Common Food Myths About Diabetes

myths about diabetesThe prevalence of diabetes is alarmingly spreading worldwide. Data from WHO shows that its global prevalence was about 8% in 2011 and is estimated to rise to 10% by 2030. Some of my patients are of the impression that they cannot lead a normal life once they’ve been diagnosed with Diabetes. I always tell them to treat diabetes normally. The main focus should be on food, followed by activity and then medication. If instructions are followed well, your diabetes will be under control. However, my experience has been that when it comes to food, most have many misconceptions which are very important to clear. I would like to share few of these common myths about Diabetes with you as well.

Common Food Myths About Diabetes

1. Avoid Rice
This is the commonest myth which everyone has, including people planning to eat rice. White rice is not bad. It is a simple sugar which easily shoots the sugar. However, if you have a good source of proteins like sprouts/curd/buttermilk along with the meal, it helps in the slow release of sugar.
Healthy Alternative: You can opt for brown rice which is packed with antioxidants and fiber.

2. Avoid Potatoes
Many people avoid potato thinking it raises blood sugar. However, potatoes being starchy, need to be eaten in moderation. Though high on carbohydrates, it is also rich in Vitamin B6 which helps in nerve functioning at cellular level. Also, the cooking medium plays an important role. A boiled potato is far better than a deep fried potato.
Healthy Alternative: If the potato is clubbed with some other veggie, that’s absolutely alright as the portion of potato would be low. A boiled or barbequed or grilled potato is a good option as well.

3. Avoid Sugar
Everyone says, I avoid sugary stuff, still my sugars are not under control. However, if you see the other part of their diet, it’s loaded with fats meaning deep fried stuff, chips, wafers, etc. This is because of the insulin resistance which is predominantly seen in Type 2 Diabetic people. The fat gets deposited at the abdominal region which resists insulin from reaching the cells. This leads to high sugar levels in the blood. Hence, along with sugar, unhealthy fats need to be kept at bay as well. Remember, not all fats are bad.
Healthy Alternative: If you plan to make vada/samosa at home, you can even roast them which requires less oil that equals less harm. If it is eaten out, moderation needs to be followed.

4. Avoid All The Fruits (especially mangoes/banana/grapes/chikoo)
Many people say that fruits are sweet, hence need to be avoided. However, the truth is that fruits are natural sugars and provide instant energy. Moreover, they are packed with antioxidants, vitamins and trace minerals. The timing of when you eat the fruits is equally important. It is best to consume them on an empty stomach for better absorption of nutrients or else, they can also be eaten during mid-morning or mid evening before 6 pm. It is always better to opt for a whole fruit instead of fruit juice.
Healthy Alternative: Combine fruits with a handful of nuts for the dose of fiber which is present in nuts. You can also have chilled fruit yogurt (chopped fruits in yogurt).

These are a few common myths about diabetes! It is the lack of awareness that can mislead patients. Lastly, remember that sugar by itself is a sweet poison which has it’s own disadvantages. The healthy alternative to sugar is jaggery, honey and stevia (natural sweetener). As a message to all diabetics, I’d like to remind you that you can lead a normal life by following a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Is Your Relationship Abusive?

abusive relationshipShweta Mishra, aged 21, met her ex-boyfriend at a friend’s party. They soon became close and started seeing each other. The guy had recently gotten out of one relationship and used to get very abusive at times. He would get drunk and talk about his ex-girlfriend which badly affected her self-esteem, to the point where she started considering herself ugly. He would also call her names and say that she was with him only because she wanted money. She started doubting her own attractiveness and self-worth slowly. His abusive behaviour did not end there. He would get jealous if she talked to any other guy and even forbid her to talk to the attractive ones.

He would try to touch her inappropriately when he was drunk which she detested. One day, it got much worse than the other days. He was badly drunk and started touching her inappropriately. She had started hating the smell of alcohol to the point that it made her nauseous. She said a repeated no but he went on groping her. That night she had the worst breakdown ever. The worst part was that he blamed her for being frigid and difficult the next day and told her that now she would make him the bad guy.

Shweta started having a series of breakdowns where she would hate herself. She started scratching herself as she felt ‘dirty’ and ‘ugly’. She would feel his face on her body and want to cut herself. Finally, she decided to walk out of the relationship to preserve herself. But even after months, she still has trust-issues in relationships. She had several episodes of breakdowns even after that when she hurt herself to ease the pain.

Does the above scenario sound familiar? Have you been mistaking an abusive relationship for ‘love’? If so, read on.

Love in young age is full of hormones, tumultuous changes, confusion and chaos. Adolescents and young adults often find themselves lost when it comes to finding out information on safe sex practices or healthy relationships. Popular media promotes eve-teasing, stalking, possessiveness and ownership behaviour as ‘love’. With increasing peer pressure to have a girlfriend or a boyfriend, a young mind which is already grappling with questions of self-worth is seduced with the idea of having someone as a partner. Most victims choose to continue being in abusive relationships just to avoid the shame of ‘breaking-up’. The communication gap between parents and children while growing up makes the situation even more difficult.

So how do you recognise these signs of abuse?

Emotional abuse or psychological abuse is categorized by a pattern of behaviour that leaves another person feeling isolated, degraded or worthless. It is a way for the abuser to maintain power and control in the relationship. Psychological pain can be just as bruising as a slap or punch, even if it leaves no physical mark. Let us talk about these in detail.

  • Intimidation: can be subtle and includes veiled or indirect threats. The partner could be watching each movement, checking on your whereabouts, checking your phone or springing up on you unexpectedly. This can have a damaging effect on a person’s overall sense of safety and lead to anxiety.
  • Explicit Threats: Sometimes, intimidation is not so subtle. We all know the infamous acid attacks on the victims who had the courage to say no to their spurned lovers. There are far too many instances of the partner threatening the girl with self-harm or suicide in case she leaves him.
  • Slut Shaming: This is another form of abuse which could leave the abused trapped, unwanted and ashamed. ‘If you don’t go out with me, I will tell everyone what we did in bed.’ Worse, the abuser could get explicit photos or videos of the abused and blackmail the partner into doing things they might not be ready for.
  • Name Calling: Abuser might call the partner ugly, fat, dark, stupid or similar such which eventually leads them to believe that it is true. The sense of self in teenage years is still fragile and such behaviour might lead to withdrawal and depression.
  • The Silent Treatment: Sometimes the abuser might use non-communication as a form of punishment to coerce the other partner. They might completely ignore the partner till they give in to their wishes. There are abusers who refuse to acknowledge the presence of their partners in public and are responsive when alone.
  • Constant Criticism: ‘You can’t wear that!’ or ‘You cannot hang out with those friends’ or ‘You cannot go there’ is something which abusers use to erode the self-esteem of the other person. This may make one feel unacceptable and feel bad about themselves.
  • Sexual Abuse: Any sexual contact or activity with an intimate partner that makes a person feel uncomfortable, with the purpose of controlling through fear, threats, coercion, manipulation or violence. This may be with or without the presence of physical violence at the time of the act or within the relationship. These happen mostly as there is lack of parental consent and the victims do not want to talk about it due to fear, guilt and shame. The victims could be both men and women, young adults who are in same-sex relationship, all ages – tween and upwards. Most such victims who were forced to have sex are less likely to use condoms. The perpetrator is frequently an intimate partner. Date rapes, forced oral sex, unwanted touching – all constitute part of sexual abuse.

If you have faced any of the above, it might be time to walk out of the relationship. This is not always easy but try talking to someone you trust – a friend, sibling or trustworthy adult. And always remember – IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT.

8 Simple Ways to Keep the Environment and Yourself Healthy

World Environment DayImagine that you’ve just started out on your journey towards a healthier lifestyle. You go out for a jog. A few minutes away from home, you have to run through garbage and breathe in polluted air that goes above the recommended AQI. In the bargain of trying to get healthy and active, your body has gotten a little more damaged because of an unhealthy environment.

Unhealthy Environment! Does that ring a bell? A whooping 9 out of 10 people on Earth breathe highly polluted air and more than 80% of urban dwellers across the world have to endure outdoor pollution that exceeds health standards as per the World Health Organization’s World Global Ambient Air Quality database.

This essentially means that even if you lead a healthy lifestyle by eating the right foods, exercising and getting the required amount of rest, you can still fall prey to illnesses and disease based on the environment you’re living in. This scenario is especially worse in a country like India where pollution levels are at an all-time high!

So how exactly can you keep yourself healthy while helping the environment? The answer lies in taking small steps towards sustainable development. Here are a few things you can do!

1. Take a Walk Anywhere! 

Definitely the best exercise known to mankind! Walking helps you shed weight, improves your health and is great for the environment! Why take a vehicle to a walk able distance? You’ll be saving fuel as well as your health! You can even up the pace by jogging or running.

2. Cycle Your Way to Good Health

To cover distances that are too far to walk, there’s nothing like cycling! You’ll be amazed at the amount of fuel you will be saving by riding your bicycle to work. As a plus point, it is a great way to stay in shape and improve your aerobic fitness. If you haven’t yet, try this amazing environmentally friendly mode of transport now!

3. Opt For a Reusable Water Bottle

Bottled water is never a good idea. Given the fact that the chemicals in plastic bottles are not good for your health or the environment. What you drink in a few minutes, lingers in the environment for a thousand years. Instead, opt for an environmentally-friendly reusable stainless-steel bottle. Avoid contributing to the piling loads of plastic bottles and disposable tea/coffee cups.

4. Shower Less

If you love water as much as we do and want your future generations to enjoy the same, cut down on your shower time! While contemplating existential queries for an hour under a warm shower seems like a good idea, you’re wasting an important resource that might get scarce soon! Preserve for the future!

5. Give it Back! Plant a Tree

In your backyard or as a part of a community, you can plant a tree (or several) as a family project. Plants and trees keep you cool and are your natural source of oxygen! It is especially important to do so in a city where pollution levels only keep rising. Having greens around you is never a bad thing.

6. Grow Your Own Food

Do you frequent the supermarket for your food? Well, how about growing your own? Having a small vegetable garden of your own can be quite fruitful! For instance, the vegetables you grow will be fresh, tasty and pesticide/insecticide free. Also, imagine the long hours of exercise you’ll be putting in to grow them! You can also explore micro-greens as an option!

7. Take The Stairs

Give your butt and legs a great workout while saving on power used to run escalators and elevators! Taking the stairs is a great way to get in shape and reduce power usage!

8. Organize a Clean Up Drive

Karma has always been an important part of GOQii and there’s no better way to give back to nature all the good things it provides than cleaning it up! While out on a walk or run in your park or locality, keep a grocery bag handy and pick the mess you find along the way. You’ll be a lot fitter and will feel more productive.
