How to Disinfect Your Home To Stay Safe During The Pandemic

disinfect your homeWith the coronavirus pandemic showing no signs of abating, it’s up to us to do everything we can to slow its spread. This means protecting ourselves, our families, and those around us, especially the most vulnerable. While social distancing is the most important thing that you can do in this regard it is also important to pay more heed to hygiene. Sanitization and disinfection of your home and surroundings is something that you can actively do to lower the risk of contagion. Although contact with contaminated surfaces is not the primary mode of transmission of COVID-19, it can increase your risk. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), contact with contaminated surfaces is a likely secondary mode of infection. Before you attempt to clean and disinfect your home in panic, take a breath and calm down. To effectively disinfect your home and lower the risk of coronavirus infection, find out which products work, how you should use them, and which areas of your house require your attention.

Disinfectants and Cleansers to Sanitize Your Home

Not every cleanser is effective at killing microorganisms like the coronavirus and some are only effective for bacteria or weaker viral strains. Here are the different categories of cleansers.

  • Bleach: If you’re looking to thoroughly disinfect and kill any pathogen in your house, nothing’s more effective than sodium hypochlorite – the active ingredient in bleach. Bleach is so effective as it destroys the protein and RNA, which is the defining feature of any virus. When cleaning with bleach, make sure to follow package directions and leave it on the surface for at least 10-15 minutes before mopping or wiping down.
  • Surgical Spirit or Ethanol: is one of the most powerful disinfectants you can find. It is therefore a common ingredient in many of the best disinfectants and sanitizers. From research, we know that ethanol can kill most types of coronavirus in about half a minute of exposure. It works in the same manner as bleach, destroying the virus’ RNA. When using surgical spirit or any ethanol-based cleanser, you simply need to moisten a cloth with the solution and rub it over the surface area. The point is to apply the solution over the area, not to rub it or wipe it off, as such liquids evaporate rapidly.
  • Surface Wipes: Depending on the type and quality of surface wipes, efficacy of such products can vary. Many contain antiseptics like benzalkonium chloride, which can kill germs, while some may also have natural antiseptics. The main benefit of such products is that they can help physically remove pathogens from surfaces, but they are unlikely to kill the virus itself.
  • Hand Sanitizers: are extremely useful for disinfection, especially for personal hygiene when you are forced to step outdoors and come in contact with surfaces. Hand sanitizers can also be used to clean household surfaces if needed. They are so effective because of the same primary ingredient in surgical spirit – ethanol. If you are looking for natural or herbal sanitizers, these should also contain alcohol to have any efficacy. An Ayurvedic herbal sanitizer would probably list the alcohol as prasanna or madya.
  • Soap and Water: As stated by health care authorities across the world, soap and water is your first defense against the virus. This is true with hand washing, but there’s a caveat. Almost all soaps and detergents will simply help to remove the virus and allow it be flushed away with water. However, these products will not kill the virus. This means that soaps and detergents, although helpful for hand washing, are not of much use when disinfecting household surfaces.

CAUTION

When using chemical-based disinfectants and cleansers like bleach, you need to exercise great caution. Bleach and other chemicals can be toxic if ingested or inhaled and can also cause severe skin and eye irritation. Make sure to use gloves and ensure good ventilation when using these products. If you’re using herbal Ayurvedic cleansers with ingredients like neem and aloe, this isn’t a concern at all.

When using bleach, make sure to dilute it precisely as directed and avoid mixing it with any other products as this can be deadly. Also keep in mind that bleach isn’t suitable for cleansing all surfaces as it can damage or discolor some surfaces.

Areas of Focus When You Disinfect Your Home

1. Household Surfaces
Because of the relative novelty of the COVID-19 virus, there is a lack of extensive research, but we are learning more each day. Studies show that the coronavirus has different survival times on different surfaces. Plastic and stainless steel surfaces deserve the most attention when you disinfect your home, as the virus could survive on such surfaces for up to nine days. On the other hand, paper and cardboard surfaces were found to be most inhospitable to the virus, with survival times of no more than a day.

Keeping this in mind and the efficacy of the various disinfectants that we have already discussed, you should focus on cleansing the following areas in your house.

  •       Kitchen and cabinet counters
  •       Door knobs, door handles, door bells, and all switches
  •       Remote controls, keyboards, joysticks, and other frequently used devices
  •       Laptops, tablets, and phones
  •       The outside of your wallet or bottom and handle of your purse
  •       Mattresses, cushions, and other upholstery that cannot be washed frequently may be cleansed with disinfectant sprays

2. Things You Bring into Your Home
Despite the lockdown and social distancing measures, trips to the ATM, grocery store, or pharmacist can be unavoidable. When you return with groceries and other supplies, you need to be aware of the risk of surface contamination. Every item that you purchase and bring into your home, from the packaging to the individual items, is handled by a chain of people – the employee who stocks the shelves, the cashier, and other customers who may have handled the product before.

This makes the cleansing and sanitizing of all things you bring into the house more important than other household cleansing. Wipe the surfaces of all bottles, cans, plastic bags or boxes, and other containers with disinfectants like sanitizer before you put them in your cabinet or fridge. For the same reason, it would also be a good idea to put your clothes to wash with detergent each time you enter your home. Similarly, it would be a good idea to cleanse your car’s steering wheel, dashboard, and door handles each time you return home.

Shreyans Ravrani Shifts From Illness to Wellness!

At the age of 38, Shreyans Ravrani led a lifestyle which wasn’t very different from the working professionals of his age group. As a Gujarati, his diet involved regular consumption of oily food and sweets, something he never realized can be detrimental to his health. He didn’t maintain portion control nor eat a balanced meal. Physical activity was almost nil and to add to it, his stress and sleep were negatively impacted due to work pressure and traveling.

He had joined GOQii in 2017 as he found the personal coaching feature appealing but did not stick to his plans or take being healthy seriously. In June 2019, Shreyans Ravrani was diagnosed with high cholesterol and fatty liver disease. He was faced with 2 options – either live with the prospect of lifelong medication or adopt a healthier lifestyle. He chose the latter and his life changed since then.

Making Positive Changes

Shreyans Ravrani realized he had to reduce his weight. He weighed 77kg with a BMI of 29. In order to get healthy, he renewed his subscription with GOQii in July 2019 and got more serious about utilizing personal coaching. He already was consulting a dietitian and he started to validate all her suggestions and inputs with his GOQii coach.

These were the changes he incorporated:

  • Took sugar and fried food off his diet
  • His breakfast included oats or idli.
  • For lunch, he reduced his chapatti intake to 3 and included lots of salad and buttermilk
  • For dinner, he mostly had soup or a light khichdi.
  • He stopped snacking on processed foods and shifted to fruits, roasted chana or makhana along with green tea.
  • He began walking for 2km every day but that wasn’t enough to burn fat. So he began running in August. Initially he felt breathless after 350m. By November, he could run 5km a day. From a strenuous activity, his running time now became his “Me-Time”.

As a Jain, he was used to fasting which helped him control his hunger pangs even as he reduced his meal portion. He says, fasting gives you mental strength and distracts you from the thought of food, which he was able to do successfully.

Levelling Up The Game!

By November 2019, Shreyans Ravrani participated in and completed his first 10k run within 65 minutes. In December 2019, he did it again but completed it in 60 minutes. He was happy that he managed to beat his previous time so quickly.

Between July – November 2019, he had reduced 14kg. Seeing this, his coach had to ask him to cut down on his running and add some strength training routine to his workout. He ensures that he completes his quota of running by spot jogging at home even during lockdown!

He regularly participates in health challenges organized by GOQii with the GOQii App from time to time including the current 30 Day Quarantine Burn Challenge.

Superfood Battle: Spirulina vs Moringa

Though moringa and spirulina are complete plant proteins as they contain all nine essential amino acids. Moringa has been showing up strong with other Super greens, like matcha, spinach, and kale. This time I would like to compare it with everyone’s favorite blue-green algae, spirulina. But before we get into the Spirulina vs Moringa debate, let’s understand what these two are. 

Spirulina is blue-green algae that grows on both fresh and saltwater. These tiny algae are packed with nutrients. In modern times, spirulina can provide many benefits. It is a rich source of protein and also a good source of beta-carotene, various minerals, and gamma-linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid. Spirulina is available in the form of capsules, tablets, and powder and can be incorporated in certain foods and beverages such as energy bars, popcorn, and smoothies.

Moringa Oleifera (drumstick tree) has been praised for its many health benefits for thousands of years. It is very rich in antioxidants and bioactive plant compounds which are good for health. So far, scientists have only investigated a few of the many reputed health benefits. It is known by many different names, such as drumstick tree, horseradish tree or ben oil tree.

Spirulina is a mighty protein beast, as it is high in protein as it actually holds the number one position on two points: highest protein content per calorie, and highest protein content per ounce. As 100 g of spirulina contains 58 g of protein. But you know we are not here just tell you how great spirulina is. For this battle, moringa will be depending on a few standbys: its high iron content, as well as its respectable amounts of vitamin A, calcium, and fiber. 

So, without wasting time let the Battle of the Greens begin!

Antioxidants Properties

Both Spirulina and Moringa are excellent sources of antioxidants. Each of them contains several different antioxidants, but spirulina falls just a little short when compared to moringa.

Moringa contains almost 40 known antioxidant compounds, whereas spirulina contains almost half of that. As moringa contains a great number of antioxidants in terms of the overall content, this round also goes to moringa.

Side-Effects

Moringa is considered to have no side effect, but the roots can be very poisonous. This is why one must keep in mind that only moringa fruit, leaves or seeds are meant for human consumption. Spirulina on the other hand has some potential side effects, although they are seemingly rare. The various side effects include stomach ache, constipation, dizziness – pretty much the usual suspects. According to the National Institute of Health, “People with autoimmune diseases – such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), multiple sclerosis (MS),  and pemphigus vulgaris – might have to avoid spirulina because these blue-green algae may have immune-boosting properties, which in turn might worsen the symptoms of auto-immune diseases”. The NIH also points out that spirulina contains amino acid phenylalanine, which may worsen phenylketonuria, so people with this metabolic disorder should also avoid spirulina. 

We’ll call this round a wash given both super greens carry some risks, however minimal they may actually be.

Final Verdict: Who Wins?

Moringa knocks out spirulina 7-3 with several definitive points and wins. As it turns out, spirulina is kind of a one-trick pony as it just has high protein content, it really wasn’t very competitive in any of the other categories. Both moringa oleifera & spirulina, in the case of antioxidants, each contain several different antioxidants, but spirulina falls just a little short when compared to moringa. In case of side effects, both super greens carry some risks, but here as well, moringa hits the goal in case of autoimmune diseases. So if we take an overall review, I feel moringa wins!

Top Foods To Lower Cholesterol Levels

High cholesterol is one of the common causes that leads to heart diseases. Luckily, there are a few good natural food sources to help you lower cholesterol levels. When you start working on your eating habits along with other lifestyle modifications like no smoking, reducing alcohol, being physically active and exercising daily, you will not only see the improvement in your cholesterol levels but also your overall health.

Which Foods Can Lower Cholesterol Levels? 

Eating more fruits, vegetables and wholegrains, including healthy fats and protein in our meals, may help lower cholesterol levels in your blood. Some of these foods include:

  1. Whole Grains: Including high-fiber, whole grain food in your diet can help lower cholesterol levels. Oats and barley contain a soluble fiber called beta-glucan which helps in lowering LDL levels. Starting your day with a bowl of oatmeal is the best choice. Quinoa is a great choice too with its antioxidant, Vitamin B and fiber content which helps in reducing cholesterol levels.
  2. Nuts: Fiber, protein and antioxidant rich nuts which are also high in monounsaturated fat like almond, pecan, walnuts and pistachios help in lowering cholesterol levels. Just make sure you limit the intake to a handful of nuts a day to limit the calorie intake.
  3. Fruits: are high in fiber, potassium and pectin – a type of soluble fiber which helps in lowering LDL. Some fruits good for lowering cholesterol level are apples, avocados, grapes, strawberries, oranges and other citrus fruits rich in Vitamin C. 
  4. Fatty Fish: Salmon, tuna and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acid – which helps in lowering triglyceride levels. They help in reducing inflammation and increase the level of good cholesterol. So, eating fish 2-3 times a week is good for heart health.
  5. Vegetables: Being high in vitamins, minerals, fiber and low in calories, vegetables help in lowering cholesterol levels. Vegetables like carrot, okra and eggplant are good sources of soluble fiber, which can help you lower cholesterol levels.
  6. Beans: are high in soluble fiber and they take time to digest, keeping you full for longer. You can include any beans from kidney beans to chickpeas to black eyed peas and any other.
  7. Healthy Fats: Replace saturated fats with monounsaturated fats like olive oil, canola oil and polyunsaturated fats like flax seeds, soy, sunflower seed oil. These are said to help you lower your LDL level and boost your HDL level.

So, include at least 3-5 portions of fruits and vegetables each day along with a handful of nuts. 

Prepare your food by grilling, poaching, roasting, boiling, baking instead of deep frying to reduce fat intake.
