy. Below is a list of foods that can be consumed during Navratri and will help in boosting immunity at the same time.

Below is a list of foods which can be consumed during Navratri and will help in boosting immunity at the same time.

  1. Water chestnut flour (Singhare ka atta): Singhara is very beneficial because it has refreshing properties. It is rich in protein, iron and magnesium. It has antioxidant properties, treats urine infection, cures indigestion and nausea, relieves cough, helps to combat hypertension, improves the blood and is beneficial for the skin and hair. 
  2. Special rice for fasting made with Millets (Sama ke chawal): It is high in calcium, potassium, digestible fiber, phosphorus and amino acids. Sama Rice is gluten free and has less calories and sugar. Hence, it can be consumed by a diabetic person. It is also a rich source of minerals and vitamins, providing essential ingredients.
  3. Buckwheat flour (Kuttu ka atta): It is a rich source of B Vitamins which improve the skin health and overall functioning of organs. It is immensely rich in fiber – which is extremely important for cleansing the digestive tract. Rich in essential fatty acids, kuttu helps maintain blood pressure and cholesterol levels. To avoid any side effects because of its warm potency, add curd to its flour.
  4. Amaranth Flour (Rajgira ka atta): It is the only grain which contains Vitamin C. It is full of antioxidants, Vit E, Protein, Iron, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium. Has twice the amount of calcium as milk, thereby reducing the risk of osteoporosis. It is good for Diabetes and improves Cholesterol levels.
  5. Sago (Sabudana): contains an abundance of Calcium and Vitamin K in it. These two contents make it the perfect food for maintaining bone health and building muscle. It helps in treating anemia and controlling High blood pressure. It is a great source of energy, that is why most of the people opt for it during fasting.
  6. Lotus seeds (Makhana): are low in calories and high in fiber. That’s why it is recommended for diabetic patients too. It regulates appetite, controls untimely cravings, improves gut health, and has an anti-ageing effect. 
  7. Colocasia (Arbi): It is rich in Fiber, has anti-cancer properties and reduces risk of heart health. They are an excellent source of Vitamin C and promote eye health. Helps in delaying the aging process, improves the skin and reduces fatigue.
  8. Nuts and seeds: are an amazing source of many nutrients. Loaded with antioxidants, contain good fats and are rich in fiber. Just a handful of them provide a punch of vitamins, minerals and fats, all of which work together to improve overall health. Include flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, peanuts, cashews, etc. but avoid salted or masala variants and do not consume them if you have allergies to nuts.
  9. Milk, curd and yoghurt: Low fat dairy products cut calories, saturated fat and cholesterol, while protein, calcium, and most other vitamins and minerals remain high in them. It is a good source of Vitamin D. It improves both Dental and Bone health. A glass of plain milk is equivalent to one small meal.
  10. Seasonal fruits: are naturally low in fat, sodium, and calories. Neither of them have cholesterol. They are packed with fiber and micronutrients. They are a good source of antioxidants and Vitamin C – which means better immunity! 
  11. Coconut water and fresh lime water: are the best way to prevent dehydration and are nutrient dense at the same time. They are low in calories, high in Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium. They are energy boosters and a great source of Vitamin C.
  12. Sendha namak ( Rock Salt) and Arrowroot flour: Rock salt provides all the essential trace minerals and greatly improves the body’s immune system. It helps in stabilizing blood pressure because of low sodium content. Arrowroot is a gluten free, powerhouse of B Vitamins and it improves digestive health.
  13. Spices and herbs: vary in all the households. Black pepper powder, coriander leaves, green chillies, shredded coconut flakes can be used to maintain good health! 

Before trying the above food, remember that portion control is a must. Too much of anything can have a negative impact even if that food is good for you. Don’t indulge and overeat. Avoid deep frying completely. Shallow frying or pan frying is still permissible. The best method of preparing these foods is steaming, roasting, sauteing and grilling!

While it is difficult to find foods which prevent diabetes complications like heart disease, kidney disease, spiking blood sugar levels, etc. there are some foods for diabetics which can help reduce carbohydrate intake, which in turn keeps blood sugar in check. Let’s take a look at these foods for diabetes. 

Top 10 Foods For Diabetics 

  1. Cinnamon: This fragrant golden spice helps in controlling sugar, cholesterol and triglyceride levels in Type 2 Diabetes. It adds flavour to food, can be sprinkled on tea, coffee, oatmeal and smoothies, etc. Studies have shown just ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon daily can improve fasting blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity.
  2. Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Extra-virgin olive oil contains antioxidants called polyphenols which are extremely beneficial for heart health. Olive oil is the best option for  MUFA source when it comes to managing diabetes. Several studies have shown that MUFA helps to keep blood sugar in check by lowering insulin resistance and it keeps you full, minimizes blood sugar spikes, and helps in good absorption of nutrients. Daily healthy intake for a Diabetic person can be 1-2 tsp (5ml-10 ml) to manage sugar levels.
  3. Nuts: are the best snacking foods for diabetics as they are delicious and nutritious. Nuts like walnuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios are a boon for diabetics as they are low in carbohydrates and high in protein and fat, which makes them good for stabilizing blood sugar. Due to high in protein and low in digestible carbs they help to reduce blood sugar and LDL levels. A Diabetic person can have a small handful of approx. 20-30 gm daily. But be sure to avoid salted varieties of nuts.
  4. Beans: are complex carbs loaded with fiber and rich in protein which gives a feeling of satiety. Beans are not expensive at all, easily available and they are incredibly versatile. Having beans in the diet regularly can control blood sugar and lower blood pressure. You can add beans in your salads, soups, veggies and sandwiches or use soaked/boiled beans in various recipes. Include one bowl daily which is approximately  25-30 gm of beans to regulate blood sugar levels.
  5. Quinoa: is considered as a complete protein because it contains all nine essential amino acids needed to build muscle and it is rich in minerals such as iron and magnesium. This protein-rich whole grain is a great substitute for white rice. It is rich in fiber and gets digested slowly, which keeps the stomach full and prevents blood sugar spikes. It is a healthy option for breakfast, snacks and effective in weight loss too. Daily  20-30 gm of Quinoa can be taken in different ways like salad, or mixed with vegetables, etc.
  6. Fenugreek Seeds: are very effective in treating people with diabetes. It is rich in soluble fiber which lowers the sugar levels by slowing down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates. Studies have shown a daily dose of 10 gm of fenugreek seeds soaked in water helps to control Type 2 Diabetes.
  7. Oatmeal: is one of the best foods for diabetics as they can fit into any healthy meal plan. They are high in fiber and low in glycemic index. It does the miraculous job in regulating blood sugar levels and increases energy levels. Steel-cut oats approx. 20 gm-30 gm daily with low-fat milk or vegetables are best for Type 2 Diabetes because they are least processed.
  8. Garlic: is a herb which reduces inflammation, blood sugar, LDL Cholesterol in people who have Type 2 Diabetes. It also reduces blood pressure and boosts immunity. 1-2 cloves of Garlic can be crushed and taken raw with water early morning or can be used while cooking.
  9. Turmeric is a very powerful spice with numerous health benefits. It helps to lower inflammation, reduce blood sugar and boost immunity. It has curcumin which benefits kidney and heart health in diabetics. It is an important ingredient in Indian cuisines, around ½ to ¼ tsp can be added in water or milk to reduce inflammation, boost immunity and regulate blood sugar levels.
  10. Chia seeds: are the powerhouse of nutrients and are one of the wonderful foods for Diabetics. They are high in fiber which lowers blood sugar in diabetics and helps maintain healthy weight. It also decreases blood pressure and inflammation in the body. Take 10gm of soaked chia seeds daily, can be also added in a smoothie, shake, curd etc.
