There is no specific diet plan or pattern for Diabetes. It’s the small changes that you make with foods which help you manage your blood sugar better.

The Right Eating Habits To Beat High Blood Sugar Levels

  • Have small but frequent meals: Having small meals will control the sugar spikes. Long gaps between meals can increase as well as drop blood sugar levels. Long gaps also leach out energy and makes you feel tired. Having 4-5 small meals with balanced carbohydrates helps managing blood sugar well.
  • Choose the right carbs: All the grains have carb, be it potato or oats, it’s the quality which matters. Opting for carbs allowing slow release of sugar are best to choose. Carbs with high fiber content like whole wheat flour, Jowar, Ragi, and Oats can help control blood sugar as it will release the sugar slowly and help you control those spikes.
  • Avoid processed foods: We all know refined foods and packaged foods are not that great for our health. With diabetes, it affects blood sugar directly. Refined foods get absorbed very easily as they lack fiber – which can easily increase sugar. Always add lots of vegetables if packaged food is the only option. Rely on portion control for best results!
  • Add more proteins: Protein-rich foods are not readily available to raise blood sugar. You will see the positive impact on blood sugar once you add protein foods with every meal. Having more sprouts salad, paneer bites, or curd raita fills you up as well as stabilizes sugar.
  • Include Fiber: Fiber plays an important role in the digestion of food. Fiber not only delays sugar absorption but also binds cholesterol and reduces the risk of obesity as well as heart ailments. Don’t think twice before adding some raw salads or veggie soups to major meals.
  • Cut down fat: There is nothing wrong if the fat is coming from right sources. All vegetable fats from avocado, seeds, nuts like peanuts, almonds, home-made ghee, etc. are good to go. Just make sure it is in moderation. Good fat helps you manage weight, which has a direct relation with sugar control and in a way, also helps release sugar slowly as fat takes time to digest.
  • Exercise: Even if you control your food habits well, if your muscles aren’t moving, you might not get to see the results you want. Just a 40-minute brisk walk can help increase blood circulation, manage weight and fat metabolism. Every 5% reduction in weight can provide a positive result with diabetes, heart health and overall wellbeing.
  • Cut out the refined sugar: Aim to have as little sugar as possible. Direct form of sugar results in major spikes. Refined sugar, candies, cakes, and pastries, etc. stay for 3 months as the blood RBC is made every 3 months. High HbA1c is associated with long term complication. It is best to try and keep your HbA1c in control by having a good portion control with right choice of food. Cut out on these sweets and go for healthier alternatives like jaggery.

12 Low Glycemic Index Fruits For Diabetics

glycemic indexDiabetes is a condition that impairs the body’s ability to process blood glucose, also called blood sugar. Blood glucose, which is sugar concentration, is our main source of energy and comes from the food we eat. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food get into our cells to be used for energy. Absence or insufficient production of insulin, or an inability of the body to properly use insulin causes diabetes. The glycemic index (GI) tells us how quickly foods containing carbohydrates affect our blood sugar level when eaten

  • Low GI foods: 55 or below
  • Moderate GI foods: 56 to 69
  • High GI foods: 70 and above

Fruits With Low Glycemic Index 

The lower the GI score, the more slowly the rise in blood sugar, which can help the body manage post-meal changes better. Most whole fruits have low to moderate GI levels. Many fruits are also packed with antioxidants, micronutrients and fiber as well. Here are a few low GI fruits which diabetics can have without worrying about the sudden rise in blood sugar levels post consumption:

  1. Cherries: are high in potassium and packed with antioxidants, which will give your immune system a boost. Because cherries are not available fresh all round the year, they can be processed before storing them for a long time. Cherries contain anthocyanins that give the cherries its colour, also boost cells insulin production by 50%.
  2. Pears: are a good source of fiber and provide 20% of our daily recommended fiber intake. Pears can be enjoyed as fresh fruit or gently baked. More interesting is they can also be included in salads for a good twist.
  3. Oranges: are good sources of vitamin C, folate and potassium. There is also plenty of healthy fiber in an orange which takes longest to break down and digest. This enables slow release of sugar into the bloodstream, which would further ensure that your blood glucose levels are stable for a long period of time
  4. Berries: Strawberries are a good source of vitamin C, they help in improving immunity, fight against certain types of cancer and improve metabolism, promoting weight loss. Strawberries give you more vitamin C than an orange when taken in the same quantity. They also have a low glycemic index, hence, it is slowly released in the bloodstream as glucose.
  5. Grapefruits: are citrus-based fruits with a glycemic index of 25. They are packed with a range of vitamins and minerals. They have a bitter to sour taste and can be taken as whole fruit or made into juice. Grape fruit is a very good source of vitamin A and C. It helps improve immunity and helps maintain healthy functioning of the heart and is good for digestion. 
  6. Guava: is a very healthy food choice for diabetics, as it can easily be included in snacks without the fear of sudden raise in blood sugar levels. It is a very good source of fiber which helps relieve constipation, which is a common complaint of many diabetics. Having this fruit regularly can easily lower the chance of developing Type II Diabetes.
  7. Watermelon: is a good source of Potassium. Foods high in potassium improves functioning of vital organs like the heart and kidney. People with diabetes easily observe that their uric acid levels are higher. This can be prevented by including watermelon in their diet which improves kidney functioning and reduces uric acid levels and further damage of the kidneys. Water melons are also a good source of lycopene which prevents nerve damage which is a common complaint of people with diabetes.
  8. Papaya: is a great fruit choice for diabetics as it is available round the year and can be incorporated in the diet very easily. Papayas have a host of nutrients and antioxidants, which when consumed, reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, lowers BP and also aids good digestion. Papaya is also a good source of fiber and helps lower blood glucose levels and manage diabetes.
  9. Grapes: are a good choice of fruit for diabetes as it helps reduce blood sugar levels easily. They come in many colours and varieties, You can have them easily between meals as snacks and can be included in many dishes for its tangy taste. Grapes are a rich source of a phytochemical called Resveratrol which keeps a check on how the body secretes and uses insulin in response to blood glucose levels.
  10. Avocado: Adding a serving of avocado to your diet may help you lose weight, lower cholesterol, and increase insulin sensitivity. Avocados are low in carbohydrates, which mean they have little effect on blood sugar levels. One half of a small avocado contains about 5.9 grams of carbohydrate and 4.6 grams of fiber. They are also packed with healthy fats which give you a feeling of fullness for a longer time, thereby supporting weight loss and increasing insulin sensitivity. 
  11. Kiwi: Many researchers have proved that including kiwi in your diet helps lower blood sugar levels. Kiwis are loaded with vitamin A, C, E and fiber which makes it a good choice of fruits for diabetics. Kiwi also helps relieve insomnia which many people with diabetes complain due to long term diabetes and anxiety. 
  12. Black Jamun: This fruit has a bitter taste and is one of the best fruits for people suffering from diabetes. It not only controls your blood sugar level but also enhances the insulin activity and sensitivity. This fruit can be included in the form of juice or powder as well, which is equally beneficial in managing blood sugar levels.

No matter which fruit one includes, portion control is important. While it can vary depending on the size and type of the fruit, in general, one portion of fruit which is one piece of whole fruit or 1/2 cup of sliced fruit contains around 15 grams of carbohydrates, which is considered as one carbohydrate serving.

As each person’s body needs and compositions differ, weight loss works differently for different people. What remains common is the fact that weight loss needs to be holistic and diet alone isn’t the best method. The ideal method is a combination of various lifestyle factors.

The key to weight loss is making permanent changes in your eating habits as well as lifestyle. It is said that weight gain is not quick and is not the result of days or even a few months. It’s a result of years of overeating. The safest and the most effective way of slimming is to lose weight sensibly. For instance, a kilo in a week is quick, safe and manageable.

Crash diets should be avoided because more often than not, they fail. A severe diet can slow the body’s metabolism down. The key to successful weight loss is making permanent changes in your eating habits. Do not try to revamp your diet all at once. Start with a few adjustments and gradually build on them until balanced nutrition choices become a regular part of your routine. Gradual changes in diet are more likely to become habits eventually.

Some Myths, Tips & Funny Tricks For Weight Loss

Myths

  • A glass of warm water in the morning helps you lose weight: Many believe that consuming warm water on an empty stomach is a cure for excess weight. They believe that hot water dissolves fat but the truth is that fat does not dissolve in water
  • Switching sugar with honey will aid weight loss: I agree that honey has many therapeutic and curative powers but curing obesity is not one of them
  • Bananas are fattening: This is the most misunderstood fruit and has calories as much as any other fruit. Also they are a wonderful source of potassium. They are filling and assuage constipation
  • Standing while eating burns more calories: The truth is you tend to eat more while standing. I always recommend one to sit and eat unless circumstances demand otherwise
  • Skipping breakfast is good during dieting: It’s recommended never to skip breakfast or else you tend to overeat in your next meal. After dinner, our body is in the fasting state and next morning when we wake up, our body needs fuel to get going
  • Potatoes are fattening: It’s safer to consume potatoes over breads as breads are twice as fattening as potatoes. Go for boiled potatoes rather than fried ones
  • Saunas help in shedding kilos: You may feel rejuvenated and great sitting in a sauna but what you really lose after one session is merely the weight of water. Once the fluids have been replenished, your weight comes back to normal

Tips

  • Eat plenty of green leafy veggies, fruits, and whole grains
  • Drink plenty of water. This will keep off hunger. Sometimes, what we often think as hunger is in fact thirst. Here’s how you can differentiate between hunger and thirst
  • You need to watch the nutrients that you consume. Divide your entire day’s plate into 4 quarters. Fill more than half of your plate with veggies and fruits. Remaining could be balanced between dairy, beans or cereals
  • Try to go for small frequent meals instead of typical 3 square meals i.e. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Ideally, you should consume some food after every 2.5- 3 hours
  • Have a colourful meal. By colours I don’t mean artificial/synthetic colours. What I mean is choose foods with colourful veggies and fruits and make your plate aesthetically attractive
  • Eat your meals mindfully and chew thoroughly. This will help in portion control, better digestion and reduces the chances of overeating
  • If you have a sweet tooth, don’t hold the guilt, satisfy it. Choose a sweet, like a candy or peppermint, which will last in your mouth for some time and tastes heavenly. If it is a high calorie sweet loaded with sugar and fat, take just a bite. Remember taste is what you want, not the calories
  • If you happen to treat yourself with some sweets or fried foods, do so at breakfast. As our metabolism is more active during this time of the day. Plus, you have an entire day to burn off the extra calories
  • Sleep deprivation can cause you to snack unnecessarily. Have a good rest and sleep for weight moderation
  • Focus on deep breathing, into your stomach and not just your chest. Oxygen is one key to lose weight, as fat burns in the flame of oxygen. Take equal time to exhale so as to eliminate toxins from the body
  • Don’t miss your daily workout. If you don’t have the luxury of time, try and be active for at least 20 minutes per day as it’s always said that a little workout is better than no workout

Tricks

  • Develop a reward system. It’s proven that when you have something to look forward to at the end of each milestone, it automatically helps to mentally and emotionally shorten the cycle of long term success
  • While setting a target, try to be realistic and do not dream of a petite figure. It will boost your confidence once you achieve that realistic goal
  • This sounds silly but really works (personal experience). When you are tempted to reach out for that forbidden snack, before satisfying your taste buds, just take a deep breath & count to 100. Usually, by the time you finish counting to 100, your craving would have vanished
  • Chocolate craving is the most addictive of all. Next time you feel like eating a chocolate, just take a whiff of a strong perfume. This eases the craving
  • Pinch your ear to lose your appetite! Surprising, isn’t it? Well Reflexologists believe that pinching your ear will curb cravings and reduce your appetite
  • Above all, always be motivated! Think thin and fit. Imagine yourself at the weight you would like to be or the clothes you would like to fit in. Also picture how others will react to you at your new weight and look. Enjoy the feelings that these thoughts will evoke as they will keep you motivated for the long run!

The holy month of Ramadan is auspicious for the Islamic Community across the world. During this period, one practices restraint by fasting from sunrise till sunset, eating one meal before dawn i.e. the ‘suhoor’ or ‘sehri’ and breaking the fast with a meal after sunset i.e. Iftar.

While this sort of fasting comes with a plethora of health benefits, it is important to do it the right way! Balancing nutrition and exercising portion control is key to staying healthy while observing a fast during Ramadan.

Here are some foods that will help you do just that!

Foods You Should Eat

  • Drinks: Ideally, the best way to break a fast is by consuming plenty of fluids to replenish your body. You can opt for smoothies, fruit juices or even water which provides hydration without extra calories or sugars. You can also opt for a soup, which is considered traditional in many Arab countries.

Fasting is good but fasting the right way is equally important. Here are some things you need to watch out for while fasting during Ramadan.

  • Don’t Miss Sehri or Suhoor: Think of this as your breakfast. It is the most important meal of the day as it keeps your energy levels high throughout. This meal stores important nutrients in your body and keeps you going through the day. Skipping this meal can cause digestive discomfort, making your body sluggish. Moreso, it may compel you to overeat while breaking your fast which may lead to acidity, heartburn, bloating and weight gain.
  • If you experience dizziness, are unable to stand or feel disoriented, hydrate yourself immediately. Not doing so may lead to fainting, constipation, or splitting headaches. Dehydration can adversely affect your health.
  • Eat in Moderation: It is easy to get carried after while breaking a fast and overindulging with large portions. Avoid this and keep a constant check on your portion size. Remember to eat and not feast.
  • Limit Exercise: If you have been fasting, doing intense exercises may not be the wisest of choices. Perform extremely light workouts and don’t go overboard as your body needs to conserve energy.
