Sandeep Gupta Beats Acidity & Gets Healthier With GOQii

Sandeep Gupta

Sandeep Gupta is 55 years old and is a businessman who renders services to the Ministry of Defense. He was overweight at 86kg and suffered a lot from gastric and chest pain. This continued for 5 years and he was on medication as well. However, in the past 6 months, some positive changes have helped him lose 9kg and take control of his life and health. So what happened in the last months?

Before Joining GOQii

Before he came onboard GOQii, Sandeep Gupta used a smart watch which he says didn’t help much. There was no guidance and he would exercise a little. Since his work involved travel, he had no control of his diet, he used to eat out most of the time and that caused persistent acidity issues. He had to take an antacid daily.

To add to this, he also suffered from allergy issues for which he had to take anti-allergy medication. He says he was at least 9-10kg overweight.

Around May 2021, he came across GOQii on the internet and bought a tracker with a 3 month personal health coaching subscription. He got a coach to guide him on a daily basis. He says, “It was pleasant to have a coach guide me on my diet and exercise”.

Making Lifestyle Changes With GOQii

He had his first intro call with his GOQii Coach and explained his issues to her. He says, “My GOQii Coach understood my issues and slowly started making changes. First was to improve water intake from 1L to 2-2.5L. This was to better digestion, prevent toxin build up and stomach inflammation. Then the coach slowly brought about dietary changes.”

Salads and fruits became a part of his regular diet and he started eating at proper intervals. These habits helped him a lot and he did not experience acidity issues anymore. His energy levels also improved.

His antacid medication was reduced to once a week. Gradually, more healthy habits such as beginning the day with a fruit, lemon water post meals and Surya Namaskars were introduced. His acidity issues improved to 80%. For further improvement and to support fat loss, regular tea was replaced with ginger tea.

He was also introduced to strengthening exercises along with daily walks and cycling on alternate days. 30 minutes of exercise either in the morning or evening became mandatory. Thanks to these changes, in the last 6 months he lost 9kg and his current weight stands at 77kg.

He says that, “My GOQii Coach’s guidance has come as a boon to me. My wife was worried prior to me joining GOQii, as she was concerned about how I am going to deal and get over my gastric and acidity issues. But now, she finds that I am more relaxed and doing much better. My family has also started benefiting and they are taking health seriously as well. It’s a ripple positive effect that has trickled down to the family. As a head of the family I feel proud that I am able to set an example for my family to lead a healthy lifestyle. Simply eating right and exercising daily can make so much of a difference to one’s life. It’s just amazing!”

What Does His GOQii Coach Have To Say About His Transformation?

Sandeep Gupta joined GOQii in May 2021. Since his work involved lots of travelling, it led to eating the wrong foods at the wrong time, which caused persistent acidity issues for which he had to take antacid medication.

To add to it, he also had allergy issues and was on medication for the same. Other medical issues involved low blood pressure and a history of epilepsy, for which he had stopped medication 4-5 years ago. He was also at least 9-10kg overweight.

After completing our Intro call, the first step was to gradually improve his water intake. Next was to replace the intake of packaged/processed food, which are harmful for managing acidity due to their sugar, trans fat and refined carb content. They were replaced with roasted snacks.

To alkalinize the system, also for fat loss, I asked him to add salads to his diet. This intervention led to a 50% decrease in acidity and reduced frequency of antacid to once a week. His energy levels improved after 2-3 weeks. Currently, he has reached his ideal weight and is healthier and happy!

We hope Sandeep Gupta’s journey inspires you to make a lifestyle change. Do you also suffer from acidity issues? Want to get healthier? Sign up for GOQii’s personal health coaching and speak to a certified GOQii Coach now: https://goqiiapp.page.link/bsr

Increase Productivity At Work & Improve Health With This New Challenge

GOQii Corporate Challenge

How was your experience working from home? While it did seem like a good break, the unexpected shift of remote working presented some issues that were difficult to deal with. Along with maiming profits, delayed appraisals, curbed salaries, increase in time spent doing work and disrupting respective corporate cultures, COVID-19 also impacted employees in ways they didn’t bargain for.

Problems Faced While Working From Home

  1. Detachment & Isolation: Whichever industry you work in, a workplace gives you a sense of shared purpose and connection. With lesser opportunities of bonding and interaction while working from home, team members began to feel more isolated and disengaged from their workplace. No amount of video conferences can fix this feeling of detachment and isolation.
  2. Loss of Focus: While some enjoyed an isolated space where they could concentrate on their work, most didn’t have a remote space they could comfortably work from. Distraction by family members, pets and other factors caused more stress and lack of focus.
  3. Mental Health Issues: Given the state of affairs during the early onset of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown, it was easy to get stressed about the future. Feelings of fear, anxiety, sadness and frustration were common across all age groups. Working from home made it difficult to reach out to colleagues and friends for support. In a study we conducted, we found that around 43% Indians were plagued with depression. A number that only saw an upward trend. “Anxiety is one of the symptoms of depression. Most people are anxious on various counts. For some it is about not having a regular routine as they did in normal times,” says Divya Thampi, an Emotional Wellness Coach on GOQii Play. To read more about the impact of COVID-19 on mental health, read the report here.
  4. Overwhelmed With New Tech: We already use a significant amount of apps and softwares daily. In the business landscape, everything is driven by data and tech. Adaptability aside, the sudden onset of the pandemic and the subsequent remote working scene forced us to work with new tools for scheduling, conferencing, managing, etc. faster than before.
  5. Feedback, Recognition & Guidance: During pre-lockdown times, it was easy for a manager to step up to your desk to share positive feedback or guide you. In a remote working environment, this form of interaction has suffered greatly. Lack of feedback, recognition and guidance can make one feel further isolated, doubt their skills or lose confidence in their work.
  6. Health & Wellbeing: Disruption of routine also meant that people were tied down to their couches, beds or desks at home with little movement. Those walks after lunch, chasing trains and any little movement we had while we worked from the office were tossed out the window. Eating habits also suffered and with work hours extending for some, sleep suffered greatly – only adding to stress.

At GOQii, we believe that a healthy employee is a happy employee and a happy employee is a productive employee. Sadly, that was not the case during the lockdown. In view of these issues which are quite persistent even now, what can corporations do to motivate their employees, build team spirit, foster bonding, improve health and increase productivity?

GOQii Corporate Challenge

What if we told you that there was a fun way to build team spirit, improve health and performance at work? The GOQii Corporate Challenge – an inter-corporate health challenge, can be the solution you’ve been looking for.

It’s a 60 day engagement program, starting from 13th December to 10th February, where corporates can get their employees to participate on an individual, team and corporate level. The challenges will consist of a 30 day steps challenge and daily social media spot challenges (where you can win daily prizes) – all tracked by a live leaderboard.

The program also consists of daily fitness sessions i.e. 150+ sessions in 60 days starting with Yoga, Mind and Body sessions at 7 AM, Health Talks at 3 PM and High Intensity Workout sessions at 7 PM.

What’s more, at the end of the GOQii Corporate Challenge, 1 in every 4 players stands a chance to win exciting prizes such as hotel stays, luxury watches, smartphones, gadgets and exclusive merchandise.

A little bit of healthy competition like this, can definitely ease the strain left by COVID-19 and build team spirit while most of us return to the office!

If you’re keen on participating, sign up your corporation for the GOQii Corporate Challenge to take advantage of exciting rewards – the best one being good health!

Washing Hands Can Save Your Life and Here’s How!

washing handsThanks to the coronavirus pandemic, WHO deemed washing hands as one of the standard precautionary steps! While we are still quite far away from the pandemic ending, have you ever wondered how washing hands can help curb the spread of the virus or any infection?

Fact: Washing hands can prevent about 30% of diarrhoea-related sicknesses and about 20% of respiratory infections?

So how does this work? How does something so simple help save so many lives?

The Science Behind Washing Hands

Washing hands definitely plays a key role in the battle against COVID-19. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean water. If one does not wash hands properly, the germs get onto hands and may spread while shaking hands, touching other objects, sneezing and coughing. Washing your hands properly reduces these risks and stops viruses such as the coronavirus from spreading.

According to Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), Washing Hands prevents from infection because:

  • People frequently touch their eyes, nose, and mouth without even realizing it. Germs can get into the body through the eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Germs from unwashed hands can get into foods and drinks while people prepare or consume them. Germs can multiply in some types of foods or drinks, under certain conditions, and make people sick.
  • Germs from unwashed hands can be transferred to other objects like handrails, table tops, or toys, and then transferred to another person’s hands.

How to Wash Your Hands?

Washing hands is a day to day task, but if done with ideal steps, it can surely make a positive difference. CDC (Centre for Disease Control), an international organisation, recommends cleaning hands in a specific way to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.

Follow these steps:

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

WHO recommends that “If your hands are not visibly dirty, frequently clean them by using alcohol- based hand rub or soap and water.” CDC recommends washing hands with water and soap but in case water and soap is not available, only then a hand sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol can be preferred to wash/clean hands.

This is because:

  • Sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of microbes but they DO NOT ELIMINATE all types of germs.
  • Hand sanitizers are not recommended when you get your hands greasy or visibly dirty.
  • Hand sanitizers might not remove harmful chemicals, like pesticides and heavy metals, from hands.

Click here for the right way to use a hand sanitizer: https://goqii.com/blog/the-correct-way-to-use-hand-sanitizer-to-kill-99-9-germs/

When Do You Wash Your Hands?

According to WHO, Wash your hands:

  • After coughing or sneezing
  • When taking care of a person who is ill
  • Before, during and after preparing food
  • Before entering your home
  • Before eating your meals
  • After using the toilet
  • When hands are visibly dirty
  • After handling animals or animal waste
  • Before and after using gloves

Washing your hands is an easy, cheap, and effective way to prevent the spread of germs and keep kids and adults safe from the virus and various diseases. Let’s spread awareness among our kids by demonstrating the correct technique of washing hands, by making this a regular part of their routine with their eating habits, giving frequent reminders to each other and carrying sanitizers in the community areas.

Fatty Liver Disease: What To Eat & What To Avoid

fatty liver disease

Our bodies have a tendency to store extra calories in terms of fat in each and every area to utilise it later for energy, or as a cushion for organs and insulation. The liver being the largest organ in the body, is partially made up of fat. However, if too much fat accumulates around the liver, it leads to Fatty Liver Disease.

Fatty liver disease is mainly associated with the excess usage of alcohol and is termed as Alcoholic Fatty Liver. However, those who do not drink alcohol at all, can also develop this condition over time and is known as Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver. Excess fat around the liver damages it and makes it difficult for the liver to remove toxins and produce bile for the digestive system.

The major plan of treatment for Fatty Liver Disease is dietary modifications and regular exercises. If the grade is too high, then one may need to see a doctor. For initial stages, the situation can be reversed completely with a few lifestyle modifications.

What Causes Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)?

  • Obesity: Overeating can cause weight gain which produces a load on the digestive system and the body forces the storage of extra calories in terms of fat, leading to NAFLD.
  • Pre-Diabetes: People with Insulin sensitivity or insulin resistance tend to store more fat in the liver as compared to non diabetics.
  • Over consumption of carbs and simple sugars: is linked with NAFLD as our body utilizes only what is required and rest is going to be stored as fat.
  • Poor Gut Health and genetics are also seen as linked with NAFLD.

Since it is a lifestyle disorder, modifying lifestyle with the right diet helps in controlling, maintaining and reversing both Alcoholic and Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

The diet should include:

  • Lots of fruits and vegetables
  • Reduced processed and packaged food with high salt and sugar
  • High fibre foods and less carbs
  • Whole grains like oats, quinoa, barley and millets
  • Nuts and seeds especially walnuts and flaxseeds as they are high in Omega 3
  • Vitamin E from Sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, olive oil or canola oil
  • Avocados as they are a good source of fat and fiber
  • Legumes

What Should You Avoid?

If you’re suffering from this disease, here is a list of foods you should avoid completely.

  •  Alcohol: As it is completely oxidised by the liver, there is no enzyme present in the body that can digest alcohol.
  • Added or simple sugars like candy, cookies, sodas, and fruit juices. It increases sugar level which increases fat build up.
  • Fried & oily foods due to excess calories and fat.
  • Too much salt makes the body hold on to excess water and can be a reason to gain weight.
  • Simple processed carbs like white bread, rice, and pasta, as they lack fibre and increase blood sugar.
  • Red meat like Beef and mutton are high in saturated fat.

Other Lifestyle Modifications

  • Shed the extra weight
  • Control sugar levels well
  • Include Cardio and strength training consisting of 30 mins for 5 days a week
  • Lower down cholesterol especially triglycerides.

We hope these tips help you manage Fatty Liver Disease with ease. Before you begin with any of the foods listed above, do consult your doctor, dietitian or nutritionist.
