How to Create a Better and Healthy India

women's healthA young woman, who seemed slightly on the heavier side, approached me on the walking track at the Coimbatore-Race Course. She asked for tips on health management and weight reduction, even suggesting that I create a group to help with these goals. This encounter inspired me to share my thoughts in this blog.

Creating awareness among women about the importance of staying physically fit is the first step towards building a healthier India. In my opinion, healthy women are the cornerstone of healthy societies. Health and fitness are two sides of the same coin, both essential for living a healthy and happy life.

While women excel in many areas, taking care of their health is often not one of them. The reality is that women are more likely than men to neglect preventive health care. My conversations with women reveal that fitness is one of their top wellness challenges. But why is that?

Following are the commonly cited reasons by women as barriers to exercise:

  1. Women are too busy taking care of others to focus on themselves. Their dedication to family creates significant time and logistical barriers to being physically active. Many women juggle household responsibilities and jobs, leaving little time for their health or self-care.
  2. They may not have access to resources such as parks and gyms, and they often lack motivation and confidence to exercise.
  3. Reasons for weight gain may be attributed to the inheritance of genetic predisposition or caesarean sections undergone by them.
  4. Lack of energy is yet another factor as fatigue is a by-product of a tiring lifestyle and women are often tired.
  5. Women with low incomes are less likely to exercise regularly.  They do not realize that not all exercises require expensive clothes or a gym membership. One of the most beneficial forms of exercise is free – brisk walking!
  6. Mindset is yet another factor, as women feel that going outside for a walk or to hit the gym is not necessary for them.
  7. Breaking the laziness barrier is the main hurdle for most people irrespective of gender.
  8. Women feel that they are constantly being looked at by others when walking in public. They are reluctant and shy to wear jogging suits and walk with their cellulite jiggling appearance, as they feel that they will be laughed at. This is true especially among South Indian women as cultural factors play a major role in this part of India. The fear of judgement is greater than the women’s self-confidence.
  9. Women who believe that child-rearing and domestic chores are ‘women’s work’ are less likely to take time to exercise – perhaps they feel guilty taking time out for themselves. Sexism proves to be one of the barriers.
  10. Some others think that to be useful, exercise must be painful, sweaty and gruelling, which of course is not true.

How Can Women Improve Their Health?

Women, as health managers or promoters within their families, have a significant role in influencing overall family health. It’s time for women to prioritize their well-being and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

  • Lose weight if you are overweight, start with just 15 minutes of walking a day.
  • Eat a balanced diet. Cook healthy meals for yourself and your family instead of relying on takeout or processed foods.
  • Eat the right food in correct proportions at the right time as women have the habit of delaying their meal timings owing to the pressure of work.
  • Create time for walking as walking is considered the king of exercises. It offers numerous benefits without risking injury or stress on the body.
  • Regular Brisk Walking can help you maintain a healthy weight. It prevents and/or manages various medical conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.
  • Find a walking partner if you are not motivated to walk alone. For instance, your husband, parents, friends, relatives or your children. You can even join a local walking group.

Delaying simple aerobic exercise can lead to obesity and various health issues. Without proper awareness, women may feel lost when it comes to maintaining their health. By overcoming initial reluctance, women can adopt a balanced approach to fitness, directly influencing the well-being of their families. Women are the backbone of India, and their health is crucial to the nation’s well-being.

At any given age, physical fitness and exercise play a crucial role in leading a healthy lifestyle, especially for senior citizens. Whether you’re young or old, working out and keeping yourself active shouldn’t stop as exercise is important even when you’re a senior citizen.

Here are a few benefits of working out for Senior Citizens

  • Prevents Diseases & Chronic Conditions: Being regular with any kind of physical activity helps keep away diseases like diabetes, heart ailments and cancer.
  • Reduced Risk of Fall: With old age, the risk of falling increases, which can have a disastrous effect on being independent. Exercise improves the strength and flexibility of the body and as a result, it improves balance and coordination.
  • Improved Mental Health: Exercise induces endorphins – the happy hormone, which helps to feel good and keeps stress away. Exercise has a direct impact on sleep. Insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns which are common aspects with senior citizens is taken care of with regular exercise.
  • Social Engagement: Responsibilities reduce with age and so does the social life. Being regular with any kind of activity, be it yoga or a laughter club, helps to interact with people of the same age with similar problems. Now, they have their own tribe and this brings in confidence as it deals with depression and loneliness.
  • Better Cognitive Function: Fine-tuned motor skills improve cognitive functions which lower the risk of deteriorating memory, thinking, behavior and the ability to perform daily activities.
  • Keeps Weight in Check: Metabolism slows down in old age and as a result, losing weight becomes a challenge. Regular exercise helps in increasing metabolism and losing weight.

Get Started With an Activity

  • Walking: Be it brisk walking or a stroll in the park, walking improves stamina and makes you feel good!
  • Yoga: It helps in improving flexibility and mental health.
  • Workout at Fitness Studios: Use body weight to keep fit and meet like-minded people!
  • Swimming: Ideal for those having aching joints as it is not weight bearing. Swimming will help you tone your body and improve stamina.
  • Cycling: Low impact sport which is good for the cardiovascular system.
  • Resistance Bands: Improves muscle strength, balance, coordination and range of motion.
  • Laughter Clubs: Laughter is the best medicine. Visiting laughter clubs will help you stay positive and stress-free.

Points to be Kept in Mind:

  • Get a clearance from your Doctor about your fitness regime
  • Start with warm ups and end with cool down to prevent injuries
  • Always start slow and gradually increase the intensity
  • At any point if discomfort or pain is felt, stop immediately and consult your Doctor

Nutrition for Senior Citizens

Eating the right food in old age is very important as weak bones, lower immunity, poor digestion are all a part of the routine. Hence, eating healthy is very important.

Tips for Healthy Eating:

  • Have five to six small meals during the day to help in better digestion and absorption
  • Since appetite reduces with age, care should be taken to include sufficient proteins like whole grains, eggs, milk products, chicken, fish, etc.
  • Eat a good amount of fruits as they are rich in antioxidants
  • Including salads helps to keep constipation at bay due to their fiber content
  • Stay hydrated with sufficient amount of water
  • Avoid processed food

Sweet Corn: A perfect healthy snack

It’s the monsoon season, and one of the best snack during this time is roasted whole corn with a dash of lime, red chilli powder, and salt. For Mumbaikars, it’s a must have known as ‘Bhuta’.

Roasted corn is a healthier snack compared to fried fries, samosas or other unhealthy options typically chosen during the rainy season. So why is corn healthy? You will be surprised to know that this small kernel of corn is packed with nutrients and is a perfect snack to boost overall health.

Corn is rich in fibre and low in carbohydrates. A cup of sweet corn provides 3.5 grams of dietary fibre, keeping you full and aiding in with weight loss, making it a perfect mid-snack for weight watchers.

Yes! Even diabetics can enjoy it in controlled portions. Corn offers a source of complex carbs, providing your body with long-lasting fuel. Being a starchy food, corn’s carbs are broken down slowly, preventing sudden spikes or drops in blood sugar levels.

During monsoon, the digestive system tends to gets sluggish. The soluble fibre in corn keeps our gut healthy and helps prevent colon cancer too. Insoluble fibre prevents constipation and other intestinal problems by promoting soft and bulky stool that moves easily through the intestines.

Corn is a rich source of B complex vitamin, which increase mental ability and boosts memory. Its also a good source of Vitamin C, Niacin, Thiamine, Folate, and Potassium, which help prevent heart disease, hypertension, and lowers bad cholesterol.

This tiny food is loaded with Phytonutrients such as carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, responsible for its bright yellow colour, which improves eye health. Corn is packed with minerals like phosphorous, magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron, copper, and the trace mineral selenium.

Corn has good protein content, containing all amino acid except lysine and isoleucine. Make a corn salad with tofu or cheese or add some nuts, eggs or lentils to make it a complete protein snack.

Corn is rich in antioxidants, phenolic compounds, and ferulic acid, which have the capability to fight tumours in the breast and liver.

If you suffer from celiac disease or are gluten intolerant, corn is a safe vegetable for you to eat. It is naturally gluten-free, making it a great substitute for other ingredients.

Besides enjoying corn on the cob, steamed or roasted, try corn bhel, corn pizza, corn patties, baked corn, corn biryani or corn frankies.

Too lazy or in hurry? Just toss steamed corn kernels in an olive oil-salt-pepper-herbs dressing and enjoy it as you watch the rain go pitter-patter on the windows.

Word of caution

Remember, while sweet corn is a healthy treat, corn slathered in butter and doused in salt is not a healthy option.

So go ahead and enjoy this guilt-free snack!

Why Your Body Needs Curcumin or Turmeric Extract!

CurcuminMany mails, white papers and journals have been written on the power of turmeric extract, now termed as ‘Yellow Gold’ in the west. The fascinating part is that the consumption of Curcumin has been linked to positive benefits in almost every possible disease or ailment one can think of. From cancer to arthritis, to the possible prevention of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

How Curcumin Eases Disease

Cardiovascular Disease
Numerous studies show that it may have a protective role in cardiovascular diseases. Since cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death, one can argue that everyone should include turmeric in their diet, or perhaps take a turmeric supplement. One study discusses how the antioxidant effects of Curcumin may prevent diabetic cardiovascular complications.

The same study shows that the anti-thrombotic, anti-proliferative, and anti-inflammatory effects of Curcumin and the effect of it decreasing the serum cholesterol level may protect against the pathological changes occurring with atherosclerosis.

Another study demonstrates how dietary Curcumin is effective at inhibiting maladaptive cardiac repair and preserving cardiac function after ischemia and reperfusion. It also goes on to say that it has potential as a treatment for patients who have had a heart attack.

Diabetes
This, of course, also ties into cardiovascular health but there have been separate studies which show how Curcumin can help with diabetes. One study involved people in a pre-diabetic population who were taking Curcumin (or a placebo) for 9 months. The study concluded by showing that it significantly lowered the number of pre-diabetic individuals who eventually developed Type-2 diabetes. The same study also showed that it appeared to improve overall function of beta cells. Another study concluded that Curcumin supplementation could improve diabetes-induced endothelial dysfunction significantly. Yet, another study demonstrated how it attenuates diabetic neuropathic pain.

Asthma and Allergies
A few studies have shown that it might be beneficial for people with asthma and allergies. One study showed that Curcumin treatments markedly attenuated the inflammation in asthma by regulating T regulatory/Th17 balance. The findings supported the possible use of Curcumin as a therapeutic drug for patients with allergic asthma. Another study showed that it alleviates the pathological changes of chronic asthma, and might be a promising therapy for asthma in the future

Skin Diseases
It can even help with certain skin conditions! One study discusses how it protects the skin by quenching free radicals and reducing inflammation. The same study also mentioned how it reduces wound-healing time, improved collagen deposition and increased fibroblast and vascular density in wounds, thereby enhancing both normal and impaired wound-healing. The study concluded by suggesting that Curcumin might be a potent nontoxic agent for treating skin diseases. Another study suggests that Oral Curcumin might be beneficial in the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis, although it concluded by stating that large placebo-controlled studies are necessary before recommending Oral Curcumin as a psoriasis treatment.

Autoimmunity
To no surprise, because it can help greatly with inflammation, this herb can be extremely valuable in the treatment of certain autoimmune conditions, including Graves’ Disease and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Thyroid cancer is the most common type of cancer when it comes to the endocrine system. A recent study reported that Curcumin inhibits multiple metastasis steps of K1 papillary thyroid cancer cells. These findings showed that it might be effective for the treatment of aggressive papillary thyroid carcinomas.

Other Benefits
There are even more potential benefits of taking Curcumin. One study discussed how dietary Curcumin is a strong candidate for use in the prevention or treatment of major disabling age-related neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and stroke. Another study suggested that it has enormous potential in the prevention and therapy of cancer. It might also be useful as a treatment for ulcerative colitis as well as benefit people with osteoarthritis.
