6 Magical Herbs That Can Help You Sleep

6 Magical Herbs To Help You Sleep There are many people who face severe issues of sleep disorder and it is difficult for them to fall asleep. Sleep is a key component of good health. They say humans need at least 8 hours of sleep a night to rejuvenate and restore their bodies. Unfortunately, in the days of stress, chaos, constant electronic bombardment, adrenal fatigue, and hormonal craziness, we are seeing people generally getting less sleep, and the sleep they do get, tends to be interrupted in some way. This means the sleep quality and quantity have a lot to be desired. Thankfully, we have these 6 magical herbs which can help you relax, rejuvenate, and come to a quiet place of rest and relaxation.

6 Magical Herbs To Help You Sleep

1. Ashwagandha (Winter Cherry)

It is an adaptogen with strong affinities towards the nervous system. It helps the body deal with stress and hormone fluctuations caused by stress, especially helping regulate cortisol levels at night time. Cortisol is what wakes you up at 2 am thinking about a million things at once and not being able to fall back asleep. Taking 500mg of Ashwagandha daily can help your body even out stress hormone levels which can help you get a good night sleep. It has also been shown to ease anxiety and depression.

2. Chamomile

It is a wonderful calming herb. It relaxes both the body (muscles) and the mind. It is also a wonderful, gentle sedative. It is safe and effective for children. Chamomile tea sipped by a breastfeeding mother can soothe the baby after breastfeeding. Toddlers can sip chamomile tea with a little bit of honey before bedtime to calm them down. Adults can drink 1-2 cups of chamomile tea at the end of the day to help calm down before bedtime. Steep chamomile in hot water for 10 minutes in a tightly capped jar, strain and enjoy.

Chamomile oil can also be put in bath water (5-6 drops) to soothe overwrought nerves, diluted to 2% to make an excellent massage oil, or used as an inhalant.

Dose: Tea, 1 cup 2-3x daily; Tincture, 30 drops 3 x daily.

3. Lavender

Everyone knows that Lavender is great for relaxing and calming the mind and body. The essential oil can be diffused in the evenings alone or combined with other relaxing essential oils to bring on a state of peace and relaxation. The leaves can be drunk as a tea, or added to food. It is great for insomnia, agitation and restlessness. Lavender is a gentle strengthening tonic for the nervous system as well. A few drops of lavender oil added to a bath before bedtime are recommended for persons with sleep disorders. Additionally, the oil may be used as a compressor massage oil or simply inhaled to alleviate insomnia.

Dose: Tea, 1 cup 2-3 x daily; Essential oil may be inhaled, massaged into the skin (use 10 drops essential oil per ounce of vegetable oil), or added to baths (3-10 drops).

4. Passionflower

It’s a great herb for people who wake frequently throughout the night. It is a safe herb for most (excluding excessive use in pregnancy, especially in the first trimester), including children and can be taken in large doses frequently. It is used to promote a deep restful sleep and ease anxiety. Take 30-60 drops of passionflower tincture an hour before hitting the bed, and again at bedtime if you are not yet tired. The herb can be combined with others to make a wonderful night time tea as well. Passionflower is used for minor sleep problems in both children and adults (Bruneton, 1995). It is an excellent sedative with no side effects even when used in large doses (Spaick, 1978).

Dose: Tea, 1 cup 3x daily; Tincture, 30-60 drops 3-4x daily.

5. Lemon balm

It is used primarily to lift the mood and promote calmness and relaxation. Since depression is often related to insomnia, probably because of a lack of serotonin, lemon balm can help you achieve sleep by promoting mental and physical health. Several studies have confirmed its sedative effects, however, it should be noted that too high of a dosage (1800 milligrams) increases anxiety.

To make it into a mild, uplifting, and relaxing tea. You will need:

  • 2 tablespoons of dried lemon balm, or 8-10 tablespoons of fresh lemon balm
  • 2 teaspoons dried chamomile
  • Honey to taste (optional)
  • 8 ounces of fresh water

Directions: Place the loose herbs in a mug and cover with 8 ounces of boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes, strain, and drink 30-45 minutes before bed.

6. California Poppy

This is a great herb for insomnia due to restlessness and anxiety (and it’s safe and gentle enough for children). This herb not only helps you to fall asleep, it improves the quality of your sleep as well. A tincture is the most powerful way to take this. Try 30-40 drops twice daily (the second dose close to bedtime).

These herbs can be combined to make a lovely relaxing night time tea that works for your specific needs. That is the great thing about herbs, some speak to you more than others. Those are typically the herbs that you should do some more work with to see if they suit you!

Before you try any of these herbs, have a word with your doctor, dietitian or nutritionist. You can also speak to our Coaches and Experts by subscribing for GOQii’s Personalised Health Coaching here.

6 Lifestyle Changes For Acne-Free Skin

acne-free skinWe all yearn for clear, glowing, blemish-free skin! There’s no denying that smooth skin has mass appeal. If smooth skin were the protagonist of your story, acne would certainly be the formidable foe!

Acne is basically a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes spots and pimples. It can lead to redness and dull skin. Risk factors include genetics, menstrual cycle, stress, anxiety, humid climate, using oil-based makeup, out of home foods, etc.

Once developed, acne requires a lot of patience to fade away. Hence, you need to be religious towards the efforts.

Make smooth skin a reality with these 5 lifestyle changes which can help you reduce or prevent acne!

No Refined Carbs & Sugar

Bid alcohol, soft drinks, desserts, bread, ice-cream, sugar, maida, etc. a good farewell! As they have a high glycemic index, it can lead to high blood sugar and high insulin levels. This might result in inflammation, which is one of the prime causes of acne. High sugar intake along with acne can lead to dark circles, loose skin, and wrinkles, etc. So go low on sugar.

Drink More Water

Skin cells require water to function properly. According to research, acne is more likely to develop when your system has more toxins. Water helps flush these toxins out. Though water is not a miracle cure but it definitely helps in fighting acne.

Physical Activity

Exercise boosts blood circulation and promotes sweating, which helps the body push impurities out of the pores, reducing acne. Physical activity helps us reduce stress levels, which inturn aids acne prevention. Just make sure you clean up before and after a workout.

Get Quality Sleep

Do you wake up fresh and energetic in the morning? If you don’t get good, restorative sleep, your body might not feel rested. This could start the cortisol surge, which can put you at risk for more acne. Make sleep your priority and give your body the rest it needs and your acne a chance to heal.

Eat Your Colors

Yes! Eat all the colourful fruits and vegetables. They help us improve vitamin levels and antioxidant intake which keeps the skin clear. Eat dark leafy greens, pumpkin, carrots, beetroot, berries, papaya, etc. on a daily basis.

Eat Healthy Fats

Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are required to keep your skin healthy. They help prevent skin dryness and help you maintain healthy and hydrated skin. Healthy fats are the building blocks of cell membranes. Hence, add walnuts, fish oil, flax seeds, avocado, sunflower seeds, etc. to your diet.

Some handy tips for good skin:

  • Wash your hands once you wake up before touching the face
  • Use fresh towels and handkerchiefs daily
  • Always remove your makeup completely
  • Clean your phone on a regular basis
  • Do not sleep without washing your face

Add Magic To Your Life With This Simple Technique

Positive Affirmations

More than often, we get disheartened if we are not able to achieve our goal well on time or if we face obstacles in achieving it. It’s not just related to our health journey but the journey of life as well. We face so many challenges on a daily basis. While some face them bravely by being positive and firm, others get discouraged or depressed for not being able to face failures. The way we deal with issues is different for each individual and that is okay!

Life is not about going through it passively, it’s about living it actively. Yes! Living life to the fullest. Joy comes from facing challenges head on, setting goals and giving it a 100% to achieve them with full zeal and spirit.

But how can we do it? That’s the big question with a very simple solution.

VISUALIZE
Yes, we need to understand that visualization is powerful enough to solve any problems that we face. Many of us don’t even realize that this power lies within us, all we need to do is use it.

We know that our body and mind are connected and our emotions are linked with our actions, right? For instance, if we are sad/depressed due to any reason, it reflects in our behavior. If we get irritated or angry/frustrated, the turmoil of emotions affects our health negatively.

HOW CAN WE WORK ON IT?
It’s simple! Just concentrate on your thoughts. What kind of thoughts are wandering in your mind? These thoughts have an impact on your feelings, emotions and actions. Trust me, if we are aware of the thoughts creeping in our mind, we have the power to change that thought, at that very moment. Don’t let the bad or negative thoughts enter your mind or affect you. There are thousands of thoughts in our mind. So, how many of them are we going to stick to or store, so that they can bother us? Make sure its none of the negative ones.

Hence, VISUALIZE, BE AWARE, KEEP NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AT BAY, GO EASY AND CHANGE YOUR THOUGHT TO A POSITIVE ONE!

  • Just close your eyes and visualize. For instance, if someone has a health goal of losing weight, but due to some reason, the player is not able to achieve it or is not getting the desired result in the stipulated time, the player might have some negative thoughts. The player may feel that ‘this goal cannot be achieved’ or ‘I can’t do it’. At this very moment, the player can stop this negative thought from entering his/her mind and instead visualize the positive, coming out of any fear that affects his/her mind.
  • Wake up every day with a positive mind and visualize. Visualize the day, how you are going to achieve your goal, what’s your target for the day and strive to fulfill that.
  • Never give up! It’s okay if you can’t achieve your target today, try again tomorrow.
  • If losing weight is the target, visualize that the habit, diet or exercise regime you are following is working for you and getting you closer to your goal. If any medical condition, then envisage that the treatment or the medication is working for you and improving your health.

Hence, it’s not only the physical aspect that we need to work on but the mind as well. Detoxifying our mind is equally important as detoxifying our body.

MAKE POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS

  • This has to be done every single day – Morning and night. Morning, you make an affirmation and visualize how you’re going to work on it. At night, introspect on how it all went and how the day was, just for a few minutes.
  • As soon as you wake up, make an affirmation with closed eyes. Spend a few minutes with yourself every morning and night.
  • Set it for a shorter duration or you can even set it for a week so that you can stick to it. Affirmations could be as simple as, “I will follow all my habits today”, or “I will be active today”, or “I will not get angry today”.
  • The key is to be committed and dedicated.

Once you start this process, you will see how your life changes positively. So go ahead and make one right now!

Understanding Health and Fitness

We often speak and hear about health and fitness. In recent times, both these words have become a part of people’s daily lingo. How many of us actually know the meaning of these words? Is it just a fad to talk about health and fitness?

Truth be told, health and fitness have totally different meanings and concepts. Let us try to understand the terms ‘Health and Fitness’.

What is Health?

Health refers to the absence of disease. It indicates that all the systems in the body, be it the Central Nerves System, Cardiovascular System, Respiratory System or any other systems are working perfectly and together. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

What is Fitness?

Fitness refers to the degree of body functioning and ability of the body to handle physical demands. If the body is functioning more effectively and efficiently, it indicates greater or higher level of fitness. Any physical activity strenuous or non-strenuous requires one to have some basic fitness. Climbing stairs also requires a certain level of fitness.

Involving yourself in physical activities can bring about some basic level of fitness. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by the skeletal muscles that required energy expenditures. Physical exercise is as important as food and sleep.

When we don’t use the organs of our body, our body responds by saying, “Use it or lose it”. Leading a sedentary lifestyle leads to hypokinetic complications. Proper and regular exercise result in amazing physical, mental and emotional benefits.

To take up any physical activity, you need to set a goal as per your requirement and the way your body responds. Ensure that you are not just focusing on fitness but on the health aspect as well before setting a goal.
