Immunity is the ability of our body to defend itself against infections, diseases, or other unwanted biological invasions. The higher your immunity, the less likely you are to fall sick. If you are someone who frequently falls prey to cold and cough, think no more, you just have weak immunity. Being the body’s first and last line of defence, immunity is essential to keep your body strong and resilient. There are many factors that determine how good your immunity system is for example, the area you live in, your lifestyle, eating habits etc.

According to the GOQii India Fit Report 2019 Titled-Insurance: An Investment in Health, around 25% of the population in India suffer from a constant cough, cold, and sore throat. That speaks volumes about the immunity system of an average Indian, doesn’t it? In order to understand Immunity on a deeper note, let’s take a look at how the human body builds its Immunity.

“The younger your body is, the more prone it is to getting a cough or cold. The body is developing at this stage to become stronger and more immune to illness.” Indicates, the India Fit Report 2019. The data collected showed that 29% of the teenagers in India fall sick annually, followed by 26% of adults, senior citizens at 21% and at last older adults at 19%.

Further, the report adds that teenagers catch a cold and cough easily compared to adults because as you get older, your body matures and builds a much stronger immunity to keep you healthy. The India Fit Report advise you to take measures to build your immunity if you are over 20 years old and often fall sick.

Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Chennai recorded the most cases of cold and cough as per the GOQii India Fit report 2019. A total of 11% Indians fell sick at least 3 times a year and this showed a serious lack of immunity. Delhi amidst other cities stood out for the highest percentage of people falling sick at 13%. All of these nos. indicate a serious case of weak immunity among Indians.

“With increased pollution and constantly changing the environment, the air we breathe and the food we eat is all contaminated. We really have to fight to build our immune system which is what helps us survive a day on day,” says the India Fit Report 2019

Here are some ways to boost your immunity and fight off diseases efficiently, as per The GOQii India it Report 2019.

  1. Get Adequate Rest and Sleep: Sleep is very important for a healthy body because adequate sleep ensures that the body is well relaxed and this also helps the cells to repair and replace, thus contributing to strong immunity. Adequate rest also includes getting quality sleep without distractions, so keep that in mind.
  1. Eliminate sugar and processed foods: Processed foods come packed with refined sugar, which is a major culprit in weakening your immune system. If you are planning to boost your immunity, it is advised to avoid sugar content in your diet.
  1. Boost Gut Health: Having a healthy gut and intestinal system is very important for our well being. A healthy gut hosts healthy bacteria which teach our immune system about what to fight against. It works like an Artificial Intelligence system which is constantly learning. In short, if you have bad gut health, you will have an inexperienced immune system.
  1. Manage stress effectively: Many studies have proved that the higher your stress, the weaker your immunity system. A stressed out person is more likely to fall sick than a relaxed person. So try to keep the stress under control, it plays a major role in boosting your immunity
  1. Include Indian spices in meals: Spices have been widely used in the field of medicine in India and China. They not only add taste and flavour to your food but also help you build your immunity. Add spices like Ginger, Garlic, Turmeric, Clove and Cumin to your meals and stay free from diseases.
  2. Limit exposure to chemicals:  Exposure to chemicals play a very big role in weakening your immunity. You’re most likely to come in contact with them in the form of Pesticides on your fruits and vegetables, so make sure you wash them properly before consumption.

There are only so many times you can say, “Just water for me, thanks,” Water is a healthy and safe bet, sure. In fact, it can’t be beaten. No drink can match water, isn’t it? Water is a panacea for many health problems

70 % body is comprised of water. There are innumerable benefits of having water. It promotes weight loss, boosts immunity, increases brain power, prevents hair fall, renders glowing skin, helps in clearing the gut, removes toxins from the body and many more.

So what do you do when you want more options but don’t want to stray from the healthy side of things? Luckily, there are actually several beverages that can do you one favour or another while spicing up your waterlogged palette. 

In this blog, I am going to talk about the healthiest drinks in India. Some of them are my absolute favourites and I include them in my diet throughout the year. Not only these drinks are tasty and easy to make but also offer numerous health benefits

From digestion related problems to skin issues, hair fall issues to serious problems of kidney, liver and heart, these drinks serve as pure nectar for the body.

There are sometimes when we feel like drinking something hot and cool, sweet and salty, morning and evening, summer and winters. I have chosen some most versatile health drinks

Starting with # 7 RAGI MALT

Ragi Malt Drink

If you are looking for a quick and healthy breakfast, try this one. Considering the nutritional and therapeutic value of Finger millet or Ragi for the human body, it is quite surprising and unfortunate that it is totally absent in most people’s diets today. 2 years ago, I read about it and even heard about the benefits and started having it regularly, since then this drink has been a part of my routine.

Quick Recipe:

  1. Ragi flour 3-4 tsp in a bowl with a little bit water poured in it which should be enough to make a paste of it.
  2. Then boil 1 cup of water and rock salt according to the taste and add ragi paste
  3. Keep stirring it for 2-3 mins, once it cools down to add some lemon juice 1/2 and some curd (50 gms) in it.
  4. Mix it well and your drink is ready, you can even have this in your breakfast when you are running late for work or it is a rescuer for people who have excuses to skip breakfast especially for the weight watchers.

# 6 Turmeric Milk

Turmeric Milk

We all must have tried it in our childhood or otherwise due to its anti-inflammatory properties but this turmeric milk recipe is quite different especially in winters.

Recipe:

  1. 1 glass of milk to boil (200gms)
  2. On boiling it add ½ tsp of turmeric
  3. Add a pinch of black pepper and ¼ tsp of Cow Ghee
  4. Let it boil with all these ingredients

Turmeric has antibacterial and viral properties and is considered a super herb since ancient times. The purpose of adding Black pepper helps in absorbing the turmeric in the body. The combination of ghee+ milk= pre nectar (acts as a panacea for many health problems) keep infections at bay this winter. Have it before 1 hour of going to bed.

Mistake 1> putting too much water and just 1 lemon to avoid acidity and increase water intake

Mistake 2 >Putting honey in hot water which may act against your body

Recipe:

  1. 200 ml lukewarm water, mix the juice of 1 lemon and 1tbsp honey
  2. Do not gulp it, gradually sip it down and finish it

Have it at least 2-3 times a week, if you want you can have it every day, anytime

Honourable Mention:

Whenever you feel like drinking something Drink water! The best way is to keep it in a copper vessel on a wooden surface and keep it overnight and drink first thing in the morning and don’t pour it in other utensil and drink it straight from the copper vessel to multiply the nutrients in it.

I believe all the above drinks are very convenient and can be added in our fast-paced busy lives, as looking good is not enough- feeling good is what matters.

Ingredients:

Green tea bags-2

1/3 cup fruit juice without sugar (peach, plum, mango, strawberry or orange)

1 cup ice

Method: Put 2 green tea bags in 2/3 cup boiling water for 5 minutes. Remove the tea bags and let it cool. Stir 1/3 cup of unsweetened fruit juice. To serve, pour tea juice blend into 2 ice-filled glasses. (You can add jaggery or honey for sweetness)

  1. FRUITY BUBBLE TEA

Same as the above ingredients.

Method: Use green or black tea bags, substitute milk with 1/3 cup fruit juice such as orange, mango or peach. No sugar to be added.

  1. LEMON GINGER TEA COOLER

LEMON GINGER TEA COOLER

Method:  Bring 1 cup of water to simmer in a saucepan. Add 1.5tbsp of chopped or peeled fresh ginger. Remove from the flame and let it steep for 20min. Strain the juice into a glass. Add 2tbsp fresh lemon juice and 1tsp sugar or sugar-free. Let it cool. Put 2 green or black tea bags in 2 cups of boiling water for a few minutes. Remove the tea bags and let it chill. To serve, pour the lemon ginger infusion into 2 ice-filled glasses. Top each glass with chilled green tea and garnish with lemon slices.

Serve these healthy coolers to your guests or enjoy in kitty parties, or any occasion. They are a good way to quench your thirst after a hot day under the sun.

Four pillars to lead a healthy and happy life

Having said that yoga is not about asana alone and pranayama, yoga is a way of life. Good health depends on the long-term commitment and the foundation for that needs to be built on four important pillars. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is state of physical, mental and social well being.

The Four Pillars of a healthy lifestyle is AHAR (Food), VIHAR (Recreation), ACHAR (Routines), VICHAR (Thoughts)

  1. The first Pillar is AHAAR

AHAR means food. “Annam Brahma—means the food is Brahman (Lord of creation). There is an old adage which says, “As the food so the mind, As the mind so the Man”. This saying depends on what you eat, how you eat and when you eat. Every bite you put in your mouth counts for your well being and lifespan, but this does not mean you start binge eating. Eating in moderation is key to maintain a healthy life.

According to Ayurveda, our food is categorized into three segments: Sattvik, Rajasic, Tamasic,

Satvik food is very simple food and gives loads of energy and keeps the mind stable. This food type includes Milk and milk products fresh fruits, dry fruits, seasonal veggies, unrefined cereals, pulses, spices like ginger, pepper, turmeric, cumin, honey, jaggery, Ghee, and oil

Rajasic food creates a restless state of mind. These foods are difficult to digest like non-veg, non-sprouted beans and pulses, garlic, onion, unseasonal veggies and salt.

Tamasic food creates a lethargic state of mind. This includes food which is stale or cooked over a long period. All refined, processed, artificial flavoured foods, deep-frozen foods, pickles, jams, beverages, deep-fried foods, liquor, tobacco, drugs.

The ancient literature says, “One should break one’s night long fast at the time of sunrise and end ones last meal at the time of sunset”. Going by what our ancient literature says, we all know BREAKFAST should be our first meal and that should be king sized. Whatever, we eat in the morning is absorbed and assimilated to the maximum. Food taken during the lunch should be easily digestible and dinner should be the lightest meal of the day.

When you eat food. Your state of mind will decide how food is going to be utilised by the body. Eat your meals with full concentration. Chew your food well and enjoy the subtle taste of each food items. Most important avoid using mobile or watch TV while eating food.

  1. The second pillar is VIHAR

Vihar means recreation. The literal meaning is moving or walking. Stress is a common factor these days. Everybody is stressed on a day to day basis and the reasons for stress can vary and spend time with oneself is a big task. Recreation, relaxation and enjoying family time rejuvenates the body and mind. It’s a kind of anti-depressant for us.

Spending some time in activities which you enjoy clears off mind, relieves depression and anxiety, elevates your mood and gives a feeling of well being.

Active creative hobbies like gardening, painting, playing musical instruments engage all sensory organs and releases pent-up emotions and recharges the mind. Playing sports is another way of relaxing body and mind.

Relaxation is the cornerstone of well-balanced personality. Maintain the relaxed attitude throughout the day. Relaxation is an art which needs to be cultivated. It is important for our body, emotions and our nervous system. Regular exercise or relaxation keeps you fit and keeps disorders at bay.

  • The Third pillar is ACHAR—(Routine)

How often is it that your day goes unplanned and you get hassled with too much work in the day? Our mental health and being are dependent on better routines (achaar). Regularity and sincerity are two major components of a good routine. The best example of following a routine is the SUN-It rises and sets daily without any excuse.

Plan your day in advance. Incorporate all necessary task for self, work, food, recreation and sleep. The solutions to many of our difficulties in life lie in setting out right habits and right routines. Dr Abdul Kalam had said, “You cannot change your future but you can change your habits and your habits will surely change your future”

  1. The fourth pillar is VICHAAR (Thoughts)

Our intellectual health is rightly dependent on how we think. Our thoughts are food for our mind. Buddha says, “Based on your thinking you become the person you are”. If you think you are weak, you will be weak. If you think you are strong, you will be strong. Manage your thought process correctly. Always develop a good attitude and enlarge your vision.

Good thoughts process can be added in daily life by reading good books, scriptures, attending Satsang (religious discourses), reciting holy mantras, observing rituals, recollecting good experiences and thinking positive in all situations.

So let me share a quick small recipe for happiness with you.  If you add this in your life this might add spark to your life.

Recipe for Happiness:

Ingredients:

2 heaped cup of patience

1 heart full of love

2 hands full of generosity

1 hand full of understanding

Method:

Mix all the ingredients, sprinkle generosity and kindness

Add faith and mix well.

Add a dash of laughter. Spread over a period of time

Serve smilingly to everyone you meet to spread happiness.

Have a healthy, Happy life ahead!
