Sleep Series: Sound NOT OK Please! Everything You Need To Know About Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea

Good sleep is ironically referred to as Sound Sleep. While “sound sleep” is Ok, sleep with “Sound NOT OK please!” Snoring is the “Lead Indicator” for sleep apnea. 30% of Males and 15% of females snore. Most of the male snorers beyond age 40 have a high chance of Sleep Apnea.

During sleep, the body parts relax and for few of us, the muscles around the air passage – throat and tongue – collapses (relaxes) and obstructs the airway. This:

  • Stops flow of air to lungs
  • Breathing stops
  • Oxygen level in the blood goes down – less than 90%, Co2 rises
  • Brain detects the low level and URGENTLY REACTS!

The brain sends signals to wake up, but to the collapsed parts only (normally the person still continues to sleep – hence he just does not know the issue) and then the cycle continues.

During Apnea, there are complex harmful hormonal reactions in the body: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/media/releases/more_evidence_untreated_sleep_apnea_shown_to_raise_metabolic_and_cardiovascular_stress

Sleep Apnea kills slowly! Sleep Apnea unleashes Diabetes and Hypertension and lethargy of course, among a myriad of other diseases. I first noticed that I may have apnea since I felt very sleepy in office meetings. That they were boring is another reason, but I felt sleepy in ALL meetings! I was tired and lethargic.

How I Tackled Sleep Apnea

My “sound sleep” was like a Lion’s Roar! I heard my recordings – first it was my wife who talked about it, then even my sons, who sleep in the adjacent room. That’s the time, coincidentally, GOQii folks were discussing sleep apnea, CPAP machines, etc. There was a free polysomnography (sleep test) going on offer and I grabbed one. The results confirmed a mild version of apnea and I promptly purchased a Philips APAP (more advanced than CPAP) machine.

I struggled to get used to sleeping with a face mask but as I got used, the benefits were telling! I invariably woke up fresher, singing a song and ready to Carpe Diem. I was more attentive in meetings (asking even tougher questions) and then the health benefits began pouring in – my hypertension plummeted, and the quantum of medicines dropped – my overall quality of life improved

The reason why I shared my personal story bit more elaborately:
I had a sleep problem that resulted in

  • Low productivity
  • Stress and strain as I worked hard to compensate for the low productivity
  • Irritability due to poor sleep – bad 360 degree feedback
  • I was taking more coffee to stay awake – resulting in further loss of sleep – caught in a vicious cycle (read caffeine and sleep here)
  • Suffered from an avoidable hypertension issue for at least 15 years and took all kinds of beta blockers resulting in even deadlier side effects
  • I HAD NO CLUE and sadly NOT EVEN MY DOCTORS
  • NO doctor EVER asked me ANY questions about my snoring or sleep quality – NOT a comment on the Doctors, but on the system, treat for the “symptoms” that we narrate.

Therefore, YOU ARE ACCOUNTABLE for your HEALTH!

  • Talk to your body, understand the signals (language of body) it is sending – even better, measure it regularly
  • In Mumbai, I found just two sleep doctors on Google – I consulted with one of them.  (Just 2 for Maximum City? No wonder Mumbai is a city that does not sleep)
  • I read Matthew Walker’s book on Sleep, read many blogs and watched many Videos
  • Used CPAP Machine, understood its readings, correlated with GOQii Smart Vital readings and made corrections to lifestyle
  • Invested in upgrading my bedroom
  • Experimented with a few foods (next/last blog) and adapted what was suiting me
  • Then, finally decided to share it on LinkedIn, because that is my community

Summary

  • Sleep Apnea is MORE common than what gets detected and treated
  • Sleep Apnea is not just a health problem, it is the biggest killer of productivity – HR Folks, note this!
  • Low productivity results in even more hard work for knowledge workers
  • Responsible for ALL MAJOR lifestyle chronic illnesses like Diabetes and Hypertension
  • If you feel sleepy in the office before lunch, then watch out, you may have sleep apnea whether or not you snore ( feeling a bit sleepy during the second half is ok)
  • If you are over 40, then I strongly advise you to consult a sleep doctor and take a polysomnography test. Make it part of the Master Check Up
  • If you snore, then do not wait, get yourself tested for apnea

Modern CPAP and APAP machines are fantastic. They are as comfortable as they can get and they give you a comprehensive MIS on your sleep the next day. More importantly, they have high quality air filters, which filters pollutants and smaller dust particles – that’s an added benefit!

We hope this article on Sleep Apnea helps you! Watch out for the next and final article on the Sleep Series by Srini. For more on sleep, tune in to LIVE sessions by experts on GOQii Play.

Small Changes For Big Rewards – Officer Susant Dash User Journey

Susant DashIt’s no surprise that the heavy burden of managing this COVID-19 crisis has fallen heavily on our frontline heroes. The members of our police force have faced the worst of it. During this time, it is very important to keep oneself healthy in order to protect others. While this is expected, it is no easy task. Managing health, along with duty, was becoming increasingly difficult for Police Officer Susant Dash.

As an officer of the police force, his days were always hectic with no timely meals or sleep. He used to eat his lunch at 4pm and dinner around 12:30 or 1am after returning home. He had no control over what he would eat in between his meals – as it mostly consisted of a samosa or some street food from a vendor. The high levels of stress during these precarious times only contributed to his weight gain. He didn’t even have time to think about health or fitness till he stumbled upon an advertisement of our brand ambassador Akshay Kumar on a newspaper which changed his life!

Making a Lifestyle Change

The advertisement that Susant Dash saw was that of the GOQii Smart Vital. Being out on the field all day during a pandemic, he figured he could use a device which helped him track vitals such as body temperature, blood oxygen, heart rate and blood pressure. He purchased the GOQii Smart Vital which came with a 3 month subscription to personal coaching. Once he subscribed, he was introduced to his Coach, Yogita Sharma and his journey to a healthier lifestyle began.

Habits Introduced By His Coach

The changes that Coach Yogita Sharma introduced were quite basic. This included maintaining a 3 hour gap between his dinner and sleep time, timely meals and no oily food. She gave him a fitness regime to follow for a week which included 4 days of cardio, 2 days of strength training and 1 day of rest.

Now, his day starts at 6 in the morning with a glass of lemon water or methi seeds soaked overnight with water. He starts his workout at 7 and goes on for an hour. He tries his best to eat his breakfast, lunch and dinner on time. He has completely stopped snacking from vendors – fried foods being a major weakness. Along with this, he does 10 minutes of guided meditation every day before sleeping.

What Changes Did Officer Susant Dash Notice?

Thanks to making these minimal changes to his lifestyle, his weight has reduced from 103kg in September 2020 to 87kg now. He feels more energetic and active despite being out all day. He understood from his coach that exercise alone does not lead to fat loss. It has to be coupled with calorie restriction, proper diet and sleep – something that he was unaware about before being coached by Yogita Sharma, who guided him about what to eat, what to avoid, and most importantly, how to structure his meals.

With visible changes in his physique and appearance, he says he has grown more confident and feels good when he is appreciated by his superiors and his juniors at the station. He feels pleased that he has become a role model for his colleagues and has inspired many among them to take fitness seriously. He says, “I never imagined I could lose 16 kgs in 5 months. Thanks to GOQii this came true!”

Apart from engaging with his GOQii Coach, Officer Susant Dash also follows GOQii Play Coaches Mukesh, Heena, Dr. Paramjeet and Urvashi and finds their videos interesting. He also purchases products such as honey, teas, etc. from the GOQii Health Store.

What Does Coach Yogita Sharma Have To Say About Officer Susant Dash?

Officer Susant Dash joined GOQii on 13th September, 2020. When he joined our team, his weight was 99kg and he struggled with borderline high sugar levels, uric acid and high blood pressure, but was not taking any medication for the same. After our first discussion, we decided that we will try lifestyle modifications to correct these parameters before starting medication.

Over a period of 4 months, he has lost 10kg of weight and as per his latest reports, his blood sugar, blood pressure and uric acid levels are all well within normal range. Overall, his energy levels have improved and he feels fresh throughout the day.

Chandan Tiwari Makes A Positive Lifestyle Shift!

chandan tiwari

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns and as you age those twists and turns keep getting narrower. But as long as you are determined to pull through, nothing can stop you. And sometimes all you need is a helping hand. The story of our player Chandan Tiwari is one such example.

Life Before GOQii

Now 28 years of age, Chandan Tiwari used to be quite active in sports during his youth. He represented his school and college in cricket. He was lean, fit and weighed 74kg. However, once he began working in 2016, his life got caught up in the twists and turns of a working individual and he found himself working for 14-15 hours a day backed by lack of sleep, unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity. In 3 years, he gained 22kg and also suffered bouts of depression with his confidence being at an all time low. He says he is not sure whether depression led to all the unhealthy eating and weight gain or was it the other way round. He faced frequent health issues like cold and fever, stomach issues and skin allergy. He was diagnosed with fatty liver too during one of the medical tests conducted in 2018.

Enter GOQii

Chandan was introduced to GOQii by his brother who is also an active user and had undergone a transformation due to lifestyle changes introduced by the coach. He joined GOQii in August 2019 and his life took another turn – this time for the better.

The first thing his GOQii Coach did was explain the importance of a slow and consistent approach to fat loss rather than changing his lifestyle completely. So he started slowly. The changes introduced by his coach included:

  • No outside food on weekdays
  • Lemon water early in the morning on an empty stomach’
  • ACV before lunch
  • 30 min of walking everyday
  • Reduce consumption of sweets

Later, his GOQii Coach also introduced habits such as:

  • Focusing on eating and chewing food slowly as he was used to finishing his meals quickly
  • Eating fruits and raw vegetables
  • Less oil in cooking and more boiled food
  • Start with a run for 1 or 2 km and then slowly increase it to 5 km

Chandan Tiwari Takes The Positive Turn!

In 2 months flat, Chandan was able to lose 10kg. This motivated him to be more dedicated. He says it was initially difficult to abstain from his normal eating habits as all the sweet cravings were hard to control but he pulled through. He proudly says he has not touched sweets in the last 5 months.

The other changes he experienced include:

  • 2-3 days of run and 3-4 days of bodyweight exercises at home by following YouTube or GOQii Play Coaches. The bodyweight training has helped him achieve lean muscle.
  • He participated in a 10k run last year and now wants to do a 21 km marathon.
  • His sleep has improved as he avoids late night TV or his phone. Goes to bed at 11PM as compared to 2-3AM before.
  • Has incorporated meditation and breathing exercises to his routine which keep him calm although work pressure has not reduced, he is able to manage his work and prioritize fitness.

Thanks to all these changes, he now weighs 74.5kg. His fatty liver condition is completely cured. His thyroid is under control although he is still on medication. Right now, he feels more positive, confident and energetic even after 11 hours of work. Apart from interacting with his coach on a regular basis, he has been regularly buying products from the GOQii Health Store.

In his words, he was almost obsessed with his transformation and wanted to get back in shape at any cost. He said, “It’s not just the physical transformation but my mental transformation which I am happy about. I now feel totally in control of myself and stronger to handle everything.” His family is overwhelmed with his transformation and wish to thank GOQii for their support and help.

Explore The Wonderful Health Benefits and Uses of Honey

honeyHoney is a food and medicine which is well-known for its antioxidant, antibacterial and soothing effects. People have used raw honey in traditional medicine for hundreds of years. This sweet, natural substance contains elements that processed honey does not have. Raw honey, which comes straight from the beehive, contains healthy bee pollen, bee propolis, and plenty of antioxidants. Due to processing and pasteurization, there is a loss of many beneficial elements. So, it is important to always choose raw honey instead of regular one for good health. Choosing raw or pure honey over refined sugar is a much healthier option for a diabetic person because it is a natural sweetener which is made with fructose and minerals.

Did You Know?

1 tablespoon (21g) of raw honey contains 64 calories and 16g of sugar with so many vitamins and minerals like calcium, zinc, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, niacin, riboflavin etc. Diabetic patients can also take it, but in lesser amounts and with a strict check on the blood sugar levels at all times.

Health Benefits of Honey

  4. Digestive Disorders: It contains several enzymes which help in improving digestion and treating digestive disorders like gastritis and GERD.  As we know it is an anti-inflammatory agent and prebiotic which is very effective in reducing diarrhoea, abdominal pain, burning in the lining of the stomach and promotes gut health.
  5. Anti-inflammatory: Due to the anti-inflammatory properties, it reduces inflammation including swelling and lowers irritation on the lining of the stomach and intestines. Honey is effective against IBS in the same way that it is against gastritis by triggering the immune cells into action to fight the infection.
  6. Boosts Immunity: It contains special protein like Apisai which helps in boosting immunity and it also stimulates the immune system to provide a stronger and faster response to the diseases and infections.
  7. Reduce Allergy Symptom: It contains pollen spores which are picked up by the bees from local plants. If these pollen spores introduce a small amount of allergen into our system. This helps to activate the immune system and over time, we can build up natural immunity against it.
  8. Cough and Cold Medicine: Cough and cold are very common among children, especially with change in season. It has antiviral and antibacterial properties that help in treating viral and bacterial infections and give relief from cold and cough, sore throat, runny nose and even mild fever. Using a combination of honey with cinnamon or honey with ginger is a well-known home remedy for hundreds of years.
  9. Energy and Memory Booster: It is an instant energy booster. If you need a quick energy boost before or after a workout, it will surely help you but make sure you have a healthy diet and get proper sleep. Regular consumption of honey helps in preventing cellular damage and loss within the brain as per Ayurveda.

Amazing Uses of Honey

  • Treating Cough: Mix 1 tsp of honey and 2 tsp of lemon juice. Swallow the mixture at once. You can have it 2-3 times in a day to alleviate coughing. Alternatively, you can also take 1 cup milk, ½ turmeric, ¼ tsp cinnamon, a pinch of black pepper and 2 tsp of Honey. Heat the milk and add turmeric and whisk it well. Then add honey and other ingredients and strain it. Have it twice daily till you get relief from cough.
  • Wound and Burn Treatment: Apply it directly to wound or to the dressing, cover with a bandage and change the dressing every 12 to 48 hrs ( Note: the darker the color, the stronger its antibacterial and antioxidant power but serious burns should be seen by a medical expert immediately).
  • Acid Reflux and Indigestion: Mix 2 tsp of honey and yogurt (small bowl) and have it with your meals. It helps in reducing acid reflux and indigestion.
  • Sunburn Remedy: Take 1 tsp honey, 1 tsp olive oil, ¼ lemon juice. Combine all ingredients and apply on sunburn skin, leave for 10 minutes before rinsing with water.
  • Glowing Skin: 1tsp honey, 1 tsp aloe vera gel. Mix both and gently rub on the face for 15 minutes and rinse with cold water.
  • Perfect Hair Conditioner: Take ½ cup of honey, ¼ cup of olive oil and slightly warm it. Apply on your hair and allow to soak in by wrapping the hair with a towel, then wash your hair with cool water.
  • Face Mask for Acne: Take 2 tsp of fresh milk, 2 tsp of honey, fresh juice of one lemon, one tsp of yoghurt and lukewarm water. Thoroughly mix all ingredients and apply on face, wait for a few minutes, so that it can get dry. After 10 minutes rinse off your face with lukewarm water. Use this mask 2-3 times in a week and need to prepare fresh every time.
  • Strengthen Weak Nails: Mix one tablespoon honey with ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar in some shallow dish. Soak your nails for 10 minutes once in a week to make your nails strong.

Precautions: Always take it in cold or lukewarm water, not with hot water, as the temperature degrades some of the beneficial properties. Children below 12 months should not be made to consume honey due to the fear of botulism poisoning. People suffering from pollen or bee allergy should not consume it.
