Why Does Your Body Need Antioxidants?

antioxidantsAntioxidants—also known as “free radical fighters”—have been making waves in the health and wellness industry. But what exactly do they do? Are they genuinely beneficial, or are they just another marketing buzzword? More importantly, is it better to get them from food or supplements? Let’s break it down.

Why Do We Need Antioxidants?

Free radicals are natural by-products produced by the body when processing food, particularly refined and processed foods, trans fats, artificial sweeteners, and certain additives. They are also generated due to environmental factors like pollution, smoking, exposure to pesticides, and even medical treatments such as chemotherapy.

If free radicals build up faster than the body can remove them, they cause oxidative stress, which can lead to cell damage, inflammation, and long-term health issues. This is where antioxidants come in—they help neutralise free radicals and protect cells from damage.

Best Natural Sources of Antioxidants

Different antioxidants serve different functions, so eating a varied diet is key. The best sources come from plant-based foods, particularly brightly coloured fruits and vegetables.

To naturally boost your antioxidant intake, try these simple dietary changes:

  • Eat a variety of fruit and veg – Include a portion in every meal and snack.
  • Sip on green or matcha tea – Packed with polyphenols that support cell health.
  • Spice it up – Turmeric, cumin, oregano, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon enhance flavour and antioxidant content.
  • Snack wisely – Opt for unsalted nuts and seeds, especially Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, and almonds.
  • Don’t forget protein sources – Eggs, dairy, liver, and mushrooms contain key antioxidants such as selenium and vitamin A.

Should You Take Antioxidant Supplements?

While supplements may seem like a quick fix, they aren’t always necessary—and in some cases, they can do more harm than good.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) advises caution with high doses, as they can be harmful or interfere with medications. If you’re considering supplements, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional first.

There are some potential benefits for people at risk of age-related macular degeneration, but again, this should be discussed with a doctor. The best way to get antioxidants is through food. If your diet is lacking in fruit and veg, try starting with two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables daily before considering supplements.

Antioxidants play a crucial role in cell protection and overall health, but balance is key. Instead of relying on supplements, aim to eat a colourful, whole-food diet that provides a wide range of natural antioxidants.

Principles for Handling Couple Misunderstandings

couple misunderstandingsMisunderstandings are a common occurrence in most couple relationships, my life being no different. When I look back and when I look around, I see a lot of times fights erupt because of different or mismatching perspectives of looking at the same issue. Yes, these are some of the commonly heard grievances that couples voice out against each other.

“I wish you had understood me better!”

“You made a decision and did not even think once about me?”

“You always have your own ways in our relationship, never thinking once about me.”

A lot of times, these small misunderstandings get blown out of proportion when the accused person refuses to take up supposed responsibility. I am saying “supposed” because it is not yet confirmed that one person is indeed right. Relationships, after all, are a “subjective” affair with no clear right or wrong. It is on the basis of our belief systems, core values, past experiences, upbringing background that we decide the right or wrong in a given situation. The thing to be noted is in a relationship, we are dealing with two different people who can have two different schools of thought.

Best Practices To Solve Couple Misunderstandings

How do you arrive at a consensus or a mutual ground when a misunderstanding emerges between you and your partner? I am sharing the following best practices/principles to solve the misunderstandings that happen unexpectedly in a relationship.

Principle 1: Misunderstandings are Natural and Unavoidable

Principle 2: Cultural Differences are a Breeding Ground for Misunderstandings

Principle 3: Connect-the-Dot Understanding Usually Replaces Real Understanding

Principle 4: Move from Being Right to Being Curious

Principle 5: Ask questions — Lots of Them!

Principle 6: Recognize that We All Speak a Different Language

Principle 7: Be Responsible for making Sure You Understand and are Understood

Principle 8: Don’t Assume Others Will Connect the Dots Accurately

Principle 9: Leave the Assumption Warehouse. Speak Your Experience — Not Your Conclusions.

Principle 10: Tone and Body Language Matter

Principle 11: Don’t Confuse Feelings and Judgements

Principle 12: Stay in Your Green Zone — If You Assume, Assume Benevolence

There’s no way around it, being misunderstood sucks. It can make you feel frustrated, upset, and hopeless. It can feel even worse in times of conflict. I faced this once when the man of the house had 2 men coming unplanned with liquor and after a drinking round, one of them lost their senses. I reacted in that situation and it pained me intensely to see that man found no reason in my distress! Yes, I was partly misunderstood and was not taken seriously. I suffered greatly from that lack of attunement.

This is because one of our deepest needs is for others to understand or tune into us. This desire to be “seen” begins right from our childhood. Take kids, for example: when they play hide-and-seek, they love to be found. Yes, misunderstandings are unavoidable but approaching this situation with the right tools and understanding, you have a great leeway to turn this conflict into a catalyst for connection.

We hope this article helps you form a stronger connection with your partner! Do leave your thoughts in the comments below. For more articles by our Sexual Wellness Expert Pallavi Barnwal, check out Healthy Reads.

Want Younger Looking Skin? Try These Foods Now!

younger looking skinThey say real beauty comes from within. Well, people may have different perspectives over this quote but in the opinion of a Nutritionist, what food you put inside your body, is what reflects on your skin! Ageing is a normal physiological phenomenon which starts from the inside out. This makes it imperative to take care of your diet to prevent the effects of ageing. With advancing age, the proteins and pigments of our skin start to deteriorate. However, with a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition, in the absence of disease, one can still manage to have a plump skin. Just like our emotional troubles can be seen on the face by the way of our expressions, the internal troubles of our body show up on the skin. If you feed your body with the right kind of food, it radiates right on the skin. Let’s look at some foods to get that younger looking skin you’ve always wanted!

Foods For Younger Looking Skin

  1. Water: As simple and feeble as it may sound, water is the most important component of a skincare regime. In all forms, whether luke warm, chilled or infused, water is the most effective tool for younger looking skin and to fight any skin abnormalities. It cleanses the excess metabolites and harmful substances that may accumulate beneath the layers of skin. Water helps keep the skin moisturised and flush out infectious agents.
  2. Berries, Melons and Citrus Fruits: Berries are natural chemical exfoliators. They contain salicylic acid which is a popular ingredient in beauty products known for anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Berries are also rich in Vitamin C and ellagic acid that can help reduce acne. Rich in Vitamin A, C and B, melons can prove to be effective in maintaining good skin health. They can also improve your digestive system and prevent constipation. This, in turn, aids in clearing up the skin. Melons are also effective in treating psoriasis, a dry skin condition that causes itchy, flaky and red patches of skin. The rich Vitamin C content of citrus fruits can effectively fight free radical action, which prevents skin ageing. Citric acid helps curb the bacterial action and pathogens present under the skin. As we age, our body’s ability to produce collagen decreases and the elasticity of the skin too. Vitamin C helps repair and rejuvenate the skin, helping in wound healing and building connective tissue, leading to younger looking skin.
  3. Turmeric (Curcuma Longa): Being the most potent spice, Turmeric helps fight cell damage, chronic disease and aging, helping maintain younger looking skin. All this due to the powerful pigment, curcumin.
  4. Nuts and Seeds: Nuts are densely packed with a variety of skin healthy nutrients such as proteins, vitamin E, essential oils, minerals, and antioxidants. Soaked almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds and sesame seeds are the richest sources of vitamin E – which are very helpful to protect the skin from the UV rays of the sun. Vitamin E also helps strengthen your skin, avoid skin infections and give it a radiant glow.
  5. Dark Chocolate: contains cocoa flavanols. These are very potent antioxidants that protect the skin from the oxidative damage caused by pollution or sunlight. It also protects the skin by enhancing blood flow, which helps by nourishing and moisturizing it. Make sure to choose only dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa in it.
  6. Tomatoes: Tomato and tomato juice are high in lycopene, a natural carotenoid that fights pigmentation and darkening due to ageing or stress.
  7. Virgin Coconut Oil: Used in cooking, it slows down the aging process by lowering oxidative stress and relieving pressure on the liver, it nourishes the skin and hair to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and clears dark patches and cellulite.
  8. Avocados: are high in monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fats that are essential to nourish the skin and prevent dryness. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory to keep the immune system effectively functioning. The lutein and zeaxanthin in this fruit may help to protect the skin from UV damage. It is also full of Vitamins A, B, C, E, and K which helps you get the glow of younger looking skin.
  9. Leafy Greens: Spinach, Collard greens, Radish greens and Kale are excellent for replenishing tired skin and dark under-eye shadows due to their high iron and magnesium content. These leafy greens are rich in Vitamin K that improve skin cell regrowth for a better complexion.
  10. Cucumbers: are more water than anything else. Oh so hydrating! Thus, they possess an extraordinary cooling effect. The peel of a cucumber contains antioxidants, Vitamin C and K, which can aid in skin whitening and can also reduce the appearance of fine lines. They also help in reducing puffy eyes and dark circles.

We hope this article helps you achieve that younger looking skin you’ve always desired. Before you switch to any of these foods, please ensure that you reach out to your doctor, nutritionist or dietitian in case you have allergies or any underlying medical conditions.
