5 Astounding Benefits of Walking 100 Steps Post Dinner

Centuries ago, the Greek physician, Hippocrates said, “Walking is man’s best medicine”. This saying is true even today. A recent study by scientists from the University College London proved that walking helps in minimizing the risk of cardiovascular dysfunctions by 31%. It even reduces the risk of deaths from diabetes and related illnesses by 32%.

Walking 10,000 steps everyday will help you stay fit. It can facilitate a healthy living in ways you can’t imagine. Being the safest and easiest exercise possible, walking helps your cardiovascular fitness. It aids weight loss, boosts your mental health and shapes your body.

It’s suggested by some health experts that walking 100 steps before going to sleep every night is good for your health. Usually, we would spend the time post dinner and before sleep in front of a TV or checking emails. Instead, go for a short walk! A minimum of 100 steps will help you burn calories, improve digestion, and control blood sugar levels among other benefits.

  1. Aids Digestion

Walking accelerates the secretion of gastric juices and enzymes responsible for breaking your food into beneficial elements. Under normal conditions, it takes some time for this process to start. This results in the occasional acidity, indigestion and other stomach related complications. Walking around 100 steps will help you sleep better and wake up fresh and healthy.

  1. Maintains Blood Sugar

For those suffering from diabetes (type 2) and extreme blood sugar levels, walking after half hour of having had a meal will help breakdown the food component with more utilization of glucose and improved blood circulation. A physically active body will always need more glucose (sugar level) to burn, thereby controlling/limiting the accumulation of the same.

  1. Helps Metabolism & Facilitates Weight Loss

Any kind of exercise boosts the body’s metabolism, aids blood circulation, burns stored fats and filters unwanted chemicals out of the body. You certainly cannot go through rigorous exercise after dinner. Walking for half a mile solves this problem. Burning of fat and an improved body metabolism also leads to losing weight. For elders, walking after meals is strictly advised to maintain a healthy body. However, this should be practiced by individuals of all ages.

  1. Improves blood circulation

Walking 100 steps after dinner can work up the muscles and facilitate better blood circulation through the body. It only takes a 15 minute stroll to lower the accumulated fat levels in your blood (comprising of harmful cholesterol and triglycerides). Your blood stream will be supplied with more oxygen as your lungs will demand more air.

  1. Relieves stress and improves sleep

Doctors have always advised against going to bed immediately after dinner. If you cannot step out, walking within your home is a good idea as well. For those who lead a sedentary life, walking for a while after dinner aids digestion. Which in turn helps you get better quality sleep.

Make walking after dinner a habit for a lifetime. You will certainly be able to experience positive results within a few weeks. Considered one of the easiest of all exercises. Walking 100 steps after dinner can surprisingly bring a healthy turnaround in your life.

Are Synthetic Vitamins Good for Health?

vitamins-m4r

Before we explain how good or bad these vitamins may be for your body, let us first what exactly is meant by the term syntheticvitamins. These are basically man made vitamins manufactured in laboratories. Synthetic vitamins form an essential part of the multi-vitamin pills as well as certain processed foods.

Now the question is that why does our body require these artificially prepared vitamins and do these actually add value to our diet or are these rather harmful?

Why should we have Synthetic Vitamins?

Our body requires various essential vitamins in order to stay healthy and work efficiently and our daily diet isn’t loaded with enough of these. Not only our food habits but, the quality of food itself is deteriorating with time. The nutritional value of the food is almost lost because of the intense use of pesticides and insecticides andduring the food processing and refining process. So even if you go for fruits and vegetables rich in different vitamins your body may still not get the required amount. Medical practitioners across the globe thus recommend vitamin supplements. Synthetic vitamins are also added to processed foods to boost their nutritional value.

Are Synthetic Vitamins good for health?

Even as researchers and medical professionals promote the consumption of synthetic vitamins there are theories that advice against these. Certain studies show that synthetic vitamins do not contain as much nutritional value as the vitamins present in natural foods. Synthetic vitamins are not as absorbable and bioavailable. It has even been said that instead of doing any good to our body these may rather prove to be harmful. These may particularly have a negative effect on our kidneys.

While others argue that these artificially prepared vitamins are better than the natural ones. However, it is largely believed that while it is best to get your vitamin dose from natural foods you may go for synthetic vitamins but with caution. It is suggested to go for multivitamins that are prepared with whole food sources such as basil, spinach, carrots and other natural herbs and plants. You should refrain from having vitamin supplements that are prefixed with dl or end with –acid, -ate and –ide.

Studies also reveal that while certain vitamins are better when consumed in their natural form others are better off if had in their synthetic form. For instance, it is better to have Vitamin B12 and B9 in their synthetic form as our body can absorb and digest these more easily as compared to Vitamin B present in food. This especially holds good for older people and pregnant ladies. On the other hand Vitamin K and E are better had in their natural forms.

However, having said that, the fact remains that both the forms of vitamins help in treating and preventing various deficiencies.

Health Benefits of the Wonder Spice Cinnamon

Cinnamon sticks and powder on wooden table. Selective focus

Cinnamon, an aromatic spice, is obtained from the inner bark of a tropical evergreen tree belonging to the laurel family. This hot and sweet spice does not only add a special flavour to different cuisines but also helps in combating health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, stomach flu, cold, cough and tooth decay among others.

Let us have a detailed look at the benefits of Cinnamon.

Type 2 Diabetes: It has been proved time and again that cinnamon helps in controlling blood sugar levels and is thus beneficial for Type 2 diabetes patients. Researchers state that cinnamon bark contains potassium, manganese, chromium, copper, calcium, iron iodine, phosphorus, vitamins A, Bi, B2, C and zinc that help in preventing and curing diabetes.

As per a study published in the Journal of Diabetic Medicine, the blood sugar levels of the participants who had cinnamon supplements showed greater improvement as compared to those who had the standard diabetes medicine.

Stomach Flu: Stomach infection can give you sleepless nights. While pain killers may give instant relief however doctors advice against these as they may cause adverse side effects. Cinnamon, known for its strong anti-bacterial properties, is an effective way to cure this condition. The strong anti-bacterial properties of this wonder spice helps in destroying the Salmonella, Campylobacter and Escherichia coli bacteria that cause stomach flu. Cinnamon also works faster as compared to other natural herbs.

Cancer: Cinnamon is also known to prevent cancer. Researchers claim that cinnamon extracts limit the growth of various kinds of cancer including melanoma cancer, colorectal cancer, cervical cancer and lymphoma cancer. It is said that this super spice interferes with a protein that aids the tumors in establishing blood supply which is imperative for their growth.

Weight Loss: Regular consumption of cinnamon helps in thinning your blood and improving blood circulation. Proper circulation of blood in the body boosts your metabolism and thus helps you lose weight. However, studies show that coumarin, the ingredient that mainly helps in thinning the blood is found in large amount in cassia cinnamon and regular and high dose of this particular ingredient is not good for your liver.

Cold and Flu: One of the most common problems, especially during the changing season, cold and flu may also be prevented with the consumption of this aromatic spice. It is the anti-bacterial and warming properties of cinnamon that help in fighting against this ailment.

Besides these, cinnamon also helps in curing arthritis, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, Parkinson’s disease and boosts concentration power.

How to Have Cinnamon?

It is best to boil a few cinnamon sticks in water for some time and add some honey to it. You may even add ginger to it to make it more effective. Various brands sell cinnamon tea however it is better not to go for these as they have artificial flavourings and very little anti-bacterial properties.

It is also recommended to go for Ceylon cinnamon and not Cassia cinnamon which is readily available at the retail stores. This is because cassia cinnamon contains high levels of coumarin which may damage the liver.

6 Health Benefits of Chia Seeds

966-chia-seeds-for-fitness

Chia seeds, obtained from Salvia Hispanica, a desert plant grown in Mexico, are edible seeds that are rich in fiber, omega 3 fatty acids, proteins, calcium, carbohydrates, minerals and antioxidants. These small black and white seeds are especially good for heart patients and those suffering from arthritis and Type 2 diabetes.

However, it is important to consume these seeds in the right manner. When consumed with milk, water or other liquids these seeds make you feel satiated and help in curbing food craving that in turn helps in maintaining weight. Rich in several micronutrients, Chia seeds also serve as energy booster and offer a number of other health benefits. As Dr. Mehmet Oz from the Oprah show puts it, “They just may be one of the healthiest things around.”

Let us have a detailed look at the various benefits offered by these nutritious seeds.

  1. Lower the risk of heart disease

Chia seeds are considered good for your heart as they help in lowering the bad cholesterol. As per a study dated 21st November 2012, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, chia seeds help in reducing triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels and increasing HDL, the good cholesterol. These are thus good for your heart health. The study further revealed that alpha linolenic acid, better known as ALA, present in these seeds prevents high triglyceride levels thereby lowering central obesity.

  1. Reduce Inflammation

Chia seeds are one of the richest sources of omega 3 fatty acids. These are particularly rich in alpha linolenic acid. The presence of these fatty acids helps in reducing inflammation. It is especially good for people suffering from arthritis as high levels of omega 3 fatty acids in these seeds helps in lubricating various joints and keeping them supple. Omega 3 fatty acids are also converted into prostaglandins that help in relieving pain. These are a good source of fiber too which again is known for reducing inflammation.

  1. Stabilize the blood sugar level

Studies reveal that chia seeds play an important role in regulating your insulin levels. These seeds lower the rate at which carbohydrates are digested and absorbed in the body. The soluble fiber present in chia seeds helps stabilize blood glucose level. As per a study conducted by Dr.VladamirVuksan from St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, the blood of diabetic patients who consumed chia seeds regularly for three months was thinner and thus less prone to clotting. It also helped in controlling high blood pressure.

  1. Regulate Bowel Movement

These healthy seeds are rich in fiber that helps in regulating the bowel function efficiently. So next time you experience indigestion or poor bowel movement you know what to have. Merely two tablespoons of chia seeds contain 10 grams of fiber which is one third of the daily recommended fiber intake.

  1. Control Aging

Antioxidants help in controlling aging and chia seeds are rich in these. Consuming these regularly thus helps in keeping you healthy and controls aging.

      6. Reduce weight

The consumption of chia seeds can help in reducing weight especially when these seeds are consumed with water or other liquid as the fiber present in these seeds absorbs water and expands inside the stomach making you feel full. This helps in controlling appetite. Chia is also rich in proteins that again help in reducing hunger.

However, though helpful in reducing weight, the consumption of chia seeds alone may not have as much impact. Your total calorie intake during a day as well as your overall lifestyle determines your weight.

How to consume Chia seeds?

Chia seeds have a mild nutty flavour and are almost tasteless. You need not necessarily have to ground these seeds as these can be digested whole. Chia seeds can be enjoyed as toppings on different dishes such as cereals, vegetables, rice, puddings and baked deserts. You may even add these to smoothies, yogurt, shakes and soups, mix these with peanut butter or sprout them. However, it is best to have chia seeds mixed in a glass of plain water, coconut water or cranberry juice.

Chia seeds have emerged as a super food over the last few years. Talking about these seeds, Dr. Andrew Thomas Weil said, “You will begin to see chia being added to more and more commercial products, such as prepared baby foods, nutrition bars, and baked goods.”

Having talked of all the positives of Chia Seeds, it is important to understand if there is any downside to chia?  Researcher Catherine Ulbricht, PharmD, cautions that if you have food allergies (especially to Sesame and Mustard seeds) or are on high BP medications or blood thinners you should ask your doctor before adding Chia to your diet.
