Jayanand Wagh’s Holistic Approach Towards Health And Fitness

Being overweight is a common condition and most of us face it at some point. This is the story of a man who overthrew overweight with just focus and determination. If you think getting your health on track is impossible, listen to this story and give it another thought.

Jayanand Wagh, aged 40, started his journey on December 2015 and was overweight for 20 long years of his life. As he got better, he purchased a GOQii Vital to train for his half marathon goal. His goals also included weight loss and to become fit. Despite the nature of his goal, he was quite stubborn about achieving this without the help of a gym, vigorous diets or any shortcuts. It took him 2 long years to reach his goals and the wait was totally worth it!

How Did He Do It?

His approach to fitness was different. Instead of working for an immediate change, Jayanand Wagh focused on inculcating healthy habits into his lifestyle. These changes included eating a healthier diet with less sugar and carbs. He also introduced exercises such as running and walking along with other home workouts.

The result was slow but it changed the man he was and helped him shed 18kgs in 2 years. His motto was, Sculpt yourself into what you want to become, and that’s exactly what he did over time, with patience and hard work. With his fat loss goal being achieved, Jayanand is now focusing on building lean muscle mass. He has his own marathon journey, successfully completing the 21k milestone twice. Currently, he is training for the Mumbai Marathon 2020 with guidance from GOQii Coach Divya Bhat. He is also using the GOQii RunGPS tracker specifically for this.

When we asked him about the changes he inculcated in his daily life, this is what he had to say:

The first change I made was, to my sleeping pattern. I woke up early and went to bed early. Every morning I would go cycling with my 7-year-old daughter Angel. I led a very inactive and sedentary lifestyle with a job profile that didn’t involve much physical activity. In order to gain control over my mind and to stay focused, I sought help from my mind mentor Sandeep Maheshwari Sir.

Decreasing my junk food intake was a crucial step as this allowed me to progress further with my goals. I also reduced my sugar intake, which I totally cut down over a period of time. My fluid intake, mainly water increased considerably to a level that I drank at least 3 litres of water per day. I never used to eat breakfast before, but developed that habit which helped me very much later on. Nuts, fruits and salads were added to my diet to make breakfast more clean and healthy.

The toughest challenge was to quit smoking and my alcohol intake completely. I quit them both eventually. I developed the habit of carrying a lunchbox from home to work so I can avoid outside food as much as possible. Meditation became an everyday routine along with bodyweight workouts at home by following my health mentor Guru Mann

To have a better understanding of my body, I made it a habit to do an annual full body checkup on my birthday and know where it stands health-wise. I do oil pulling for 20 minutes every morning with virgin coconut oil became a habit. With guidance from wellness mentor and GOQii Master Coach Luke Coutinho, I began Intermittent Fasting and then moved to Dry Fasting. I would fast every Tuesdays and Saturdays for 16 hours, consuming my meals before 7 pm to reset my biological clock. Following these minute changes, I was able to transform my health. Determination and focus are what it took for me to be what I am today and I’m really proud of myself.

Was it really that difficult?

Yes! To stay focused throughout and be motivated is a challenge but would you rather lead an unhealthy life or have more focus & energy? The choice is yours! With simple changes to your everyday life, you can achieve similar goals as Jayanand Wagh and all it requires is relentless dedication. This story is an example to people who believe that it’s too difficult to bring about such changes in your health. Try this holistic approach towards health today and feel the change yourself.

“It is not about losing weight but, it is the way you look at things and how you manage it”

Every player of GOQii is a new story with a new experience. Today we bring you the story of a not so fit housewife and entrepreneur to a fit housewife and entrepreneur now. She credits GOQii Coach for bringing about the positive lifestyle change in her and getting her on a health trail. Here is Ruchi Sandhu’s story in her own words.

I have never been a fitness freak and I was on the heavier side. I was conscious about my   weight gain and had gained weight over a long period of time. I was neither paying any attention towards my weight gain nor was I trying to reduce it. I also did not bring about any change in my diet. To sum it up I was just not paying too much attention to my health and overall well-being.

Then, during my regular check with my doctor, she suggested I do an Insulin test. In that test, it was revealed that I was Insulin resistant and, therefore, my sugar levels were down.  I was on medication to control my insulin levels but the doctor suggested that only medication is not going to improve the situation. I was asked to get active and also bring about changes in my diet. These were the only ways to bring down the insulin levels to the required levels I was told.

IMG_1406

Before:

  • Insulin resistant
  • Weight Gain-79 kgs
  • Has a personal trainer – Though no control on her diet
  • On a crash diet – Eating less
  • Skip dinner – Munch on unhealthy snacks

Soon after the doctor’s advice, I joined the gym and then my husband’s friend suggested that he has got a GOQii band and that I must try it too.  I said ok and got the GOQii band and got associated with my personal coach Disti Shah.

Believe me, when I say this that I have never been happier with myself. My main health goal when I started on GOQii was to reduce my weight and with that, the Insulin levels would also come down. I worked along with my coach towards achieving this goal.

Disti helped me make small changes such as what I eat when I eat, how much I eat etc. She disciplined me in my eating habits. I am very conscious now of what I eat, how much I eat. It has been a wonderful experience for me in the last one year or so ever since I got GOQii as my insulin levels have come down.

I am more disciplined now with regard to eating. I used to have a very sweet tooth and my coach put me on a sugar-free challenge. The first time I failed miserably. But, my coach did not give up. After a few days, she once again out me on a sugar-free challenge. And the second time around I was able to resist myself off sugar. Whenever I get a sweet craving I replace it with dates. I have also controlled my midnight cravings for sweets. .

After:

  • Eating at regular intervals – Not skipping any meals
  • Weight reduced to 73 kgs and automatically Insulin levels have come down
  • Took on the sugar-free week challenge – replaced sweets with dates
  • Urge of having sweets has reduced
  • Added pre – workout and post workout meals – thus her energy through the workout is consistent

Off late I have not been able to work out so much as I am on some medication and my gynecologist has asked me to do strenuous workouts. But, my health goal remains the same. I want to lose some more weight. Disti has been largely helping me with my healthy eating habits and has also given me some home workout options. I am trying to do whatever I am able to do.

The one thing I have realized with GOQii is that it is not about losing weight but, it is the way you look at things and how you do it. For me personally, it has been a positive lifestyle change.

I am a kind of person who does not like to take advice from anyone but Disti has been able to break that has changed my perspective and outlook towards life. I am a better off now than I ever was. I thoroughly enjoy the personal attention I get from my coach.  The best part of all these changes is that my husband is very happy with me for having taken all the efforts and watching it pay off for me.

Ruchi Singhvi looking her best

What does Coach Disti Shah have to say about Ruchi?

As a coach my dream to get a player who follows your guidance and suggestions. Ruchi is one of those few people who has really taken the GOQii journey seriously and made sure to reach her targets. The dedication and self-determination of Ruchi towards her target, got me also excited to work with her. The two of us never had a coach and player relationship, it was more a friendly chat and discussion that we used to have.

Her health goal was to decrease fat percentage and insulin resistance, which she achieved by sheer dedication towards diet and exercise. This is just a beginning of a long journey and she really defined the journey well by saying: “It’s the journey that matters and not the destination”.

 Achievements of Ruchi:

  1. Insulin level dropped from 48 to 21.
  2. Decreased body fat percentage.
  3. Regular exercises.
  4. More focus on fruits and salads.
  5. Increased protein intake, by making sure, each major meal has the protein source.
  6. One week of No Sugar challenge was completed and thus continuing to reduce sugar intake further.
  7. Short and frequent meals.
  8. Updating logs at regular intervals even when traveling abroad.

Why Do We Gain Weight During Winter?

gain weight during winterHave you noticed that you tend to gain weight during winter? While there are many factors at play here, is it true for everybody? If you’re one of those who gain weight during winter, it is best to know why it happens and take necessary measures to prevent it!

Let’s Analyse Why We Gain Weight During Winter

  1. Less Water Intake: As we aren’t thirsty and neither do we sweat as much as we do during summer, we tend to drink very little water which makes us lethargic and fatigued. The usual signs like dry and flaky skin is an indicator that one is not having enough water. We use moisturisers instead and not increase water intake which gives more room for frequent infection and dehydration leading to headache and dry cough
  2. Not Exercising Enough: With the pleasant winter chills, it is a little difficult to get off the couch or bed. This leads to fewer calories being burned and as a result, weight gain!
  3. Increased Production of Melatonin: Less sunlight and shorter days affect our hormones and some people tend to produce more of the hormone melatonin which controls our sleep-wake cycle. This increased production of melatonin induces sleep when it is not the time to sleep, making one lazy, lacking motivation and energy. It also increases appetite and leads to eating more.
  4. Increase in Metabolism: While this sounds great, it doesn’t really support your weight loss goals during winter. The sudden increase in metabolism will burn more calories to keep you warm but it will also make you hungrier.
  5. Staying Indoors: makes us lazy and bored. When bored, we begin binge-watching followed by binge-eating comfort or fried food which is high in sugar and salt. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that this contributes to weight gain as well.

How Do We Prevent Gaining Weight This Season?

There is an effective way to break the vicious cycle of more sleep, less healthy food and little to no exercise! Here’s how you can avoid gaining weight during winter.

  1. Choose Foods Wisely: Choose healthy, home-cooked meals such as soups. Opt for green tea. You can even add natural spices to your meals which are warm and benefit your health. Choose foods which can be paired with others or can be eaten any time of the day. Swap options like sauces available in markets to homemade hummus or dips.
  2. Pick a Hobby: Concentrate on other things like hobbies, sports, painting or reading books. You can even clean your house if you’ve been postponing it. Do something that engages you instead of finding comfort in food.
  3. Time Your Sleep: Maintain sleep timings which will set your circadian rhythm and help you stay active through the day or take power naps in the afternoon instead of sleeping for long hours
  4. Exercise: Plan indoor activities and exercises like yoga, skipping, stair activities which will help you be active more regularly. In fact, you can tune in to GOQii Play and browse some indoor workouts by fitness experts or yoga and meditation by yoga specialists. You can even opt for making group plans which have less chances of failure. If you can’t find a group, join our LIVE, interactive, GOQii PRO sessions conducted by experts within the GOQii App.

That’s all! Mind what you eat, sleep on time and exercise regularly to not gain weight during winter. We hope you found this article useful! Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

The Hidden Longevity Divide in India: How Urban Health Expectations Are Declining

The life expectancy in India has steadily increased over the years. We live longer lives compared to our past generations, and that is something to be proud of. However, a hidden reality lies beneath these figures.

The years that remain free from illness known as Healthy Life Expectancy haven’t increased at the same rate as our lifespan.

World Health Organisation (WHO) data from 2021 indicates that our healthy life expectancy at birth was approximately 58 years, a slight increase from 54 years in 2000, despite our overall life expectancy rising much faster.

The implication is clear: Urban Indians are living an increasingly larger portion of their lives afflicted by diseases. We aren’t just adding years to life; we are adding years of life with conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiac issues.

To understand the forces creating this hidden divide and how to close it, let’s look at the “Four Horsemen” of urban health.

  1. Pollution: The Invisible Ager

The air pollution problem in India is vast. According to the landmark Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study, an estimated 1.67 million deaths in India were associated with air pollution.

The effects of breathing toxic air in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata are not restricted to the lungs. It leads to systemic inflammation, accelerating ageing from within. It increases the risk of:

  • Heart attacks and strokes
  • Insulin resistance
  • Metabolic disturbances

Toxic air is an everyday stress factor that your body fights 24/7.

  1. The Urban Plate: Stuffed with Calories, Starved of Nutrients

The food environment in our cities has transformed. Traditional, home-cooked meals are being replaced by ultra-processed foods, sugary drinks, and industrial bakery products.

These foods interfere with your metabolism long before you see changes on the weighing scale. They cause spikes in insulin and inflammation—major drivers of Metabolic Syndrome.

In select cities, over 30% of the adult population faces metabolic syndrome (a combination of obesity, hypertension, and high cholesterol). This isn’t just a statistic; it is a warning that the disease burden looms large.

  1. The “Sitting” Epidemic

Physical inactivity is a public health crisis. Worldwide, almost 31% of adults do not fulfil the lowest standards of physical activity. In India, the urban corporate culture of long commutes and desk jobs exacerbates this.

Inactivity accelerates:

  • Glucose metabolism deterioration
  • Muscle wasting
  • Obesity

A 30-minute workout is great, but it cannot fully reverse the consequences of sitting in a chair for 10 hours. We need to move throughout the day, not just at the gym.

  1. The Reactive Trap: Late Diagnosis

The most devious aspect of this health shift is its timing. Issues like fatty liver or insulin resistance can lie latent for years before symptoms appear.

Most urban Indians visit a doctor only after symptoms develop. This “reactive approach” means we miss the golden window for early intervention and reversal.

Flipping the Script: How Digital Health Can Help

Here is where the picture stops being dark. Digital health isn’t just a tech trend; it is the tool we need to close the longevity gap.

  • Wearables & AI: Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) and fitness trackers make invisible patterns visible. You can see exactly how that samosa or that stressful meeting affects your body in real-time.
  • Upstream Care: We need to move from episodic care (hospital visits) to daily awareness. Postponing the progression of diabetes by even a few years can drastically improve your quality of life.

Conclusion: From “Living Longer” to “Living Well”

There is a strong urge to celebrate increased life expectancy, but a lifespan without vitality is not a success. A nation that lives longer but stays sick for longer incurs a heavy cost—both financial and physical.

Closing this gap demands broad changes: cleaner cities, better food choices, and intelligent workplaces. But it also requires you.

India’s hidden longevity divide is not inevitable. It is the consequence of choices we can change. The goal is to ensure your Healthspan (years of health) increases at the same rate as your Lifespan.

That is the point when “to live longer” will finally mean “to live well.”
