5 Reasons Why You Need to Begin Weight Training Now!

weight training

We all want that lean body, six-packs and look absolutely stunning all the time. But, the one thing that always gets in the way is excess fat! It never leaves us, clinging on to the body like moss on stone. The funny part is that no matter how much you sweat on cardio, it doesn’t seem to help. Before you begin thinking there is no absolute solution, let me ask you if you’ve heard of weight training?

Before I get to telling you how weight training helps, let’s clear some misconceptions. It is a myth that weight training only bulks you up. People believe that one becomes heavy and bulky, especially women but that’s not true. Don’t worry, it won’t turn you into the Hulk. Secondly, for weight loss people often turn to cardio while neglecting weight training but that’s not the right route to go. Want to know why?

5 Benefits of Weight Training

  1. It Makes You Burn Fat: When you lift weights, you will be building muscles. Muscles require less space than fat. A person with more muscles may weigh the same as that of a person with more fat but the muscular person will definitely look much skinnier and toned.
  2. Protection From Injuries: Weight lifting makes the skeletal system strong. Not only bones, but muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissues as well. Strengthening these helps in preventing injuries and also reduces the risk for osteoporosis as it strengthens the bones too!
  3. Major Boost to Self-Confidence: Lifting weights improves overall physique of both men and women by building more lean muscle. It improves one’s body image. Imagine seeing a leaner and toned you in the mirror. Wouldn’t that boost your self-confidence? This in essence means you will have more energy, less stress, anxiety and depression. Indirectly, it is a good way to boost your mental health as well.
  4. Fights Insomnia: Weight training is exhausting! Once you’re done, you’ll sleep like a baby. If one is suffering from insomnia or finding it difficult to fall asleep, then weight training is the way to go! Cardio or any exercise helps but lifting weights is like a cherry on the cake. Just get up and hit the gym!
  5. Improves Flexibility, Stability and Balance: Lifting weights improves joint mobility through a full range of motion. It makes your joints flexible and strong. This in turn improves posture and provides the necessary stamina to perform basic activities such as walking, running and even performing other exercises and tasks including cardiovascular exercises.

You don’t even need a gym. You can literally lift weights at home too. If you haven’t thought of beginning your weight training journey, start now and get ready to see some positive change. To get a head start, join some online classes on GOQii Pro within the GOQii App and get the right guidance and motivation from certified experts in real time.

We hope this article motivates you to begin your weight training journey today. For more on Fitness, check out Healthy Reads. Do leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Losing 14kg In 13 Months – How Reshmi Sujesh Wrote Her Healthy Story!

Reshmi Sujesh

Have you tried shedding off extra weight but haven’t been successful? Do you feel that no amount of exercise or diet plans can help you? When it comes to weight loss, there’s always more than one or two factors involved. Our Player Reshmi Sujesh was in a similar predicament where she couldn’t lose weight, till she opted for GOQii’s personalized health coaching.

Life Before GOQii

Reshmi Sujesh is a 43 year old working professional based in Bengaluru. She had first joined GOQii in 2017 and had tried the personalized health coaching service for 3 months but chose to discontinue as she found it too intrusive.

2 years later, she got extremely busy with her professional life and had gained a considerable amount of weight. She did try walking regularly along with exercise but she struggled to lose weight.

In November 2020, she received a parcel that came for her husband. The parcel contained a GOQii tracker along with the GOQii Balance Body Composition Monitor. When she weighed herself, she was horrified at the number displayed on the screen. She weighed around 84.5kg. That was her wake up call and she decided to get healthy!

Making Lifestyle Changes

She informed her husband that she was taking the GOQii tracker and she began her health journey. This time, she opted for personalized health coaching and set her goal to weight loss. Her BMI at this point was around 31.

After speaking to her GOQii Coach, she slowly began dietary changes which included drinking overnight soaked methi dana water on an empty stomach in the morning. Methi dana or Fenugreek promotes weight loss by burning stubborn fat from the belly and adipose tissues. Fenugreek is filled with fiber and antioxidants, and as a result, it also flushes out harmful toxins.

She initially began walking 5k steps daily and gradually moved to 7k and 10k. Over time, more dietary changes were included. She was persistent and tried her best to follow all the habits set by her GOQii Coach. She also kept track of her diet by logging in her food and water intake in the GOQii App.

Her current routine includes 30 minutes of walking. Her step counts now touch an average of 12k steps per day. She also performs 15 minutes of Surya Namaskar along with core exercises. Thanks to all these lifestyle changes, she was able to lose 14kg in 13 months.

She recently spoke to our Founder & CEO Vishal Gondal about her Health Story and how hard she worked to lose weight in a healthy way. You can watch the entire episode of GOQii Health Stories feat. Reshmi Sujesh here –

What Does Coach Ankita Baheti Have To Say About Reshmi Sujesh’s Transformation?

“My player Reshmi Sujesh stands tall at 154 cm, weighs 70kg and is 43 years old. Her current BMI IS 29.9. She was transferred to me from another GOQii Coach. When I started coaching her in July, she weighed 74.70kg & her BMI was 31.5.

Her health goals were weight management, improving strength and eating healthy. She is persistent and tries her best to follow all the habits daily and also provides updates for the food logs. It was very challenging for her to reduce weight due to her sedentary lifestyle and medical conditions. But, thanks to her dedication and regularity towards her health goals, she achieved what she aimed for!”

It’s never easy when you have to achieve a health goal. There are lots of sacrifices you need to make. But if you are determined and persistent, then success is not far away. Reshmi Sujesh exemplifies this fact. Her current health goal is to reduce another 10kg.

Losing 12kg & Overcoming A Sedentary Lifestyle – J Ravichandran Writes His Health Story!

J Ravichandran

Does being sedentary after retirement sound familiar to you? Could be you, a loved one or someone you know. J Ravichandran, a 63 year old retired CA from Chennai, experienced the same. As a CA, his work involved a lot of traveling – which kept him active. While he did not have any major illnesses, he was on the heavier side, having reached a stage of being overweight.

“I have always been on the heavier side. My parents have also been on the heavy side. But, after retirement I started gaining more weight,” says Ravichandran. His weight reached 86kg in June 2020 at 5.3 inches of height. Apart from gaining weight, he also developed other health issues such as aches and pains.

While things seemed grim, J Ravichandran was able to turn his life around. How? Let’s find out!

Life Before GOQii

Retirement and a sedentary lifestyle went hand in hand for J Ravichandran. Furthermore, with the COVID-19 Lockdown in March 2020, he was unable to go out, which meant that he had stopped walking. He put on more weight during this time. He also suffered from constipation and arthritis.

He had no control on his eating habits, he used to drink socially and as a result of being sedentary, he suffered from improper and poor quality sleep.

Getting Onboard The GOQii Ecosystem

His main goal was to lose weight and he also wanted to manage his indigestion problem, arthritis pain and constipation. He had problems while walking due to being overweight. He even had problems sitting and getting up. That’s when he decided something needs to be done or else living like this would get quite difficult for him.

He joined a local gym but that didn’t help him much. He tried walking inside the confines of his home but again, it did not give him any result. Then, the lockdown hit and everything stopped. All this collectively took a toll on him.

In July 2020, he came across GOQii and its fitness tracker from one of his friends and without much thought, he purchased it. He got a 3 month personal health coaching subscription free with his device. He wanted a coach who could understand the South Indian diet and he was assigned to coach Jannath. He was able to build a very good rapport with the coach as they shared the same regional language.

Initially, he thought that the coach would help only with his diet but he was quite impressed with the holistic approach that entailed diet, workout, stress and sleep management. He followed all the changes that the coach brought in for his betterment.

These changes included:

  • Morning start with detox water
  • Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Consuming Methi seeds soaked in water as well as lime water
  • Introduction of mid meal snacks
  • Portion control

His GOQii Coach also suggested intermittent fasting.

When he started in July 2020, he was 84.8kg and by October 2021, he had lost 12kg. Since then, his weight has remained at 73. He has reduced inches on his waist as well.

J Ravichandran has been regularly updating his logs on the app and keeps his coach informed. He credits changes in his lifestyle to GOQii and his GOQii Coach. He regularly completes 10K steps and thanks to being active, with weight reduction, his knee pain has also reduced.

Overall Benefits

“I am now more disciplined and log all details everyday. These logs are continuously monitored and I get regular feedback from the coach. That helps as it gives you an idea of where you stand in terms of your health,” says Ravichandran. Ravinchaindran has now introduced his wife to GOQii as well.

“Consistency is key to good health”, Ravichandran concludes.

What Does Coach Jannath Have To Say About J Ravichandran?

Mr. J Ravichandran came on board in July 2020. When he joined GOQii he was 84.8kg and he had constipation and arthritis too. He also had sleep disturbance to some extent.

From the first intro call itself, Ravichandran was eagerly waiting to start his journey. This made my work a little easier. After understating his lifestyle, I made some healthy changes like introducing detox water, salads and fruits in his diet along with some knee workouts for arthritis.

When I made these changes in his diet and workout, he was able to manage his constipation and digestion problems too. He also was able to manage his knee pain with exercise.

I got Mr. J Ravichandran started with intermittent fasting twice weekly, and it worked very well. He reached 81.1kg on September 1, 2020. Slowly, we introduced breathing exercises and other techniques to improve his sleep quality. It definitely worked well with his sleep quality improving by 70 to 80%.

I made a few healthy changes in his diet as per his food logs in the app. Finally, he reached 72.5kg in the month of October 2021. In total, he lost 12.5kg in one year. Mr. J Ravichandran’s journey proves that small changes in lifestyle can yield the best results!

The Difference Between Keto, Paleo and Atkins

keto, atkins and paleo

With fad diets running around in full swing, you’re bound to wonder what they are about. To give you a quick gist, Keto, Atkins and Paleo are all low carbohydrate diets that serve different purposes. To understand the difference between them, let’s delve into details first!

1. Ketogenic or Keto Diet

This diet was created in the 1920s as a mode of treating epilepsy. The classic Keto diet requires 90% of the calories coming from fat, 6% from proteins and 4% from carbohydrates. The purpose of this diet is to force the body to go into ketosis, which is a metabolic state that utilizes fat for energy instead of glucose (i.e. from Carbs).

Although the diet is low-carb, its main focus is to be high in fat with some protein. There are no restrictions on the type of fat to be consumed.  So followers can have bacon, avocados, butter, etc.

Pros:

  • High-fat and high-protein foods keep you fuller for longer.
  • You can eat up to four ounces of cheese (For some of us, that’s key).
  • Protein is more limited than on Atkins, so your liver will not end up processing it.
  • Your cholesterol is going to get better as the good cholesterol will go up and the bad triglycerides will go down.
  • It can also help lower blood pressure.
  • The keto diet has been shown, in some studies, to improve the health of women with PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome), reduce cholesterol, decrease seizures in epileptic children, and improve acne.

Cons:

  • Have you heard of the Keto flu? When you start the diet, you may begin feeling grumpy and foggy while your body and brain adjust to using ketones instead of glucose for fuel. The Keto flu can last from 2 days to 2 weeks.
  • You cannot eat any fruit.
  • As the fiber content in the diet is low, it can cause issues such as constipation.
  • You need to be careful about dehydration.
  • You need to get ketone urine testing strips to confirm you’re in ketosis at regular intervals.
  • If you are accustomed to a high-fiber diet, you might need a supplement.
  • If you are on medication for hypertension, diabetes, or other conditions, you must talk to a doctor before starting the diet.

2. Atkins Diet

This diet is specifically labelled as a low-carb diet. There are 2 versions of Atkins diet: Atkin 20 which is the original diet and Atkin 40, which is a diet created for those looking to lose less than 40 pounds (approx. 18 kg).

The Classic Atkins diet has 4 phases: The 1st phase starts off with having 20-25gms of carbs per day and then slowly progresses to phase 4 in which people are allowed 80-100gms of carbs, which is still considered low-carb.

Atkins focuses on net carb intake. Instead of counting all carbs as the same, this diet takes fiber and sugars into account, whereas Paleo and Keto don’t. So if a food has 10gms of carbs, but 3gms of fiber, and 1gm of sugar, than your net carb intake would be 6gms.

Pros:

  • You won’t be hungry. You will feel satisfied.
  • Weight comes off quickly, although some of it will be water weight.
  • The four phases allow you to slowly add some carbs back in, making it somewhat easier to sustain.
  • Atkins has a line of snack bars, shakes, and frozen meals, which make compliance convenient.
  • There is evidence that the diet helps improve both cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Cons:

  • Your initial dramatic weight loss is a whole lot of water — you won’t keep losing at the same level and the minute you eat carbs again it will come back on.
  • You eat too much protein, which can cause serious liver issues.
  • This can also prevent you from going into ketosis, which means you won’t lose weight.
  • Eating barely any carbs can, at first, make you feel cranky, lethargic, and even achy — mainly because your brain takes time to adjust from processing glucose to ketones.
  • Being in a state of ketosis causes stinky breath — and since bad breath doesn’t come from your mouth, brushing isn’t going to help.
  • The Atkins line of foods and snacks often contain artificial sweeteners and other processed ingredients.

3. Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet follows the eating pattern followed during the Paleolithic era, 2.6 million years ago, which is basically eating like a hunter- gatherer. It focuses mostly on a high-protein diet with lots of vegetables and fruit. Unlike Keto and Atkins, this diet doesn’t aim to be low-carb. It cuts down the intake of carbs from grains, dairy, legumes, refined and processed foods.

While keto diet doesn’t discriminate between the types of fats that needs to be included, the Paleo diet advises its followers to avoid certain types of oils and trans-fats. Although you can eat all the peanut butter you want to on a keto diet, the paleo diet cuts out the peanut butter because technically peanuts are classified under legumes.

Pros:

  • The focus of Paleo is on whole, nutrient-dense foods.
  • You can have proteins, fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats (like those from avocado, nuts, and seeds).
  • Low-glycemic diets have been shown to lower blood sugar and cholesterol and reduce visceral fat.
  • You don’t have to give up sweets, as long as they are natural (honey, maple syrup, etc.).
  • People with gut issues may find eliminating wheat, dairy, and processed foods also eliminates digestive discomfort.
  • It is higher in fiber and other nutrients than Atkins and Keto.

Cons:

  • The diet is restrictive and difficult to implement.
  • Be prepared to shop and cook for every meal, because it’s challenging to eat out on Paleo.
  • This diet might burn a hole in your pockets as grass-fed meats, free-range poultry and organic produce are expensive.
  • Without dairy, you may need to increase your efforts to consume enough calcium.
  • Weight loss, if any, may be more gradual than on the other diets.

While GOQii does not advocate, promote or instruct its players to follow fad diets, if you’re still adamant on choosing any one of these, you may want to consult your GOQii Coach within the app, nutritionist or dietician before proceeding as the same diet doesn’t work for everyone. You might even want to check with your doctor in case you have food allergies.
