5 Ways To Keep Your Lungs Healthy

keep your lungs healthy

Even though the heart gets a lot of attention, healthy lungs are also crucial for overall health — particularly in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Lung infections often develop as a complication of other chronic illnesses. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), exposure to air pollution results in 4.2 million deaths worldwide each year. Cigarette smoking is the cause of death for one in every five people in the United States. So, lungs should not be taken for granted. Though the body has a natural defense system to protect the lungs, there are some ways to keep your lungs healthy!

How To Keep Your Lungs Healthy

1. Practice Deep Breathing
Although lung capacity can diminish as you age, certain deep breathing exercises can help you breathe better. Breathing exercises can help healthy people as well as those with breathing problems. You can try these two types of deep breathing techniques to keep your lungs healthy.

  • Diaphragmatic breathing helps in building lung capacity and helps people with COPD. Inhale through your nose for two seconds, feeling the air move into the abdomen and breathe out for two seconds.
  • Pursed-lip breathing: Breathe in through your nose and then breathe out slowly through pursed lips.

2. Detox Your Lungs
Our lungs are mostly self-cleaning organs but there are certain simple ways which help cleaning lungs, so that they function at an optimum level.

  • To break down the mucus, start your day with 1-2 crushed cloves of garlic in one tsp of raw honey.
  • Drink 250ml of lemon water, add a pinch of cayenne pepper and drink it in the morning to loosen up the mucus.
  • Drink fenugreek seed water and chew the soaked fenugreek seeds to break down the mucus.
  • Steam inhalation with peppermint and eucalyptus oil for 5 minutes twice a day is an effective way to keep your lungs healthy.
  • Castor oil has properties to destroy mucus, massaging your chest deeply with warm castor oil is good to cure congestion.

3. Get Fit & Stay Active
Exercise forces the muscles to work harder, which increases the body’s breathing rate, which in turn gives a good supply of oxygen to the muscles. It also helps in improving circulation and making the body more efficient in removing the excess carbon dioxide that the body produces when exercising.

4. Stay Hydrated
The best way to keep your airways moist is to stay well hydrated. Staying well-hydrated is very important if you have breathing problems because it helps the lungs to do their job better. It keeps the mucosal lining in the lungs thin and this thinner lining helps the lungs function better.

5. Prevent Infection & Avoid Exposure To Pollutants
Sometimes respiratory infections become very serious. To safeguard your lungs from various infections you should:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitizer
  • Maintain good oral hygiene, brush your teeth twice a day and see your dentist every six months
  • Avoid crowded places during cold and flu season. Get yourself vaccinated against influenza and pneumonia every year
  • Minimize exposure to outdoor air if the quality is not good and avoid exercising outdoors on bad air days
  • Don’t exercise near heavy traffic to avoid inhaling polluted air
  • Avoid exposure to indoor pollutants which worsen lung disease. Make your home and car smoke-free
  • Dust the furniture at least twice a week. Keep your home clean as much you can, use natural cleaning products and make sure you have adequate air ventilation at home.
  • Instead of using synthetic air fresheners and candles, you can use an aromatherapy diffuser, essential oils like lavender oil, peppermint oil, rosemary oil, etc.
  • Stop smoking as soon as possible because it causes chronic inflammation in the lungs and destroys lung tissues which can lead to chronic bronchitis and lung cancer.

Apart from the above therapies, you can add some anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich foods to your diet which helps in reducing the inflammation of the lungs. Try adding turmeric, green tea, cherries, blueberries, olives, walnuts, beans and lentils, etc. to keep your lungs healthy!

8 Interesting Facts About Yoga You May Not Know

Interesting facts about yoga

By this time around, we are all well-versed about yoga and what it can do to your mind, body and soul. We all know that it began in India, it consists of physical asanas and breathing techniques. At some point in time, we have even attempted yoga.

Then, there are some facts that not many people know about. So the next time you’re at a social gathering with your yogi friends, you can just share these interesting facts with them as your learning of the day!

1. Yoga is Found in One of the Oldest Texts in the World

The word ‘yoga’ was first mentioned in the Rig Veda, written approximately around 1500 B.C or before! This only goes to show that yoga has been in our culture since time memorial, especially if it was mentioned in one of the oldest texts in the world!

2. Yoga Can Cause Injuries

Yes, it can heal your mind, body and soul. It can also alleviate a lot of health issues but it can hurt you as well. Yoga is like a double-edged sword, if not practiced correctly, you could injure yourself. But don’t get too tangled! If you find a good enough teacher (like Ronak Gajjar and Sheetal Tewari on GOQii Play :D) and exercise caution, you should be fine!

3. It Reduces the Risk of Heart Disease

Other than reducing stress, it also helps lower blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and blood glucose levels, thus, in turn, promoting good heart health. A handy lifestyle intervention, we’d say!

4. There is no Shortage of Variety

As a generation that is spoiled for choice, you’ll be glad to know that there is no shortage of asanas when it comes to yoga! With over 84 asanas, you’ll have plenty of variety to choose from.

5. It Can Spice Up Your Sex Life

This primarily works on two levels: mental and physical. Yoga helps you counteract stress, fatigue and poor self-image, all of which can suppress your libido. It can also help you increase your flexibility, muscle control and strength, all of which help you physically. Your sex life will be blooming after a few asanas!

6. Yogis Believe We Have Limited Number of Breaths

This explains the reason why breathing is so controlled in yoga. Yogis often practiced it as a means to increase their lifespan. As they believed that each human has a limited amount of breaths allotted to them, controlling their breath would help them prolong their life.

7. Lord Shiva is Considered the First Yogi

Lord Shiva is considered the progenitor of yoga, the first yogi or the Adiyogi. He was the first one who sowed the seeds of yoga into the human mind. Lord Shiva had imparted the wisdom of yoga to seven individuals who came to be known as Saptarishis and were tasked with spreading it throughout the world.

8. Yoga Can Increase Your Lifespan

When people say “Yoga is Life”, they aren’t lying. It improves your heart health, helps you lose weight, makes your bones stronger, aids digestion and improves mental and emotional health, to name a few. With so much work going into your body, you are bound to live a long and fruitful life!

Now that you’re all geared up on knowledge, it is time to share it with the world!

“GOQii And I Are Inseparable For Life!” – Madela Bharathi

user journeyThere’s a myth that you can’t be fit and healthy if you’re a homemaker. Some say that it is difficult to look after your own health as you’re so focused on those you want to take care of. But if you have the determination, dedication and drive, nothing can stop you! Well, once you’re already fit, it is all about levelling up, just like our GOQii Player Madela Bharathi.

Madela Bharathi is a homemaker who lives in Vizag. She is 43, married and has two children, 17 and 19 years of age. She had always been fitness conscious and she ate healthy as well. Even as a homemaker, her goal was to get fitter, push her limits and go beyond them!

Already Fit? Level Up!

In August 2018, she got introduced to GOQii through her husband who is an employee at HPCL. They both wanted to participate in the GOQii Corporate Steps Challenge at HPCL. As a part of the onboarding process, she set her long term goals – to stay fit, live disease-free and improve sleep.

When she joined GOQii, her sole motive was to win the Corporate Steps Challenge at HPCL. She used to clock in 50k steps everyday. Walking had become an obsession for her as she wanted to be among the top 10 participants. Her routine only revolved around household chores and walking.

Although her family wasn’t pleased with her walking all day for the challenge, it didn’t deter her motivation to be on top! She saw this as a challenge she wanted to complete, a challenge she wanted to ace without looking back!

As a result, between August 2018 to December 2018, she reduced her weight from 52kg to 49.5kg. Seeing that there was no stopping her, her GOQii Coach asked her to increase her protein intake. She was advised to eat 6 eggs and Sattu along with normal home cooked meals.

During this time, her D3 and B12 levels had dropped and she was asked to take supplements for the same for 6 months.

Crushing Goals and Being on Top!

In November 2018, Madela Bharathi stood 7th place among the HPCL employees who had participated in the challenge. By December 2018, she was the only woman in the top 10. She stood 1st in Vizag and 2nd in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

She had even participated in the India Steps Challenge but was asked to stop walking completely by her GOQii Coach. That did not stop her from claiming 2 GOQii Vitals for herself!

Current Regime and Habits

As of now, fitness continues to be an addiction for Madela Bharathi. She works out watching GOQii Play Coach Aliya Imran’s classes within the GOQii app in the morning and evening. She used to be regular on all classes, tuning in and working out but has limited herself to ensure that she doesn’t overtrain and hurt herself.

Madela can hold an elbow plank for 5 minutes and 40 seconds, although she has challenged herself to extend it to 8 minutes. She practices deep breathing techniques suggested by GOQii Play Coach and Yoga Specialist Ronak Gajjar. Thanks to this, her sleep quality has improved immensely.

Her current habits include eating Halim Seeds soaked in water overnight, as soon as she wakes up. She eats a fruit before a workout and a dry fruits milkshake after. She also consumes Whey Protein Isolate and Sattu every alternate day.

What Are Her Thoughts on GOQii?

Madela Bharathi thoroughly enjoys Coach Aliya’s classes. She says that Coach Aliya has been the guiding force behind her motivation to stay fit, accept challenges and constantly keep pushing her limits.

She is happy with her GOQii Coach’s suggestions on nutrition. Consulting with her GOQii Coach helped her regularize her workout regime, got her aware about the nuances of different exercises, form, posture and nutritional support, etc.

“GOQii and I are inseparable for life now,” she says. Even though her husband discontinued with GOQii after the HPCL challenge, she has chosen to stick with GOQii, further adding that, “GOQii has become a means for me to do what I love best. I get all the guidance and information from coaches and cannot ask for anything more!”

Her future plan is to run a marathon and wishes to train for the same.

What Did Her GOQii Coach Have to Say?

Madela Bharathi is a perfect example of the quote, “Don’t Limit your Challenges, Challenge your Limits!” An enthusiastic woman who joined GOQii to challenge her active lifestyle and work on gaining some muscle mass to take her fitness to the next level.

Madela is a very disciplined woman who is always motivated to try a new habit every time. Be it healthy eating, or level up for workouts, she has always done an excellent job and done justice to the habit, which has definitely helped her in reaching her milestones.

She has always been regular with updating logs and activities on app with all her honesty. She always took my suggestions seriously and made sure that every call done ends up being fruitful. Madela, you truly are an inspiration to today’s women. No matter what the age, it is all about dedication.
