Living well with regular Yoga and good Nutrition

Yoga is not simply a set of exercises but a lifestyle. When practising yoga, asanas and nutrition go hand in hand to improve your quality of life. Your digestive system, immunity and energy levels are directly linked to the food you intake. If there is a problem with any of these, yoga asanas can help resolve it.

Digestion: Not all food is easy to digest. Instead of popping laxatives and antacids after every meal, change the food you’re eating. Citrus fruits and leafy vegetables that are rich in fibre aid digestion and prevent constipation. Some foods like yoghurt, buttermilk are probiotics that support the growth of gut bacteria and keep your stomach healthy. Also include carminatives or foods that prevent the formation of gas like cumin, ginger and oatmeal.

Yogic Asanas such as the Spinal twist, Apanasana and Paschimottanasana can help smoothen the digestive process.

Immunity: Eating the right food can help boost your immunity. Citrus fruits are rich sources of vitamin C that directly strengthen the immune system. Herbs like turmeric, ginger and garlic are rich in antioxidants and linked to the prevention of a number of diseases including several types of Cancer. Proteins also help nourish your immune system and hence should not be ignored.

A combination of asanas and yogic breathing techniques can help boost your immunity. Some asanas to try to include Viparita Karani, Bhujangasana, Matsyasana and Adho Mukha Svanasana. These poses help lower stress and boost immunity by pumping rich oxygenated blood to all the parts of the body.

Energy: The food you eat is turned into glucose to fuel the body and maintain a constant supply of energy. Soy and green leafy vegetables that are rich in iron can effectively boost your energy levels. Fruits like apples, bananas and oranges can also help increase your energy. Yoghurt rich in magnesium does not directly contribute towards the creation of glucose but helps the body release this energy whenever needed.

Yoga asanas help increase blood flow and increase the heart’s capacity to pump blood through the body. A few yoga poses that can boost energy are the camel pose, tree pose and warrior asana.

Relaxation: Sipping on a cup of green tea is a good way to end the day and relax. Other food like honey, milk, celery and oatmeal can also help calm the body and fight off the day’s stress. Apart from being delicious, dark chocolate also releases hormones that ease stress and help relax a person.

Practising yoga breathing techniques like Pranayama can effectively release tension. Supta Baddha Konasana, Viparita Karani and the Supta Matsyendrasana can also help increase energy levels.

Yogurt: The miracle food

It is middle of summer and the temperature is rising day by day. It is during this season that you need foods that keep you cool. The one such miraculous food is ‘Yogurt’. It’s miraculous only because it does miracles to our health. Yogurt is one of the Functional foods which posses’ special functions to human health. Let’s understand why it is a miracle food?

Let us understand the nutritional benefits and contents of yogurt. Yogurt is made from milk and therefore one can get a dose of animal protein (about 9 grams per 6-ounce serving), plus several other nutrients found in dairy foods, like Calcium, Vitamin B-2, Vitamin B-12, Potassium, and Magnesium are in Yoghurt.

Yogurt is also a “probiotic.” Probiotics are “friendly bacteria” that are naturally present in the digestive system. Live strains of these “good bacteria” are also found in many yogurt products.

Potential benefits of Yoghurt:-

1: Yogurt May Help in the Gut Health –

Yoghurt helps in controlling certain gastrointestinal conditions, including lactose intolerance, constipation, diarrheal diseases, colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, Helicobacter pylori infection, and allergies. Yogurt is a boon to patients with these conditions and have benefitted because of innate immunity response created by yogurt and improvement of healthy bacteria in GI tract.

2: Yogurt Boosts the Immune System (including gastrointestinal and respiratory infections) –

Yogurt makes us strong by providing immunity. Given the right circumstances, eating yogurt may help protect the intestinal tract. As a result, yogurt has great potential as a protective, anti-infection agent. Increased yogurt consumption might help increase one’s resistance to immune-related diseases such as cancer and infection, particularly gastrointestinal infection. So we have the power to increase the immunity in such conditions. Why not opt for one cup everyday during your snacks time to stay away from these conditions.

3: Yogurt may help Prevent Osteoporosis –

As I said earlier, this healthy snack is packed with calcium and several other nutrients that help postmenopausal women maintain strong and healthy bones. Those who are concerned about developing osteoporosis or are looking for a way to help manage the disease should incorporate more of this tasty and powerful food into their diets.

4: Yogurt may reduce the risk of High Blood Pressure – 

In today’s time there are lots of people who suffer from high blood pressure. We generally do control over our diet to control that condition, but do you know we don’t need to watch calories while having Yogurt…..Why?

Eating yogurt is more satisfying, so we are less likely to reach for higher-calorie sources of calcium and protein. Being lower in fat, it is less likely to stick to the insides of our blood vessels. The potassium in yogurt, almost 600 milligrams per eight ounces, may help flush some of the excess sodium out of your body.

5 best sherbet (sorbet) for this summer

What do you serve your guests when they visit you in summer? Undoubtedly Lime juice as it is one of the easiest and favourite of all. But, there are few interesting other Sherbets or also called as Sorbet to try out this summer and beat this scorching heat.

  1. BAEL SHERBET

Ingredients

Bael fruit—1

Misri—20g

Water: 200ml

Roasted Cumin (jeera) powder—pinch

Ice—4 cubes and Mint leaves -5 pcs

Method: Cut the Bael fruit into two pieces. Take a mixing bowl, scoop the pulp and mash it well. Add roasted (cummin) jeera powder, Taal misri (crystallized sugar lumps) and water and stir well. Leave it in the refrigerator for 20min. Pour it into a glass and garnish the drink with a pinch of cumin (jeera) powder and mint leaves. Serve cold.

  1. JAAM SHERBET:       

white jamun 1

Ingredients

White Jamun or Love Apple or Water Apple-4 nos

Mint leaves-4

Water: 200ml

Himalayan salt to taste

Black pepper to taste

Ice-4cubes

Method: Grate the white jamun or love apples, add water, a pinch of salt, black pepper, crushed mint leaves and stir it well. Pour it into a glass, add ice cubes and serve cold.

3 JAMUN (Black Plum) THANDA:

Ingredients

Fresh Jamun (Black Plum) pulp: 200g

Misri (small crystallised cubed sugar)—60g

Black pepper pods-15 nos

Black salt to taste

Water—400ml

Method: Blend the ingredients in a juicer. Garnish with chunks of Jamuns and add a few ice cubes. Serve cold.

4. TAMATAR TUSLI SHERBET/SORBET :

tomato and basic leaves

Fresh red tomatoes-4

Tusli (Basil Leaves)—10pieces

Green chilli-1

Jeer powder-a pinch

Sendha Namak (Himalayan Rock Salt) to taste

Water-200ml

Mint leaves—5

Method: Blend the ingredients. Strain and pour it in a glass. Add ice cubes and crushed mint leaves and serve cold.

5. GULAB BHARI LASSI:

Ingredients

Yoghurt—250g

Mint leaves-20g

Rose water-10ml

Misri-50g

Water: 50ml

Method:

Add all the ingredients to a mixing bowl and blend well until you get a creamy froth on top. Serve cold.

NOTE: You can use Jaggery instead of Misri ( Crystallised sugar) also as a sweetening agent.
