6 Health Benefits of Playing Sports

health benefits of sportsDo you remember the days when you were active and indulged in sports. Be it a game of football or cricket in your alley or shooting 3 pointers at your college’s basketball court, running all over the place with your friends created cherished memories. If this was an integral part of your childhood, you are familiar with the health benefits of playing sports!

Sports ensures that you are active both mentally and physically. As you grow older, sometimes due to responsibilities, work, family or other reasons, we tend to give up on our favorite hobby. We have seen so many cases where a person who used to play a sport, gave up and gained weight.

In most cases, once they began playing their favorite sport once again, their body accelerated much faster than the others and they lost all the stubborn fat they couldn’t get rid of otherwise. This happens primarily because your cells have the memory of being active. Remember that it is never too late to start again!

Sports as an extracurricular activity in school and college not only gave you a break from your studies but also helped you get healthier. How you ask? Let’s find out!

6 Health Benefits of Playing Sports

  1. It teaches you to be patient, have a fighting spirit, and never settle for less in life.
  2. Studies show that, children who have been into sports or are blessed with super active genes are quick learners, very social, perform better at any given task, are more attentive in class and their grasping powers are much better than the others.
  3. Sports at an early age helps in life-long fitness habits.
  4. Earlier it was believed that any type of physical exertion can make a person feel more tired and less attentive. This belief was nothing more than a myth. Active people are more intellectual and perform better as compared to sedentary people.
  5. Looking at the growing occurrence of Teenage Obesity, sports can be a great and fun way to help them get back into shape.
  6. Any sport or activity will give you a dash of endorphins, reducing any kind of stress and keeping you happy!

So don’t sit back and think you’re too old for this or too old to get back to the sport you love! Wake up your inner child, grab your equipment, play a sport and encourage those around you to as well!

How to Create a Better and Healthy India

women's healthA young woman, who seemed slightly on the heavier side, approached me on the walking track at the Coimbatore-Race Course. She asked for tips on health management and weight reduction, even suggesting that I create a group to help with these goals. This encounter inspired me to share my thoughts in this blog.

Creating awareness among women about the importance of staying physically fit is the first step towards building a healthier India. In my opinion, healthy women are the cornerstone of healthy societies. Health and fitness are two sides of the same coin, both essential for living a healthy and happy life.

While women excel in many areas, taking care of their health is often not one of them. The reality is that women are more likely than men to neglect preventive health care. My conversations with women reveal that fitness is one of their top wellness challenges. But why is that?

Following are the commonly cited reasons by women as barriers to exercise:

  1. Women are too busy taking care of others to focus on themselves. Their dedication to family creates significant time and logistical barriers to being physically active. Many women juggle household responsibilities and jobs, leaving little time for their health or self-care.
  2. They may not have access to resources such as parks and gyms, and they often lack motivation and confidence to exercise.
  3. Reasons for weight gain may be attributed to the inheritance of genetic predisposition or caesarean sections undergone by them.
  4. Lack of energy is yet another factor as fatigue is a by-product of a tiring lifestyle and women are often tired.
  5. Women with low incomes are less likely to exercise regularly.  They do not realize that not all exercises require expensive clothes or a gym membership. One of the most beneficial forms of exercise is free – brisk walking!
  6. Mindset is yet another factor, as women feel that going outside for a walk or to hit the gym is not necessary for them.
  7. Breaking the laziness barrier is the main hurdle for most people irrespective of gender.
  8. Women feel that they are constantly being looked at by others when walking in public. They are reluctant and shy to wear jogging suits and walk with their cellulite jiggling appearance, as they feel that they will be laughed at. This is true especially among South Indian women as cultural factors play a major role in this part of India. The fear of judgement is greater than the women’s self-confidence.
  9. Women who believe that child-rearing and domestic chores are ‘women’s work’ are less likely to take time to exercise – perhaps they feel guilty taking time out for themselves. Sexism proves to be one of the barriers.
  10. Some others think that to be useful, exercise must be painful, sweaty and gruelling, which of course is not true.

How Can Women Improve Their Health?

Women, as health managers or promoters within their families, have a significant role in influencing overall family health. It’s time for women to prioritize their well-being and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

  • Lose weight if you are overweight, start with just 15 minutes of walking a day.
  • Eat a balanced diet. Cook healthy meals for yourself and your family instead of relying on takeout or processed foods.
  • Eat the right food in correct proportions at the right time as women have the habit of delaying their meal timings owing to the pressure of work.
  • Create time for walking as walking is considered the king of exercises. It offers numerous benefits without risking injury or stress on the body.
  • Regular Brisk Walking can help you maintain a healthy weight. It prevents and/or manages various medical conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.
  • Find a walking partner if you are not motivated to walk alone. For instance, your husband, parents, friends, relatives or your children. You can even join a local walking group.

Delaying simple aerobic exercise can lead to obesity and various health issues. Without proper awareness, women may feel lost when it comes to maintaining their health. By overcoming initial reluctance, women can adopt a balanced approach to fitness, directly influencing the well-being of their families. Women are the backbone of India, and their health is crucial to the nation’s well-being.

We hope this article encourages you to prioritize your health. If it did, share your thoughts in the comments below! For more tips on fitness and nutrition, explore our Healthy Reads. Ready to take charge of your health? Get personalized guidance from GOQii’s health experts by subscribing here.

6 Health Benefits of Chia Seeds

966-chia-seeds-for-fitness

Chia seeds, derived from Salvia Hispanica, a desert plant native to Mexico, are tiny edible seeds that are rich in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, calcium, carbohydrates, minerals and antioxidants. These small black and white seeds are especially beneficial for heart patients, individuals suffering from arthritis and those with Type 2 diabetes.

However, it is important to consume these seeds in the right manner. When consumed with milk, water or other liquids these seeds make you feel satiated and help in curbing food craving that in turn helps in maintaining weight. Rich in several micronutrients, Chia seeds also serve as a energy booster and offer numerous health benefits. As Dr. Mehmet Oz from the Oprah show puts it, “They just may be one of the healthiest things around.”

Let’s explore the detailed health benefits of these nutritious seeds:

  1. Lower the risk of heart disease

Chia seeds are considered good for your heart as they help in lowering the bad cholesterol. As per a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, Chia seeds help in reducing triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels and increasing HDL, the good cholesterol. These are thus good for your heart health. The study further revealed that alpha linolenic acid, better known as ALA, present in these seeds prevents high triglyceride levels thereby lowering central obesity.

  1. Reduce Inflammation

Chia seeds are one of the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acids. These are particularly rich in alpha linolenic acid. The presence of these fatty acids helps in reducing inflammation. It is especially good for people suffering from arthritis as high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids in these seeds helps in lubricating various joints and keeping them supple. Omega-3 fatty acids are also converted into prostaglandins that help in relieving pain. These are a good source of fiber too which again is known for reducing inflammation.

  1. Stabilize the blood sugar level

Studies reveal that Chia seeds play an important role in regulating your insulin levels. These seeds lower the rate at which carbohydrates are digested and absorbed in the body. The soluble fiber present in Chia seeds helps stabilize blood glucose level. As per a study conducted by Dr.Vladamir Vuksan from St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, the blood of diabetic patients who consumed Chia seeds regularly for three months was thinner and thus less prone to clotting. It also helped in controlling high blood pressure.

  1. Regulate Bowel Movement

These healthy seeds are rich in fiber that helps in regulating the bowel function efficiently. So next time you experience indigestion or poor bowel movement you know what to have. Merely two tablespoons of Chia seeds contain 10 grams of fiber which is one third of the daily recommended fiber intake.

  1. Control Aging

Antioxidants help in controlling aging and Chia seeds are rich in these. Consuming these regularly thus helps in keeping you healthy and controls aging.

      6. Reduce weight

The consumption of Chia seeds can help in reducing weight especially when these seeds are consumed with water or other liquid as the fiber present in these seeds absorbs water and expands inside the stomach making you feel full. This helps in controlling appetite. Chia is also rich in proteins that again help in reducing hunger.

However, though helpful in reducing weight, the consumption of Chia seeds alone may not have as much impact. Your total calorie intake during a day as well as your overall lifestyle determines your weight.

How to consume Chia seeds?

Chia seeds have a mild nutty flavour and are almost tasteless. You need not necessarily have to ground these seeds as these can be digested whole. Chia seeds can be enjoyed as toppings on different dishes such as cereals, vegetables, rice, puddings and baked deserts. You may even add these to smoothies, yogurt, shakes and soups, mix these with peanut butter or sprout them. However, it is best to have Chia seeds mixed in a glass of plain water, coconut water or cranberry juice.

Chia seeds have emerged as a super food over the last few years. Talking about these seeds, Dr. Andrew Thomas Weil said, “You will begin to see Chia being added to more and more commercial products, such as prepared baby foods, nutrition bars, and baked goods.”

Having talked of all the positives of Chia Seeds, it is important to understand if there is any downside to Chia?  Researcher Catherine Ulbricht, PharmD, cautions that if you have food allergies (especially to Sesame and Mustard seeds) or are on high BP medications or blood thinners you should ask your doctor before adding Chia to your diet.

We hope this article inspires you to incorporate chia seeds into your diet for better health. If you found this information valuable, share your thoughts in the comments below. For more health tips and personalised guidance, consider subscribing to GOQii’s Personalised Health Coaching here.

Mastering Hypertension: A Comprehensive Guide to Lifestyle Management

HypertensionHypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is largely influenced by lifestyle factors. By understanding and making adjustments to five key aspects of daily life — diet, exercise, stress management, sleep quality, and hydration— you can effectively manage this condition and improve overall well-being.

Dietary Adjustments: Sodium plays a crucial role in the body’s fluid balance, but excessive intake can be harmful. A moderate salt intake is essential, particularly by reducing hidden sodium sources found in processed, preserved, and packaged foods (Avoid 3Ps). To naturally support heart health and lower blood pressure, incorporate foods that boost nitric oxide production, such as beetroot, garlic, dark chocolate (in moderation), nuts, seeds, and berries. These foods contain beneficial compounds that help relax blood vessels, promoting better circulation and supporting long-term heart health.

Regular Exercise: A sedentary lifestyle contributes to arterial stiffness and plaque buildup, increasing hypertension risk. Regular cardiovascular activity can prevent these complications and enhance heart function.

Recommended activity levels: 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio per week or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity cardio, Strength training at least twice a week to improve circulation and overall heart health.

Exercise not only improves physical health but also reduces stress by triggering the release of endorphins—the body’s natural mood boosters.

Stress Reduction: Stress is a natural response to daily challenges, but chronic stress can lead to sustained high blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart complications. Implementing stress management techniques can help reduce this burden and support cardiovascular health.

Effective Stress Reduction Strategies: Engage in activities you enjoy, Maintain social connections and positive relationships, Practise deep breathing and relaxation techniques, Incorporate yoga and meditation for mindfulness and balance, Laugh often—yes, laughter can lower stress hormones!

Optimizing Sleep: The quality of sleep plays a vital role in blood pressure regulation. Creating a relaxing sleep environment and healthy bedtime habits can significantly improve sleep and prevent disruptions linked to hypertension.

Sleep Tips for Blood Pressure Control: Reserve the bedroom for rest—avoid working or using electronic devices in bed, Elevate your legs before sleeping to promote circulation, Maintain a quiet, dark, and cool environment for deeper sleep, Practise deep breathing exercises before bedtime, Avoid abrupt awakenings—opt for a gentle alarm tone

Adequate Hydration: Dehydration can increase sodium concentration in the blood, leading to a rise in blood pressure. Ensuring consistent hydration throughout the day supports heart function and helps regulate blood pressure.

Hydration Tips: Drink small amounts of water regularly rather than consuming large amounts at once, Include herbal teas and water-rich fruits & vegetables in your diet, Avoid excessive caffeine and sugary drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.

By embracing these lifestyle modifications, you can take proactive steps towards managing hypertension naturally while enhancing overall health and well-being. Small, consistent changes in diet, exercise, stress management, sleep, and hydration can have a big impact on your heart health.
