Fitness is Self Realization! Dhanalakshmi Kollipara User Journey

user journeyDoes work occupy so much of your time that you don’t find any to keep yourself healthy? Being healthy and active is not about making drastic lifestyle changes or hitting the gym for 2 hours straight. Getting your health on track can be achieved with simple lifestyle changes. Here’s how Dhanalakshmi Kollipara made a switch to her lifestyle!

Life Before GOQii

An assistant manager at Tata Sky, Dhanalakshmi Kollipara from Mumbai is married and has 2 children. Fitness was always on her mind but after the birth of her second child, she had to just work on weight loss. She took a break from work, tried gyms and dieting to reduce weight. However, once she resumed work, being active took a backseat.

Introduction to GOQii

As an initiative of GOQii’s Corporate Wellness Program, Dhanalakshmi Kollipara received a GOQii Tracker along with 3-month subscription. The feature that she found the most alluring was the coaching feature which was absent with other trackers in the market.

After speaking to the GOQii Coach assigned to her, she wanted to set a realistic goal that she could achieve and didn’t want to go overboard. So she decided that her long term goal will be to lose 5-6kgs in 3 months.

Forming Habits and Lifestyle Change

To start her off on her journey, her GOQii Coach advised her to eat a pre and post workout snack. She was also asked to increase her water intake, complete 10k steps every day and walk or cycle for half an hour on weekends.

When Dhanalakshmi’s GOQii Coach explained the reason behind these habits to her, she was convinced and decided to follow them through. She liked the fact that the GOQii Coach’s recommendations were all doable and did not involve any drastic changes to her lifestyle.

She started with half an hour of walking for 4 days a week, 10 mins walk after lunch, taking stairs instead of the lift and taking a stroll every hour. This helped her achieve her 10k daily step count.

Another important habit introduced by her GOQii Coach was Intermittent Fasting, which is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. She continues this habit to date. She has observed this fast for 4-5 days a week for 16 hours. She eats her last meal at 5 PM and then directly eats breakfast the next day at 9 AM. She feels that this is what helped her reduce her weight by 3kgs at the end of her coaching subscription.

Her Experience with GOQii LIVE Coaching

She still continues with the habits set by her GOQii Coach. Although too occupied with work, she continues to do what she can manage.

About face to face coaching, she says that it is the optimum. She also feels that virtual coaching is still better than not having a coach at all. She avoids the internet or the “word of mouth gyaan” that people give and rather trusts the expertise of GOQii Play Coaches.

She usually watches GOQii Play videos on nutrition and medical topics and has currently subscribed to a GOQii Play coach plan for 12 months!

In closing, she says that “Fitness is self-realization and the motivation to follow through must come from within.”

We’re rooting for Dhanalakshmi Kollipara to complete her long term goal and #BeTheForce of a healthy lifestyle!

Healthy Eating: Skinny Sev Puri

healthy eating

Every now and then, we often pass a bhelpuri vendor and find ourselves tempted beyond measure. While the weather seems great and eating bhel or sev puri might seem harmless, it can give you enough calories which you will have to burn by being physically active for more than an hour.

More so, consuming any eatables from outdoor vendors during the rainy season might not be a good idea as this is the perfect season for the E Coli bacteria to breed. But yes, this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your favourite “Chaat” at home! I’ve prepared the perfect Skinny Sev Puri recipe that will leave you wanting for more!

It is called skinny because it won’t make you fat or sick!

What You Will Need

  • Cucumber – 1 Medium sized (thick slices)
  • Tomato – 1 Medium sized (finely chopped)
  • Onion – 1 Medium sized (finely chopped)
  • Freshly chopped coriander
  • Partially Boiled Sprouted Mung – ½ Cup
  • Curd – ½ Cup
  • Honey – 1 tsp
  • Green Chillies – 1 or 2 (finely chopped)
  • Crushed Khakhra – 2 tbsp
  • Salt, chat masala, red chilli powder – As per taste

How To Prepare Skinny Sev Puri

  1. Take a bowl and add the sprouted mung, curd, honey, tomato, onion, coriander, green chilies, salt, chat masala and mix well
  2. Take a plate and place the thick cucumber slices on it
  3. Using a spoon, place the mixed stuffing on the cucumber slices.
  4. Top it up with crushed Khakhara for crunch along with some chilli powder

So here is your very simple and healthy chaat recipe!

Please Note: As cucumber forms the base and if you are allergic to it, you can use tomato slices, zucchini, partially boiled beetroot slices or radish slices.

Highlights

  • It is a very low-calorie snack and helps you stay away from the trans-fat found in fried puris
  • It is rich in fiber and balanced protein
  • Can be prepared quickly and is perfect for people who love fancy mid meals

Why Chocolate Is So Good For You | World Chocolate Day

world chocolate day

Whatever be the season, whatever be the reason, the very thought of chocolate can make us lick our lips in eagerness. The sweetest day of the year, World Chocolate Day, sometimes called International Chocolate Day, is celebrated annually on July 7.

This day gives us the excuse to indulge in our favorite chocolate, be it milk, hot, a candy bar, a cake, brownies or something layered in chocolate. The world loves chocolate for there’s nothing a chocolate can’t do. It can lift your senses, turn your frown around, fix a heartache and can possibly turn a sad day into a good one!

Whether you’re happy, sad, celebrating, want to gift something- chocolates are what most of us prefer!

Sweet History of Chocolate

Chocolate may be the “food of the gods,” but for most of its 4,000 year history, it was actually consumed as a bitter beverage rather than the sweet edible treat it is known as today. The creation of the first modern chocolate bar is credited to Joseph Fry, who in 1847 discovered that he could make a moldable chocolate paste by adding melted Cocoa butter back into Dutch Cocoa. By 1868, a little company called Cadbury was marketing boxes of chocolate candies in England.

Science Behind Chocolates

We all remember the epic line from Forrest Gump – “Life is like a box of chocolates! You never know what you’re gonna get.” However, for chocolatiers, this statement may suggest more than chocolate variety. At the microscopic level, there is more than what meets the eye when it comes to the chocolate we consume.

Chocolate has its own temper, considered a polymorph, which means it can take on different shapes when it solidifies from a liquid form. It gives you the meltdown, to get into the desired shape and flavor. There are various types of chocolate – dark, milk, white and ruby being the most recent.

world chocolate day 2These are made with varying proportions of chocolate liquor, cocoa solids, cocoa butter, milk and sugar.  Cocoa is a source of flavonoids and alkaloids such as theobromine, phenethylamine and caffeine. These acts as stimulants to the central nervous system.

The Hormonal Connect

We crave chocolate because it is good! It tastes good, it smells good and it feels good when it melts in your mouth! And all of these ‘feelings’ arise because our brain releases chemicals in response to each chocolaty experience. The experience of eating chocolate results in feel-good neurotransmitters Dopamine.

Chocolate triggers the brain to release endorphins – hormones that cause your pulse to speed up and give you a pleasant high feeling, rather like being in love. Theobromine and Phenylethylamine in cocoa are also thought to affect levels of serotonin. This can boost your mood and ease depression.

We have to be grateful to the Mayans and the Aztecs for discovering the delight that the cocoa trees have to offer!

Feel like eating one? Go ahead! Today is World Chocolate Day and you must reap the benefits of this awesome treat to the senses.

Watch out for the second part of this blog!

Do leave your thoughts or your best chocolate moments in the comment section below!

“GOQii And I Are Inseparable For Life!” – Madela Bharathi

user journeyThere’s a myth that you can’t be fit and healthy if you’re a homemaker. Some say that it is difficult to look after your own health as you’re so focused on those you want to take care of. But if you have the determination, dedication and drive, nothing can stop you! Well, once you’re already fit, it is all about levelling up, just like our GOQii Player Madela Bharathi.

Madela Bharathi is a homemaker who lives in Vizag. She is 43, married and has two children, 17 and 19 years of age. She had always been fitness conscious and she ate healthy as well. Even as a homemaker, her goal was to get fitter, push her limits and go beyond them!

Already Fit? Level Up!

In August 2018, she got introduced to GOQii through her husband who is an employee at HPCL. They both wanted to participate in the GOQii Corporate Steps Challenge at HPCL. As a part of the onboarding process, she set her long term goals – to stay fit, live disease-free and improve sleep.

When she joined GOQii, her sole motive was to win the Corporate Steps Challenge at HPCL. She used to clock in 50k steps everyday. Walking had become an obsession for her as she wanted to be among the top 10 participants. Her routine only revolved around household chores and walking.

Although her family wasn’t pleased with her walking all day for the challenge, it didn’t deter her motivation to be on top! She saw this as a challenge she wanted to complete, a challenge she wanted to ace without looking back!

As a result, between August 2018 to December 2018, she reduced her weight from 52kg to 49.5kg. Seeing that there was no stopping her, her GOQii Coach asked her to increase her protein intake. She was advised to eat 6 eggs and Sattu along with normal home cooked meals.

During this time, her D3 and B12 levels had dropped and she was asked to take supplements for the same for 6 months.

Crushing Goals and Being on Top!

In November 2018, Madela Bharathi stood 7th place among the HPCL employees who had participated in the challenge. By December 2018, she was the only woman in the top 10. She stood 1st in Vizag and 2nd in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

She had even participated in the India Steps Challenge but was asked to stop walking completely by her GOQii Coach. That did not stop her from claiming 2 GOQii Vitals for herself!

Current Regime and Habits

As of now, fitness continues to be an addiction for Madela Bharathi. She works out watching GOQii Play Coach Aliya Imran’s classes within the GOQii app in the morning and evening. She used to be regular on all classes, tuning in and working out but has limited herself to ensure that she doesn’t overtrain and hurt herself.

Madela can hold an elbow plank for 5 minutes and 40 seconds, although she has challenged herself to extend it to 8 minutes. She practices deep breathing techniques suggested by GOQii Play Coach and Yoga Specialist Ronak Gajjar. Thanks to this, her sleep quality has improved immensely.

Her current habits include eating Halim Seeds soaked in water overnight, as soon as she wakes up. She eats a fruit before a workout and a dry fruits milkshake after. She also consumes Whey Protein Isolate and Sattu every alternate day.

What Are Her Thoughts on GOQii?

Madela Bharathi thoroughly enjoys Coach Aliya’s classes. She says that Coach Aliya has been the guiding force behind her motivation to stay fit, accept challenges and constantly keep pushing her limits.

She is happy with her GOQii Coach’s suggestions on nutrition. Consulting with her GOQii Coach helped her regularize her workout regime, got her aware about the nuances of different exercises, form, posture and nutritional support, etc.

“GOQii and I are inseparable for life now,” she says. Even though her husband discontinued with GOQii after the HPCL challenge, she has chosen to stick with GOQii, further adding that, “GOQii has become a means for me to do what I love best. I get all the guidance and information from coaches and cannot ask for anything more!”

Her future plan is to run a marathon and wishes to train for the same.

What Did Her GOQii Coach Have to Say?

Madela Bharathi is a perfect example of the quote, “Don’t Limit your Challenges, Challenge your Limits!” An enthusiastic woman who joined GOQii to challenge her active lifestyle and work on gaining some muscle mass to take her fitness to the next level.

Madela is a very disciplined woman who is always motivated to try a new habit every time. Be it healthy eating, or level up for workouts, she has always done an excellent job and done justice to the habit, which has definitely helped her in reaching her milestones.

She has always been regular with updating logs and activities on app with all her honesty. She always took my suggestions seriously and made sure that every call done ends up being fruitful. Madela, you truly are an inspiration to today’s women. No matter what the age, it is all about dedication.
