Top 5 Superfoods You Need to Start Eating Today!

top superfoods

If you check from a nutritional perspective, there is no such thing as superfoods. While this was a term used for marketing purposes to influence food trends, there is no denying the positive effects that some of these foods have on the body. The term “superfoods” is used to describe a food that is rich in a particular nutrient or other bioactive substances. Superfoods are steadily joining the wagon in India due to their numerous health benefits.

Here are 5 foods that may be worthy of the esteemed superfood title.

1. Indian Gooseberry (Amla)

It has a sour, astringent taste and sweet aftertaste. It is one of the richest sources of vitamin C (approx. 600-700mg per fruit). Along with antioxidants and immunity-boosting properties, it also has anti-ageing, anti-cancer, anti-diabetes properties and it also reduces menstrual discomfort. It is rich in pectin, a dietary fibre that regulates bowel movement and also treats scurvy. Amla powder is used in many hair tonics as it enriches hair growth, maintains hair colour, and improves lustre. It is also available in various other forms such as powder, juice, oil, tablet and spice. Click here to know more about the Indian Gooseberry!

2. Fenugreek Seeds

As demonstrated in various studies Fenugreek is rich in fibre and protein. Due to its valuable bioactive components, it has an anti-diabetic effect, it is loaded with antioxidants, and it is anti-carcinogenic, hypo-glycemic and has a cholesterol-lowering effect as well. It reduces weight and obesity, treats constipation and also acts as a Galactagogue i.e. it improves milk production in breastfeeding mothers. Fenugreek should be included in our daily diet. It can be used while cooking curries, vegetables, dals, and parathas, etc.

3. Garlic

The health benefits of garlic are numerous. These include anti-cancer, antibiotic, anti-hypertensive and cholesterol-lowering properties. It is also anti-diabetic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, anti-asthmatic. Garlic needs to be peeled, chopped or crushed and then consumed to activate its main component. It is also a source of prebiotics. Studies indicate that eating 2 cloves of garlic lowers cardiovascular disease risk. To know more about the benefits of Garlic, click here!

4. Green Banana Flour

It is made by drying unripe green bananas and grinding them into a fine powder. It has a mild nutty taste and has resistant starch which is undigested, thus beneficial for colon health and also aids digestion. It is gluten-free and can be substituted for wheat flour. It is ideal for weight watchers as it keeps the tummy full for a longer time. This prevents binge eating. As green banana is low in sugars, it is also diabetic friendly. It contains numerous vitamins and minerals.

5. Moringa / Drumstick

A highly overpriced superfood in the west, it grows abundantly in India. It is used mostly in sambhars, curries and cooked vegetables, both in rural and urban areas. WHO (World Health Organization) promotes this as an alternative food source to treat malnutrition. Moringa leaves are rich in minerals such as calcium, potassium, zinc, magnesium, iron and copper. Thus, it helps in treating anemia and boosts immunity. A single serving of Moringa contains about 3x the iron of spinach. Iron is essential to enriching the blood, energy and oxygen in our muscles and organs. It also works as a Galactagogue i.e. helps in inducing milk. It is highly recommended for pregnant women. 1 tsp of Moringa powder added to water or the leaves cooked into a vegetable or the drumsticks inner pulp consumed, can begin the process of adding health and nutrition to your life and everyone around.

These easily available superfoods can add to your health and well-being! Do consult your doctor before trying any of these foods to avoid allergic reactions, especially if pregnant.

Does Apple Cider Vinegar Really Promote Weight Loss?

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has gained a lot of popularity for its weight loss properties but the real question is, does it really help one lose weight? Before we delve deeper into that, let’s understand what ACV is.

What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

ACV is acidic in nature due to its main component of acetic acid. It is prepared by the fermentation of crushed apples. It is the acetic acid which has numerous health benefits. Some of these include:

  1. Helps controlling blood sugar levels: Acetic acid present in Apple Cider Vinegar can improve the ability of the liver to utilize sugar more efficiently from the blood.
  2. Decreases insulin levels: If the ratio of insulin and glucagon reduces, it helps in increasing the fat burning process. This is done by acetic acid.
  3. Helps in boosting metabolism: which increases the fat burning process.
  4. It reduces fat storage and suppresses appetite resulting in low intake of food.
  5. Controls blood pressure naturally
  6. Helps in reducing bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol (HDL).
  7. Alleviates the symptoms of PCOS.

What Does Research Say?

One of the researches done on humans (Japanese) states that Apple Cider Vinegar can really help in reducing weight and body fat.

Researchers gave 1 Tbsp (15ml) of ACV, 2Tbsp (30ml) of a placebo drink daily to 144 obese Japanese adults for 12 weeks, along with their usual diet and exercise routine. After 12 weeks, it was found that those who consumed 15ml of ACV per day reduced 1.2kgs, 0.7% of body fat, 0.5” of the waist and 26% Triglycerides. Those who consumed 30ml of ACV per day reduced 1.7kgs of weight, 0.9% body fat, 0.75” waist and 26% Triglycerides (same as 15ml).

On the other hand, those who were fed the placebo increased 0.4kgs and slight increment in waist circumference too.

So, the bottom line is that 1-2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar per day can lead to weight loss and the reduction in body fat percentage, belly fat, and blood triglycerides.

How Do You Add ACV to Your Routine?

Mix 15-30ml of ACV in a full glass of water. However, it is always advised to break the doses 2-3 times a day preferably, at least 15 mins before a meal. If you can’t drink it due to its pungent taste and smell, then it can be used:

  • As a salad dressing with olive oil
  • For pickling of vegetables

Please Note: Do not consume ACV directly. Always dilute before consuming to avoid burning of the throat and stomach lining due to the strong acid. Also, excessive usage of apple cider vinegar may be harmful due to the acid content. Always consume within the safe limits or else it may lead to the erosion of teeth enamel and loss of potassium.

Before you begin using Apple Cider Vinegar, do consult your doctor, nutritionist or dietitian. Want to try ACV? Get it from the GOQii Health Store here.

Lose Body Fat by Changing What You Eat

lose body fat

There are many of us who lead demanding and hectic lifestyles which are marred with extensive working hours, early mornings and late nights. In fact, late-night shifts affect our eating patterns a lot!

Due to erratic working patterns, processed foods, instant food items and junk food are in trend as they are easy to carry and can be ordered or eaten anywhere! People don’t carry home food as much and always eat food at work in a hurry, knowing that they are gulping their food without chewing.

If we pay a little attention to what we are eating and how we are eating it, it makes a big difference. The statement, “Lose body fat by changing what you eat” holds true in this context.

Can You Lose Body Fat with Food?

First of all, you have to see the natural foods around you which have the capability to help you lose body fat. Try including some of the following option in your daily meals.

  1. Whole Grains: contain a good amount of fiber and as they are complex in nature, they release carbohydrates slowly in the body. They need energy from the body to breakdown and in turn, help you lose fat. So, include brown rice, whole wheat flour, rolled oats, Ragi, Jowar, and Bajra over refined flour like maida, suji and white rice.
  2. Pulses & Legumes: are an excellent source of fiber and vegetable protein. Protein gives you a feeling of satiety which stops you from overeating and decreases your total calorie intake resulting in fat loss. Choose whole pulses like white & black chana, cow pea, kidney bean, sprouts and have them in at least two meals.
  3. Vegetables & Fruits: are excellent sources of fiber and are low in calories. They require a lot of energy to breakdown and some fibers don’t digest in human bodies. They need to be excreted and absorb fat from the body while doing so, thereby reducing fat and cutting down total calorie intake. Have at least 2-3 servings of fruits & vegetables. Their way of cooking can be changed like sautéing, steaming, baking, shallow frying, or roasting instead of deep-frying.
  4. Healthy Fats: can be obtained through nuts, fish & seeds to improve omega 3 fatty acid which is anti-inflammatory and helps in controlling visceral fat accumulation. Cut down your intake of all types of visible fats such as butter, ghee, oils and avoid refined oils. Instead, use soybean oil, sesame oil, mustard & groundnut oil.
  5. Water: increases the metabolism of the body by flushing out toxins and cleansing the liver. The best part? It has zero calories. Drink at least 2-3 litres of water a day.
  6. Tea: Replacing your tea with green, turmeric or lemon tea and avoiding or minimizing visible intake of sugar [1tsp of sugar (5gm) = 20 calories] helps you lose weight.

Meal timings are also crucial in shedding extra fat. This is because the metabolism of the body slows down as the day progresses. That’s why late-night eaters are prone to weight gain. Low calorie and nutrient-dense food can be chosen by late eaters.

Chewing your food properly also increases the rate of absorption of nutrients and avoids extra accumulation of fat. Practicing mindful eating i.e. eating by paying attention and noticing each sip or bite, tasting your food, teaches you to control your hunger and actually helps in weight loss.

We hope these tips help you lose body fat. For more on how adjusting food habits can help you lose weight, ask a GOQii Coach for guidance by subscribing for personalised health coaching here: https://goqiiapp.page.link/bsr

Should You Consider the Keto Diet?

keto diet

Lately, a lot of my patients have been asking me about the Keto Diet – if it is safe or if I would recommend it. Despite the recent hype, a Keto Diet isn’t something new. In medicine, we have been using it for around a 100 years to treat drug resistant epilepsy, especially in children.

The Keto Diet is a very low carbohydrate, high fat, adequate protein diet which had originally developed in the 1920s for managing intractable epilepsy. Later, it had been indicated in many other conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, Parkinson’s disease. In recent days, Keto Diet has become increasingly popular among people trying to lose weight.

The diet primarily aims at depriving the body of glucose and putting it in a metabolic state (ketosis), in which fats are burned to produce ketone bodies. These ketones are utilized as fuel for energy production instead of glucose. In order to create this state, the dietary carbohydrates are restricted to as low as 20-25g per day and the fat to carbohydrate ratio is typically kept at 4:1 or 3:1 ratio by weight. Because it lacks carbohydrates, it is rich in protein and fats. It typically includes plenty of meats, eggs, processed meats, sausages, cheese, fish, nuts, butter, oils, seeds and fibrous vegetables.

What is Ketosis?

Glucose is the preferred fuel, especially for the brain. Glucose is also required for the complete oxidation of the fats in TCA Cycle. In conditions of starvation or drastic carbohydrates restriction (below 20g/day), i.e. when glucose is not available, fats are broken down in an alternate pathway to produce ketone bodies. These ketone bodies are utilized by the brain and other tissues for energy production instead of glucose. This condition is known as Ketosis.

What Are The Effects of a Keto Diet on Weight Loss?

The effect of Keto Diet on weight loss has been attributed to several possible factors:

  • The appetite suppressing the action of ketone bodies by modification of hormones.
  • Reduction in the accumulation of fat (lipogenesis) and breakdown of fat (lipolysis).
  • Increased metabolic cost of gluconeogenesis (breakdown of fat or protein for glucose) and thermic effect of protein.
  • High satiating effect of fats which provides the feeling of fullness for longer hours.

Benefits of a Ketogenic Diet Beyond Weight Loss

Due to obesity, excess body fat is closely associated with insulin resistance. The metabolic disturbances associated with insulin resistance due to inefficient utilization of glucose are improved with low carbohydrate high-fat diets. These changes beneficially affect gene expression, improved resistant states, attenuate oxidative stress and inflammatory conditions.

Significant reductions in serum triglycerides, marked increase in HDL cholesterol and decrease in inflammatory markers have been observed with this diet.

Potential Risk of Following This Diet

Despite the metabolic benefits of Keto Diets, the severe carbohydrate restriction and huge fat content of the diet raises question regarding safety. The severe restriction in diet calls for inadequacies of several nutrients.

  • Selenium deficiency is noted which leads to abnormal cardiac rhythm and impaired myocardial functions.
  • Arterial stiffness, increase in LDL cholesterol occurs in about half the individuals on Keto Diet.
  • Although it might show improvements in certain cardiovascular parameters like increased HDL and lowered TGLs, this mostly in the short term. In the long term, it has been shown to cause Hepatic Steatosis (accumulation of fat in the liver), Dyslipidaemia and glucose intolerance in mice.
  • It affects calcium balance and bone health. Prolonged exposure to the acidic environment caused by the ketones in blood can lead to progressive loss of bone minerals.
  • In fact, Nephrolithiasis, a very commonly noted complication of the Keto Diet, can be attributed to increased urinary calcium which leads to stone formation.
  • High amount of fat in the diet gives rise to gastrointestinal tolerance issues which include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and GERD(Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease).
  • Other side effects include dehydration, Hypoglycaemia, Hyperuricemia, Pancreatitis, Ketoacidosis, low serum sodium and magnesium have been reported.

Practical Considerations To Be Taken

It is important to consider the total calorie intake, especially in context of weight loss. Reduction in total calorie intake is always important and not just replacing carbohydrate calories with fats.

With the above considerations, a modified Keto Diet can serve as an effective tool for weight loss with certain added metabolic advantage and can be advised to obese individuals having no other metabolic disorder for a limited period of time. This should, however, be followed up with a healthy and more balanced eating plan on the long term.

Please note that we do not advocate, advise or recommend fad diets to our players. Please reach out or consult your doctor, dietician or nutritionist before making changes to your diet.
