Game of Health: A Dangling Carrot

game of health“In a world obsessed to train us how to say no creatively, I still wish each of us enjoy ability to say yes to each other more often.”

Sometimes I think what a guinea pig I am, thanks for all the continuous bombardment of different marketing experiments targeted to make me behave in predictable manner. Despite being aware of how we are led; we happily let others rule our mind. If geniuses are not many, same goes for fools, most of us are merely wired beings who get pulled in different directions by few who understand mind and behaviors better.

Am I being harsh? No only truthful. Let me put it more creatively.

According to Dr. Deepak Chopra we get 60,000 to 80,000 thoughts per day, approximately 50 thoughts in a minute. And it is also said that NOW the present moment lasts for only 3 seconds. The suggestion “Live in The Present” may not hold true for most of us. We may either be in the past or in the future most of the time. Midst of stream of thoughts focusing on one and cherry pick it, is certainly quite an achievement for us.

“Time is not the only currency we use to take a decision; we use lots of emotions.”

Behaviors are always intriguing. And one universal fact about behaviors is we are either buying into or selling out ideas, products, visions. But which ideas, products and visions we will buy may not depend on best available product but on products which align with our thoughts. A glimpse of survey I am conducting as part of my internship:

The need to feel connected with others is heightened during pandemic and technology and food are always around. Pandemic has changed behaviors overnight. Online services, digital platforms are safer and thankfully available choices. New habits are getting formed.

Simple solutions are easiest to follow. If as a nutritionist, I were to suggest you three simple diet behaviors to adopt, they will be:

  1. Choose fresh and natural foods.
  2. Cook your own meals
  3. Love healthy foods. Its easy.

Changing habits is forming new neural connections in our brain. If there are triggers for unhealthy behaviors, there can be triggers for healthy behaviors as well. Let me suggest a few

  • Whenever u crave any food, think of your gut with numerous minute bacteria feeding on the food you ate in previous meal. They have sufficient.
  • Seek help and who best can help you more than yourself. You may laugh but I have two WhatsApp in my phone. And I often send myself a message when I am seeking answers. Try it, you may get answer too.
  • Use drama. Be your own nutritionist, step into the role and speak from that role.

If these sounds weird, there are some very good digital platforms available for support. I personally had a great experience with GOQii in becoming more committed to my resolve of being healthier and active physically. It deeply integrates and aligns behaviors by providing good hand holding with coaching, medical support while monitoring steps, blood pressure, heart rate and sleep.

Our brain is more inclined to change if it receives reward for every action taken. GOQii successfully taps into the psyche and rewards clients with digital currency which can be used to buy novel and utilitarian products available on app at good price offers. I enjoyed impressive live sessions and chats with coaches who bring forth different and innovative therapies. One can also enjoy good walk for the mind while reading the GOQii blog and there’s much more. Want to feel the high of helping others while becoming healthy? Its possible, for every step taken one is awarded karma points which can be donated for charity causes offered on the app. I surely loved this feature in the GOQii App.

The satisfaction of earning money and using it to buy healthy products while ensuing healthy habits, is surely satiating. I purchased some very innovative products at a good price.  A wonderfully crafted health experience which works on your mind and make health a great fun game to play daily.

We are led to buy products which we may or may not need. However, a platform to guide our mind towards healthy behaviors, is certainly technology put at best use.

Eat healthy, maintain healthy weight, love yourself and say yes more often.

Make a Difference with GOQii Karma

GOQii Karma

We often think of karma as an intangible entity, something that we can’t touch or predict. There’s a fair chance that our notions of karma might not be true at all but that doesn’t negate the fact that doing good creates personal happiness and paves the way for gratitude.

It has been scientifically proven that the selfless act of giving creates happiness and promotes overall wellbeing. The opportunity to do good is a quality present in all of us. Humans by nature are altruistic beings. It is in our nature to help. All we must do is recognize that part of us and walk together for the greater good. That’s what GOQii Karma is all about! A tangible way to see the impact you make on the world by being healthy.

How does it Work?

Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s iconic Dandi March of 390km, for every 390 steps you clock while using GOQii, you are awarded 1 Karma Point. Once you accumulate sufficient GOQii Karma Points, you can choose to donate these points to social causes listed in the GOQii App’s karma section. The points you donate are converted into monetary contributions by our Karma Partners and our Karma Partners help the underprivileged via these causes.

What Has GOQii Karma Achieved?

Since 2015, with the Karma Points donated by our players to our Karma Partners, we have helped and enabled many individuals throughout India. Some of our key highlights include:

1. Supporting Victims Affected by the Tamil Nadu Floods: The heavy rainfall that plagued Tamil Nadu in 2015 drove thousands of people out of their homes. 5479 GOQii Players walked and contributed a total of 3.9 million Karma Points to Oxfam India to support those affected by providing them hygiene kits, non-food items, dry food ration kits, soap and chlorine tablets and hygiene promotion activities.

2. Empowering Women against Violence: Through our Karma platform we were able to aid Oxfam India in their quest to end violence against women. Through this program, Oxfam India reached out to more than 42,000 women to end violence and established 23 support centres within formal and informal locations to provide psycho-social counselling and legal aid to women facing this issue.

3. Upcycling to Slippers for Children in Need: This cause enabled the collection of old shoes and Rs. 199/pair to upcycle them to slippers and donate them to children in need. Greensole’s vision is to contribute to social good, by creating a self-sustaining infrastructure that facilitates the provision of the basic necessity of footwear to everyone. This cause was completed with 1, 30, 00,000 Karma Points donation by our players.

4. Trees for Rural Communities, Chintamani, Karnataka: Still an on-going cause, Grow-Trees.com wants to allow users to satisfy a private purpose of greeting someone through an eTreeCertificate, while doing social good by planting trees. With Grow-Trees you can plant trees with just a few clicks and gift them to celebrate festivals, birthdays, anniversaries or other special occasions using their personalized e-certificate. The cost of each tree is INR 85.

You can browse through some of the causes on the Karma section in the GOQii App. Just like this, every step you take makes a difference. So clock in your daily steps, collect and donate karma points as you never know who you might be helping.

On the day of Gandhi Jayanti, pledge to walk daily so you can help someone else get on their feet!

“I learnt to listen to myself and understand my own body. I do not force myself to do anything”

2a

He has never had any fitness regime. He says he has had more ailments and has been on medication for the last 3 years. As a result of the medications his body weakened and could not fight back. He has also been subject to constant back pains. Above all this he has a sedentary work life. All day long he sits at his desk and his weight had started going up. He never cultivated any good habits nor was he aware of any. There were zero activity levels. Bottom line- he had constant health issues. But, last 5 months there has been a drastic change within Anthony Soares who has started walking the path of fitness and is more positive about life. He has managed to get his health back on track—one step at a time. Let’s hear it from him what changed him.

I will soon turn 40 and I realised that I needed to get over a lot of issues. I need to physically be able to lead a better and healthy life in the future.

I have constantly been subject to some medical issues and been on regular medication. I was also on the heavier side and was unhappy about myself overall. I was looking for something that could help me get my basic health in place. I knew of fitness bands that help measure everything and lets you adjust your habits to get the results you want.

I started researching for the same and I was convinced to go for the MI band but unfortunately, it was out of stock. And then I stumbled upon GOQii which was slightly higher in price. I remembered a friend wearing GOQii band and I asked her for more information it. Once I understood how it works and that it came with a coach who can help you make the changes, I was convinced to go for it.  At the point when I took the band, I realised it is a good replacement for my watch.

I started with a 3 months plan. I had no goals clear in my head to achieve. I was expecting some miracle to happen with GOQii. My coach Tarun Arora then explained how I will need to change my habits and work hard to achieve my goals. She explained everything in detail to me and what I needed to do.

I started with running and interval training. Within a month of starting to run I participated in the 5 km ILFS run and hurt my knee badly. The moment I hurt myself, my coach and the doctor advised me not to run for at least a month until the pain completely vanishes. I was not very happy initially but, I realised if I followed their advice I would only get better.

Initially, when I got the band I was clueless about having any goals then I realised it was important to have a goal. My goal was to lose weight. Initially, I thought I should lose about 3-4 kilos. I have always been above 90 roughly plateauing around 94 kilos. In the last two decades, I have been maintaining my weight between 90-94.

After I came on GOQii, I have lost weight purely through right nutrition and exercise. I now weigh 87 kilos within a span of 4 months. I was last at 87 kilos when I got married 9 and a half years ago. So, I can now proudly say that I am back to my old self- looking good. I can tell the difference in myself the moment I started doing more activities. I feel so much more energetic in the morning and I am also mentally more focussed and strong all day long.

The other habit changes that I brought about within me is to drink 2 litres of water daily and do some interval training. This was then improvised by adding proteins to my breakfast and fruits as an evening snack. Then I was introduced to having dates before my run. When I was away from running for a while due to the knee injury, my coach gave me other exercises to do. I also started on having 1 teaspoon apple cider every day.

I am a foodie and it is really difficult to break old habits. But, a lot of what I do now I am aware of it. I have also realised that anything in excess is very bad. Moderation is key I was told by my coach. I have reduced my intake on butter and cheese. At one point I used to have these so often but, now I have it occasionally. I eat mindfully when I got to a restaurant.

From doing nothing at all, I now try to work out all 7 days of the week. If that is not possible then 5 days a week is for sure. My workout includes 3 times cardio and twice a week yoga. I also give my body enough rest. You cannot play around with your body. You have to give it 7 hours sleep daily and have to give it enough nutrition and water.

Being on the GOQii platform I have learnt to train myself to do various things. There is no magic pill that is being given to you. You have to work hard. The first thing I learnt to do is listen to myself and understand my own body. I do not force myself to do anything. If I cannot run one day that day I try and do Yoga instead. I am learning.

People around me especially my family was very surprised at the change I took to. Initially, my family was not very comfortable. They wondered was is this GOQii?  They were not very positive about what I was doing and the changes I was making or had made.

They were surprised that I had started eating fruits because prior to GOQii we never had fruits regularly. But, now over a period they have gotten used to my habits and do not say anything now. They have noticed that I have reduced considerably but, they do not ask how why etc etc…However, they are not too convinced with the changes I have made.

What matters to me is how I feel? Honestly, over the last 5 months, I feel much healthier and positive. I look better, my shoulders are not drooping. The best part now is I have the strength to lift my 4-year-old son when we go to the market and I do not stress about it like I did earlier. I am glad that things that I was not able to do or were not doing earlier I am doing them now.

Thanks to GOQii, I have become very active in life. Apart from running, I have now joined for a Salsa class. I am also planning to start playing a sport. Close to 20 years of my life all I did was just study and then work. Now, at 40 I want to live my life. We live it once, whatever time has gone is gone. But, not anymore. I am glad that I have started on a couple of activities.

What does coachTarun Arora have to say about Anthony?

Anthony is sincere, disciplined and a hardworking person who understands the importance of health. He is always ready to make healthy changes in life once he is convinced of it and then gives his 100% to achieve them. There were few visible things which needed to be changed in his routine like a correct combination of meals, an increase in protein intake which was lacking in every meal and water intake. We started with one habit at a time. The first habit was to increase water intake to 2 litres because his water intake was quite less, we have developed a habit of having 2 litres everyday. This has made a huge difference in his hunger pangs. We then moved to make sure his protein intake is sufficient enough to help him reach his goal of getting a toned body and along with this proper intake of fiber.

Pregnancy- Not by Chance!

048-aerobic-exercises

Whether it is shopping for groceries, clothes, perfumes, appliances etc., we are extremely choosy and want to go for the best. There is no doubt in the fact we would not want to compromise for anything that is not up to the mark. But, sadly, I find that same is not the attitude when it comes to our own body. Whether it is taking care of our body to be fit and healthy or whether it is to take care of it prior to planning a family.

It is very important to realize that one of the pre requisites to conceive a healthy baby is that both the father and the mother must be in the best of health and there are no two ways about it.

Holistic preconception is about nurturing the mind/ emotions, body and spirit to create the most ideal environment for creating and cultivating life. While, much attention is placed on the mother’s health, we know that the health of the sperm is equally important as that of the egg and womb. Precisely why both egg and sperm should be addressed with the intention of increasing fertility and minimizing exposure to toxins.

Prior to starting, both the parents should undergo a complete health check-up (e.g. Medical history, Genetic history, Blood tests- to check for thyroid levels, hemoglobin, Vitamin B12 & Vitamin D, folic acid, Blood sugars). If any medical condition is detected prior, it will only help to correct the situation before conception and reduce the risk of complications in pregnancy like gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, thyroid disorders and anemia.

Start the regime mentioned below, three months prior to your planned conception and continue it till you conceive.

How to prepare for a healthy conception-

  • Diet– Diet should include folic acid rich food. Folic acid plays an important role in the production of red blood cells and helps baby’s neural tube develop into a brain and spinal cord.

e.g. Vegetables-Cluster Beans (Gavarfali), Spinach (Palak), Lady Finger, Tomatoes, Broccoli, Beetroot, French beans.

  • Curds
  • Cereals/pulses
  • Dry fruits- Walnuts (2), Almonds(4)

Eat unrefined, fresh and homemade food as much as possible.

  • Exercises

Exercise is one of the most important aspects of keeping your body healthy. All exercises improve the blood flow to the pelvic organs, including the male and female reproductive organs which is beneficial to conceiving. (http://goqii.com/blog/excercises-pre-pregnancy-a-good-start-is-half-done/).

Remember  “A mother’s health has direct correlation with her baby’s health” , so the earlier you start, the better.

  • Lifestyle

Stop smoking.  Avoid alcohol completely.  Avoid drugs – both pharmaceutical drugs for chronic conditions and recreational drugs.  Avoid caffeine. Avoid exposure to X-rays and Radiations.

  • Stress

Relaxation techniques – Meditation, massage, or Yoga have been known to help people with stress.

Express your thoughts and worries to your spouse, this will eventually strengthen the bond between the couple & always think positive.

  • Hydration

Water is the simplest method of detoxifying and 2-3 liters are recommended daily.

  • Stopping contraception

Stop hormonal pills and remove intrauterine device (IUD) if any, about 3 months before conception is planned. Use a barrier method (like condom) at this time. Allow a minimum of one normal menstrual cycle between stopping contraception and conception.

  • Dental care

If there are any dental problems (e.g. cavity) get it treated before you conceive. Oral infections are associated with premature labor.

A happy healthy mother is equal to happy healthy baby. Martin Luther once said, “Maternity is a glorious thing, since all mankind has been conceived, born, and nourished of women. All human laws should encourage the multiplication of families”.

May this amazing journey of parenthood begin in a holistic healthy way.
