Cue to happiness

Happiness is a very subjective matter and differs from person to person and ultimately all our efforts and desires lead us to one underlying fact of attaining happiness in life.  Don’t we all live to be happy?

Many thought processes exist within us. These ‘thoughts’ create our belief systems, these beliefs urge us to have ‘emotions’, these emotions seep into our ‘energy body’ or the ‘aura’ and then finally settle down in our ‘physical body’ or ‘physical world’.

To elaborate, the brain sends out electromagnetic waves to the body for any action or reaction and basic functions of the body, including breathing, heartbeat, hormone secretion etc. are controlled by the mind whether we are awake, asleep or in a state of trance.

So, if the Mind can do all this, it would be natural for us to assume that the mind is also capable of restricting the blood flow, heart rate and movement. It can even restrict the functioning of the digestive and liver thereby decreasing metabolism and adding weight, causing BP, Cholesterol etc. At the end of the day, we may call this Disease and one of the most important factors of its cause is dependent largely on our thought process or rather how we think.

Disease originates from our mind-activity and it has been researched subjectively that worry affects your spleen, fear affects the kidney, and grief targets your heart and so on. The impact of our thinking mind has a resultant effect on our physical body, good and bad.

Therefore, when it comes to healing yourself, you have to also sort it out at the thought level and soon you will realize that it will have a positive and long-lasting effect on your physical body. The same goes with your physical world and surrounding. It is the inner workings that have the most result.

All this energy and thought process also reflects our real-life circumstances. You may have experienced that if you feel upset one morning, there is a chance that your entire day would be bad. Repeated negative thinking, once ingrained into the mind can create repeated negative experiences outside control. The good news is that it is not permanent and can be changed!

Here’s why and how,

Happiness in itself is a HABIT- a conditioning or association the Mind has received from a very early age through REPETITIVE thinking. All habits are created through repetition. So, learning to be thankful and having gratitude for simple things, even the very oxygen we breathe, is essential, so as to understand how not react to troubled situations but instead respond with ease, peace and compassion.

With our awareness and understanding and wisdom to respond positively to a situation, we find that the issues in life that used to upset us miraculously feel minuscule and sometimes even disintegrate. Our energy body changes in frequency and vibration thereby attracting more positive opportunities and experiences to us.

How we cultivate this habit of happiness, can vary widely, we can choose to;

1) Meditate regularly teaching the body and mind to regularly let go of stress and create an environment of peace and calm

2) Use a hobby as a trigger for happiness

3) Use a technique called ‘Affirmations’; where we use a statement that is completely opposite to our current limiting belief, and repeat the sentence as many times with feeling. It is to pass a command from the conscious mind to the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind has the ability, to accept anything as true, to do whatever it takes to turn it into reality, creating a new neuro-pathways in the brain. For eg; Limiting belief – It’s hard to lose weight. New belief you want to cultivate – Losing weight is easy for me

4) Express gratitude or keep a journal of thankfulness

5) Not to identify with suffering, loss, or illness as being who you are. Being kind to yourself and others is a skill and developed with practice and mindfulness, which leads to happiness.

Lastly and most importantly, is to keep consistent because we are all human. Emotions and experiences are a part of growth and learning and wisdom of a wonderful life, meanwhile, we can always train our minds to ‘let go’ of things that affect us adversely.

Eating healthy during Ramadan fasting
Who says you cannot be healthy if you’re fasting for an entire month?

You can eat healthily and feel good during an entire month of fasting provided you follow the right methods. The Holy month of Ramadan has begun this week and I have been fasting regularly for over two decades during Ramadan.

Considering the heat wave that is still on in the city with no rains as yet, one has to be extra careful and prepared about what to eat during the non-fasting period, so that you can maintain your health, fitness, endurance and flexibility during the entire month.

Fasting during the month of Ramadan or any other religious months/period can be good for your health if it’s done correctly. All changes happen in the body system during fasting (starvation). Stored nutrients, especially muscle proteins are broken down to provide fuel to our body. Fasting diet lacks in macronutrients like carbohydrates and fats which leads to weakness. In order to avoid this having healthy options of food during fasting is very important.

A person who is fasting needs good and nutrient-rich food which will help to maintain the energy levels in our body on a day to day basis.

Here are few tips for healthy eating options while Ramadan or any other holy fasting period.

Go with Natural food, Not Junk or Processed Foods:

Well, in today’s time processed foods might come across as a very convenient option, but they’re usually filled with unhealthy things like high-fructose corn syrup that leads to overconsumption. Secondly, contains a lot of artificial Ingredients. Most processed foods are Low in Nutrients.

It requires less energy and time to digest processed foods. Processed foods contain MSG (Monosodium glutamate – to enhance flavour), it also contains lots of sodium and typically all the wrong heart-clogging oils. Therefore it is always good to go with natural food available if possible go with homemade food.

Don’t break your fast with a feast:

Be Careful. If you are not careful, the food eaten during the pre-dawn and dusk meals can cause some adverse effects. Those observing the fast in Ramadan month should have at least two meals a day, the pre-dawn meal (Suhoor) and a meal at dusk (Iftar).

The way to approach your diet during fasting is similar to the way you should be eating outside of the Ramadan month. It should contain foods from all the major food groups:

– Fruit and vegetables

– Bread, cereals and potatoes

– Meat, fish, or alternatives

– Milk and dairy foods

– Foods containing fat and sugar

Hydrate Your Body:

When we fast for long hours, our body gets dehydrated over the course of the day. During the non-fasting period, we should take care of the hydration levels in our body. After a long day of fasting, it’s difficult to drink a lot of water or have lots of water-based food items. But, we can have fruit juices and soups made with veggies to give our body the additional water it needs. A great way to break the fast is with ‘Dates’. Also consider having coconut water, or making smoothies, coolers and fruity drinks which are super-hydrating.

Wholesome foods during Ramadan:

Suhoor- the pre-dawn meal should be a wholesome and moderate meal that is filling and provides enough energy for many hours. Ideally, it should be slow digesting food like salads, brown bread, cereal (especially oats) so that your body will get energy for a long time constant. Also, you can have some fluids with vitamins, such as fruit and vegetable juice.

It’s customary for Muslims to break the fast (Iftar) with some dates. Dates provide a burst of energy.  Fruit juices also have a similar, revitalizing effect. My favourite, of course, is “FALOODA”. Start by drinking plenty of water, which helps rehydrate and reduces the chances of overindulgence.

SOME QUICK TIPS: What to have and What to avoid:

Foods to avoid

– deep-fried foods, for example, pakoras, samosas and fried dumplings

– High-sugar and high-fat foods, including sweets such as gulab jamun, rasgulla and balushahi

– High-fat cooked foods, for example, parathas, oily curries and greasy pastries

– Fatty meats, Liver and organ meats, Hotdog and sausages, large amounts of prawn, shrimp and shellfish

– Whole milk, Ice cream and whipped cream, full cream yoghurt and labneh, Full cream cheese especially yellow cheese, Creamy and cheese sauces

– Coconut (the only fruit rich in saturated fats that are unhealthy for the heart), Fried vegetables, Boiled vegetables with butter, Juices with added sugar

– Pastries that contain large amounts of fat (doughnuts, croissants, Danish pastries), Fried rice, Fried potato chips or French fries

Healthy alternatives

– Baked samosas and boiled or steamed dumplings

– Chapattis made without oil

– Baked or grilled meat and chicken, Fish, Grilled or boiled skinless chicken, Lean veal or lamb, moderate amounts of prawns, Legumes such as beans, lentils, and peas, eggs

– Milk-based sweets and puddings such as rasmalai and barfee, skimmed or low-fat milk, skimmed or low-fat yoghurt and labneh, Low-fat cheese

– All fresh vegetables, boiled, baked, steamed or cooked with a little oil, Seasoned vegetables or vegetables with lemon juice or a little oil, Fresh fruits and natural fruit juice (in moderation)

– Brown bread, Plain spaghetti or rice (without ghee or high fat sauce), Grains with no added fat, Baked or boiled potatoes

Healthy cooking methods

– Shallow frying

– Grilling, Roasting, Steaming or Baking is healthier and helps retain the taste and original flavour of the food, especially with chicken and fish.

Know the health benefits of BUCKWHEAT- a Wonder grain

All of us in India are familiar with the word ‘KuttuKaAtta’, the most preferable cereal during fasts. This is nothing but ‘Buckwheat flour’. Since childhood, I have enjoyed various tasty dishes made out of Buckwheat flour but only during fasts. I always wondered why this particular grain is eaten only during fast and not round the year? But, it was only after I took Nutrition as a subject of specialization that I got my answers.

Buckwheat flour is very rich in protein and during fasts, except milk or its products, no other protein-rich food is allowed to eat. Only foods rich in carbohydrates and fats are the delicacies to be enjoyed during the time of fast. So to balance the meals with a good blend of carbohydrate, protein and fats and to fulfil the day’s protein requirement, buckwheat flour is eaten on fast days.

I sometimes wonder how intelligent our ancestors were who invented all these combinations to be eaten which is being followed by a tradition even today without knowing the reason. MAYBE THEY KNEW!! It is only after so much of scientific research on nutrition since the last two decades that we have got to know the facts of this wonder grain.

This wonderful cereal is packed with various nutrients providing amazing health benefits

  • As mentioned above, it is very rich in protein as compared to other cereals with a biological value of above 90. This nominates it under ‘first class protein’ category and also due to its essential amino acid profile.
  • It is rich in iron, a nutrient whose deficiency among women is maximum in the world. Other than iron, it also contains good quantities of magnesium, manganese, zinc and selenium which are needed for building immunity, strong bones, improving blood flow and maintaining the good texture of hair and skin.
  • It contains appreciable amounts of B complex vitamins like niacin which is needed for the breakdown of carbohydrates and fats.
  • It is loaded with dietary fibre which has a role in improving cholesterol and blood glucose levels.
  • It contains health benefiting antioxidants too like polyphenols which gives protection from heart diseases, diabetes, various types of cancer and also delays ageing.

But the irony is, the consumption of this amazing cereal is only restricted during fasts. In spite of containing so many health-promoting nutrients, it has not been able to attain the status of a staple food in our country.

A country like India where diabetes and obesity have become epidemic and more and more population is getting diagnosed with ‘Metabolic syndrome’, a condition characterized by a cluster of health conditions such as central obesity, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, high triglyceride levels and low HDL levels.  Apart from a sedentary lifestyle and excessive intake of junk food as the main reasons, I think the major culprit is our excessive intake of cereals especially rice which has very high carbohydrate content and less protein content. The habit of eating polished rice further adds to the havoc as polishing takes away all the vitamins and minerals present in rice.

So what, if we replace our rice intake with buckwheat, ‘the wonderful grain’?

Buckwheat is beneficial in various health conditions like diabetes, celiac disease, heart disease, anaemia and the list goes on. Buckwheat helps in managing blood glucose levels as it is rich in protein which promotes the synthesis of more insulin in the body. It is a boon for people suffering from celiac disease i.e. gluten intolerance since it does not contain gluten. It is beneficial for heart patients also because of its high antioxidant content. People suffering from anaemia can also be benefited from this cereal due to its high iron content. Buckwheat flour is widely available everywhere and is mostly consumed either as grains or flour.

Hence, after knowing amazing health benefits of buckwheat flour, I am sure you would like to add this cereal to your daily diet and will not only use it during fasts. Generally, everybody thinks that ‘HEALTHY FOOD DOES NOT taste GOOD’. But, I am sure this wonderful cereal would prove this statement wrong with its finger-licking taste.

GOQii Fellow Srishti Bakshi Walks for Women Safety

She walked alone 3800 km across 11 states and 230 days and covered the stretch from Kanyakumari to Jammu & Kashmir on a mission to create awareness about the safety of women in India. Srishti Bakshi, a UN women champion for change and a GOQii Fellow of 2018 undertook this mission in support of Women Empowerment. Today, May 19th she will be doing a night walk in Mumbai and reclaim the night as a safe space for women and girls.

She story is interesting from having a good corporate job to starting her social initiative CrossBow, a movement which aims to empower women and make India a safer place for them. The story starts from when she was living with her husband in Hong Kong with a perfect job and everything was good until one day when she realized that while they were being appreciated for being from India but in the same breath she also heard people saying how unsafe India is for women. This kind of disappointed her and Srishti wanted to do something to change this mindset that India is unsafe for women.

She gave up her corporate job and started CrossBow,  She prepared a whole year and underwent extensive physical training — muscle repair therapy — before she started off. She started her mission on Sep 15, 2017,, with at least 65 stops along the route where she has been conducting workshops with women on various themes including digital and financial literacy.

When asked how exhausting was it for her to be on the road walking for 230 days she says, “Apart from the logistical nightmare, the journey was mentally exhausting as I would meet at least a 100 people daily and listen to their issues and try and come up with solutions”.

Let’s join Srishti on her Mumbai Night Walk. Prior to the walk, the event starts at 5 pm at High Street Phoenix, Mumba with power-packed performances by Sofa Ashraf, Aranya Johar, Rekha Bhardwaj and the likes After which there is a public night walk from High Street Phoenix to Haji Ali. The night will end with Srishti continuing to walk up to Gateway of India.
