Here’s How The GOQii Vital ECG Saves Lives

GOQii Vital ECGDr. Arvind Sinha has been suffering from hypertension for the last 3 decades and has had cardiac problems for close to 2 decades now. He first developed cardiac problems when he was around 46-47 years of age due to a sedentary lifestyle. About 25 years back, he underwent a coronary bypass operation. Almost a year ago his son Dr. Chandan Sinha came across the GOQii Vital ECG band, he decided to get it for his father to keep a check on his ECG. 9 months later, Dr. Arvind Sinha, one afternoon, suddenly developed palpitations. This kind of palpitations was something he had never experienced in 3 years. He had an oximeter by his bedside and so he first checked his SpO2 levels. His SpO2 levels were normal and BP showed 148-88mmHg. But, the palpitations continued for a while. Then around half an hour later, he again felt uneasy which is when he decided to use the GOQii Vital ECG band and check his ECG. The time was around 5:30 pm. The ECG reading showed abnormal – Atrial Fibrillation. Dr. Sinha was having palpitations when he took the ECG. He took his ECG (on his own) and the device helped him to understand what was happening to him.

GOQii Vital ECGDr Chandan Sinha says, “We do have a proper ECG machine at home where we would take my father’s ECG readings. But, it would have taken a while before we took his ECG when he had palpitations. In such a scenario, the device is handy and it helped understand the abnormal situation immediately. What surprised us was we got a call from their Bangalore HQ and the person on the other side sounded concerned and was asking for the well-being of the patient. Moreover, he wanted us to connect to a doctor if required. Now, this is something which would help the elderly staying alone in smaller cities of India. I feel it’s a must have item for parents, not a normal fitness band but the perfect health tracker!” he adds.

1.53 mn deaths happen in India due to heart attacks every year

How often have we have heard of situations wherein a cardiac patient has felt uneasy due to a very high heart rate (upwards of 180 beats per minute), uneasiness in the chest, severe sweating, high BP and has been rushed to the hospital and the first thing that is done is to take an ECG. Imagine if the same can be taken immediately with a band on the wrist of the patient; it can save a life. The GOQii Vital ECG device, according to both Dr Arvind and Dr Chandan Sinha, is a good preventive device on the wrist that gives you an indication to take action immediately.

The likelihood of surviving a heart attack is over 80% if action is taken within  the first 2 hours

GOQii Vital ECG provides ECG reports powered by Tricog Health, a platform that instantly and accurately interprets ECG readings with advanced technology and medical expertise. GOQii’s data shows that since August 2019, a total of over 10000 ECGs have been taken and the average age, of approximately 1000 users using the device, is 45 years of age. The ECG report is verified by Tricog & delivered within one minute in GOQii App. The ECG report in PDF format can be shared immediately with the doctors via Whatsapp, E-Mail, etc.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 17.7 million people lost their lives due to cardiovascular disease in 2015, making it the number one killer. In India, around 1.5-3 million deaths happen due to heart attacks every year. The high rate of mortality caused by heart attacks is mainly because the symptoms are often ignored or misunderstood. The likelihood of surviving a heart attack is over 80% if the action is taken within the first 2 hours. However, the average time between symptoms and treatment in India is over 6 hours.

“We at GOQii are fostering a preventive health ecosystem. Our aim is to focus on real-time and easy ECG diagnostics on your fingertip, coupled with lifestyle coaching advice. We are interpreting GOQii Vital EGG data along with state-of-the-art deep learning-based Arrhythmia detection algorithms. This is a big step towards the reduction in India’s mortality rate due to heart disorders and is in support of PM Modi’s Vision of #FitIndia,” says Vishal Gondal, Founder & CEO, GOQii.

According to doctors, Cardiac diseases is the number 1 killer in India, due to the lack of awareness and availability of necessary medical infrastructure. Most people only check their ECG once they have suffered a cardiac episode, even though it is a quick and inexpensive test. The reason being most primary care clinics are not equipped with ECG machines owing to their high cost and complex nature. Secondly, a lot of primary care doctors do not receive sufficient training in ECG interpretation.

“Heart palpitations which tend to get overlooked is a strong indicator or symptom of an underlying heart problem. By raising awareness & providing a band which easily provides an ECG report by means of a simple touch, GOQii is revolutionizing the prevention of serious heart and brain ailments,” says Rajashree Menon, Business Head- Healthcare, GOQii.

The GOQii Vital ECG along with Tricog is here to bring in a new generation of heart monitoring on people’s wrists. “Undetected Arrhythmias can lead to potentially life-threatening conditions like strokes, that can be prevented with the use of technology and medicine,” says Dr. Charit Bhograj, Chief Cardiologist and CEO at TricogBhograj.

Adding and echoing Dr Bhograj’s words is Dr. Vanita Arora, Director and Head Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab & Arrhythmia Services, Max Hospital, Saket. She adds, “The GOQii Vital ECG band will help diagnose symptoms of arrhythmia that are transitory in nature, thus aiding in quick analysis and interpretation as the symptoms exist only for a brief period. The patient can understand that the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat is irregular in a period of 30 seconds, and can take immediate action to prevent any fatalities.” Atrial Fibrillation increases the risk of Stroke and associated complications.

The GOQii Vital ECG wrist wearable can record a single-lead ECG, off the user’s wrist and makes diagnosis readily available to the masses. Also, users can book an online consultation with a cardiac specialist for a nominal fee. The consultant can help analyse the ECG report along with the lifestyle data, to recommend changes.

The band also has a feature to detect serious heart conditions like Atrial Fibrillation. This has been made possible due to Tricog Health’s deep learning-based Arrhythmia detection algorithm -DeepRhythm™. It will provide GOQii’s users with accurate interpretation of their single-lead ECG. DeepRhythm is Tricog’s proprietary algorithm* (FDA pending) that has been developed with over three years of research, using 30 million traces of ECG recordings to detect several forms of Arrhythmias. The GOQii Vital ECG is only a screening device and not a medical-grade device.

Inclusion of Persons With Disabilities In The Outdoors

persons with disabilitiesAnyone who is an avid trekker, nature enthusiast or just loves sitting by a quiet lake on a bright sunny day cannot bear being away from the rustling of trees, the winds that brush against their skin or the rays of the warm sun embracing their body for too long. More so, they can’t keep away from the freedom and thrill the outdoors offer. The great outdoors are always open to everyone. It is your right to experience what it means to be in the open, irrespective if you cycle, skate, run, climb mountains or play sports. The outdoors are open to everyone, including Persons With Disabilities.

Who Are Persons With Disabilities?

As per the UN, the term persons with disabilities is used to apply to all persons with disabilities, including those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various attitudinal and environmental barriers, hinders their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.

But Can PWDs Actually Live On Equal Basis With Others?

Imagine having to deal with an injury that takes a while to heal. You miss out on your morning runs, you’d have to tweak your diet a little, probably give up a trip you were planning because you are unable to move or perform any activity. It is a hindrance. That long awaited weekend ruined by an injury or a temporary disability. Now, imagine living with that injury or disability for life. Imagine not having the chance to see that beautiful sunrise, take a carefree stroll in the park, to cycle, to ride, to run or do something that you would love doing.

No. Persons With Disabilities do not share the same opportunities that able-bodied individuals do but as they say, you can never keep a burning desire down for too long. There are always barriers to the things you want to achieve and you can overcome those barriers. There are always people who will break stereotypes, go against the grain and accomplish something extraordinary.

Paving the Path & Breaking Stereotypes

In 2018, a team of 3 blind climbers and 10 able-bodied individuals from India and Israel took an expedition to Mt Kilimanjaro that stands at about 5,895 meters above sea level. It was India’s first “inclusive climb” to Africa’s tallest peak. The inclusive climb was to question our rigid views about disability and shatter stereotypes that plague Persons With Disabilities.

“The climb was a major challenge but we did it,” said Anusha Subramanian, the expedition leader and who has been working towards building awareness about Inclusion in the outdoors, . “The Kilimanjaro inclusive climb saw participation of visually challenged as well as sighted climbers. This sends out a strong message that all of us are part of the same society. Mountains and the outdoors do not differentiate between anyone, so why is it that we differentiate among people? I have always believed that to change something, you have to be the change yourself. We can, indeed, be inclusive and grow together beautifully.”

In 2019, Anusha Subramanian, along with Sanket Bhirud, who was born blind, took the GOQii Trail Challenge which was a 50km, arduous trail that snaked through Mandangad. It was a challenging trail, not just for Sanket but even the other 120 odd sighted participants. This challenge that Anusha and Sanket undertook was again to build awareness about  inclusion of disabled people in the outdoors as well as the lesser privileged.

You will see varied activities such as these where PWDs have sought to break stereotypes by participating in marathons, tandem cycling with an able-bodied person or simply doing what they love, all with an aim to make sports and the outdoors more inclusive to everyone despite their disabilities. Whether disabled or not, we believe that every person has a right to enjoy the outdoors and stay active.

Last, but not the least, always keep in mind that we are all alike in more ways than we are different. PWDs are normal human beings where some just lack the sense of sight, hearing or may not be able to walk but have the same kinds of interests as everyone else. One just needs to take time out to get to know them and then you will understand how cool, fun and alike these guys are. Try it some time!

How To Stay Safe From Infections During Navratri

navratri

This year’s Navratri is going to be both special and totally different since it is going to be celebrated amid a worldwide pandemic. Even though we all want to celebrate and enjoy after being locked down for the past few months, there is an apprehension in our hearts of getting infected. If you’re confused about what to do, we have a few tips to help you protect yourself and your loved ones during Navratri!

How To Stay Safe During Navratri

  1. Have enough calories from healthy food, including lots of different colored vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, dairy, pulses, and legumes in small and frequent meals at regular intervals. Also, make sure that you eat food items that are easy to digest.
  2. Stay hydrated: Water intake can be challenging during fasts. Water cleanses our body and adequate hydration levels can help maintain the health of mucous membranes and decrease irritation while coughing, sneezing, and even just breathing. It helps flush out toxins/pathogens. So, hydrate yourself with plain water, coconut water, lemon water, kokum water, lukewarm milk, buttermilk, fruit smoothies, etc.
  3. Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can affect how fast you recover from illness and your susceptibility to infections. Throughout our sleep, the immune system releases proteins known as cytokines that have protective properties against infections/inflammation, and sleep deprivation can decrease the production of these protective cytokines. Hence never miss 7-8 hours of sleep.
  4. Continue with physical activities like walking and yoga. It increases blood circulation which also expedites the circulation of antibodies or WBC’s and facilitates their reach to the site of infection efficiently and facilitates recovery. Regular physical activity also helps reduce stress, which can be a major contributor to compromised immunity.

How To Prevent Exposure to the Virus (As per WHO)

If I am attending a small gathering or an event, what precautions should I take to protect myself and others from getting infected with covid-19?

  • Always check local regulations before attending an event.
  • Stay at home if you are feeling unwell.
  • Always comply with the following 3 basic preventive measures,
  • Maintain at least 1-meter distance from others, and wear a mask at all times.
  • Cover a sneeze or cough with a tissue or bent elbow and immediately dispose of the tissue in a closed-lid bin. Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or with a hand sanitizer.

If I am organizing a small gathering or an event, what precautions should I take to prevent the spread of Covid-19 among guests?

  • Always check local guidelines before planning your event.
  • Brief guests about precautions before the event starts; during the event, remind guests of these precautions and ensure they are followed.
  • Choose outdoor venues over indoor spaces – if indoors, ensure the area is well-ventilated.
  • Minimize crowding by staggering arrivals and departures, numbering entries, designating seats/places, and marking the floor to ensure physical distancing between people of at least one meter.
  • Provide all necessary supplies to attendants/participants – hand hygiene stations, hand sanitizer or soap and water, tissues, closed-lid bins, distance markers, masks.

What You Must Avoid Doing

  1. No calorie-dense fried, sweets, gravied foods
  2. No starving: Do not stay hungry for long as starving releases the stress hormone cortisol, which can suppress some immune responses. So, if you are planning a fast, it is important to take care of your health and plan your meals at frequent intervals.
  3. People who are ill and with certain chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiac disease, kidney disease, breathing difficulties/asthma/sinusitis, etc., and including those with Covid-19, must be exempt from fasting.
  4. Avoid the 3 Cs: Spaces that are Closed, Crowded or involve Close contact. Outbreaks have been reported in closed, crowded indoor settings where people talk loudly, shout, breathe heavily or sing. In such environments, the virus appears to spread by respiratory droplets or aerosols more efficiently, hence, taking precautions is all the more important.

This year, because of the global pandemic sweeping across all the globe, we will have to do our part, to curb the spread of coronavirus. Hence, enjoy the celebration of the festival responsibly and judiciously!

We hope this article helps you! To further track and mitigate the spread of infections, get the GOQii Smart Vital which measures vitals such as blood oxygen (SpO2), body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure – all of which could help you flag out any possibilities of an infection.
