What Is Psoriasis and How Can You Manage It?

PsoriasisPsoriasis is a chronic skin disease characterized by red patches covered with white scales. The disease most commonly affects the skin of the elbows, knees, scalp, feet, and lumbosacral areas. It is a long-term autoimmune condition that accelerates the growth cycle of skin cells and causes inflammation due to immune system dysfunction.

Psoriasis tends to worsen during cold and dry seasons. While the exact cause of psoriasis is not fully understood, it is believed to result from various factors such as infections, obesity, certain medications, stress, alcohol abuse, endocrine disorders, severe sunburn, and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Most Common Symptoms

  • Dry or cracked skin that may bleed or itch
  • Small scaling spots, most commonly seen in children
  • Itching, burning, dryness or soreness
  • Thickened or pitted nails
  • Swollen or stiff joints
  • Crack on the soles of the feet
  • Recent changes in your life, such as illness or increased stress.

How Can You Manage It? 

Here are some effective tips to help you manage Psoriasis. 

  1. Limit Shower Time: Prolonged showers can increase moisture loss from the skin, making it irritated and dry, which should be avoided, especially in the case of psoriasis.
  2. Apply a Cool Compress: A cold compress, such as an ice or gel pack, can provide relief from itching associated with psoriasis.
  3. Salt Water Bath: Soaking in a saltwater bath helps soften scales and may ease inflammation and irritation. Add half a cup of Dead Sea salt to bathwater and soak for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Being overweight increases inflammation in the body. Regular exercise and a low-calorie diet can help. Include cardio, strength training, and stair climbing in your routine to reduce the risk of inflammation.
  5. Exposure to Sunlight: A deficiency in vitamin D can aggravate psoriasis. Moderate exposure to sunlight can help improve symptoms.
  6. Have Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): Thanks to its antiseptic properties, ACV may help alleviate itching or irritation, especially on the scalp. Mix 2 parts water with 1 part ACV, apply to the scalp, let it stay for 10 minutes, and rinse off with shampoo.
  7. Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated keeps your skin healthy and reduces the number and severity of flare-ups.
  8. Add Olive Oil in the Bath: Rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E, olive oil helps soothe irritated skin. Add 2 teaspoons to your bathwater or apply a small amount directly to the affected area.
  9. Apply Raw Glycerin to Affected Areas: Psoriasis often leads to dry, scaly skin. Applying raw glycerin hydrates the skin and alleviates symptoms. The best time to apply is before bedtime.
  10. Manage Stress: Stress can trigger and worsen psoriasis. Practice deep breathing, yoga, meditation, or engage in hobbies to stay stress-free.
  11. Good Quality Sleep: Poor sleep worsens psoriasis symptoms by increasing stress levels. Ensure you get enough quality sleep to allow your body to rejuvenate and repair itself.

11 Unhealthy Habits That Are Destroying Your Health

unhealthy habitsOld habits die hard and that’s true. Habits are stored in our subconscious mind. We keep on carrying out tasks or habits, without even realizing we are doing it. While some habits help us complete day to day activities, there are some which aren’t good for our health, especially the ones which affect our diet. It is crucial to follow habits which have a positive impact on health. It is time to identify unhealthy habits and get rid of them for good health’s sake.

Unhealthy Habits You Need to Stop 

  1. Skipping Breakfast: For some people, skipping breakfast is an easy way to cut calories. However, if you skip breakfast, you’ll probably overeat during lunch. Secondly, in the morning, our metabolic rate is high. To maintain it, we need to give enough fuel to our body in the form of breakfast. So you should not skip your morning meal at any cost.
  2. Emotional Eating: If you are stressed or if you’ve had a bad day, call a friend, listen to music, write in a journal or try going for a walk. These options are better than binge-eating junk food due to emotional reasons.
  3. Including Unhealthy Drinks: At some point, we all reach out for a soft drink after a meal. It has somehow become a norm. Sweetened/Aerated drinks increase your daily calorie intake and cause other health issues. Instead, drink lemon water, coconut water or buttermilk. In fact, you can make your own healthy energy drinks!
  4. Eating Out Frequently: Avoid the habit to grab something unhealthy when going out for a long day. Take healthier shortcuts! Eat a vegetable sandwich, protein salad, whole grain crackers & veggies with humus. You can even carry fresh fruits.
  5. Munching While Watching TV or During Long Drives: Try to avoid unnecessary munching while watching your favorite program or when you are on a long drive or a road trip. Instead of having processed foods like chips, cookies, etc. you can have a handful of nuts, air popcorn, seed trail-mix and unsalted peanuts.
  6. Lack of Sleep: Sleep works as nutrition for the brain. Our body needs 8-9 hours of sleep every night. Less than 8 hour of sleep triggers a cortisol spike and hampers our metabolism and contributes to weight gain. Shut your computer, mobile, and TV at least an hour before sleeping.
  7. Long Gap Between Meals: There shouldn’t be a huge time gap between meals. When you are on a weight loss journey, you shouldn’t just be careful about the food you eat but the time you eat as well! Many studies show that, if you are not eating at the right time, you might not be able to achieve your weight loss goals. The ideal gap between breakfast – Lunch & lunch –dinner should not exceed 4 hours.
  8. Eating Late at Night: You should not eat dinner very late as it promotes weight gain. Your last meal or your dinner should always be 3 hours before bedtime.
  9. Consuming Extra Salt: Eating a lot of salt can cause an increase in water weight and fat in your body. If you eat too much salt, extra water gets stored in your body which can raise your blood pressure.  Higher blood pressure leads to heart attacks, strokes and kidney diseases. Avoid sauces, pickles, sprinkling extra on salad & curd in your meals.
  10. Eating Heavy Meals Close to Bedtime: Avoid eating heavy meals close to bedtime, it can cause acidity, severe heartburn and make difficult to fall asleep. Also avoid tea, coffee, and chocolate in the evening because caffeine can stay in our system for 5-6 hrs and suppress the sleep hormone.
  11. Putting Calorie Restrictions: Eating more calories than your body needs will lead to weight gain. Whereas, eating lesser calories than your body needs will lead to weight loss. However, restricting calories too much may slow down metabolism, can cause fatigue, nutrient deficiencies and lower immunity too.

These 11 unhealthy habits can contribute to weight gain, affect metabolism and can be extremely detrimental to your health. Avoid them and adopt a healthier lifestyle. 10 Delicious recipes for festive ‘Makar Sankranti’

Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious days for the Hindus, and is celebrated in almost all parts of the country in myriad cultural forms, with great devotion, fervor & gaiety. On Makar Sankranti, the sun enters the sun-sign of Capricorn or Makara (Hindi name for Capricorn).

The word ‘Sankranti’ signifies the movement of the sun from one zodiac sign to another. Thus, the name of the festival literally means the movement of the sun into Capricorn. From this day, the duration of the day increases and that of the night decreases and winter recedes, paving the way for summer.

Millions of people take a dip in rivers like Ganga Sagar & Prayag and pray to the Sun god. It is celebrated in southern parts of the country as Pongal, and in Punjab is celebrated as Lohri & Maghi. Gujarati’s not only look reverentially up to the sun, but also offer thousands of their colorful oblations in the form of beautiful kites all over the skyline.

Gur/Jaggery and Til/Sesame seeds are one of the main ingredients used for making sweet dishes on this festival. Different recipes are made all over India ranging from lip-smacking sweet and savory dishes. I remember pouring in popcorn into the special bonfire lit up every year on the occasion of Lohri and shoving in raw potatoes and sweet potatoes in the fire once it was about to subside. For the delicious potato chats, we made with those firewood roasted potatoes!

Here is my collection of personally tried and experimented special dishes this year for Makar Sakranti. So put on your chef’s hat and exhibit your cooking skills!

1.   Jaggery Coated Caramelized Popcorn

You will need: Jaggery, unsalted popcorn kernels

Method:

  • Mix jaggery in little luke warm water. The amount of water should be just enough to soak the jaggery and make syrup of soft ball consistency.
  • Combine the popcorn and jaggery syrup and mix very well.
  • Let it cool completely and serve as a snack

2.    Kadhi Palak (Curdy Spinach and gram flour curry)

You will need: Gram flour/besan, chopped onions, Fenugreek leaves, Grated Ginger, Carom seeds (ajwain), chilli powder, salt, beaten sour yogurt, turmeric powder, fenugreek seeds, spinach leaves.

Method:

  • Blanch spinach leaves in hot water for 4-5 minutes and chop. Heat oil in a pan and add carom seeds (ajwain), sauté chopped spinach for 1 minute and keep it aside.
  • For the curd batter/kadhi: Whisk the yogurt well. Add the gram flour and whisk thoroughly till smooth. Add the turmeric powder, salt and three cups of water and mix well. Heat oil in a non-stick pan and add the fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds, red chilies, salt, ginger and sauté for a minute.
  • Stir in the yogurt mixture, bring to a boil and cook on low heat for about fifteen to twenty minutes, stirring occasionally. Add chili powder and sautéed spinach, and continue to simmer for two to three minutes.
  • Serve hot with steamed rice.

3.     Sesame Seeds and Jaggery Balls (Til Aur Gur Ke Ladoo)

You will need lightly roasted sesame seeds, jaggery, dried and grated coconut, cardamom powder.

Method

  • Grind lightly roasted sesame seeds and jaggery to a coarse mixture using a mixer or a mortar and pestle.
  • Transfer the mixture onto a plate, add dried coconut and green cardamom powder and mix well.
  • Divide this mixture into equal portions and shape into lemon-sized balls
  • Store in airtight jars.

4.    Puffed Rice Balls (Kurmure ladoo)

You will need: Jaggery, puffed rice, clarified butter (ghee)

Method

  • Heat a non-stick pan; add clarified butter and jaggery, and cook till the syrup attains a soft-ball consistency.
  • Add the puffed rice and mix.
  • Divide into equal portions and shape into balls.

5.    Bottle Gourd Slabs

You will need- milk, grated bottle gourd, mixed chopped nuts, dates syrup, cardamom powder.

Method

  • Grease an aluminum tray with sufficient ghee. Boil milk in a deep non-stick pan. Add grated bottle gourd and mix, cook till its volume becomes half and mixture becomes thick.
  • Add half the chopped nuts and dates syrup. Mix well and cook for five to ten minutes.
  • Remove from heat, pour into the greased tray and spread evenly. Sprinkle cardamom powder and remaining chopped nuts and set aside for an hour.
  • Cut into desired shapes and serve.

 6.     Sesame Slabs (Til chikki)

You will need: roasted sesame seeds, clarified butter (ghee) and jaggery.

Method

  • Heat clarified butter in the deep non-stick pan, add jaggery, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 3 minutes while stirring continuously.
  • Switch off the flame, add the roasted sesame seeds and mix very well.
  • When the mixture is ready, put the entire mixture over the back of a greased plate or a smooth stone surface.
  • Roll it out thinly into a circle using a greased rolling pin.
  • Cut them into square pieces using a sharp knife.
  • Allow it to cool completely.
  • Once cooled, store in an air-tight container.

7.    Mixed Sprouts with Beaten Rice

You will need: beaten rice (chiwra), mustard seeds, chopped onion, slit green chilies, mixed sprouts lightly steamed, turmeric powder, salt, lemon juice, chopped coriander for garnishing.

Method:

  • Place beat rice (chiwra) in a sieve and wash lightly. Drain and leave aside for 10 minutes.
  • Heat the oil in a non-stick pan and add the mustard seeds. Add onions and green chilies and sauté on a medium flame for a few minutes or till the onion turn light brown in color.
  • Add steamed mixed sprouts and sauté on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Add the turmeric powder and salt. Mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute.
  • Add water, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Add soaked and drained beaten rice (chiwra), lemon juice and mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes, while stirring continuously.
  • Serve hot garnished with coriander.

8.   Mustard and Spinach Leaves Curry (Sarson ka saag)

You will need Mustard leaves, spinach, fenugreek leaves, finely chopped onions, finely chopped tomatoes, chopped ginger, ginger garlic paste, mustard seeds, salt.

Method:

  • Wash the mustard leaves, spinach, fenugreek leaves and chop them finely.
  • Add chopped ginger and pressure cook it for 45 minutes.
  • Remove and grind the greens till it is well mixed. Add salt. Cook again over low heat.
  • -Serve hot with a tempering of mustard seeds and ginger garlic paste.

9.   Corn Bread (Makke ki roti)

You will need: maize flour, salt, carom seeds, chopped green chilles, grated ginger

Method:

  • Mix all ingredients together and make a soft dough with water.
  • Make flat and round breads or chapattis, grill them on a hot flat pan/tava till they turn golden brown and evenly cooked from all sides.
  •  Serve hot with white butter, Sarson ka saag and jaggery!

 10.   Spicy Mixed Brown Rice and Lentils (Khara Pongal)

You will need: lentils, brown rice, cumin seeds, peppercorns, asafoetida, grated coconut, slit green chili, turmeric, salt, roasted slit cashews

Method:

  • Cook cumin seed, mustard seed, peppercorns, and asafoetida in hot oil for 2 minutes. Stir the lentils into the mixture and cook another 2 minutes. Add rice, grated coconut, green chili, turmeric, salt, and water and stir.
  • Close the lid of the pressure cooker and slow cook about 35 minutes. Relieve the pressure from the cooker; stir the cashews into the mixture.
  • Garnish with shredded coconut and serve.

Important Exercises & Yoga Poses To Be Done During Pregnancy

yoga during pregnancyIn one of my articles, we explored how beneficial it is to follow yoga during pregnancy. In this article, I will highlight the prenatal yoga poses that can help you stay fit during pregnancy and support a smooth post-delivery recovery. Let’s dive right in!

Exercises & Yoga Poses To Do During Pregnancy

Start With Breathing Exercises
Before beginning, practice some mindful breathing:

  1. Sit comfortably, with your knees bent and your shoulders, head, and neck relaxed.
  2. Place one hand on your upper chest and the other just below your rib cage. This will allow you to feel your diaphragm move as you breathe.
  3. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Continue for 3-5 minutes.

1. Cat and Camel Pose

  1. Begin on your hands and knees, with your knees under your hips and your hands under your shoulders.
  2. Round your back towards the ceiling, tucking in your buttocks and slightly lowering your head.
  3. Return to a neutral position.
  4. Let your belly lower towards the floor, creating an arch in your back. Keep your head slightly raised, with your eyes looking forward.
  5. Alternate between these poses.

Tip: Use a folded towel under your knees if they hurt, or place fists instead of palms on the floor for wrist support.

2. Butterfly Pose

  • Sit with your spine and neck straight.
  • Bend both knees and bring the soles of your feet together, as close to the groin as possible.
  • Hold your feet firmly with your hands and keep your heels on the ground.
  • Place your elbows on your thighs.
  • Inhale deeply and press your thighs downward using your elbows.
  • Exhale as you raise your knees without support and release the pose.

3. Kegel’s Exercises

This exercise strengthens the pelvic floor muscles.

How to Perform:

  • Sit, stand, or lie down comfortably.
  • Contract your pelvic floor muscles as if stopping the flow of urine for 5 seconds.
  • Relax the muscles for 3 seconds.
  • Perform 5-10 repetitions per session, twice a day. Ensure you breathe normally throughout.

4. Goddess Pose

  • Step your right foot back to a stride length and turn your toes out at a 45-degree angle.
  • Bend your knees deeply and lower your hips until they align with your knees.
  • Extend your arms to shoulder height and bend your elbows so that your fingertips point upwards.
  • Engage your core, draw your tailbone towards the floor, and keep your spine long.
  • Hold the pose for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

5. Warrior Pose

  • Stand with your feet roughly three feet apart.
  • Place your right foot in front of your left foot.
  • Extend your arms out to the sides, keeping them straight and palms facing down.
  • Turn your left foot out to the side and your right foot inward.
  • Lunge forward, bending your left knee, and keep your right leg straight.
  • Hold the pose, then return to the starting position and switch legs.

6. Walking

Walking is an excellent cardiovascular exercise for expecting mothers.

Tips:

  • Start with slow walks if you’re new to physical activity.
  • Walk for 30 minutes, three times a week.
  • Pair walking with other light exercises for better results.
