Kokum – The Wonder Fruit That Can Keep You Cool!

Kokum BenefitsWe have all been experiencing the brunt of the unbearable heat this month. With temperatures soaring high, even a walk under the sun can be a strenuous experience. What if we told you that there was a way to cool your body naturally? Would you try it? This fruit, grown only in the coastal regions of South India, has powerful cooling abilities. You are all familiar with it. We are in fact talking about Kokum!

It’s scientific name is Garcinia Indica, and is mostly used in Gujarat, Maharashtra and other Southern regions. The Indian Spice Board has classified it both as a spice as well as a fruit. As a fruit, it is usually broken into half and dried. Colour ranges from purple to dark black. The darker the colour, the better it is. Dried Kokum usually stays for a year if placed in an airtight container.

How Do You Use It?

  • Culinary purpose: It is known for its sour taste. It can be replaced for tamarind in dishes like Sambhar, coconut curries, fish curries, regular yellow Gujarati style dal. Two or three small dried kokums are enough to prepare a single dish.
  • As a coolant in summers: Kokum Sherbet and Solkadhi

1. Kokum Sherbet

A glass of Kokum Sherbet before you step out in the sun or once you come indoors will do wonders. Usually, you get ready-made pulp which needs to be diluted with water OR you can prepare this pulp at home. Here is the short method on how to prepare it at home:

  1. Soak a cup of Kokum in water for 3-4 hours
  2. Once soft, mash them and strain the liquid
  3. In a pan, take the leftover pulp, add sugar (same amount as kokum), 1tsp of cumin seeds powder and salt as per taste
  4. Stir and cook this mixture until sugar melts.
  5. Add the strained Kokum water and cook for 5 more minutes
  6. Let it cool and store the Kokum concentrate in a container

2. Solkadhi

This drink is made from coconut milk and Kokum. It is usually consumed with a rice preparation or it is drunk after meals. Here’s the method to prepare it at home:

  • Soak a cup of Kokum and keep it aside for 30 mins
  • Once soft, mash them and strain the liquid
  • Add half a glass of coconut milk to the liquid and stir well
  • Temper it with cumin seeds if you like

3. Kokum Butter

Used for cosmetic purposes only, Kokum Butter helps to unclog pores, kills bacteria, reduces acne and smoothens skin. It as a whole or its products like Kokum powder, oil, butter or Kokum rinds are all available.

Health Benefits 

  • Ayurvedic Uses: Eases the episodes of diarrhoea, dysentery and piles by fighting against bacteria like E. Coli. The cooling effect of Kokum helps in getting relief from burning sensations due to stomach ulcers. It fights against ulcer-causing bacteria Helicobacter Pylori.
  • Weight Management: Want to lose those extra kilos? Hydroxycitric Acid found in Kokum is an anti-obesity agent. It gives you a feeling of fullness and you end up eating less.
  • Anti-Cancer Effect: Garcinol, an antioxidant found in Kokum inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
  • Relieves Anxiety and Depression: Serotonin is a  hormone. Hydroxycitric Acid in it increases the level of this feel-good hormone, thereby reduces the anxiety.
  • Slows Down Skin Ageing: Kokum butter helps to smoothen the skin. It is found in various lip balms, creams and moisturizers. Ageing happens when an enzyme, Elastase breaks down the Elastin of skin (Elastin keeps your skin supple and intact). It inhibits the action of Elastase and thereby stops the breaking of the pigment Elastin.

How You Can Stay Healthy During Summer!

healthy during summerIt’s the last month of summer and it’s only getting hotter by the day. During summers, many do not feel like eating due to the heat. Most love to keep hydrating. But, it is important to have a good diet (nutrition) as well as hydrate yourself. Opting for either/or is a bad idea. Here are some simple tips for staying healthy during summer that everyone can follow.

How You Can Stay Healthy During Summer 

  1. Add curd to your daily meal plan: For all those who suffer from constipation, gas and acidity during summer, this one is an absolute must-have on a daily basis.
  2. Sabja seeds: Not just a quick detox but an instant cooler and bloating reliever. Sabja seeds are different from chia seeds and can be consumed only after soaking. They can be consumed with curd, buttermilk, smoothies or in any liquid.
  3. Coconut water: Prevents dehydration, cramp & relieves migraine during PMS. It’s rich in electrolytes, can replenish your electrolyte stores in no time when you have to work too much under the scorching sun.
  4. Jeera (cumin seeds): Calm your nerves and aid your fat burning efforts in Summer. Boil 1 tsp Jeera in a glass of water. Sieve and drink it warm after 30mins of eating a meal.
  5. Jowar and Jaun (Barley) Sattu water: Brain food, cooling in nature, best for weight loss. Add Jowar and Jaun in normal wheat flour in equal proportion to aid weight loss and also to have a cooling effect on the body.
  6. Include Juices and Smoothies: Consume Lemon, Aloe Vera, Wheatgrass, Bottle Gourd, Mint and Amla juices for glowing skin during summer. Avoid packaged fruit juices, cold drinks and opt for fresh fruit juices instead. In fact, you can try fruit smoothies and Lassi (butter Milk) with Hing (asafoetida), Pudina (mint) and roasted Jeera (cumin seeds) as mid snacks rather than colas and tinned fruit juices. Avoid having fruit shakes (mixing fruits with milk) to prevent antioxidants loss.
  7. Start your day with seasonal fruits in summers like Litchi, Grapes, Jamun, Melons and Mangoes (acts as a cleanser, soak mangoes in water 20 mins before consumption for cooling effect). Having fruits first thing in the morning also gives instant energy and makes you feel fresh, rather than a cup of tea.
  8. Hydrate with normal water or infused drinks: Lemon water with rock salt is the best detox drink which alkalizes your body and can help combat acidity.
  9. Exercise for 30 mins 5 times in a week for good blood circulation and to avoid a migraine and headache during summer.

We may feel it’s because of the heat, but often, our lifestyle and food habits are also responsible for this change. In this view, continuing with wrong food choices may lead to skin eruptions, profuse sweating, summer strokes and gastric disturbances like indigestion, diarrhoea, bloating, stomach aches, vomiting and dehydration. Let’s look at what we should eat and avoid during summer! 

What Should You Eat? 

  • Fluids: It’s no secret that water is required in ample amounts during summer to keep ourselves hydrated and replenish the lost water via sweating. But it doesn’t have to be plain water. Include the lesser boring and interesting options of Aam panna, coconut water, infused waters and lemon water to fulfill the daily fluid requirements along with the goodness of vital minerals!
  • Melons and cucumbers: Water melons, musk melons and cucumbers are found abundantly during summers. They are profusely watery and chock-a-block with vitamins, minerals, fiber and essential antioxidants. Having them will make sure you avoid dehydration and summer strokes.
  • Leafy and gourd vegetables: These are easily digestible vegetables and contain all the necessary minerals and vitamins needed to keep your strength during summers intact. You may never see anyone overeating a leafy or a gourd vegetable. Light on the stomach and simpler to process by the body, make them the staples of summers.
  • Onion and garlic: Allium and Sulphur compounds from onion and garlic are antidotes to heat strokes. They are age old methods to cure summer sickness and work just right till date. Include them in your meals and witness the headache caused because of being out for long in the sun wearing off.
  • Curd or buttermilk: Packed with calcium, protein and probiotics, yoghurt can be the rescue for all digestive troubles and generally running it smoothly. Make a bowl of plain home made curd or buttermilk with fresh mint, cumin and black salt, a regular in summer afternoons.
  • Sabja seeds: These seeds soaked for 10 minutes in water are a potent ease to the digestive system. They cool the body down from the inside like a whiff of cool air would do from the outside. Besides that, it is also a source of essential fatty acids like omega 3 and fiber.

What Should You Avoid? 

  • Commercially sold ice creams: The idea of avoiding ice creams during summers might sound bizarre, yet, there can be healthier options for this chilled indulgence. Conventionally, ice creams contain high amounts of fat and sugar that make them difficult to digest and easier to cause weight gain. Also, due to frequent change in the temperature of cold storages, ice creams often develop disease causing bacteria and should be avoided during summers. Consuming ice cream just after being exposed to sunlight might cause sore throat and fever due to sudden temperature fluctuation. Having home frozen yoghurt, kulfis or crushed fruit pulps can be occasional substitutes.
  • Hot drinks: While the external heat has already led our body temperatures to rise, consuming anything beyond room temperature causes further increase in the overall temperature and results in disturbances of the digestive system causing bloating and bitter burping. Keep beverages like hot tea and coffees to the bare minimum.
  • Fried foods: Fried and greasy foods are not easy to digest and often leave us bloated. Fried food makes the skin oily during the humid times, giving rise to skin problems like acne and also harms the digestive system.
  • Spicy foods: Capsaicin found in chilies adversely boosts the body heat and results in excessive sweating, leading to dehydration and sickness. When the body is already fighting off heat, adding hot and spicy food irritates the stomach lining and may cause hyper acidity and belching.
  • Meat: It is known to all that meat and meat products are not easy to digest. Excessive consumption of meat in the summer season increases the pressure on the digestive system. It contains high amounts of fat, proteins and carbohydrates which heat up the body while digesting it.
  • Over indulging on mangoes: Excess of anything is bad and mangoes are no exception to this rule! Filled with healthy antioxidants and vitamins, mangoes are a must have for summers. However, they are high in natural sugar and overindulgence can cause skin infections, increase in body heat and a number of undesirable symptoms such as diarrhoea, upset stomach, and headaches, etc.

Summer Health Hazards You Need To Be Aware Of

summer health hazardsIndian summers were always hot, but now they have turned lethal. Studies indicate that temperatures across many districts in India will exceed by two degree Celsius by the end of the next two or three decades. So our huge population is likely to be exposed to the risk of summer hazards. Hence, I feel the need to talk about the most common summer health hazards.

Common Summer Health Hazards 

Here are the 3 most common summer health hazards you need to watch out for and how you can prevent/manage them.

1. Dehydration

It occurs when more water and fluids leave the body than enter it. Even low levels of dehydration can cause symptoms like increased thirst, fatigue, blurred vision, headache and muscle cramps. We all know that the human body is roughly 75% of water and without this water it cannot survive.

How can you prevent it?
Always make sure you drink lots of water during these scorching summer months (approx 35ml per kg body weight). Apart from this, drinks for replacing body fluids can be coconut water, aloe vera juice, amla juice, fruit juice, vegetable juice, buttermilk, sugarcane juice or an electrolyte drink. But fruit or electrolyte juice will be better if diluted to half the strength with water to moderate sugar or salt intake from those drinks. Drinks with alcohol or caffeine should be avoided as these dehydrate the body.

2. Heat Stroke

Sun stroke or heat stroke occurs from extreme exposure to heat and sunlight and is considered as a medical emergency. Symptoms of heat stroke include dizziness, nausea, headache, vomiting and even fainting.

How can you prevent it?
Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose fitting and cotton clothing. Stay indoors as much as possible and schedule outdoor activities carefully. Most importantly, take a good amount of fluids and hydrate well before stepping out. If caught with mild sunstroke, settling teas like chamomile, peppermint, fennel seeds or our own aam panna also helps best.

3. Food Poisoning

Summer heat raises the risk of food borne diseases. Food poisoning cases are one of the most common summer health hazards because bacteria grow faster in warmer weather. Symptoms of food poisoning include cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

How can you prevent it?
To avoid food poisoning, we simply have to be careful about what we put in our mouth. Furthermore, we should make sure that we eat only well cooked food and try to consume it as soon as possible once it’s cooked. Eat only fresh cut salads and fruits when eating raw. Do not leave food long outside before refrigerating. Try to refrigerate all the leftover food as soon as steam stops rising from it.

Ample rest, good hydration, eating light and, last but not the least, moving your body adequately helps us stay fit and healthy from summer health hazards. Prevention remains the key, as lack of awareness is one of the main reasons for the near fatal result of these hazards.
